Kawhi Leonard, Clippers struggle again in Game 3 loss to the Mavericks

DALLAS —  In a game that became testy in the fourth quarter, the health of Kawhi Leonard was paramount for the Clippers. Leonard was listed as questionable with right knee inflammation for Game 3, and though he started Friday night, he rarely looked sharp during the Clippers’ 101-90 loss to the Dallas Mavericks at American Airlines Center. Leonard, who was in and out of the game, departed for the final time with 4:09 left and the Clippers down by 15 points. He played 25 minutes and produced nine points, nine rebounds and four turnovers in a game the Clippers once trailed by 21 points in the fourth quarter. Paul George, who was in foul trouble all game, had just seven points, going three for 11 from the field, one for six from three-point range. The game grew tense in the fourth quarter when Russell Westbrook, who missed all seven of his shots and all four of his three-pointers to finish with one point, got into it with Luka Doncic, the two of them pushing each other. Westbrook and P.J. Washington then shoved each other. Eventually, Westbrook

Top pick Jared Verse thrilled Rams also picked his Florida State linemate

As he settled in for an introductory news conference Friday, it was difficult to ascertain what new Rams edge rusher Jared Verse was more excited about: His selection the night before with the 19th pick in the NFL draft? Or that moments earlier on Friday, the Rams had traded up to select former Florida State teammate Braden Fiske. Verse had traveled to Southern California from Phoenix and, upon arrival at the Rams’ draft house in Hermosa Beach, he was ushered into a room for a phone call with Fiske after general manager Les Snead selected the defensive tackle with the 39th pick. “Having him be out here with me, and me being out here with him is just out of this world,” Verse said. The 6-foot 4-inch, 254-pound Verse was the first player chosen by the Rams in the first round since 2016. “It’s on me now,” he said. “I’ve got to show it was worth it.” Verse, who had nine sacks in each of his last two college seasons, said he admired accomplished NFL pass rushers such as Jadeveon Clowney, Myles Garrett and Maxx

Suspect arrested by police after hours-long standoff, shutting down L.A. Freeways

A suspect was arrested after an hours-long standoff on Friday night, shutting down the 710 and 91 Freeways. The male suspect led Long Beach officers on a pursuit before pulling over on the on-ramp to the southbound 710 Freeway near Alondra Boulevard in Compton around 4:15 p.m. However, he refused to come out and moved into the rear portion of the van, barricading himself inside. All lanes of the southbound 710 Freeway were shut down before reopening around 5:30 p.m. Traffic, however, was still backed up for miles as after-work commuters hit the streets. A spike strip was set up in front of the van. At around 6 p.m., patrol units started backing away and the spike strip was removed as the suspect suddenly drove off. The front driver’s side tire was deflated and he drove down the freeway before taking the next exit at Long Beach Boulevard. He pulled over on the off-ramp, got out of the van and began running away on the shoulder. He then turned back around and returned to the van to inspect the vehicle. Long Beach police later confirmed

Fire marks Oceanside Pier’s latest chapter in a troubled history

Firefighters have contained a fire that engulfed the end of the Oceanside Pier, a local landmark that has been destroyed by fire and storms and rebuilt several times in its 136-year history. On Friday, the wood pylons of the 1,954-foot wooden structure were still smoldering from the blaze that ignited Thursday, officials said. No injuries were reported. Oceanside and Strand beaches are still closed to the public as an environmental group cleans up the debris that has washed ashore. The fire also damaged a vacant restaurant that used to be Ruby’s Diner and a snack shop that housed the Brine Box, a seafood eatery. “90% of the pier was saved thanks to a really quick response,” Oceanside city Public Information Officer Terry Gorman Brown said. “A lot of times when piers catch, they’re made of wood — they’re toast.” The structure sits so high above the water that the sea spray couldn’t dampen the flames, she said. “We don’t know [the cause] yet because until [the fire] is fully out we can’t really get out there,” said Brown. The city engineer is assessing the damage

Increased bear sightings prompt alert at San Bernardino campground

An increase in bear sightings at San Bernardino County campgrounds has prompted an alert from park officials, warning visitors to be on the lookout. “We have about 140 campsites plus six large group campsites and they’re basically full every weekend starting now so it’s very popular,” said Ryann Gill, California State Park Superintendent of Silverwood Lake. As the weather warms up, more people will begin heading outdoors to enjoy activities at Silverwood Lake. Following the cold winter months, however, this is also when bears emerge from hibernation and sightings will be on the rise.  “Bear activity isn’t uncommon at Silverwood,” Gill said. “We do have bear activity here, however, for the last three weeks, I would say we’ve had increasing instances of at least one bear entering our campsites.” Recently, however, bear sightings were reported at the New Mesa and Old Mesa campgrounds, areas where Gill said bears are not typically seen. A La Verne resident named Jerry said he visits the area often and was a few campgrounds away when a hungry bear was scavenging for food last weekend. Young bear spotted roaming around

Police standoff with kidnapping suspect shuts down 91 Freeway

A kidnapping suspect remains barricaded inside a van after leading officers on a pursuit Friday night. The suspect initially led Long Beach officers on a chase before pulling over on the on-ramp to the southbound 710 Freeway near Alondra Boulevard in Compton around 4:15 p.m. However, the driver is refusing to come out and has moved into the rear portion of the van. All lanes of the southbound 710 Freeway were shut down before reopening around 5:30 p.m. Traffic, however, is still backed up for miles as after-work commuters hit the streets. A spike strip has been set up in front of the van and SWAT Team members, along with K-9 units, are responding to the scene. At around 6 p.m., some patrol units started backing up and the spike strip was removed before the suspect suddenly drove off. 4 more LA County probation officers placed on leave over juvenile hall violence

The Los Angeles County Probation Department put four more probation officers on administrative leave following an internal review of additional incidents of youth-on-youth violence at Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall, the department announced Friday, April 26. The agency previously removed eight other officers from the juvenile hall in January for standing by during — and potentially orchestrating — fights between youth. Critics have alleged those incidents were tantamount to “gladiator fight clubs.” Probation Chief Guillermo Viera Rosa, in a statement, said he is rooting out staff members “perpetrating a culture of violence, drugs, or abuse in County juvenile institutions.” Chief Probation Officer Guillermo Viera Rosa (Photo courtesy of the Los Angeles County Probation Department) “While these incidents involve a small number of our staff, they violate our core values and undermine our ability to do our duty to provide a safe and nurturing environment for the rehabilitation of the youth placed in our care,” Viera Rosa said. “My commitment to dig deeper into potential wrongdoing, to take immediate action, and to publicly disclose my actions should make it clear that we will not tolerate anything that

49ers close NFL Draft’s second round with trade, then selection of defensive back

SANTA CLARA — The 49ers finished out the NFL Draft’s second round Friday night by first swinging a trade — not involving one of their heralded wide receivers — before drafting defensive back Rendardo Green in the No. 64 overall slot. Their third-round pick is slated for the 94th-overall slot, with six slots ensuing before a break until Saturday’s final rounds. A run on offensive tackles presumably prompted the 49ers to ship the No. 63 spot to the Kansas City Chiefs, thus moving the Niners down one slot for Green. As part of that deal, the 49ers acquired a fifth-round pick (No. 173 overall) and sent a sixth-rounder (No. 211) to their two-time Super Bowl nemesis. Renardo Green, FSU  Green brings versatility and speed to the secondary, after five seasons at Florida State. A freshman cornerback in 2019, he spent the next two seasons at safety, then moved back to cornerback the past two seasons. He has one interceptions in 52 career games. The 49ers initially listed him as a cornerback. Earlier this afternoon, first-round pick Ricky Pearsall Jr. arrived at Levi’s Stadium with his

What former SF Giant Joey Bart said before his first game back at Oracle Park

SAN FRANCISCO – Standing near the first base line on a blustery Friday afternoon and across from the Giants dugout that Pirates catcher Joey Bart intermittently called home for four seasons, the former top pick recalled the whirlwind experience of being traded in April. Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi “called me, and I was obviously excited to get to Pittsburgh and meet these guys, but at the same time, it’s just different,” Bart said. “You’ve been somewhere for so long and things happen so fast that right now, it’s about getting caught up.” Bart, 27, said he had a “weird feeling” about Pittsburgh being a possibility, and welcomed going back to the part of the country his parents hailed from. He’s focused on getting acclimated to the Pirates, but also enjoyed being back in the Bay Area. He could be seen talking former teammate Logan Webb before the game. “I’ve talked to a few guys, but haven’t talked to too many people today,” Bart said. “It’s kind of weird, not in a bad way. I don’t want to invade on them, you know

Russian drones chase Abrams tanks from Ukraine front lines

By Tara Copp | Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — Ukraine has sidelined U.S.-provided Abrams M1A1 battle tanks for now in its fight against Russia, in part because Russian drone warfare has made it too difficult for them to operate without detection or coming under attack, two U.S. military officials told The Associated Press. The U.S. agreed to send 31 Abrams to Ukraine in January 2023 after an aggressive monthslong campaign by Kyiv arguing that the tanks, which cost about $10 million apiece, were vital to its ability to breach Russian lines. But the battlefield has changed substantially since then, notably by the ubiquitous use of Russian surveillance drones and hunter-killer drones. Those weapons have made it more difficult for Ukraine to protect the tanks when they are quickly detected and hunted by Russian drones or rounds. Five of the 31 tanks have already been lost to Russian attacks. The proliferation of drones on the Ukrainian battlefield means “there isn’t open ground that you can just drive across without fear of detection,” a senior defense official told reporters Thursday. The official spoke on the condition of

#MeToo advocates: Weinstein decision won’t stop the reckoning

By Jocelyn Noveck | Associated Press NEW YORK — #MeToo founder Tarana Burke has heard it before. Every time there’s a legal setback, the movement is declared dead in the water. A legal success, and presto, it’s alive again. So Burke, who nearly two decades ago coined the phrase “Me too” from her work with sexual assault survivors, found herself again declaring after New York’s highest court on Thursday overturned Harvey Weinstein’s 2020 rape conviction: The #MeToo reckoning is greater than any court case. It’s still there, and it’s working. The most obvious proof, Burke said: “Ten years ago we could not get a man like Harvey Weinstein into the courtroom.” The movement, she said, was responsible for that huge cultural shift — regardless of the Hollywood mogul’s ultimate legal fate. Also seeking to take the long view, following a legal setback that stunned many survivors and advocates, was Anita Hill, who famously testified against Clarence Thomas during his 1991 Supreme Court confirmation hearing, becoming the face of the fight against sexual harassment more than a quarter-century before the Weinstein case launched the #MeToo movement.

‘Tortured, bureaucratic nonsense’: Congressional District 16 recount will go into a third week

Mystery, sniping and challenged ballots — all swirl around the extraordinary recount in the Congressional District 16 race as it drags into its third week. Who will emerge the victor — if anyone — between Assemblymember Evan Low and Santa Clara County Supervisor Joe Simitian who are in a dead heat for second place? There may be no hanging chads in this ballot counting, but the much awaited outcome is still very much unknown. On April 15, Santa Clara and San Mateo counties began the ambitious task of recounting the more than 182,000 votes cast in the March primary race to replace retiring U.S. Rep. Anna Eshoo. Since then, nearly 175,000 ballots have been pulled out of storage boxes and rescanned by machines. As of Friday afternoon, Low had a one vote lead on Simitian. The political veterans ended the primary with 30,249 votes each behind former San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo. While there was no trigger for an automatic recount in this race to break the stunning tie, Jonathan Padilla, a 2020 and 2024 Biden delegate and former Liccardo staffer requested it and has been

How Tijuana leather designer Kiko Baez ended up working with Latin music’s biggest stars

Many of Kiko Baez’s happiest memories took place at his grandfather’s leather goods manufacturing facility in Tijuana. It’s where he learned to ride a bike and where he would run laps around the machinery and ask employees endless questions about what they do, learning about the ins and outs of the fashion industry. It’s also where he has made custom outfits for some of the biggest names in sports and Latin music. As the founder of luxury streetwear line Baez, the 24-year-old designer has made intricate leather jackets for the likes of Karol G, Daddy Yankee, Maluma and Santa Fe Klan. Baez has also made Mexico-inspired custom boxing shoes for boxing champion Saul “Canelo” Álvarez. Baez says that as a child he would shadow his grandfather at work. Quickly catching on to how the facility functioned, the younger Baez says he was always left with one question: “Why don’t the clothes say our name?” At the time, the factory was a leather manufacturer for several large American brands. This meant the Baez family had no input as to what they made. This arrangement often confused

Public Health issues ocean water quality warnings for several L.A. County beaches

The Los Angeles County Public Health Department has issued a water quality warning for several local beaches. The warning has been issued for the following areas: Santa Monica Canyon Creek at Will Rogers State Beach. The area to avoid is near Tower 18 which extends 100 yards up and down the coast from the creek. The Santa Monica Pier, 100 yards up and down the coast near the pier.
