CAPSLO receives grant to continue services, support local families

The Community Action Partnership of San Luis Obispo (CAPSLO) has been awarded a grant from the San Luis Obispo County Behavioral Health Department to continue providing vital services that support families and children on the Central Coast. Each year, the agency reportedly helps over 30,000 low-income individuals across 11 California counties to increase their economic stability and level of self-sufficiency. Officials say the new funding will enhance CAPSLO’s existing local programs, which include the Marthas Place (MP) Service Enhancement Program, School and Family Empowerment (SAFE), Positive Development Program, and In-Home Educator initiative. The MP Service Enhancement Program supports families with children up to five years old by providing an advocate who assists with navigating healthcare systems and accessing community services. Since its start in 2000, representatives say the SAFE program has been a cornerstone of CAPSLO’s services, offering comprehensive support to at-risk children and youth up to 21 years old by delivering prevention, intervention, and intensive treatment. Steve Mensch, 62, has been head of the film studio based in Atlanta since 2016. His death was initially reported by TMZ. Victim in Ventura County axe killing was suspect’s 15-year-old brother

The victim of a brutal axe killing in Ventura County earlier this week has been identified as the suspect’s younger brother, his family confirmed late Friday. Zayde Keohouho, 15, was killed by his older brother, 24-year-old Zuberi Sharp, in the 400 block of Jeanne Court in an unincorporated area near Newbury Park on Thursday, according to authorities and the victim’s family. “I will confirm that the deceased is our grandson, Zayde, who was 15 years old,” his grandfather, Gary Keohouho, said in a brief statement Friday night. “We appreciate the outpouring of love, aloha, support and prayers from friends and ohanas in this wonderful community.” Sharp was arrested Thursday night after he was found running naked through Newbury Park High School’s football field, prompting a lockdown because some students were still on the grounds, authorities said. Sheriff’s deputies who were chasing Sharp said he was armed with an axe, according to recordings of radio communications from the incident. The deputies also suggested the axe might be tied to the death on Jeanne Court, according to the audio clips. Jail records show Sharp was arrested around

Draymond Green accepts bench role to help Warriors elevate Kuminga

SAN FRANCISCO — When Steve Kerr called Draymond Green to float the idea of bringing him off the bench in an effort to try to optimize ascending wing Jonathan Kuminga, the head coach needed to ask permission. Of course he was OK with it, Green told Kerr. Like he is when he has to guard bruising centers and play through injuries, he’ll do anything he can to help the Warriors win. “I’ve been one of (Kuminga’s) biggest fans since he got here,” Green said. “So if he has an opportunity to start, you can’t be hypocritical. If they’re like, ‘We want him to start, but it’ll be for you,’ you can’t be like, ‘nah, not for me. That don’t work.’ I’m a fan of his. I want him to do well. So if his opportunity goes through me, it is what it is. And he earned the opportunity.” In a season of Steve Kerr searching for lineup combinations that work, the latest development is an experiment that removes Green, a future Hall of Famer who will get a statue outside Chase Center, from the starting

An archbishop’s knock formally restores Notre Dame to life as winds howl and heads of state look on

PARIS (AP) — Howling winds couldn’t stop Notre Dame Cathedral ’s heart from beating again. With three resounding knocks on its doors by Paris Archbishop Laurent Ulrich, wielding a specially designed crosier carved from fire-scorched beams, the monument roared back to life Saturday evening. For the first time since a devastating blaze nearly destroyed it in 2019, the towering Gothic masterpiece reopened for worship, its rebirth marked by song, prayer, and awe beneath its soaring arches. The ceremony, initially planned to begin on the forecourt, was moved entirely inside due to unusually fierce December winds sweeping across the Île de la Cité, flanked by the River Seine. Yet the occasion lost none of its splendor. Inside the luminous nave, choirs sang psalms, and the cathedral’s mighty organ, silent for nearly five years, thundered to life in a triumphant interplay of melodies. The restoration, a spectacular achievement in just five years for a structure that took nearly two centuries to build, is seen as a moment of triumph for French President Emmanuel Macron, who championed the ambitious timeline — and a welcome respite from his domestic

Possible H5N1 bird flu case in Marin County child; source of infection unknown

Health officials in Marin County are investigating a possible H5N1 bird flu case in a child. Officials have been investigating since last week and are working with the California Department of Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to determine how the child was exposed. The information was provided in a Friday “health status update” newsletter, and buried at the end of a paragraph about the county and state’s monitoring of the virus, raw milk and a note about a new USDA program designed to test milk nationwide. If confirmed, this would be the second case of an infected child in California. “It’s deeply concerning that another child may have H5N1. We need to know much more about this case, including some hypotheses for how she or he may have contracted the virus,” said Jennifer Nuzzo, director of the Pandemic Center at Brown University in Providence, R.I. “Given the proximity of this case to the last case of H5N1 diagnosed in a child without known exposure to animals, it may be prudent to conduct a broader investigation, including a serologic study, to
