Big finish helps Bay FC rally at home to beat San Diego Wave FC, snap losing streak

Bay FC produced another home thriller on Friday night, scoring twice in the second half to rally for a 2-1 win over San Diego Wave FC. Scarlett Camberos and Racheal Kundananji scored for the expansion squad (3-7-0), which snapped a five-game losing streak before an announced crowd of 16,930 at PayPal Park in San Jose. All five of Bay FC’s home games have been decided by one goal. The squad has won two of those games, and the deciding goal in both of those games was scored in the 87th minute. The Wave (3-4-2) took a 1-0 lead into halftime after Kyra Carusa pounced on a loose ball on a corner kick and scored in the 23rd minute. Bay FC, which was coming off a shutout loss to Orlando and had been out-scored 13-6 during the losing streak, broke through ten minutes into the second half. Kiki Pickett dribbled the ball into the box and found Camberos open to her left, who had time to wind up and slide her shot into the right corner. Camberos is the ninth different player to score for Bay

What was the biggest surprise of Dead & Company Night 2 at Sphere?

The second night of Dead & Company’s epic 24-show run at the Sphere in Las Vegas was filled with many splendid things — including a set list that featured such highlights as “I Know You Rider,” “Althea” and, best of all, “Morning Dew” as well as some blistering guitar work from John Mayer. Yet, the biggest surprise of Friday’s show was how little the visuals — shown on the mammoth hi-def video screens that fill the 366-foot-tall dome-shaped venue — changed from Thursday. The graphics during the first set were pretty much identical to what was witnessed during the kick-off concert, which meant that fans attending both nights got to relive the Western movie scene, the tropical garden setting and other memorable moments. They just did so while different tunes — such as “Crazy Fingers,” “Big River” and “Good Lovin’” — were being played. The second set did have a few really nice new video segments. Most notably, there was a run through some of the most historically important venues where the Grateful Dead performed — including the old Winterland and Fillmore West spots in

Mailbag (special edition): Analyzing survival scenarios for Washington State, Oregon State and the Pac-12

The Hotline mailbag publishes weekly. Send questions to pac12hotline@bayareanewsgroup.com and include ‘mailbag’ in the subject line. Or hit me on Twitter/X: @WilnerHotline. Please note: Some questions have been edited for clarity and brevity. Which is the more likely path for Washington State and Oregon State: Joining a rumored super conference, or rebuilding the Pac-12? — @CelestialMosh The question so many are asking but nobody can answer, including the Hotline. What we can do, however, is address the possible outcomes and offer predictions for each. For the Cougars and Beavers, it’s not quite as simple as joining a super conference or rebuilding the Pac-12. The full sweep of scenarios includes: — Joining the ACC or Big 12 in their current structures, with the latter more likely than the former but still not very likely. — Joining whatever reconfigured conference emerges if 1) the ACC collapses, 2) its top brands enter the Big Ten and SEC and 3) the remaining schools merge with the Big 12. The resulting league would feature at least 24 teams, may or may not be called the Big 12 and could have spots available for

Homeless Man Arrested After Search in `Fortified’ Compton Encampment

A homeless man was arrested for allegedly pistol whipping and firing at another homeless man during a dispute in Compton, authorities said Saturday. No one was injured during the dispute, a watch commander at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Compton station told City News Service. Deputies were dispatched at about 8 p.m. Friday to South Sportsman Drive and Atlantic Avenue, near an underpass for the Long Beach (710) Freeway. The suspect had fired at the victim and ran into a “fortified encampment” in that area, according to the watch commander. A search of the encampment located the suspect hiding in a tree and a K-9 unit was used to assist the man out of the tree and into custody, authorities said. No further information was immediately available.

Settlement in `Principle’ Reached in Suit vs. Nielsen Ratings Service

A former Nielsen Co. employee has settled “in principle” her lawsuit against the global marketing research and television ratings firm, in which she alleged she and other current and former workers are owed back compensation, much of it for missed meal and breaks as well as overtime. Armida Marquez brought the proposed class-action suit in Los Angeles Superior Court in March 2023, alleging multiple violations of the state Labor Code. Marquez asked for a court finding that the company violated the Labor Code provisions and that back wages be paid with interest. On Thursday, Marquez’s lawyers filed court papers with Judge Kenneth Freeman notifying him of the tentative accord which, subject to court approval, will “resolve the … action in its entirety” in about 120 days when the parties complete the appropriate paperwork. No terms were divulged. In their previous court papers, Nielsen attorneys maintained that all employees were “properly and fully compensated for all work performed” and that Marquez’s suit should be dismissed. According to Marquez’s suit, Nielsen “had the financial ability to pay such compensation, but willfully, knowingly and intentionally failed to do

Kurtenbach: Las Vegas likes the 2024 49ers more than I do. But let me explain my side

The 49ers might have lost the Super Bowl in Las Vegas, but they sure made a good impression while they were there. The NFL’s schedule was released on Wednesday, and while we’ve known the Niners’ opponents for months now, discovering the order – and times — for those 17 games was enlightening. The Niners will have a brutal second half of their schedule. Eight of the final 10 games of the season will be played against 2023 playoff teams. But the bookies in the desert (or are they just computers in a server farm, now?) like the 49ers to win more than 11 games this season — the team’s over-under win total for 2024 is set at 11.5. I would take the under. While I did pick the Niners to win 11 games in my way-too-early prediction Wednesday, I simply see more ways this could go wrong than right. Twelve wins would be a hell of an accomplishment against this schedule. Thirteen wins seem outside the realm of logic (but certainly not the heart). Let me explain: I’m betting the Niners have a Super Bowl

Dow Jones stock index crosses 40,000: Good or bad for California?

The stock market’s venerable yardstick, the Dow Jones Industrial Average, just made history – crossing 40,000 for the first time. Yes, this milestone set Thursday, May 16, is only a brief emotional victory for shareholders. Yet it can be seen as a historical milepost for the broader business climate, especially in California. To honor the moment, the trusty spreadsheet reviewed the Dow’s 5,000-point markers and how California fared in those periods using an economic metric (California unemployment), an interest rate (the average 30-year fixed mortgage), and home prices from the California Association of Realtors. As we begin our data-filled voyage, let’s note the Dow first crossed 5,000 in November 1995 — back when you could buy the median-priced California single-family home for $176,000. 5,000-point mileposts Dow passes 10,000 in December 1999: It took the stock index just over four years to double from 5,000 compared with a 28% gain for California homes to $225,000 in the same timeframe. This was an era when the economy broke loose from its early 1990s slumber. California unemployment dipped between 1995 and 1999 to 5% from 7.9% while mortgage

Armed robbers hit luxury jewelry store in Paris

May 18, 2024 / 11:46 AM EDT / AP French police were hunting for armed robbers Saturday who hit a jewelry store on one of Paris’ poshest streets, and media reports said the target was the exclusive Harry Winston boutique, self-described “Jeweler to the Stars.” Paris police said the armed robbers arrived and left on motorbikes, firing a shot outside without causing any casualties. Video broadcast by BFM-TV showed people dressed in black speeding away on two motorbikes. The luxury boutique was cordoned off as police investigators went in and out Saturday afternoon. The Paris prosecutor’s office overseeing the investigation gave the robbery location as Avenue Montaigne, where Harry Winston has its dazzling, by-appointment store, but wouldn’t confirm that the jeweler was the target. Harry Winston didn’t immediately reply to emailed questions from The Associated Press. Neither

Peril intensifies for Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs after video shows him attacking Cassie Ventura

A video showing embattled music legend Sean “Diddy” Combs violently attacking his then-girlfriend in a Los Angeles hotel in 2016 is likely to add more urgency to a federal sex-trafficking investigation into the star. The video shows Combs chasing, kicking, dragging and hurling a glass vase at Cassie, a singer whose real name is Casandra Ventura. It was obtained Friday by CNN and corroborates parts of a civil lawsuit Ventura filed against Combs last year, which was settled a day after it was filed in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. The video is not related to the federal probe, but it is drawing more attention to the ongoing investigation. Law enforcement sources told The Times that Combs is the subject of a sweeping inquiry into sex-trafficking allegations that resulted in a federal raid in March at his estates in Los Angeles and Miami. Combs has not been charged with any crime and has denied any wrongdoing. Allegations against Combs have piled up in recent years. Four women have accused him of rape, assault and other abuses, dating back three decades.

American who disappeared in Syria in 2017 presumed dead, daughter says

Updated on: May 18, 2024 / 12:14 PM EDT / CBS/AP Family of American held in Syria turn to Trump Family of Majd Kamalmaz, American detained in Syria, appeal to Trump for help 02:53 An American citizen who disappeared seven years ago while traveling in Syria is presumed dead, the man’s daughter said Saturday. Maryam Kamalmaz told the Associated Press that eight senior U.S. officials revealed earlier this month that they have specific and highly credible intelligence about the presumed death of her father, Majd, a psychotherapist from Texas. During the meeting, held in Washington, the officials told her that on a scale of one to 10, their confidence level about her father’s death was a “high nine.” She said she asked whether other detained Americans had ever been successfully recovered in the face of such credible information, and was told no. “What more do I need? That was a lot of high-level officials that we needed to confirm to us that he’s really gone. There was no way to beat around the bush,” Maryam Kamalmaz said.
