‘The Bay shows up’: Golden State Valkyries block party provides glimpse of budding fanbase

SAN FRANCISCO — On a sunny-then-chilly Saturday afternoon outside Chase Center, Thrive City featured no shortage of black, white and purple t-shirts and crewnecks. P-Lo and E-40 and Mayzin provided the slaps. Kehlani and Goapele and Khyenci provided the soul. The Golden State Valkyries’ weekend block party, an event that came shortly after the team revealed its name and logo, represented the first time that fans in the Bay Area had the opportunity to express their in-person support for the region’s newest sports team. Despite only four days notice, roughly three thousand flocked to the team’s future home and, indeed, made their excitement known. “The Bay shows up — we all know that — in really, really powerful ways,” said Valkyries president Jess Smith. The Bay Area had long clamored for a WNBA team before the arrival of the Valkyries, and with the franchise set for its inaugural season next year, Saturday’s block party provided a glimpse of the team’s budding fanbase. “It shows us that support for expansion is possible, and that so many cities and so many places that have been deserving of a lead

Athletics fall to 10 games below .500 with loss to Royals

The Athletics’ free-fall continued Saturday in a 5-3 road loss to the Kansas City Royals, with their record having dropped to 10 games under .500. Seth Brown gave the A’s some reason for hope in the second inning with a mammoth two-run home run against American League earned run average leader Seth Lugo, but Oakland (19-29) never led. The grim march backwards continues as the A’s sink in the American League West standings. It was their seventh straight loss, ninth in the last 10 games and 12 of the last 14 after sitting at .500 at 17-17 on May 4. Brown’s home run was his fourth of the season, with Kyle Isbel hitting his fourth for the Royals. Kansas City improved to 28-19. A’s manager Mark Kotsay was encouraged with his team getting 11 hits, even with the run output limited to Brown’s blast. “We just didn’t get the big hit, the two-out hit, which they were able to capitalize on in the fifth to add on to their lead,” Kotsay told reporters. “Ultimately, I think the offense, there are better signs. Those are the

GOP’s Kristi Noem assails Newsom, Biden at California convention

Controversial South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, a featured speaker at this weekend’s California Republican convention, came out swinging Saturday as the party gathered in Burlingame to strategize and rev up its members for the November election. She took swipes at Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom and President Joe Biden, and called on state Republicans to step up their support for local and national Republican candidates and ballot measures. “I think the biggest contrast between your governor and me is I don’t know if he ever asks himself (if his actions) are constitutional,” Noem said, referring to Newsom’s COVID-19 lockdowns. “I think your governor just says, ‘I’m going to do whatever the hell I want to do.’ It works for him.” Noem also criticized what she called Biden’s loose border policies, his COVID-19 restrictions, and said she was “fighting the fake news every single day.” However, in contrast to the often-incendiary Donald Trump, the presumed presidential candidate, Noem encouraged supporters to engage in “civil” dialogue with those they disagree with. “A diversity of opinions around the table and perspectives on background and experience in policy results in

LAPD seeking to fire senior captain who allegedly had romantic relationship with 9-1-1 dispatcher: report

The Los Angeles Police Department is moving to fire a senior captain who allegedly did not disclose a romantic relationship with a 9-1-1 dispatcher, according to a report by the Los Angeles Times. Alejandro Vargas, who is a senior captain with the Van Nuys division, was advised by Assistant Chief Daniel Randolph that he would be assigned to home after an internal investigation uncovered a romantic relationship between Vargas and the civilian employee. According to the L.A. Times, Vargas lied to three investigators when confronted about the relationship. Officers who have committed fireable offenses must go through a board of rights hearing where both sides are able to present their cases. This process is written in the city charter. The report states that Vargas initially came under investigation when his relationship with the 9-1-1 dispatcher became known to LAPD officials. South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, under fire for shooting dog, describes making ‘hard decisions’ at California GOP gathering

BURLINGAME  —  South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, once considered a potential 2024 running mate for former President Trump, received a warm reception at a gathering of California Republicans on Saturday just weeks after facing a harsh public backlash after she admitted killing her “untrainable” hunting dog. Noem, a champion of gun rights, warned of the perils facing the nation and her conservative leadership in the rural state, including her refusal to impose government shutdowns during the COVID-19 pandemic. “We have an election year coming up here in 2024 where I don’t think it’s about Republicans and Democrats anymore. I don’t think it’s about political parties,” Noem told more than 200 people at a luncheon at the California Republican Party convention in Burlingame, just south of San Francisco. “I think it is about people who love America and people who are trying to destroy it.” She did not directly mention the incident with her dog that she wrote about in her book, “No Going Back: The Truth on What’s Wrong With Politics and How We Move America Forward,” which came out this month. But Noem alluded

Demare Dezeurn beats loaded Masters Meet field for 100 win

Demare Dezeurn had many spectators at Moorpark High shaking their heads in amazement Saturday at the Masters Meet, where the Southern Section’s best athletes across all divisions compete for berths in next week’s state track and field finals at Buchanan High in Clovis. The Bishop Alemany freshman beat a loaded field in the boys’ 100-meter dash, getting out of the blocks first and maintaining his lead down the straightaway to win in a wind-aided 10.36 seconds. “I was very surprised because I’ve been battling injuries but I’ve worked a lot on my start, and when I saw I was in the lead I kept putting my foot to the pedal,” said Dezeurn, who beat Long Beach Poly freshman Benjamin Harris (10.43) and Los Alamitos junior Devin Bragg (10.47). “It’s my PR and I also got the school record, so it’s great motivation going into the state meet.” It was more vindication for Dezeurn, who won the 100 in a wind-legal 10.47 seconds at the Mt. SAC Relays in April and won the event in 10.54 at the Division 4 finals last week after placing third

Seize the Day earns wire-to-wire Preakness Stakes win on muddy track

BALTIMORE —  The 149th running of the Preakness Stakes was one for the ages. And the winning age was 88. In an outcome few saw coming, Wayne Lukas won his seventh Preakness on Saturday when Seize the Grey broke in front and never surrendered the lead over 1 3/16 miles. Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan did not disappoint with a solid runner-up finish, but it ended any chance of a Triple Crown. Lukas walks with a cane but still gets up on his pony every morning and supervises the training of his horses. All of the other trainers made a point to congratulate him after the race. Lukas, who is known as “The Coach” because he was a high school basketball coach, was touched by the display of affection. “One of the things that was very significant to me [Saturday] — and maybe it’s because I’m getting a little bit older — but as I came out of the grandstand and out across the racetrack, every one of the guys that were in that race stopped and hugged me and gave me a handshake. “That meant

Luis Matos enters exclusive company as SF Giants finally win 3 in a row

SAN FRANCISCO — When Luis Matos debuted as the second-youngest player in the majors last June, “Matos Mania” was born. The Venezuelan outfield phenom collected hits and scored runs at a rate that put him in the same conversation as Willie McCovey in franchise lore. Matos, now, is almost a year older. He boasts somewhere in the range of 20 pounds of extra muscle. It’s time for Matos 2.0. With another six RBIs in the Giants’ 14-4 win over the Rockies on Saturday, Matos surpassed even more exclusive company. This time around, the inner-circle Hall of Famer with whom the Giants’ young outfielder is keeping company is Orlando Cepeda, who held the franchise record for the most runs driven in over a two-game stretch at 22 years old or younger with nine between June 3 and 4, 1959. Matos had already matched Cepeda when he stepped to the plate in the eighth inning, then added two more RBIs to his ledger with his third hit of the afternoon. He has 11 RBIs in his past two games, matching Jack Clark (1982) and Bill Terry (1932)

2 men from L.A., 2 from Las Vegas arrested for allegedly selling fentanyl, cocaine, on dark web

The United States Department of Justice announced four men have been arrested for selling fentanyl pills and cocaine on the dark web. Authorities say Southern California natives, 21-year-old Alejandro Soto, and 21-year-old Austin Blanco, both from Burbank, and Las Vegas residents, 23-year-old Craig Rushton, and 20-year-old Christian McKibben have all been charged with one count of conspiracy to distribute fentanyl and cocaine, two counts of distribution of fentanyl, and one count of distribution of cocaine. The investigation began in April of 2021. The DOJ says the four men conspired with 23-year-old Van Nuys native Brian McDonald, and 23-year-old Ciara Clutario, of Burbank, to traffic fentanyl and cocaine. McDonald and Clutario allegedly created vendor profiles on darknet marketplaces to sell fentanyl, cocaine, and other illegal narcotics in exchange for cryptocurrency. The pair maintained online dark web profiles and arranged drug listings and shipment options, tracking drug orders received through the profiles, and offloading cryptocurrency received on the darknet marketplaces into cryptocurrency wallets that the co-conspirators controlled. Both McDonald and Clutario were charged last year, their trials will begin on Aug. 6. The DOJ says Soto, Blacano
