Driver dies in crash after leading authorities on pursuit in Ventura County

A fleeing driver crashed and died after leading authorities on a high-speed chase in Ventura County over the weekend. It began Sunday night around 10:20 p.m. in an unincorporated community south of Camarillo, according to a release from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff’s officials say the driver, identified as 46-year-old Jose Meza of Moorpark, fled a California Highway Patrol officer who had attempted to pull him over on suspicion of driving under the influence and other unspecified vehicle code violations. Meza allegedly took off at high speeds, leading the officer from the unincorporated area into Camarillo proper along Las Posas Road before getting onto the southbound 101 Freeway. By then, a CHP unit and a Sheriff’s Department cruiser were both in pursuit, authorities said. Meza continued to drive erratically, reaching speeds of more than 100 mph, before he unsuccessfully attempted to take the Lewis Road off-ramp where he crashed into a guard rail and was ejected from the vehicle. Meza was treated by deputies and officers on scene before being transported by ambulance to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. The crash

Armed robbery suspect apprehended following vehicle pursuit in Ojai

A man was arrested early Wednesday after he allegedly robbed a gas station and then led authorities on a pursuit in his car. Just before 3 a.m., Ventura County Sheriff’s Department deputies from the Ojai station responded to a Circle K gas station in the 11000 block of North Ventura Avenue in Ojai. Employees told investigators that a man entered the store, brandished a knife at a worker and then fled with alcohol and cigarettes stolen from the store. Dispatchers sent out a description of the suspect and his vehicle, which was located near the scene of the robbery. A deputy attempted to pull the vehicle over, but the driver fled, leading authorities on a brief pursuit. The driver, identified as 32-year-ol Fidencio Ramirez of Ojai, eventually surrendered and was taken into custody. Deputies recovered the stolen items inside Ramirez’s vehicle, and video surveillance also corroborated his role in the robbery, officials said. Ramirez has since been booked into jail to await charges for the robbery and the pursuit, as well as for violating terms of his parole. He’s been booked into the Pre-Trial Detention

Attorneys for man accused in Trump assassination attempt seek lengthy trial delay

By TERRY SPENCER FORT PIERCE, Fla. (AP) — Attorneys for a man accused of attempting to assassinate President-elect Donald Trump in September asked a federal judge on Wednesday to delay his trial until next December as they need more time to review the evidence against him and decide whether to mount an insanity defense. Ryan Wesley Routh’s public defenders told District Judge Aileen Cannon they cannot prepare their case by February when the trial is currently scheduled, saying that’s not enough time to review the massive amounts of phone and computer evidence the FBI has retrieved. Routh owned 17 cellphones and numerous other electronic devices, plus there are hundreds of hours of police body camera and surveillance videos that have been provided to the defense. Assistant federal public defender Kristy Militello told Cannon the only other clients she has had with more voluminous evidence presented against them are those accused of complicated frauds and two who were accused of taking part in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S Capitol. Only one other attorney and an investigator are working with her on the case

Take a festive drive to help keep Christmas in the Park free

Rain forecast for the rest of this week will likely dampen some of the holiday spirit at downtown San Jose’s Christmas in the Park display (though some people may enjoy getting out the rain jacket and umbrella and checking out the displays with fewer people around). But fear not, Christmas in the Park General Manager Debbie Degutis says: That just makes it a good opportunity to check out the Drive-Thru Light Show at History Park from the dry confines of your car. There’s another benefit, too: Buying a ticket for the drive-thru — whether for this weekend or another date this month — supports the nonprofit behind San Jose’s beloved holiday tradition and helps keep the long-running event at Plaza de Cesar Chavez free. “The way I think of it is that you make a donation to Christmas in the Park and you get to have this drive-thru experience,” Degutis said. Tickets are $25 per car and available at www.christmasinthepark.com. You may have heard that the nonprofit behind Christmas in the Park is having financial difficulties, facing a $100,000 shortfall in corporate sponsorship that could

Kimberly Guilfoyle: Latest Trump nominee accused of sexual misconduct

Kimberly Guilfoyle, the former San Francisco first lady-turned fierce Donald Trump loyalist, said Tuesday that she was honored to be the president-elect’s choice to become ambassador to Greece and looked forward to earning the support of the U.S. Senate. But it remains to be seen whether Guilfoyle can win this support. She’s got “baggage,” as political observers would say, and not just because she may or may not still be engaged to Trump’s oldest son, Donald Trump Jr. The former San Francisco prosecutor also has faced allegations that she engaged in sexual misconduct when she worked as a host at Fox News, reportedly subjecting a female assistant to “degrading, abusive, and sexually inappropriate behavior” and leaving the Rupert Murdoch-run network to pay out a multimillion-dollar settlement to avoid trial. Guilfoyle is the latest Trump nominee for a high-level, public-facing government position to face allegations of sexual impropriety. It’s not clear yet whether such allegations will prove disqualifying for these jobs, with Trump barreling into his second term and insisting his government should be filled with loyalists. His party also controls the Senate, which is responsible

San Jose: Willow Glen’s Cider Junction closing after 7 years in business

The two entrepreneurs who launched Silicon Valley’s first restaurant devoted to hard cider have announced that they are closing their Cider Junction. The taproom, located in San Jose’s Willow Glen neighborhood, will shutter at the end of service Saturday, Dec. 14 — or earlier, if the taps run dry, owners Claudia Derp and Tracy Smith said. “We hope the craft ciders we served brought as much joy to your lives as you’ve brought to ours,” they wrote on Cider Junction’s social media. “We think we have turned at least a few ‘never cider’ folks into cider fans!” Both Certified Cider Professionals, Smith and Derp had tasted ciders around the world but decided to showcase the efforts of others instead of making their own. Derp, a native of Germany, explained when they launched the enterprise in 2017: “We want to help expand the craft cider category so that it truly becomes its own category, and is no longer listed under beers.” Fermented apple juice was a fast-growing segment in the libations field when they opened. Their selection has run the gamut — “from craft ciders made

Fresno woman is fatally shot when her toddler gets hold of unattended gun, police say

The tensile strength necessary to pull the trigger of a 9-millimeter Kel-Tec firearm is roughly 5½ to 6½ pounds. That trivia became important this week to Fresno police as they investigated how a toddler could have shot his own mother. Authorities arrested an 18-year-old gun owner and were scrutinizing how a 2½-year-old child found the weapon and fired it once, striking and killing his mother Friday evening. Fresno police booked Andrew Sanchez, boyfriend of the victim, Jessinya Mina, on charges of felony child endangerment and felony criminal storage of a firearm. He was freed on bail, according to Lt. Paul Cervantes, Fresno Police Street Violence Bureau commander, while the police continue to investigate the circumstances of the shooting. “As you can imagine,” Cervantes said at a news conference this week, “it’s difficult because we’re having to wrestle with the idea that it’s even conceivable that a 2½-year-old child would have sufficient strength to manipulate a firearm.” Attempts to reach Sanchez were not successful. Mina was the mother of the young boy who authorities believe fired the shot and an 8-month-old girl. Both are now staying

Chinese citizen allegedly photographed Vandenberg base with drone, says it was ‘probably not a good idea’

Nearly a mile above Vandenberg Space Force Base in Santa Barbara County, a hacked drone soared through restricted airspace for roughly an hour. The lightweight drone photographed sensitive areas of the military facility on Nov. 30, including a complex used by SpaceX, according to federal investigators. The drone then descended back to the ground, where the pilot and another man waited at a nearby park. Four security officers from the military base arrived on the scene and asked the men if they had seen a drone flying through the area, unaware that one of them had tucked the drone under his jacket. Authorities identified that man as 39-year-old Yinpiao Zhou, a Chinese citizen and a lawful permanent resident of the U.S. He was charged with failing to register the drone and flying it over restricted airspace to take photographs of the military base, the U.S. attorney’s office announced Wednesday. On Nov. 30, personnel at the military base detected the drone and determined that it had taken off from nearby Ocean Park to the north. The drone traveled south near Surf Beach and then directly toward

One of last survivors of Pearl Harbor attack dies at 100

When Bob Fernandez joined the Navy in August 1941, his innocence was forgivable. Only 17, he had grown up in San Jose and quit school after eighth grade. Quick with his hands and feet, he followed his older brother on the local boxing circuit and was ready for new opportunities. Four months later, on Dec. 7, Fernandez came of age. Reflecting on his enlistment, he once said, “I just thought I was gonna go dancing all the time, have a good time, see the world. What’d I do? I got caught in the war.” One of the country’s last survivors of the infamous attack on Pearl Harbor, Fernandez died Wednesday in Lodi, Calif. He was 100. His death brings the number of Pearl Harbor survivors to a little more than a dozen. Fernandez had planned to attend the 83th Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day on Saturday, the same day he was profiled in The Times. He would have joined two other Pearl Harbor survivors — ages 102 and 104 — at the annual commemoration in Hawaii. Until recently, Fernandez had been in good health. He was

How to catch the Geminids, one of the strongest meteor showers of the year

By CHRISTINA LARSON The Geminids — among the few major meteor showers to come from asteroids — peak on Friday. It’s one of the year’s last chances to see fireballs in the sky. The shower often produces meteors with a distinctly more yellow glow, likely due to the unusual origin material, said Sally Brummel, planetarium manager at the University of Minnesota’s Bell Museum. Under ideal viewing conditions, the Geminids typically put on one of the best and brightest shows of the year because of the high volume of meteors visible each hour. However, an almost full moon this year means up to 15 meteors per hour are expected at peak time, according to the American Meteor Society. The moonlight “will wash out a lot of them,” Brummel said. Viewing lasts until Dec. 21. Here’s what to know about the Geminids and other meteor showers. What is a meteor shower? Multiple meteor showers occur annually and you don’t need special equipment to see them. Most meteor showers originate from the debris of comets, but a few — including the Geminids — result from the debris of

Sharks update: Mukhamadullin to play; should ‘heart and soul’ forward be re-signed?

San Jose Sharks winger Luke Kunin is on pace to set a new single-season career high in goals scored. He is in his second season as an alternate captain and plays the type of north-south game coach Ryan Warsofsky appreciates. Those qualities will also likely make Kunin, a pending unrestricted free agent, an attractive trade target among playoff-contending teams early next year. Kunin scored twice and had 16:31 in ice time for the Sharks on Tuesday in their 3-2 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes. Going into Thursday’s date with his hometown St. Louis Blues, Kunin, after 31 games, is now tied for fourth on the team with eight goals, more than halfway past his career high of 15 set during the 2019-2020 season when he played in 63 games with the Minnesota Wild. Now, it’s a matter of whether the Sharks want to try to sign Kunin to a contract extension past this season or trade him for future assets as they did with goalie Mackenzie Blackwood on Monday. Blackwood was traded to the Colorado Avalanche as part of a deal that netted goalie and

What’s next for SF Giants after signing Adames? Posey admits there are more roster holes to fill

DALLAS — Willy Adames makes the San Francisco Giants a better baseball team. He fills a position of need. He provides power and defense. In Buster Posey’s estimation, Adames and Matt Chapman, who signed his own lucrative deal, represent baseball’s best left side of the infield. But Adames alone does not elevate the Giants to contention status. Adames alone doesn’t guarantee they’ll be a playoff team. So when Posey was asked if it was fair to say that the team still has multiple holes to fill, the Giants’ president of baseball operations didn’t entirely disagree. “I think baseball is unique in the sense that that’s probably true for any team,” Posey said. Posey has repeated his goal to build a team with strong defense and pitching. Adames, one of baseball’s better defensive shortstops, addresses the former. With Adames in place, Posey and general manager Zack Minasian can turn their attention to addressing the latter. San Francisco’s rotation, as currently constructed, features Logan Webb, Robbie Ray, Jordan Hicks, Kyle Harrison and Hayden Birdsong. (Posey said on Monday that Hicks will be a starter.) Franklin Fire Scorches More Than 4,000 Acres in Malibu; Evacuations Increase

San Bernardino delays performance review of city attorney, manager and clerk

There’s a delay on the San Bernardino City Council taking a closer look at the roles of the city attorney, city manager and city clerk. On Dec. 4, the council voted 6-1 in closed session to ask Tustin-based consultants Jacob Green & Associates to evaluate City Attorney Sonia Carvalho, Acting City Manager Rochelle Clayton and City Clerk Genoveva Rocha. The evaluation was to take place at a special meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 11. But that’s been put on hold for now. “There were some scheduling challenges,” city spokesperson Jeff Kraus wrote in an email Wednesday afternoon. “A new day and time have not yet been set. It will be set by the mayor and council.” Sign up for The Localist, our daily email newsletter with handpicked stories relevant to where you live. Subscribe here. It’s not entirely clear what issues Mayor Helen Tran or other councilmembers may have with Carvalho or other appointed officials. Much of the discussion about the issue has apparently taken place in closed session, where personnel and legal matters are discussed out of the public eye. At the Nov. 20 meeting

Trump invites China’s Xi Jinping to inauguration

By Jennifer Jacobs December 11, 2024 / 6:00 PM EST / CBS News CBS News Live CBS News 24/7 Live President-elect Donald Trump has invited Chinese President Xi Jinping to attend his inauguration next month, multiple sources told CBS News, and inauguration officials are making plans for additional foreign dignitaries to attend the swearing-in ceremony.  Trump invited Xi in early November, shortly after the election , sources said, but it was not clear whether he has accepted the invitation. A spokesperson for the Chinese embassy in Washington did not immediately comment. In addition to Xi, the president-elect’s team has raised the possibility of hosting other leaders at the Capitol on Jan. 20. Hungary’s far-right leader, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who has a warm relationship with Trump and visited him at Mar-a-Lago this week, is “still considering” whether to attend, according to a source familiar with Orbán’s plans.  “World leaders are lining up to meet with President Trump because they know he will soon return to power and restore peace through American strength around the globe,” Trump transition spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said.  Ambassadors and other diplomats
