“Diverse set of threat actors” could take advantage of Oct. 7 anniversary: Sources

A “diverse set of actors” in the U.S. could use Monday’s one-year anniversary of the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel as an opportunity to “engage in violence or threaten public safety,” Department of Homeland Security and FBI officials warned on Wednesday, adding that the actors could specifically target Jewish, Muslim or Arab communities. Law enforcement is particularly concerned about hoax threats targeting symbolic institutions or public gatherings, according to sources, although there is currently no credible threat that anything is going to happen. Those places are “pretty attractive targets” if an extremist wanted to carry out an attack, officials said. Matt Leedy was a reporter for the Fresno Bee, but this is his first time publishing a book. He shares the stories of the elation of the young kids who get picked for the teams, the incredible costs to the families who must pay for hotels, training, equipment and travel, and then, for many, as they get older, leaving the sport discouraged. He also shares the stories of the parents and coaches, their hopes and dreams, how they often intertwine with the young players, and the impact that can have. The book is now on sale in stores and as an ebook.* *As a participant in affiliate marketing programs, ABC

Board blocks parole for LAPD detective serving life for murder of ex-boyfriend’s wife

A state parole panel has blocked the release of former LAPD Det. Stephanie Lazarus, reversing an earlier decision that could have freed her from a life sentence for the 1986 murder of her ex-boyfriend’s wife. The three-member panel found good cause Wednesday to rescind last November’s parole recommendation to release Lazarus, 64, who spent 25 years with the Los Angeles police before being apprehended by her own colleagues in 2009. It is the latest twist in a notorious murder case that rocked the Los Angeles Police Department. Lazarus could still be granted parole, and another hearing is scheduled in the coming months. Gov. Gavin Newsom previously asked the California Board of Parole Hearings to review its plans to set free Lazarus, and in May the panel moved to further examine evidence in her case. Announcing the board’s decision to rescind, Commissioner Julie Garland said a suitability hearing for Lazarus will be set within 120 days. “We know that means another round of hearings for all of you, and I’m sure that is difficult for all of you, but it is what is required by the

Bank of America outage blocks online accounts or shows zero balances

Bank of America’s mobile applications were apparently knocked offline Wednesday. Many BofA account holders took to social media platforms to say they either couldn’t access their online accounts or saw zero balances when they did log in. The Charlotte, North Carolina-based bank said in a statement that some clients “are experiencing an issue accessing their accounts and balance information today.” “These issues are being addressed and have largely been resolved,” the statement continued. “We apologize for any inconvenience.” One X user drolly posted that their money was gone, “but conveniently my debt is still there.” A screenshot of their mobile app showed zero balances for all BofA accounts except one Visa card. DownDetector, an online tracker of technical outages, reported between 5,000 to 20,000 BofA users reported an outage starting at 9 a.m. and peaking by 11 a.m. The detector said online, mobile and ATM users were affected. Jasmene Bowdry, a user on Meta’s social platform Threads, said all of her BofA accounts showed $0. “That’s all the warning I need,” she wrote. “Putting all my ish (sic) under the mattress and a Crisco can.”

Chula Vista man accused in wife’s slaying extradited from Mexico

A man accused of stabbing his wife to death in front of their three young children at their Chula Vista home four years ago, then fleeing to Mexico, pleaded not guilty Wednesday to charges that include murder. Francisco Uriarte, 41, was extradited to San Diego this week in connection with the March 29, 2020, killing of his 35-year-old wife, Natalia Uriarte, according to police. The couple’s children, 9-year-old twins and a 3-year-old, were present at the time, police said. Officers who responded to the couple’s Oxford Street apartment around 1:30 a.m. found Natalia Uriarte dead and her husband gone. Uriarte had been at large since his wife’s death until his arrest in Mexicali in May, according to Mexican federal authorities. Police have not disclosed the circumstances behind his capture. He was handed over to U.S. authorities at the Mexico City International Airport for his trip back to San Diego, Mexican officials said. In arguing to deny him bail, Deputy District Attorney Erin Casey said that in addition to being a danger to the community for the “brutal and violent” slaying, Uriarte also sent a voicemail

FACT FOCUS: Claims that more than 300,000 migrant children are missing lack context

By MELISSA GOLDIN Republicans, including former President Donald Trump, have recently claimed that hundreds of thousands of migrant children who crossed the U.S.-Mexico border unaccompanied are missing, then criticized the border policies of the Biden administration and Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris. Ohio Sen. JD Vance, the Republican vice presidential nominee, repeated the claim during Tuesday night’s debate. “We have 320,000 children that the Department of Homeland Security has effectively lost,” he said as he met Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz in what is likely the last debate of the 2024 presidential campaign. But immigration experts say the claims regarding missing migrant children lack significant context. Here’s a closer look at the facts. CLAIM: The Biden administration has lost more than 300,000 unaccompanied migrant children. THE FACTS: This claim misrepresents information in an August report published by the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of the Inspector General, which faulted Immigration and Customs Enforcement for failing to consistently “monitor the location and status of unaccompanied migrant children” once they are released from federal government custody. The report noted that more than 291,000 unaccompanied migrant children

Are we living in the golden age of Tejano documentary filmmaking?

A spate of documentaries focusing on the lives of Tejanos have found platforms over the last six months, showcasing how diverse, nuanced and entertaining our lives can be. You can find the contemplative radicals of “Hummingbirds ” trolling the streets of Laredo over on PBS; the determined detectives of “The Chicano Squad ” solving crimes in Houston on A&E; and a dozen or so student musicians competing in “Going Varsity in Mariachi” on Netflix. On Max, the third episode of the Texas docuseries triptych “God Save Texas” takes an intimate and personal look at border life in El Paso, while Tubi has become the new home for “As I Walk Through the Valley,” an in-depth look at the history of rock ‘n’ roll in the Rio Grande Valley. And that’s just what you can stream right now. “ The In Between ,” a doc about grief and reconnection set in the small border town of Eagle Pass, is currently making its way through the festival circuit and is set to air on PBS next spring. Even Texas Monthly is executive producing a documentary about iconic

Wendy Williams says ‘it’s about time’ Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs faces the music: ‘So horrible’

Former daytime-talk staple Wendy Williams is no longer on air, but that hasn’t stopped her from weighing in on one of the music industry’s most damning scandals in recent years. The host of “The Wendy Williams Show” — who has shied away from the spotlight since before her aphasia diagnosis — weighed in on Sean “Diddy” Combs and the scathing allegations that have upended his public image in the past year. In an interview published weeks after Combs’ arrest, Williams said she wasn’t surprised by the disgraced mogul’s legal woes. “I have been told by so many people, ‘Wendy you called it,’ ” Williams, 60, told the Daily Mail in an conversation published Tuesday. Days after Combs’ Sept. 16 arrest in New York, numerous fans on social media wondered how Williams would have reacted to the news on her now-canceled talk series. While one fan joked that she would ask audiences to “clap if you think Diddy did it,” others recalled that Williams had long been critical of Combs. Even before his arrest, Williams’ tensions with the Bad Boy Records founder had resurfaced, spawning articles

Rachel Zegler says her ‘Snow White’ movie gives the princess’ name a new origin story

When Disney in 2021 announced Rachel Zegler as the lead in its “Snow White” revival, some consumers pledged to boycott the film for its “woke” casting. To them, a Colombian actor wasn’t qualified to play a princess with a canonical history of having “skin as white as snow.” So the production turned to some other history. “It fell back to another version of ‘Snow White,’” Zegler told Variety in an interview published Wednesday, “where she survived a snowstorm that occurred when she was a baby.” “So the king and queen decided to name her Snow White to remind her of her resilience,” she said. And resilient the 23-year-old actor has been amid the backlash she’s received since stepping into the role. Hours after Disney’s casting announcement, Zegler seemingly addressed those who opposed the idea of a Latina Snow White, writing in a since-deleted X post, “yes i am snow white no i am not bleaching my skin for the role.” Debate about Zegler’s casting has bubbled up several times since, including after a slew of 2022 red-carpet interviews wherein the “West Side Story” actor said

Column: Given Trump’s age and fitness, President Vance is a real possibility. You’ve been warned

Do vice-presidential debates matter? Conventional wisdom says no. Historically, polls have shown that those quadrennial 90 minutes have little effect on how people will vote in the presidential election. Tuesday night’s debate between the Democratic nominee, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, and his Republican opponent, Sen. JD Vance of Ohio, seems to be following that pattern. Some pundits have claimed that Vance, who delivered a polished and unflappable performance, “won” the debate; Walz appeared more nervous and fumbled several questions, although he did, according to fact-checkers, lie far less often. Walz also scored big at the end, when he pushed Vance to confirm that President Biden did win the 2020 election and called Vance‘s deflection “a damning nonanswer.” According to instant post-debate polling, most voters considered the debate a tie, and both men saw bumps in their favorability ratings, although these are unlikely to change that fact that Walz’s numbers are unusually high while Vance’s are remarkably low. None of which, as previously stated, will likely matter come November. Except for one thing. One very important and rarely mentioned thing: If Donald Trump wins, Vance could

Derwin James Jr. hated watching Chargers … but loved what he was seeing?

Derwin James Jr. didn’t necessarily like the view, but he liked what he saw. The safety who was suspended for the Chargers’ game against the Kansas City Chiefs watched on his television as his defensive teammates forced two takeaways against the two-time defending Super Bowl champions. The way teammates were zooming across the field and communicating, despite not having one of their defensive captains, brought a proud smile to James’ face, even if the final 17-10 score did not. “To know I’m a part of that, what a special defense we have, it’s just amazing,” James said Wednesday. “I couldn’t wait to get back out here to work with these guys.” The star safety returned to the team this week after a one-game suspension for multiple player safety violations. With James back, the team released safety Tony Jefferson and signed him to the practice squad Tuesday while releasing offensive lineman Braeden Daniels. (Matt Freed / Associated Press) James called the suspension “very disappointing” and reiterated his only objective on the field is to play fast and make plays. He said he did not get extensive
