6 arrested in $90,000 flash-mob style robbery at Southern California mall

Six people, four adults and two juveniles, were arrested in connection with a flash-mob style robbery late last week at the Westfield Topanga Mall in Canoga Park that was captured on video, authorities announced Sunday.   Officials with the Los Angeles Police Department say that on Oct. 4 a total of 12 suspects hit two retailers inside the mall located in the 21700 block of Victory Boulevard at around 5:15 p.m.  “The suspects, who were wearing masks and hooded sweatshirts, overwhelmed the security and knocked over numerous display shelves,” an LAPD news release stated.   The thieves were able to make off with more than $90,000 worth of merchandise, police added. LAPD’s Organized Retail Crime Task Force responded to the mall and assumed the investigation. Working alongside LAPD Topanga area officers, investigators were quickly able to identify potential suspects involved in the crime and some of the getaway vehicles used.   Several masked robbers made off with designer bags and clothes at the Topanga Mall on Friday, Oct. 4, 2024. There was perhaps no better place to be this Sunday than the beach. Plaschke: Dodgers fans lose their cool and Dodgers lose their edge in series-tying debacle

Two baseballs flew down toward the San Diego Padres’ Jurickson Profar from the left-field corner stands, the gutless moves of two cowards. Numerous water bottles flew down toward the Padres’ Fernando Tatis Jr. from the right-field corner stands, the gutless moves of many cowards. More than a game was lost Sunday night when the Padres equaled the National League Division Series at one game apiece with a 10-2 victory over the Dodgers. An already tattered image was further damaged. An historically bad reputation was further stained. Anyone out there walking around town wearing a Dodger jersey today should be embarrassed. On a national stage, a few bad actors among the largest Dodger Stadium crowd of the season only furthered the harmful narrative that Chavez Ravine is a place stocked with punks. In a startling display for a game of this magnitude, a pack of sorry spectators caused the game to be stopped for nearly 10 minutes before the bottom of the seventh inning while balls and bottles rained down on the field. “I’ve seen over a thousand games here, well over a thousand games in

Jurickson Profar sets tone for Padres in NLDS Game 2 win over Dodgers

The home run music started blaring through the Dodger Stadium speakers. Mookie Betts began rounding the bases and pointing toward the bullpen. Just like the previous night, it appeared the Dodgers had erased an early deficit on the back of one of their superstar players. Only then, however, did the 54,119 people at Chavez Ravine realize that Jurickson Profar had made a spectacular, tone-setting play instead. If Shohei Ohtani’s score-tying homer in Game 1 of the National League Division Series on Saturday night energized the Dodgers in a comeback victory, then Profar’s first-inning robbery of Betts in Game 2 did the exact opposite — frustrating the Dodgers, and what later became an unruly crowd, in an emotionally charged 10-2 San Diego Padres win that evened the NLDS at one game a piece. “We knew going into this series there would be a lot of emotions,” manager Dave Roberts said. “They just played a better baseball game than we did tonight.” Indeed, in what became a heated bout that included several jawing matches between the teams and a 10-minute delay in the seventh inning after fans

As Rams slip up against Packers in another close game, is season slipping away?

It’s going to be a long week for the Rams. And the way things continue to play out, it could be a very long season. The Rams’ 24-19 defeat to the Green Packers on Sunday before 72,842 at SoFi Stadium — many of them Packers fans — dropped their record to 1-4 heading into their off week. Coach Sean McVay and the still-injury-depleted Rams welcome the bye. It will be goodbye to already dim playoff hopes, however, if they don’t pull it together during the next two weeks before they return to play the Las Vegas Raiders on Oct. 20. “The reality is you can tend to think you’re a lot further away than you are,” said McVay, who is 1-4 for the first time since he was hired in 2017. “There’s going to be a lot of outside noise, and we have to stay inside-out more than anything.” The Rams will be on the outside looking in if they do not fix the problems that plagued them Sunday. They could not overcome inexcusable penalties, a lost fumble and an interception en route to their

Family of Northridge hit-and-run victim speaks out

Family members of a fatal hit-and-run victim are speaking out after newly surfaced surveillance video shows not one, but two drivers ran over the biker in Northridge. The man, identified as Danny Oerlemans, was on his way to buy cat food when he was struck and killed on the night of Sept. 19, according to his family. Neither driver stopped to help. “Devastating, I can’t believe people wouldn’t,” said his sister, Jeannette Oerlemans. “It’s a human body and to just run over them and not check to see if he’s okay, to keep going.” Oerlemans told KTLA’s Jennifer McGraw that their family is heartbroken, especially for his two children who are 23 and 16 years old. “It’s rough for them,” said Oerlemans. “It’s something that you don’t expect.,” Oerlemans’ family is now speaking out and putting out posters, hoping to generate any information on what happened to her brother. The surveillance footage shows one driver had a grey-colored car, and the other a pickup truck. Oerlemans said she’s worried her brother will just become another statistic, and that the drivers won’t be held accountable. “My

Dodger Stadium fans toss balls and trash on field, interrupt Padres’ 10-2 win that evens NLDS

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Fans threw baseballs in the direction of San Diego left fielder Jurickson Profar and then tossed trash that caused a lengthy delay before the Padres beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 10-2 on Sunday night to even their NL Division Series at a game apiece. Yu Darvish limited the Dodgers’ powerful offense to one run and three hits over seven innings and Fernando Tatis Jr. went deep twice as the Padres tied the postseason record of six homers. David Peralta and Jackson Merrill each hit two-run homers, and a hobbled Xander Bogaerts and Kyle Higashioka had solo shots. The delay in the middle of the seventh inning led to a 12-minute gap between pitches and occurred as two balls were thrown from the stands in the direction of Profar. He chased after one of them but a security officer got to it first. Trash was strewn on the warning track in right near the Padres bullpen. Dodger game delayed as fans throw baseballs, trash at Padres outfielder

Game two of the Dodgers National League Division Series in Los Angeles against the San Diego Padres was briefly delayed after fans tossed baseballs at a Padres outfielder.   Dodger fans, who may have been annoyed with left fielder Jurickson Profar after he snatched a first-inning Mookie Betts hit out of the air by reaching into the stands and was then seen hopping up and down, staring at fans for several seconds while Betts rounded the bases before showing that he’d caught the ball, caused the ruckus in the seventh. As San Diego held the lead at 4-1 in the seventh, fans prompted the 12-minute delay after throwing baseballs and trash at Profar.   LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA – OCTOBER 06: Jurickson Profar #10 of the San Diego Padres walks across the field escorted by an umpire in the seventh inning against the Los Angeles Dodgers during Game Two of the Division Series at Dodger Stadium on October 06, 2024 in Los Angeles, California. Sprinklers Aid in Knockdown of Structure Fire in Downtown LA

Sprinklers aided firefighters in putting out a blaze Sunday at a commercial building in downtown Los Angeles. The fire was reported around 5 p.m. Sunday at 1440 South Maple Ave., just north of the Santa Monica (10) Freeway, said Nicholas Prange of the Los Angeles Fire Department. Crews battled flames at a one-story commercial building with outside fire extending into the structure, Prange said. The sprinkler system held the fire in check while firefighters extinguished the flames in about 30 minutes, he said. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire was not immediately known.

Lakers LeBron James, Bronny James play together in NBA preseason game for first time

PALM DESERT —  LeBron James barreled through the lane and slammed home a left-handed hammer. He sprung through the air to reject a shot. On the first night of Year 22 — albeit during the preseason — not a lot had changed and James was doing the kinds of things he’s done on the court for a generation. But Sunday night at the start of the second quarter, he unveiled his latest — and maybe greatest — trick. LeBron James and his oldest son, Bronny, shared the court together for the first time as professionals for a four-minute, nine-second shift. It was the first time a father and son played together in NBA history. “Not real,” LeBron James said of the feeling. “Still trying to get a little bit used to it, but pretty cool. It’s pretty cool for the both of us and especially for our family. It’s pretty cool. “ In a five-minute postgame interview, James would say “pretty cool” six times. Although the duo’s debut won’t be official NBA history until they play together during the regular season, Sunday was the first look

Local organization needs your help to fill 100 backpacks for homeless veterans

The Cambria American Legion Auxiliary is working to fill 100 backpacks for local veterans in both San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties but in order to do that, donations from the community are needed. The organization will be donating backpacks to homeless veterans at the Stand Down in Santa Maria later this month for the first time, but over the last few years, theyve been doing the same thing elsewhere. Weve been donating it to the Vets Center in San Luis Obispo for about three years and also the SLO County Services. We also give them backpacks to give to people that they interview for when they come in and are homeless and in need of supplies, said Mary Woeste, Cambria American Legion Auxiliary Vice President. Each backpack contains “…rain ponchos, gloves, beanies, that type of thing to help because it is going to get colder, said Shelley Woeste, Cambria American Legion Auxiliary President. Toothpaste, toothbrush, a brush and a comb. You need snacks, Mary added. She said the backpacks alone cost $20 and by the time they’re filled, the total cost is about

Q&A with Peter Bono, candidate for California’s 50th Congressional District

Peter Bono, a Republican and retired Navy technician, is running for Congress representing California’s 50th Congressional District. The 50th encompasses San Diego’s downtown, Balboa Park and coastal neighborhoods and stretches north into Escondido and San Marcos. To help inform voters, the San Diego Union-Tribune asked the candidates a series of the same questions about their priorities, positions and campaigns. Their emailed answers have been lightly edited for clarity. Bono’s have also been edited for length, since the responses he submitted exceeded the word limits all candidates were given. Why are you running, and what makes you the best candidate? First of all, I am a proud U.S. citizen by birth here in our great country. I served my country HONORABLY for 30 plus years in the naval service. During those years I was instructed to give respect, to trust my fellow shipmates and to support our country, in whatever way that I was instructed to perform. Character should be considered in choosing a candidate. What makes me the best candidate, I have several character traits: Be loyal to our flag and country. Be respectful to
