Live 49ers updates: Cardinals beat Niners at sweltering Levi’s Stadium

The 49ers will look to earn their first win over an NFC West division rival this year Sunday as they face Kyler Murray and the Arizona Cardinals. Active for the Niners are two All-Pros who were questionable entering Sunday’s game after missing two practices last week: tight end George Kittle (ribs) and linebacker Fred Warner (ankle). Warner missed the second half of last week’s 30-13 win over the Patriots after suffering his injury, and Kittle also picked up his injury in that game. Kittle has already missed one game this season, the 49ers’ loss to the Rams last month, with a hamstring injury. Stormy weather, approaching hurricane, threaten launch delays

Boeing Starliner crew speaks from space Boeing Starliner crew speaks out on space stay into 2025 05:29 After days of uncertainty, the Federal Aviation Administration announced Sunday that SpaceX had been cleared to press ahead with the planned Monday launch of the European Space Agency’s $398 million Hera asteroid probe, stormy weather permitting. With forecasters calling for an 85% chance of thick clouds and showers that would trigger a delay, Hera’s launch atop a Falcon 9 rocket from pad 40 at the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station is targeted for 10:52 a.m. EDT Monday. The forecast is 75% “no-go” if launch is delayed to Tuesday. “The last hurdle is the weather. So, please, please, I need you to do something about it!” Hera project manager Ian Carnelli joked with reporters Sunday. “It’s the only thing I really cannot control. … It looks like we have some opening around the time of launch, but it’s really impossible to say at the moment.” An artist’s impression of the European Space Agency’s Hera probe (left) and two small sub-satellites that will orbit the asteroid Didymos and its small

Violent mob assaults 7-Eleven clerk, ransacks store in Southern California

Video obtained by KTLA shows a violent mob attack at a 7-Eleven store in Orange County Sunday that left a store clerk with a bloody nose, authorities confirmed to KTLA. The violence unfolded at around 1:30 a.m. at a 7-Eleven store located at 550 South Knott Avenue in Anaheim, police said. In the footage, a mob of mostly masked males are seen pulling the door of the convenience store open as a clerk, armed with something that appears to be like a broomstick, attempts to keep the group out.   While the clerk was trying to keep the door closed, video shows him get hit in the stomach and doubled over before taking an uppercut from a male in a gray hoodie.   When the clerk, seemingly stunned from the blows, steps back, the mob moves forward but quickly retreats when the clerk raises his makeshift weapon and charges them.   The male in the gray hoodie immediately returns to the door, forces his way inside, appearing to threaten the clerk with more violence when the mob swarms the store behind him and begins ransacking it.

Defending Champions Win at Long Beach Marathon

Ryley Fick and Jason Yang successfully defended their women’s and men’s titles at Sunday’s 40th annual Long Beach Marathon with all races starting a half-hour earlier than originally planned because of a forecast of temperatures in the 90s. Fick, the 2023 Big West Conference’s Women’s Track Athlete of the Year and holder of four individual school records at Cal State Long Beach, won in a personal best time of two hours, 54 minutes, 42 seconds, faster than she expected. “I was honestly doubtful about my fitness compared to last year,” said Fick, who won in 2:58:30 last year in her first marathon, five months after graduating from Cal State Long Beach. “But I knew I needed to come out here and give it a try.” The 24-year-old Fick said she started conservatively, then looked at her watch around Mile 10 and realized, “I’m going faster than I expected. So I thought, “OK, I’ll keep it right there.” By Mile 13 or 14, Fick said she began experiencing stomach pain and aching feet. “After last year, I knew the marathon was going to be painful,” the

Rams’ rally falls short again as Packers bring home a win at SoFi

It’s going to be a long week for the Rams. And the way things continue to play out, it could be a very long season. The Rams’ 24-19 defeat to the Green Packers on Sunday before 72,842 at SoFi Stadium — many of them Packers fans — dropped their record to 1-4 heading into their off week. Coach Sean McVay and the still-injury-depleted Rams welcome the bye. It will be goodbye to already dim playoff hopes, however, if they don’t pull it together during the next two weeks before they return to play the Las Vegas Raiders on Oct. 20. On Sunday, the Rams could not overcome inexcusable penalties, a lost fumble and an interception to lose their second game in a row. Packers quarterback Jordan Love capitalized on all of the mistakes, turning them into a field goal and two touchdown passes to tight end Tucker Kraft as the visitors improved to 3-2. Last season, the Rams suffered a loss to the Packers that dropped their record to 3-6 heading into the off week. Quarterback Matthew Stafford returned from a thumb injury and led

Q&A with Bill Wells, candidate for 51st Congressional District

Bill Wells, the Republican mayor of El Cajon, is running for Congress representing the 51st Congressional District, which stretches from Lemon Grove north to Mira Mesa and from Clairemont east to El Cajon. To help inform voters, the San Diego Union-Tribune asked all the candidates a series of the same questions about their priorities, positions and campaigns. Their emailed answers have been lightly edited for clarity. Why are you running, and what makes you the best candidate? I am running for Congress in the 51st Congressional District because I, like 75% of the country, believe that our nation is going in the wrong direction. This grand experiment with the border, the economy, energy, defunding the police and allowing people to die on the sides of the road in their addictions is a pathetic failure. I believe I can provide more rational, sane and effective solutions to where we are currently as a nation and a district. I’ve had great success in El Cajon fighting the homeless industrial complex, keeping a fully staffed police department and having a balanced budget with a nearly $70 million reserve.

Q&A with Sara Jacobs, candidate for 51st Congressional District

Rep. Sara Jacobs, a San Diego Democrat, is seeking a third term in Congress representing California’s 51st Congressional District, which stretches from Lemon Grove north to Mira Mesa and from Clairemont east to El Cajon. To help inform voters, the San Diego Union-Tribune asked all the candidates a series of the same questions about their priorities, positions and campaigns. Their emailed answers have been lightly edited for clarity. Why are you running, and what makes you the best candidate? At 35 years old, I’m proud to be the youngest member of House leadership — and to represent a new generation of leaders who can bring people together to get things done. Our politics are more divided than ever, but in my first two terms in Congress, I’ve proven that I’ll work with anyone to deliver for my community. I’ve worked across the aisle to pass bipartisan laws to help more people put food on the table, improve the quality of privatized military housing, expand housing access for military families and bring home more than $498 million in federal funds. My record is proof that bipartisanship

Q&A with Scott Peters, candidate for California’s 50th Congressional District

Rep. Scott Peters, a Democrat and incumbent, is running for re-election to Congress representing California’s 50th Congressional District. The 50th encompasses San Diego’s downtown, Balboa Park and coastal neighborhoods and stretches north into Escondido and San Marcos. To help inform voters, the San Diego Union-Tribune asked the candidates a series of the same questions about their priorities, positions and campaigns. Their emailed answers have been lightly edited for clarity. Why are you running, and what makes you the best candidate? I have a proven record of working with everyone to get things done in San Diego and in Congress. I’ve authored and helped pass federal laws to limit what seniors pay at the counter for prescription drugs and to help families pay off rising student loan debt. I’ve passed bills to tackle climate change, to accelerate the nation’s transition to renewable energy and to expand housing opportunities for homeless. I will always fight to protect and expand civil rights, to defend a woman’s right to make her own healthcare decisions and to make healthcare for everyone more affordable and accessible. I’ve dedicated my career to

Man arrested for open firing at central Fresno 7-eleven clerk, police say

Monday, October 7, 2024 2:09AM A man who police say previously tried to steal from a central Fresno 7-Eleven store returned Sunday and opened fire at the station’s clerk. FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — A man has been arrested for firing a gun at a 7-Eleven gas station clerk in Central Fresno. Police were called to the 7-Eleven on Blackstone Avenue near Harvey Avenue around 9:30 a.m. Sunday. Historic spike in anti-Jewish threats across the US since Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel, ADL says

Threats to Jews in the United States tripled in the one-year period since the deadly October 7 terrorist attack on Israel by Hamas, preliminary data provided to CNN by the Anti-Defamation League shows. More than 10,000 antisemitic incidents occurred between October 7, 2023, and September 2024 – up from 3,325 incidents the prior year. That marks the most incidents recorded in a 12-month period by the organization since it began tracking threats in 1979. Since last October’s terrorist attack, “Jewish Americans haven’t had a single moment of respite,” ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt said in a statement. “Instead, we’ve faced a shocking number of antisemitic threats and experienced calls for more violence against Israelis and Jews everywhere.” The new preliminary figures released ahead of an upcoming full report by the organization come as police agencies across the country have ramped up patrols around Jewish and Muslim institutions as a precaution in response to the escalating conflict in the Middle East, Monday’s October 7 anniversary and the Jewish High Holidays. Since the war between Israel and Hamas began, reports of hate crimes and bias incidents targeting Jews

Israel intensifies bombardment of Gaza and southern Lebanon ahead of Oct. 7 anniversary

DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip — A new round of airstrikes hit Beirut suburbs late Sunday as Israel intensified its bombardment of northern Gaza and southern Lebanon in a widening war with Iran-allied militant groups across the region. Palestinian officials said a strike on a mosque in Gaza killed at least 19 people. A year after Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack, Israel has opened a new front in Lebanon against Hezbollah, which has traded fire with Israel along the border since the war in Gaza began. Israel also has vowed to strike Iran after a ballistic missile attack on Israel last week. The widening conflict risks further drawing in the United States, which has provided crucial military and diplomatic support to Israel. Iran-allied militant groups in Syria, Iraq and Yemen have joined in with long-distance strikes on Israel. Israel is on high alert ahead of memorial events for the Oct. 7 attack, while rallies continue around the world marking the anniversary. Rocket sirens and blasts were heard in Haifa in northern Israel late Sunday, and Hezbollah claimed the attack. Israel’s military said at least five projectiles were

Witnesses at the airport reported seeing flames and smoke coming from the underside of the plane. Frontier officials said there were no reported injuries and all of the passengers plus seven crew members exited the plane using the stairs and were transported to the terminal. The National Transportation Safety Board announced Sunday that it was launching an investigation into the incident along with the FAA.

Hurricane Milton is growing stronger as it blows toward Florida’s Tampa Bay region

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Hurricane Milton quickly intensified Sunday and is on track to become a major hurricane with the Tampa Bay area in its sights, putting Florida on edge and triggering evacuation orders along a coast still reeling from Helene’s devastation. While forecast models vary, the most likely path suggests Milton could make landfall Wednesday in the Tampa Bay area and remain a hurricane as it moves across central Florida into the Atlantic Ocean, forecasters said. That would largely spare other southeastern states ravaged by Hurricane Helene, which caused catastrophic damage from Florida into the Appalachian Mountains and a death toll that rose Sunday to at least 230 people. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said Sunday that it’s clear that Florida is going to be hit hard by Milton — “I don’t think there’s any scenario where we don’t have major impacts at this point.” Hurricane Milton was centered about 815 miles (1,310 kilometers) west-southwest of Tampa on Sunday afternoon, with maximum sustained winds of 80 mph (130 kmh), the National Hurricane Center said. “You have time to prepare — all day today, all

The Niners will be battling the Cardinals and the elements at Levi’s Stadium on Sunday afternoon: Santa Clara is expected to hit 99 degrees for the hottest game ever played at the stadium. The 49ers requested early this week to switch from their red home jerseys to all-white throwback uniforms to reflect the sunlight, but the NFL denied the move. They will wear white pants, though. Madonna’s brother, artist Christopher Ciccone, dies at 63

Christopher Ciccone, an artist and interior decorator who worked closely with his older sister, Madonna, during her rise to global superstardom in the ’80s and ’90s, died Friday. He was 63. The cause of death was cancer. According to a statement from his family, Ciccone died peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones, including his husband, British actor Ray Thacker. On Instagram Sunday, Madonna paid tribute to her brother with a post that celebrated their close bond and acknowledged the sometimes turbulent nature of their relationship. “He was the closest human to me for so long,” wrote the pop star. “It’s hard to describe our bond. But it grew out of an understanding that we were different and society was going to give us a hard time for not following the status quo. We took each other’s hands and we danced through the madness of our childhood.” Ciccone was the fifth child and third son born to Silvio and Madonna Ciccone and was raised in Rochester, Mich., where both his personal and creative identities bloomed to reveal an expansively artistic soul,” according to his family.
