Stocks’ sell-off worsens as Wall Street wonders how much pain Trump will accept for the economy

NEW YORK — The U.S. stock market’s sell-off cut deeper on Monday as Wall Street questioned how much pain President Donald Trump will let the economy endure through tariffs and other policies in order to get what he wants. The S&P 500 dropped 2.7% to drag it close to 9% below its all-time high, which was set just last month. At one point, the S&P 500 was down 3.6% and on track for its worst day since 2022. That’s when the highest inflation in generations was shredding budgets and raising worries about a possible recession that ultimately never came. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 890 points, or 2.1%, after paring an earlier loss of more than 1,100, while the Nasdaq composite skidded by 4%. Here’s what to know about Social Security’s new overpayment rule

Social Security’s overpayments plan Social Security’s plan to get overpayments back 00:36 Getting overpaid by Social Security will soon come at a high cost, with the agency saying Friday it’s reinstating a plan to take 100% of a beneficiary’s monthly check to claw back the money, up from the current 10% rate.  The policy change highlights an issue that had caused financial hardship for some beneficiaries in years past, prompting the Social Security Administration under the Biden administration to limit clawbacks to 10% of a person’s monthly benefit check.  But the Trump administration’s reversal could lead to deep financial strain for some senior citizens who find themselves caught up in the overpayment issue. While overpayments are rare, they are often the result of Social Security’s own miscalculations — and can come as a surprise to beneficiaries, given that it can be difficult to know if you have been overpaid.  “People generally do not know they are overpaid — you were receiving benefits, assuming that the government was giving you the proper amount,” Nancy Altman, president of Social Security Works, an advocacy group for the benefit

Help decide if the best main street in the U.S. is right here on the Central Coast

Paso Robles and Solvang are among 20 cities in the running for that designation with USA Today’s 10 Best Readers’ Choice awards for 2025. The charming mains streets were nominated by an expert panel, according to USA Today, which states they offer more than just a road; these streets are living history, have a vibrant culture, and serve as the hearts of their communities. ‘Dark Winds’ review: In Season 3, a dark night of the soul for Lt. Leaphorn

It can be thrilling to watch an actor who understands that showy performances aren’t all they’re cracked up to be. That smaller, more nuanced choices can hold the screen with just as much magnetism. Sometimes even more. That’s always been one of Zahn McClarnon’s underrated strengths, and after a long career of standout supporting roles on “Westworld,” “Fargo” and “Longmire,” he has rightfully assumed his place as a leading man playing Lt. Joe Leaphorn on AMC’s “Dark Winds,” back for a third season. The 1970s-set police procedural, based on the crime novels by Tony Hillerman, is also a moody and atmospheric psychological thriller that takes advantage of its dusty Southwest setting. The Navajo Tribal Police are called out to one such barren location, where a boy’s bloody bicycle has been found. What happened? As Leaphorn tries to find out, his efforts are complicated by the arrival of an FBI agent (Jenna Elfman) who can barely hide her condescension when she tells him, “I’m just here to button up a few open cases on the reservation.” But Leaphorn has other distractions as well. His marriage is

European vacations decline — Americans travel to these US cities instead

By Zuzana Paar, Food Drink Life American travelers planning a European vacation dropped from 45% in 2024 to 37% in 2025, a staggering decline since 2021. The European Travel Commission, or ETC, reports cost as the main factor of this sinking interest. People now seek destinations offering similar experiences without compromising their budget. The ETC’s findings are based on a survey of 7,087 long-haul travelers from various countries. This sudden downturn now implies a question: Where do they intend to go instead? A decline in European travel The ETC report, published in partnership with Eurail BV, found only 18% of American travelers say they will visit Europe, a significant drop from 28% last year. While a majority of those polled plan to travel long-haul this year, just 44% of global travelers emphasized having a European vacation, compared to 49% in 2024. “The decline in U.S. travel sentiment towards Europe reflects broader economic pressures, political uncertainty and evolving consumer preferences,” says Eduardo Santander, chief executive officer of the European Travel Commission, in the report. People adapt their travel plans as Europe drives Americans – and global
