Opinion: This Passover, have room in your hearts for Israelis and Palestinians

Monday night, as Passover begins, Jews around the world celebrate their ancestors’ liberation from slavery in ancient Egypt. That liberty was hardly cost-free. Participants in the Seder will recount the 10 plagues by symbolically dipping a finger in their glass of wine and removing a drop, one for each debacle. This recalls the destruction that paved the way to freedom. The Hebrew Bible recounts that after the Israelites made it across the Red Sea, God kept the waters parted to lure the Egyptian army chasing them. Once the army was surrounded by the sea, God let go, as it were, and the walls of water collapsed. Safely on dry ground, the Israelites broke out in song and dance as they bore witness to the drowning of Egyptian soldiers and chariots. Angels in heaven followed suit to rejoice together with the Israelites. But, as stated in Tractate Sanhedrin, a treatise in the Talmud that details the laws and lore of Judaism, God immediately rebuked them. The “Holy One, Blessed be He, said to them: My handiwork are drowning in the sea, and you are reciting a

PEN America cancels awards ceremony amid backlash to stance on Israel-Hamas war

Following criticism of the organization’s response to the Israel-Hamas war, PEN America has canceled its annual awards ceremony recognizing outstanding literature. Of the 61 authors and translators nominated for the prestigious awards, 28 withdrew their books from consideration ahead of the event, which was set to be held April 29 at the Town Hall in New York City. Nine of the 10 nominees for the top recognition, the PEN/Jean Stein Book Award and its $75,000 prize, withdrew from consideration. “We greatly respect that writers have followed their consciences, whether they chose to remain as nominees in their respective categories or not,” Rosaz Shariyf, PEN America’s literary programming chief officer, said in a statement Monday. “We regret that this unprecedented situation has taken away the spotlight from the extraordinary work selected by esteemed, insightful and hard-working judges across all categories. As an organization dedicated to freedom of expression and writers, our commitment to recognizing and honoring outstanding authors and the literary community is steadfast.” The nonprofit known for its protection of free expression in literature and its focus on human rights has come under fire for

Universal Studios tram tossed 15 riders to the ground, accident investigators say

A tram vehicle at Universal Studios Hollywood threw 15 of its riders to the ground after it struck a guardrail near props from the “Jurassic Park” film franchise in an accident that is under investigation by the California Highway Patrol. Details of the accident that took place Saturday night — amid the 60th anniversary of the attraction — remain sketchy but the CHP said the agency has determined that drugs and alcohol were not a factor in the crash. The tram was driving through the storied Universal Studios back lot shortly after 9 p.m. when the crash occurred, according to authorities. The linked tram cars passed by a set of props from the “Jurassic Park” film franchise when the tram driver turned onto Avenue M and for some unknown reason the last car in the procession collided with the metal guardrail on the right side, the CHP said. This caused the tram to “tilt and eject multiple passengers from the tram,” authorities said in a news release. The Los Angeles County Fire Department received a call for service shortly after 9 p.m. for the crash

Column: The UAW sends a lightning bolt into anti-union states with a huge victory at a VW plant

Until Friday, the phrase “union victory at Chattanooga” could mean only one thing: the defeat of a Confederate army by forces under U.S. Grant at the Battle of Chattanooga in late November 1863. No longer. On Friday, the United Auto Workers scored a decisive victory at a Volkswagen plant in Chattanooga, Tenn., as workers voted overwhelmingly to organize with the UAW. The vote looks like a milestone. It was the UAW’s first victory at an auto plant in the Deep South, following two defeats — in 2014 and 2019 — at the same plant. It comes on the heels of the UAW’s success in negotiating impressive new contracts with the Big Three domestic automakers in October. The real importance of this election is not just the organizing of this factory. It’s that it announces the South is open to unions. — Labor historian Erik Loomis The vote opens the door to further votes and organizing drives across the region, where political leaders have kept unions weak in part through anti-union right-to-work laws — all 14 Deep South states, as well as 12 others, have those

Orange County man held at gunpoint after dealership loses loaner agreement, reports car stolen

A man is suing an Orange County car dealership after they provided him a loaner car, then reported that car stolen, leading to his apprehension at gunpoint in Laguna Niguel. Jamie Rodgers was driving on the 73 Freeway in June 2021 when he was pulled over and held at gunpoint by about a dozen law enforcement officers armed with rifles and pistols, as reported by the Orange County Register. “I’m thinking I’m going to get shot. I’m a Black man being pulled over in Orange County. … I’ve heard too many stories of this happening,” Rodgers told the Register. “I’m thinking, I’m going to be next.” Officers were looking for a reported stolen vehicle and believed that Rodgers was armed and dangerous, but it turned out that Car Pros Kia Huntington Beach, which was working on Rodgers’ vehicle, misplaced the loaner contract. “Apparently, it had fallen behind a file cabinet,” the Register reported. “The dealer received a bill for unpaid tolls, couldn’t find the contract and assumed it must have been stolen, Rodgers said.” In the 10 minutes or so it took police to find

California has a new state park

California’s newest state park, Dos Rios, was dedicated on Monday in a special ceremony attended by Governor Newsom and First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom. Since 2012, River Partners, the Tuolumne River Trust and many other organizations have led the restoration of Dos Rios Ranch Preserve near the confluence of the San Joaquin and Tuolumne Rivers. With its official opening on June 12, Dos Rios will become the 281st park in the California State Park system and the first state park in Stanislaus County. During the restoration process of converting this once agricultural site into a wildlife habitat, 280,000 trees were planted across 2,100 acres, 7,000 acre-feet of fresh water were conserved, and 8 miles of riverfront were restored. California home prices climb higher, but sales stall “And the benefits don’t just stop at recreation – this park is a key asset to fighting the climate crisis, home to the state’s largest floodplain restoration project,” Governor Newsom said. “We’re not just protecting these spaces, we’re restoring them for future generations.” Along with serving local wildlife, Dos Rios will become a valuable link to the Pacific Flyway

New road repair treatments scheduled for several San Diego neighborhoods

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Several neighborhoods in San Diego are undergoing some road repairs this month with more work scheduled through May, city officials announced Monday. The city’s Transportation Department says work is currently being done in Kensington, Talmadge, Grantville, San Carlos, North Park, Bay Park and other communities. East Village gets new parking meters Crews are using two new resurfacing methods called cape seal and scrub seal as part of the road repair projects. The city says these treatments are more cost-effective and will help improve roadways by filling cracks and protecting against moisture which, in turn, would help prevent the likelihood of potholes forming. According to the city, cape seal involves applying asphalt emulsion and following it by laying down crushed rock that is left to cure for three days. A slurry seal is then applied after three days. On the other hand, scrub seal treatment involves sweeping a layer of crushed rock into small cracks following the application of asphalt emulsion. Crews will then follow this treatment by applying fog seal over the surface of the road. Work starts on bullet

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Recent research has found that some metropolitan cities are doing more to protect the environment than others by offering “greener” places to live in, including San Diego. In fact, it is the country’s leading producer of solar and geothermal energy resources, with solar energy accounting for most of its renewable electricity generation. Delta Burke looks back on ‘Designing Women’ exit, and using crystal meth to lose weight

“Designing Women” alum Delta Burke says her “ugly” experience on the hit CBS sitcom drove her away from Los Angeles, and her long-time struggle with her weight led her to use crystal meth to keep off the pounds. Known for playing the sassy former beauty queen Suzanne Sugarbaker on the 1980s comedy, Burke opened up for the first time in years on “Glamorous Trash,” a celebrity memoir podcast hosted by TV writer and comedian Chelsea Devantez, who revisited Burke’s 1998 book, “Delta Style: Eve Wasn’t a Size 6 and Neither Am I.” The 67-year-old actor told Devantez how she turned to crystal meth to slim down when she first arrived in Hollywood. She explained that while she was in drama school in London, a doctor gave her pills to help her lose weight, but when she came to the United States, she didn’t realize that the “Black Beauties” that she had been prescribed were illegal stateside. “They were like medicine to me: take them in the morning so you won’t eat. It wasn’t a recreational thing. After you build up a tolerance to anything and
