Kate Beckinsale’s ‘Tummy Troubles Survivor’ shirt hints at ailment that hospitalized her

Kate Beckinsale appears to be out of the hospital and back home after a months-long medical issue. The English actor was all smiles and back to her irreverent self in an Instagram series posted Tuesday. While the “Underworld” star didn’t directly state what had been ailing her, the T-shirt she wore in the images contained the biggest clue thus far: “Tummy Troubles Survivor,” it said, bearing an illustration of an armored bunny behind a medieval shield. The 50-year-old captioned her post with a muscle-flexing emoji and a white heart, but didn’t add further details. A few photos showed her doting on her Pomeranian, who was wearing tiny hand gloves on its front paws, and another image showed her cuddling with her fluffy cat Willow, all from the comfort of her luxe bedroom. A spokesperson for Beckinsale did not immediately respond Wednesday to The Times’ request for comment. “The Aviator” and “Pearl Harbor” star revealed she was sick in a since-deleted March 11 Instagram post honoring her mother on U.K. Mother’s Day. She did not disclose the nature of the illness or why she had been

9 suspects charged in historic $20 million airport gold heist

By April Alexander April 17, 2024 / 1:04 PM EDT / CBS News One year after a brazen gold heist at the Toronto airport, nine suspects have been charged in an investigation police said “belongs in a Netflix series.” In total, 6,600 gold bars weighing over 800 pounds, worth an estimated $20 million, and about $2.5 million in foreign currencies were stolen from Toronto Pearson International Airport in April 2023. At the time, police described the case as “very rare.” Now they call it the largest gold heist in Canadian history. In a news conference Wednesday, police said 19 charges had been laid in the joint investigation — dubbed Project 24K — involving Peel Police and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. Five suspects, including an Air Canada employee, were arrested then released with conditions and will appear in court at a later date. A warrant was issued for another man who was also an employee of the airline at the time of the theft. In addition to the warrant for the former employee, two more Canada-wide warrants were issued for those not yet

By Matt Richardson Edited By Angelica Leicht April 17, 2024 / 12:57 PM EDT / CBS News The rising price of gold could be beneficial for investors who take a proactive approach now. Getty Images In recent years, with inflation surging and the  interest rates meant to tame it hitting their highest point in decades, Americans have explored alternative investments. Amid this environment, it’s critical to invest in assets that can both protect and grow your money. One such investment is gold. Known for its ability to hedge inflation and diversify your portfolio , investing in the precious metal has rocketed up in recent years, hitting an 11-year high last September. But while gold has multiple benefits for investors, it hasn’t typically been known as a reliable income-producer . Investors looking for that are (typically) better off considering alternatives. But the recent gold prices have some reconsidering this approach. The price of gold has hit multiple record highs in recent weeks with no signs of

House Republicans unveil foreign aid bills as Johnson pushes forward

By Caitlin Yilek, Kaia Hubbard Updated on: April 17, 2024 / 1:07 PM EDT / CBS News Speaker Johnson says he won’t resign Speaker Johnson says he’s not resigning amid challenge over foreign aid 02:01 Washington — House Republican leadership on Wednesday unveiled the legislative text for three bills that are part of a complicated plan by Speaker Mike Johnson to get aid to U.S. allies while addressing concerns from conservatives. The three bills would provide $26.4 billion to support Israel, $60.8 bill to bolster Ukraine and $8.1 billion to counter China in the Indo-Pacific, including billions for Taiwan. The Israel bill also includes more than $9.1 billion to address humanitarian needs, which Democrats said was necessary for their support.  The fourth bill, which is set to be released later in the day, is geared toward addressing other GOP foreign policy priorities. That measure would allow the sale of frozen assets of Russian oligarchs, potentially force the sale of TikTok and authorize stricter sanctions on Russia, China and Iran. House Republicans are also expected to release a border security bill that would be considered separately.

Boeing ignores safety concerns, production defects, whistleblower says

By Megan Cerullo Edited By Alain Sherter Updated on: April 17, 2024 / 1:11 PM EDT / CBS News Congress calls whistleblower to testify about Boeing safety culture Congress calls whistleblower to testify about Boeing safety culture 01:53 Boeing whistleblowers testified on Capitol Hill Wednesday, alleging that the aviation giant prioritized profits over safety and accusing it of discouraging employees from raising concerns about the company’s manufacturing practices.  Sam Salehpour, a quality engineer at Boeing, said in a prepared statement that Boeing’s emphasis on rapid production undermined its commitment to safety, claiming that managers are encouraged to overlook “significant defects” in the company’s aircraft.   “Despite what Boeing officials state publicly, there is no safety culture at Boeing, and employees like me who speak up about defects with its production activities and lack of quality control are ignored, marginalized, threatened, sidelined and worse,” he told members of a an investigative panel of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. Salehpour had previously said he had observed Boeing workers taking shortcuts in assembling its 787 Dreamliner. “Boeing adopted these shortcuts in its production processes based

Anheuser-Busch beer sales are down. Its non-alcoholic options are on the rise

Hannah Wyman | St. Louis Post-Dispatch (TNS) ST. LOUIS — Anheuser-Busch InBev’s beer sales dropped by $1.5 billion in North America last year, but its nonalcoholic beer sales are exceeding expectations, a shift experts credit to consumers becoming more health-conscious and beverage choices expanding. The company’s no-alcohol beer portfolio, which includes Budweiser Zero, Stella Artois 0.0, O’Doul’s and Busch NA, saw revenue growth “in the high teens,” according to A-B’s annual report. It comes at a good time for the company. Consumers appear to be moving away from alcoholic beverages, according to a report on store-bought alcohol by market research firm Circana. Surveyed consumers’ preference for beer and hard cider shrank from 16% in 2020 to 13.5% in 2023. Wine dropped about 3% in preference, while the spirits/cocktails/coolers category decreased by 1%. Customers are increasingly favoring soft drinks and sports/energy drinks, the report found. But the shrinking preference for alcohol does not point to abstinence, said Scott Scanlon, Circana’s executive vice president of alcoholic beverages. Instead, consumers are less likely to overindulge — especially after drinking more during the pandemic — or are reevaluating their

Jennifer Lopez ‘disappointed’ by ’embarrassing’ concert sales but vows to move on

Jennifer Lopez wouldn’t be such a force in pop culture if she didn’t have the ability to pick herself up after a professional setback and move on to her next project. And that’s what sources say she’s doing in the wake of the “embarrassing” reception to her much-promoted album — her first in 10 years — and her North American concert tour this summer. Yes, the 54-year-old singer/actor/dancer/influencer/entrepreneur is “disappointed” by the “underwhelming” response to her album, “This Is Me … Now,” and the fact that the public hasn’t rushed out to grab up tickets to her “This is Me … Now” tour, one source told Us Weekly. But she’s not letting the “bad press” get to her head, a second source also told the outlet. “Jennifer’s very focused on her next project.” The second source told Us Weekly that Lopez has been through “plenty of problems like this before and has gotten over them,” adding, “She moves on when things like this happen.” Lopez’s latest album peaked at No. 38 on the Billboard 200 albums chart in February, then disappeared, Forbes reported. Lopez faced more

Danny Hurley was right: Data shows Arizona State doesn’t support basketball at the level required to win consistently

Arizona State president Michael Crow has received a torrent of criticism from fans and media members over his mismanagement of the Sun Devils athletic department. But the salvo of all salvos came from a member of the university’s extended family. During a news conference two weeks ago, Connecticut coach Danny Hurley took a moment away from his march to the national championship to address ASU’s basketball program under the leadership of his older brother, Bobby. “You could see why he loves it here — you could see why he values his job here,’’ Danny Hurley said of Bobby prior to the Final Four in Glendale. “When he’s in position to have all the resources that a lot of us at this Final Four have, when he has that at his full disposal, he’ll be up on this dais, and someday, I’ll be supporting him.” The comment couldn’t be taken as anything but a direct shot at ASU’s administration for the state of affairs a few miles away in Tempe. The Sun Devils haven’t reached the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament in 29 years and

Burying canal next step in widening heavily used East Bay road that is community’s only major exit

OAKLEY – This city has crossed one of the final hurdles to expand a rural two-lane road that has often become congested during emergencies and is the only way out for some residents. After an agreement to bury a Contra Costa Water District canal that stood in its way, a stretch of East Cypress Road can now be widened. For residents in the growing far eastern Oakley and Bethel Island area, where thousands of homes are planned, it has served as a thoroughfare, with the only other escape through narrow private roads during a catastrophe, such as the wind-swept fires that led to evacuations several years ago. To remedy the situation, the city plans to widen a portion of the road from two to six lanes, but first it needs to bury the canal now in its path. The Oakley City Council last week agreed to do just that, unanimously approving the design and construction agreement with the water district to replace the canal at East Cypress with a buried pipeline that would also improve drinking water quality. Residents are stuck in traffic as they evacuate the

SAN JOSE — A couple who lived at the same home where 1-year-old Winter Rayo was found dead last year with a horrifically lethal amount of fentanyl in her body will join the child’s parents as unprecedented murder defendants in her death, according to court documents. South Bay residents Phil Ortega, 32, and Paige Vitale, 33, are accused of negligently leaving narcotics around the home off Southwest Expressway where first responders were called Aug. 12 and discovered that Winter had been dead for more than half a day. An autopsy determined that Winter’s blood contained 24 times the lethal dose of fentanyl for her age. Kelly Gene Richardson, left, and Derek Rayo, mother and father of 1-year-old Winter Rayo, who died of a fentanyl overdose in August, appear for their arraignment on Monday, Nov. 27, 2023, at Santa Clara Hall of Justice in San Jose, Calif. Uri Berliner, the veteran NPR journalist who publicly accused his employer of liberal bias, has resigned from the network. Berliner posted a message Wednesday on the social media platform X with his resignation letter to the public broadcaster’s chief executive Katherine Maher. “I am resigning from NPR, a great American institution where I have worked for 25 years,” Berliner wrote. “I don’t support calls to defund NPR. I respect the integrity of my colleagues and wish for NPR to thrive and do important journalism. But I cannot work in a newsroom where I am disparaged by a new CEO whose divisive views confirm the very problems I cite in my Free Press essay.” Berliner, a business editor at the network, was suspended last Friday, four days after the appearance of an April 9 opinion piece for the Substack newsletter the Free Press. His essay said NPR is catering to “a distilled worldview of a very small segment of the U.S. population.” The overall thrust of the piece asserted that NPR has “lost America’s trust.” Berliner was suspended for five days for violating NPR’s policy requiring
