Pursuit suspect leads deputies in chase in reverse on Southern California freeway

Something of a reverse pursuit unfolded this weekend on the 210 Freeway in San Bernardino County after authorities broke up a fight.   Details are limited and it’s unclear exactly how the events transpired, but authorities with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department told KTLA that deputies responded to reports of a fight on Main Street in Rancho Cucamonga.   Several people were arrested after deputies arrived, though one person remained at large.   That suspect, behind the wheel of a white-colored four door sedan, was later spotted, but when deputies attempted a traffic stop, the driver failed to yield and fled westbound on the 210 Freeway.   Suspect seen in footage traveling in reverse on the 210 Freeway in La Verne with deputies in pursuit on Dec. 8, 2024. SF Giants miss out on Soto as he reportedly lands largest deal in sports history

The Giants never emerged as true contenders to sign superstar outfielder Juan Soto after missing out on Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani in recent years. And even if they were in the mix, it’s difficult to envision a scenario where they outbid Steve Cohen. A day after the Giants agreed with shortstop Willy Adames on a franchise-record $182 million pact, Soto and the New York Mets have reportedly agreed to a 15-year, $765 million contract, the largest deal in professional sports history. Soto’s deal includes no deferred money, escalators that can exceed $800 million and an opt-out after five seasons, according to reports. For all the pomp and circumstance surrounding Soto, more relevant to San Francisco is outfielder Michael Conforto reportedly agreeing to a one-year, $17 million deal with the Dodgers and joining former Giant Blake Snell in Los Angeles. Warriors avenge loss to Wolves with cathartic late victory

SAN FRANCISCO — Having scored one point in five minutes, seeing an 11-point lead dissipate into a deficit, the Warriors went to a Steph Curry pick-and-roll on the wing with Jonathan Kuminga. Kuminga slipped to the rim at an angle, catching a pocket pass off the bounce and elevating for a two-handed dunk. The Warriors want to empower Kuminga more offensively, and they’re on the lookout for sets that work. Check and check. Golden State nearly fell into the late-game rut that has plagued them recently, but instead leaned on their defense and manufactured just enough scoring to come back against Minnesota. Gary Payton II picked off Anthony Edwards, igniting a transition break that ended with Buddy Hield’s seventh 3 of the game. Curry, who dished it to Hield in the corner, screamed in celebration with 56.8 seconds left. That was the game-winner. For the exclamation point, Draymond Green threw down an emphatic dunk and borrowed Curry’s “Night-Night” celebration, hitting it several times in the game’s waning moments. To arrive at the rim, he sized up Rudy Gobert and used a Curry ball screen to

Reliever Blake Treinen and Dodgers agree to two-year, $22-million deal

The Dodgers retained a key member of their bullpen Sunday night, agreeing to terms with veteran closer Blake Treinen on a two-year, $22-million contract, according to a person familiar with the deal not authorized to speak publicly about it. Treinen, who missed most of the 2022 season because of a shoulder injury and all of 2023 after undergoing surgery to repair rotator-cuff and labrum tears, regained his All-Star form in 2024, going 7-3 with a 1.93 ERA in 50 games, with 56 strikeouts and 11 walks in 46 ⅔ innings, primarily as a setup man. The 36-year-old right-hander was dominant in the postseason, going 2-0 with a 2.19 ERA and three saves in nine games, throwing 39 pitches over 1 ⅔ scoreless innings to finish a playoff-opening 7-5 win over San Diego and 42 pitches over 2 ⅓ scoreless innings in the Dodgers’ title-clinching win over the New York Yankees. Treinen entered Game 5 of the World Series in Yankee Stadium with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning, runners on first and second and the Dodgers trailing 6-5. Treinen got Anthony Volpe

Prosecutors Want 14 Years for Convicted Ex-Legal Heavyweight Tom Girardi

Prosecutors are asking that convicted former legal titan Tom Girardi be sentenced to 14 years behind bars for ripping off his injured clients, while defense attorneys argue that the disbarred lawyer is a “broke, half-blind, incontinent, 85-year-old man with dementia” who should be placed in a medical facility for the rest of his life, according to court papers obtained Sunday. Girardi, once ranked among the most successful and prominent lawyers in the country, is scheduled to be sentenced in downtown Los Angeles on Friday following convictions on four counts of wire fraud for stealing millions of dollars from clients and spending the money on private jets, golf club memberships, jewelry and the career of his now-estranged wife, “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” star Erika Jayne. In sentencing papers, federal prosecutors write that Girardi should be ordered to pay almost $3.8 million in restitution along with the prison sentence for perpetrating “a cunning fraud scheme against the injured clients he had a sworn duty to protect.” Girardi’s “yearslong theft of client funds from his law firm’s trust accounts and the myriad lies he told to cover

Chargers are beaten down by Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes again, this time on last drive

KANSAS CITY, Mo. —  The Chargers know this all too well. Patrick Mahomes leading a game-winning, clock-bleeding drive. The Kansas City Chiefs kicked a game-winning field goal off the upright to clinch their ninth consecutive AFC West title with a 19-17 win Sunday as the Chargers (8-5) lost their seventh consecutive game to their divisional rival. Six of the wins have come by a single possession, including both of the losses this season, and the Chargers now have lost 11 consecutive games decided by three or fewer points. When Matthew Wright’s 31-yard field goal bounced off the left upright and through the goal posts as time expired, Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh could only stare blankly in front of him with his mouth hanging open. “This one hurts,” Harbaugh said. “We’ll lay down and bleed for a little while. Not long. Then we’ll rise and try again.” Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh tried to show calm after a road loss to the Chiefs. (Ed Zurga / Associated Press) Escaping with 10 wins by one possession this season, the Chiefs (12-1) appeared vulnerable for an upset Sunday. The Chargers

Column: It may be set in a small town, but ‘Somebody Somewhere’ was epic television

Not every epic hero has to travel from Troy to Ithaca, across Middle-earth or Westeros, or along the Yellow Brick Road to battle monsters, forge unlikely friendships, discover hidden powers and vanquish the shadow that threatens to engulf their world. Sometimes, as Dorothy Gale discovered all those years ago, a hero can do all that without ever leaving Kansas. In “Somebody Somewhere,” Sam Miller — another woman who understands the importance of a really big song — does it without even getting a hallucination-inducing knock on the head. For Emmy purposes, the HBO series, which ended Sunday after three seasons, is considered a comedy. And certainly the half-hour show, created by Hannah Bos and Paul Thureen and starring the bawdy comedian/cabaret star Bridget Everett as Sam, can be funny as hell. But like many modern comedies, most recently and famously “The Bear,” “Somebody Somewhere” is equally driven by pathos. Indeed, the series shares certain themes with “The Bear”: the devastation of parental alcoholism, the twisted relationship between talent and self-doubt. (In this part of the Midwest, though, ambitions are smaller, clashes far less operatic. Here

Dodgers miss on Juan Soto, but add outfield depth by signing Michael Conforto

On the eve of MLB’s Winter Meetings, two left-handed-hitting outfielders found new homes on the free agent market. One was the biggest name in the sport this winter, with superstar slugger Juan Soto reportedly agreeing to a staggering 15-year, $765-million contract with the New York Mets, setting a new MLB record. The other flew under the radar everywhere but Los Angeles, with the Dodgers agreeing to a one-year, $17-million contract with veteran Michael Conforto pending a physical, according to multiple people with knowledge of the situation not authorized to speak publicly. Although the Dodgers had been considered one of the finalists for Soto — they met with the four-time All-Star last month and were one of five teams believed to be engaged in his record-setting bidding — the likelihood was always that another team, especially the Mets with their billionaire owner, Steve Cohen, would blow well past anything the Dodgers were willing to spend. So, as Soto’s Mets deal shattered Shohei Ohtani’s previous record total of $700 million (without any of the deferrals Ohtani agreed to with the Dodgers), the Dodgers shifted their focus elsewhere

117,500 SDGE customers warned of possible electrical outages due to wind storm

A red-flag fire warning will be in effect Monday morning through early Wednesday east of Interstate 15 in San Diego County, where emerging drought conditions are making the chaparral unusually dry, the National Weather Service said. San Diego Gas & Electric has notified nearly 117,500 customers that it might have to temporarily turn off their power to reduce the chance of wildfires. Most of the customers live in North County and East County, but some are located along the US border with Mexico, from Imperial Beach and San Ysidro eastern Chula Vista.    Updates Moderate-to-strong Santa Ana winds are expected to begin popping through the mountains and inland valleys and foothills on Monday afternoon and will intensify on Tuesday, when some gusts could reach 50 mph to 60 mph in wind-prone areas like Ramona and Alpine. Driving could become dicey on Interstate 8 east of Alpine. The relative humidity will drop below 20% on Monday afternoon and fall as low as 5% on Tuesday and Wednesday, forecasters said. Such conditions are conducive to the spread of wildfire. Coastal areas also will experience low humidity, but

Juan Soto’s $765M deal with the Mets is the largest in MLB history. Here’s who he passed

Juan Soto and the New York Mets agreed to a record $765 million, 15-year contract Sunday night, a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the agreement hadn’t been announced and was subject to the completion of a successful physical. It’s the 12th contract worth at least $325 million in Major League Baseball. Here are the rest. He turned down Washington’s $440 million, 15-year offer in 2022, was later traded to San Diego and then the New York Yankees before reaching free agency at just 26 years old. Soto is the most accomplished free agent at that age since shortstop Alex Rodriguez agreed to a

Northeast Fresno business victim to online ordering scam

Monday, December 9, 2024 3:51AM FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — It was business as usual for the crew at The Curry Pizza Company in Northeast Fresno on Sunday. The owner, Virender Malhi, said about a week ago he noticed multiple fraud charges for transactions at his Willow and Nees location. “Basically, it’s like a credit card scam,” said Malhi. Malhi said once you’re signed into the telegram app, you can become part of groups. Malhi has gone through the process of using the app to understand how his small business is coming up short changed. “They take their money on cashapp. They use a stolen or a fake credit card and place an order. Juan Soto signs largest contract in professional sports history with New York Mets: ESPN sources

By Jeff Passan Monday, December 9, 2024 3:38AM NEW YORK — Superstar outfielder Juan Soto and the New York Mets are in agreement on a 15-year, $765 million contract, sources told ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the largest deal in professional sports history. The deal includes no deferred money, sources said, and has escalators that can reach above $800 million. Soto rejected a one-year, $21.05 million qualifying offer by the New York Yankees on Nov. 19. The two most sought-after free agents this century have been Alex Rodríguez, a 25-year-old elite shortstop in 2000, and Shohei Ohtani, a boundary-breaking two-way machine last winter. Soto, despite being a below-average corner outfielder, is third on the list: Organizations decided his hitting prowess at his age is that valuable. The 2024 season was one of Soto’s best. He slashed .288/.419/.569 for the Yankees, smacking a career-high 41 home runs and scoring a career-high 128 runs. He finished second in the majors in on-base percentage to teammate Aaron Judge, fourth in slugging, third in OPS, third in wRC+, and fourth in fWAR. Soto turned 26 on Oct. 25, the day of
