Burglars dressed as gardeners targeting San Bernardino County homes

Neighbors remain on edge as burglars dressed as gardeners are targeting homes in San Bernardino County. On Dec. 5, surveillance video captured two masked men in a black SUV approaching a Rancho Cucamonga home on Stoneview Road at around 4:22 p.m.  “It looks like there’s someone who drives up from the front,” a neighbor, who did not wish to be identified, told KTLA. “My understanding is they also broke into the house from the inside [first.]” The neighbor said the suspects were dressed as gardeners or maintenance workers. “I believe they were monitoring the residence because of how quickly it happened, how familiar they were, how they were able to get in and out very quickly,” he said. After parking in the driveway, the first suspect steps out and opens the car trunk. The second suspect opens the home’s garage door from the inside. Officers search for Riverside County fugitives suspected of abusing 18 dogs

Officers are searching for a Riverside County pair who allegedly abused 18 dogs and are wanted for felony animal cruelty, according to animal control officials. Animal Friends of the Valleys (AFV) announced Friday that Sandrine Casterra and Philipp Durand violated bail conditions after their Oct. 7 arrest and have since been fugitives on the run. Casterra and Durand allegedly posed as animal rescuers, AFV says, and they operated their business at the Wooden Nickel Ranch on Holland Road in Menifee. Durand purportedly promotes himself as a renowned rescuer under the name “Wonder Earth Rescue.” In 2023, officials say the pair failed to comply with a pre-seizure order requiring veterinary care for the rescued animals in their care. Animal control officers then executed a search warrant at the ranch and found 18 dogs living in “deplorable conditions.” The dogs were chained in a feces-covered shed with no ventilation, no running water or proper care, according to officials. “Our officers worked tirelessly for months to bring these animals to safety, some of which were so badly abused and neglected that they could not be saved,” said AFV

Review: A real-life incident of white-power terrorism is told with chilling clarity in ‘The Order’

The stare burns hard and clean, with an undercurrent of malice that you’d be a fool to miss. And then there’s another man, also with cold eyes, who gives off the stink of unmet expectations, marital dysfunction and alcohol. The first character, the real-life white supremacist Robert Jay Mathews, is played by Nicholas Hoult, itself a surprise when you consider the actor’s overall likability, something he hasn’t been able to shake since his cherubic turn in 2002’s “About a Boy.” But it’s that second performance, a frowsy FBI agent named Terry Husk, that really stuns you, because it’s Jude Law, going darker than ever. “There’s something about you, coming in here, having these talks around the kids,” a mother tells Husk at a party where he’s already several beers deep. “I don’t like that,” she concludes. “You scare me.” This is a person she’s barely met, but what she senses is enough. “The Order” is about these two taciturn men coming face to face, told with a pared-down tension that, decades ago, made stars out of actors like Charles Bronson. It’s also about a string

Wildfire season isn’t over in SoCal. Warm weekend followed by Santa Ana winds elevates danger

It’s December, but wildfire season is not over yet in Southern California. An unusual warm weekend followed by dry conditions and gusty Santa Ana winds is expected to bring elevated fire danger to Los Angeles and Ventura counties next week. Both counties are under a fire weather watch from 10 a.m. Monday until 6 p.m. Wednesday because of moderate to locally strong winds and very low humidity, according to the National Weather Service. The weather service anticipates upgrading the watch to red flag warnings sometime over the weekend. Above-average temperatures are forecast everywhere other than the coast this weekend, with highs in the low 80s. On Monday, moderate Santa Ana winds are expected to sweep through Los Angeles and Ventura at 20 to 35 mph, with gusts reaching between 35 and 50 mph. On Monday night, localized wind gusts of 50 to 65 mph are predicted for the western San Gabriel, the Santa Susana and western Santa Monica mountains, bringing an even higher risk of fire, according to the weather service. There is a strong likelihood of widespread single-digit humidity on Monday and Tuesday, and

Oceanside trash rates to rise in 2025 & ’26

Oceanside residents will see a 5% hike in trash rates in calendar 2025, the maximum allowed by the city’s contract with Waste Management of California, Inc. The company requested a higher increase, a total of 8.34%, and the contract allows the balance of 3.34% to be rolled over to 2026, along with any additional increase approved next year by the city up to the 5% maximum. The monthly fee of $28.95 for the smallest container will increase to $30.40 in the new year, according to a city staff report. The average increase per residential customer for all sizes of containers is $1.58 per month. Commercial trash rates will go up an average of $5.18 per month, according to the report. The Oceanside City Council approved the new rates Wednesday. The increase is based on a formula using the consumer price index, employment cost index, a fuel cost index, motor vehicle maintenance index and more. Also, according to the report, the current contract approved Nov. 15, 2023, added services such as compost and mulch giveaways, the transition from city to contractor billing, curbside household hazardous waste

Two more ex-Aztec football players settle civil suit alleging rape

Two former San Diego State University football players have settled a civil suit brought by a woman who accused them of raping her at a 2021 house party off-campus, leaving one remaining defendant when the trial is scheduled to start next month. The woman’s attorney made the announcement Friday during a status conference in San Diego Superior Court. The terms of the settlements with the two former players — Zavier Leonard and Jaiden Brown — were not disclosed during the hearing, nor were terms mentioned in court documents the woman filed last month asking to have Brown dismissed from the case. As of Friday, there were no documents in the court’s online file indicating the settlement with Leonard. The settlements come a year after the woman dropped from the case its most high-profile defendant: star punter Matt Araiza, who fought the allegations, insisting he had left the party before the alleged incident. One final former player — Nowlin Pa’a Ewaliko — remains in the case, which is slated to go to trial in January. The woman’s attorney, Dan Gilleon, told Superior Court Judge Matthew Braner

Connecticut court upholds $965 million verdict against Alex Jones in Sandy Hook

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — The Connecticut Appellate Court on Friday affirmed a $965 million verdict from 2022 against conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, determining there’s “sufficient evidence” to support the damages awarded to relatives of the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre victims and an FBI agent. In its unanimous opinion, the court cited the “traumatic threats and harassment” the families endured “stemming from the lies, as propagated by the defendants, that the Sandy Hook massacre was a hoax.” “Our review of the record reveals that there was sufficient evidence to support the $965,000,000 in compensatory damages awarded by the jury,” according to the 62-page decision. It marks the largest jury verdict in Connecticut history. The appellate court did grant Jones a $150 million reprieve. It determined the plaintiffs “failed to assert a legally viable” claim under the Connecticut Unfair Trade Practices Act and that $150 million in punitive damages awarded by the lower court must be vacated, noting the plaintiffs alleged injury came from false language and not from speech related to advertising, marketing or the sale of goods.
