Hot weather poses new risk as thousands remain without power after deadly Houston storm

HOUSTON — As the Houston area works to clean up and restore power to hundreds of thousands after deadly storms left at least seven people dead, it will do so amid a smog warning and scorching temperatures that could pose health risks. National Weather Service meteorologist Marc Chenard said on Saturday that highs of around 90 degrees (32.2 C) were expected through the start of the coming week, with heat indexes likely approaching 100 degrees (38 C) by midweek. “We expect the impact of the heat to gradually increase … we will start to see that heat risk increase Tuesday into Wednesday through Friday,” Chenard said. The heat index is what the temperature feels like to the human body when humidity is combined with the air temperature, according to the weather service. “Don’t overdo yourself during the cleanup process,” the weather service’s Houston office said in a post on the social platform X. In addition to the heat, the Houston area could face poor air quality during the weekend. Heavy rainfall was possible in eastern Louisiana and central Alabama on Saturday, and parts of Louisiana

SF Giants to give Marco Luciano ‘a good shot’ at shortstop job

SAN FRANCISCO — Bob Melvin perched himself on the top step of the third-base dugout Saturday morning and directed his gaze toward shortstop. Marco Luciano was fielding ground balls while Nick Ahmed made throws to first base, wearing a black brace where his glove would typically be on his left wrist. As long as Ahmed, 34, remains out, the Giants manager intends to get a good look at the 22-year-old still considered the organization’s shortstop of the future. “We patched it together with Casey (Schmitt) for a few days and Casey did a nice job,” Melvin said. “But if Marco’s going to be here, Marco’s going to play some shortstop. That’s why he’s here.” Amid the Giants’ recent rash of injuries, Luciano was one of the last players on the 40-man roster who remained at Triple-A Sacramento. Initially when Ahmed was placed on the injured list, the club called up Schmitt, who played serviceable defense and provided a clutch hit but otherwise went 3-for-22 (.136) in six games. Prior to this season, injuries limited Luciano to only 74 games and fewer than 300 at-bats between

Kurtenbach: Las Vegas likes the 2024 49ers more than I do. But let me explain my side

The 49ers might have lost the Super Bowl in Las Vegas, but they sure made a good impression while they were there. The NFL’s schedule was released on Wednesday, and while we’ve known the Niners’ opponents for months now, discovering the order – and times — for those 17 games was enlightening. The Niners will have a brutal second half of their schedule. Eight of the final 10 games of the season will be played against 2023 playoff teams. But the bookies in the desert (or are they just computers in a server farm, now?) like the 49ers to win more than 11 games this season — the team’s over-under win total for 2024 is set at 11.5. I would take the under. While I did pick the Niners to win 11 games in my way-too-early prediction Wednesday, I simply see more ways this could go wrong than right. Twelve wins would be a hell of an accomplishment against this schedule. Thirteen wins seem outside the realm of logic (but certainly not the heart). Let me explain: I’m betting the Niners have a Super Bowl

Dow Jones stock index crosses 40,000: Good or bad for California?

The stock market’s venerable yardstick, the Dow Jones Industrial Average, just made history – crossing 40,000 for the first time. Yes, this milestone set Thursday, May 16, is only a brief emotional victory for shareholders. Yet it can be seen as a historical milepost for the broader business climate, especially in California. To honor the moment, the trusty spreadsheet reviewed the Dow’s 5,000-point markers and how California fared in those periods using an economic metric (California unemployment), an interest rate (the average 30-year fixed mortgage), and home prices from the California Association of Realtors. As we begin our data-filled voyage, let’s note the Dow first crossed 5,000 in November 1995 — back when you could buy the median-priced California single-family home for $176,000. 5,000-point mileposts Dow passes 10,000 in December 1999: It took the stock index just over four years to double from 5,000 compared with a 28% gain for California homes to $225,000 in the same timeframe. This was an era when the economy broke loose from its early 1990s slumber. California unemployment dipped between 1995 and 1999 to 5% from 7.9% while mortgage
