Oakland A’s: Ruiz’s wrist ‘sore,’ will have MRI Monday to determine injury

OAKLAND — Esteury Ruiz was present and not ruled out of action Sunday, but the prognosis of the speedy Athletics’ outfielder won’t be known until he undergoes further testing. Ruiz left in the sixth inning of Saturday’s 20-4 win over the Miami Marlins after diving for a ball that wound up being a hit. He remained down for a time after appearing to injure his left (glove) hand and was removed from the game in favor of Seth Brown. “He’s sore today,” Athletics manager Mark Kotsay said. “We have an MRI set up for tomorrow so I’ll know more detail.” Ruiz wasn’t in the starting lineup but wasn’t wearing a splint or a wrap on his glove hand. Kotsay wouldn’t go so far as to rule Ruiz out of the series finale against Miami. “I wouldn’t (say) unavailable,” Kotsay said. “In the right situation we may use him.” Ruiz is hitting .262 with two home runs, seven RBIs and four stolen bases while being caught three times. Unlike the full-time role Ruiz had most of last season when he led the majors with 67 stolen

Israel orders Al Jazeera to close its local operation and seizes some equipment from channel

TEL AVIV, Israel — Israel ordered the local offices of Qatar’s Al Jazeera satellite news network to close Sunday, escalating a long-running feud between the broadcaster and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s hard-line government as Doha-mediated cease-fire negotiations with Hamas hang in the balance. The extraordinary order, which includes confiscating broadcast equipment, preventing the broadcast of the channel’s reports and blocking its websites, is believed to be the first time Israel has ever shuttered a foreign news outlet. Al Jazeera went off Israel’s main cable provider in the hours after the order. However, its website and multiple online streaming links still operated Sunday. The network has reported the Israeli-Hamas war nonstop since the militants’ initial cross-border attack Oct. 7 and has maintained 24-hour coverage in the Gaza Strip amid Israel’s grinding ground offensive that has killed and wounded members of its own staff. While including on-the-ground reporting of the war’s casualties, its Arabic arm often publishes verbatim video statements from Hamas and other militant groups in the region. It’s Cinco de Mayo time, and festivities are planned across the US. But in Mexico, not so much

The United States is gearing up for Cinco de Mayo. Music, all-day happy hours and deals on tacos are planned at venues across the country on Sunday – May 5 – in a celebration with widely misunderstood origins that is barely recognized south of the border. In the U.S., the date is largely seen as a celebration of Mexican American culture stretching back to the 1800s in California. Typical festivities include parades, street food, block parties, mariachi competitions and baile folklórico, or folkloric dance, with whirling dancers wearing shiny ribbons with braids and bright, ruffled dresses. For Americans with or without Mexican ancestry, the day has become an excuse to toss back tequila shots with salt and lime, and gorge on tortilla chips smothered with melted orange cheddar that’s unfamiliar to most people in Mexico. The focus on drinking and eating has brought some criticism of the holiday, especially as beer manufacturers and other marketers have capitalized on its festive nature and some revelers embrace offensive stereotypes, such as fake, droopy mustaches and gigantic straw sombreros. What it is Cinco de Mayo marks the anniversary

Face The Nation: Fetterman, Khanna, Queen Rania

Missed the second half of the show? The latest on…Democratic Sen. John Fetterman tells “Face the Nation” that although he knows his state will be “very competitive” in the 2024 election, “Joe Biden beat Trump in Pennsylvania and he’s going to do that again”, Rep. Ro Khanna, Democrat of California, tells “Face the Nation” that as some campus protesters have engaged in violence or antisemitism, “it is diminishing the thousands of young people who simply want the war to end”, and Queen Rania al Abdullah of Jordan tells “Face the Nation” that the Arab world sees the U.S. as an “enabler” of Israel. “People view the U.S. as being a party to this war,” she said.

DIMES: As Durant suffers another sweep, Curry’s streak with Warriors deserves praise

Warriors beat writer Danny Emerman shares his thoughts on the NBA playoffs and beyond. After losing Game 3 of their first-round series against the Minnesota Timberwolves on April 27, Phoenix Suns guard Bradley Beal said, “I’ve never been swept in my life. … I’ll be damned if that happens.” Cut to a media session after putting up a dud in Phoenix’s Game 4, season-ending loss. “I’ll be damned, man,” Beal said. Sweeps are a point of pride in the NBA; if the best players in the league can’t even will their team to a single win in a series, that tends to follow them around. But almost every NBA great has been swept at one point or another. By Beal’s standards, nearly every superstar is damned — every superstar except Steph Curry. Curry has never been swept out of the playoffs in his career. In fact, the shortest series his Warriors teams have ever lost ended in six games. There are caveats — the Warriors with Curry are 0-3 in play-in games — but in the modern game, that’s an unprecedented level of rising to

Let’s say the Sharks win the draft lottery. Then what?

SAN JOSE – Winning this week’s NHL Draft Lottery and selecting Boston University center Macklin Celebrini first overall in June will not cure all that ails the San Jose Sharks. But bringing in college hockey’s best player from this past season, and potentially a No. 1 center for years to come, is not a bad start. “One player’s obviously not going to turn this thing around by himself,” Sharks center Nico Sturm said in March. “But I think we do miss players who are game changers, who can create something out of nothing.” The Sharks hope the ping pong balls bounce their way Tuesday when the NHL conducts its draft lottery in Secaucus, N.J. San Jose has a 25.5% chance, more than any other team, of winning that lottery and ending up with the No. 1 overall pick. So if the Sharks win it, then what? After Sharks general manager Mike Grier and other members of the team’s front office stand on stage inside the Las Vegas Sphere next month and select Celebrini with the No. 1 overall pick, what’s the next step? To be

Rooker hits 2 homers in an inning, rookie Harris hits 2 as A’s reach .500 by blowing out Marlins

OAKLAND — First came the rain, followed by the thunder. Flexing their offensive muscle for the first time this season, the Athletics exploded for 10 runs in the third inning in a 20-4 win over the Miami Marlins Saturday at the Coliseum following a rain delay of nearly three and a half hours. Their sixth consecutive win evened the A’s record at 17-17, nine games better than the 8-26 record they held after 34 games a year ago. Brent Rooker had two home runs — his seventh and eighth of the season — and five RBIs in the third inning as the A’s sent 14 men to the plate in the inning. JJ Bleday added a three-run shot, his fourth, as a paid crowd of 7,809 enjoyed the show. Brett Harris, called up from Triple-A Friday, had his first career hit with a solo shot to lead off the fourth inning and then added a two-run homer against Darren McCaughan in the sixth. A bit of history here — Rooker is the first A’s player since Mark McGwire in 1996 to hit two home runs
