Injuries begin to pile up for SF Giants as Michael Conforto lands on IL

SAN FRANCISCO — Bob Melvin sighed and shrugged his shoulders. “It’s just something you deal with,” the Giants manager said Sunday morning, addressing the latest injury to strike his group of position players. “We’re going through it right now. Sometimes it happens in bunches. Seems like that’d the case at this point.” Before first pitch of their series finale against the Reds, the Giants announced a transaction that is beginning to feel repetitive. Another member of their starting lineup was placed on the injured list with a prospect called up from Triple-A Sacramento to take his place. On Sunday, it was Michael Conforto who became the sixth San Francisco position player to hit the IL in the past eight days when an MRI revealed a strain in his right hamstring. Patrick Bailey (concussion) and Jung Hoo Lee (foot) only returned to the lineup the past two games, and the Giants are still missing Jorge Soler (shoulder), Nick Ahmed (wrist), Austin Slater (concussion) and Tom Murphy (knee). Making matters worse, Conforto was one of the few hitters producing for a lineup that has averaged 3.0 runs

Without lottery luck, Warriors lose first-round pick

As their odds foreshadowed, the Warriors are giving up their first-round pick to the Portland Trail Blazers. The ping pong balls didn’t bounce the Warriors’ way, as their pick landed at No. 14 — where Portland will pick. The only way the Warriors could have used the pick this year is if they had jumped from 14th into the top four of the lottery, an outcome that had just a 3.37% chance based on the lottery. The Warriors traded their 2024 first-round pick in 2019 to Memphis in a package that included Andre Iguodala. The pick has changed multiple hands since, from Memphis to Boston to Portland, and will now end up with the Blazers. Because of its 46-36 record, Golden State was the last lottery team, with the lowest odds — less than 1% — at winning the top pick. While the Warriors didn’t beat the odds, a different team did. Atlanta, who finished 36-46 and had a 3% chance at landing the top pick, won the lottery and will have the chance to select French center Alex Sarr, whom many experts consider the

LOS ANGELES — A photo of what appears to be a happy – and smiling – black bear looking over Pasadena, California has become a hit on social media. “I find where I see animal tracks or animal activity happening and a nice scene I want to establish then I set the camera there, and I leave it for several weeks,” said Los Angeles photographer Johanna Turner. “Then I come back and see what happened.” Well, something certainly happened two weeks ago when that smiling bear stepped in front of her trail cam. “You know right away that you got something good,” said Turner. Over the past 10 years, Turner has photographed a wide variety of California wildlife, including mountain lions and bears. “California has everything near the city that they have in the Sierra Nevada,” she said. “I really wanted to show how close this wildlife is to Los Angeles and all these people.”

5/12: Face the Nation

This week on “Face the Nation,” Secretary of State Antony Blinken joins Margaret Brennan as America’s relationship with Israel faces a serious stress test this week, with a new U.S. report that says it is “reasonable to assess” that Israel violated international law in its war with Hamas. Plus, a story about how a group of special operations veterans helped a fellow service member’s family get their mother out of war-torn Gaza.

Face the Nation: Cotton, Van Hollen

Missed the second half of the show? The latest on…Republican Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas tells “Face the Nation” that it is different from actions taken by President Ronald Reagan in the 1980s.” “Israel is fighting a war of survival against a terrorist group that committed the worst atrocity against Jews since World War II,” he added, Democratic Sen. Chris Van Hollen of Maryland tells “Face the Nation” that the Biden administration has set a “very low bar for what’s acceptable” from Israel in a report on that country’s use of U.S. weapons in the war against Hamas, and Zahra Skaik, a 44-year-old Palestinian woman living in Gaza City, escaped the war thanks to her sons – one of whom is an infantryman in the U.S. army. Margaret Brennan sat down with Skaik recently as she described how she left Gaza with nothing but a small backpack and the same clothes she had been wearing since the war began.

Mother’s Day: The A’s connected me and my mom for 56 years, starting with Hunter’s perfect game

One of the most agonizing aspects of the A’s long goodbye to Oakland is knowing when to cut the emotional ties. For some, it was the moment the team announced it is moving to Sacramento after this season. Or Opening Day. It might not be until Sept. 26, the final game at the Coliseum. Others will be able to hold out until the final pitch in an Oakland uniform is thrown three days later in Seattle. Fate picked my expiration date. On May 8, 1968, a fresh-faced young pitcher named Jim “Catfish” Hunter delivered the A’s first signature moment: a perfect game, thrown during the 11th home game of the franchise’s first season in Oakland. Jim Hunter comes off the mound to take a return throw from catcher Jim Pagliaroni and that’s exactly what Minnesota wound up with nothing, on May. 9, 1968, in Oakland. The scoreboard shows Minnesota 0 in the 9th inning of a game with the Oakland Athletics here last night as pitcher. Hunter threw a perfect no hit, no run, no walk game won by the Athletics 4-0. DIMES: The Warriors’ 2024 Draft Lottery chances and conventional wisdom

Warriors beat writer Danny Emerman shares his thoughts on the NBA playoffs and beyond. General consensus says this is a good year for the Warriors to give up the first-round draft pick they traded away in 2019. Experts consider this a weak rookie class. If the Warriors’ top-four protected pick owed to the Blazers doesn’t convey this year, it rolls over to the next year, as a top-one protected pick in the hyped Cooper Flagg draft. The Warriors would be better off with a 2025 pick than a top one this year, the thinking goes. But conventional wisdom, in this case, is overthinking it. Of course, the Warriors should want to luck into a top-four pick on Sunday night’s Draft Lottery. If the ping pong balls bounce the Warriors from 14 into the top four (3.37% chance), they’d keep the pick and get to select either a potential plug-and-play contributor or flip the asset to a team in search of instant rookie gratification. In an environment in which the degree of difficulty for building a contender around 36-year-old Steph Curry increases with each passing year

Mother’s Day: What A’s broadcaster Jenny Cavnar learned from her Mom and is sharing with her own kids

Jenny Cavnar, the first woman to be a primary play-by-play announcer for a major league team, has grown accustomed to operating in male-dominated spaces. That familiarity that began well before she picked up a microphone. During Cavnar’s childhood, her mother, Dode, signed her up for an all-boys T-ball team. Cavnar, who would also attend baseball camps hosted by her father in which she was the only girl, heard the familiar — if not obvious — quips about her being different, an early prelude to the battles she faced when rising through the broadcasting ranks. To Dode, her philosophy was simple. “As a mom, you always support your kids no matter what,” Dode said. “We’re here for her, and we always will be.”  “I’m so grateful for a mom that was my biggest cheerleader,” Cavnar said. “She constantly let me do things and push the envelope growing up if it’s something I had a passion to do. Her encouragement and support were all so vital in me really having a belief that I could do anything I want.” Jenny Cavnar with her mother Dode and father

Roger Corman, Hollywood mentor and ‘King of the Bs,’ dies at 98

LOS ANGELES — Roger Corman, the Oscar-winning “King of the Bs” who helped turn out such low-budget classics as “Little Shop of Horrors” and “Attack of the Crab Monsters” and gave many of Hollywood’s most famous actors and directors early breaks, has died. He was 98. In 2009, Corman received an honorary Academy Award. “There are many constraints connected with working on a low budget, but at the same time there are certain opportunities,” Corman said in a 2007 documentary about Val Lewton, the 1940s director of “Cat People”
