Mike Yastrzemski channels family history to power SF Giants over Red Sox at Fenway

BOSTON — Since the jewel box ballpark opened in 1912, there had been 238 instances of a Yastrzemski depositing a baseball on the other side of one of Fenway Park’s fences. All but one of them belonged to Carl Yastrzemski, who slugged the final homer of his Hall-of-Fame career in 1983, seven years before his only grandson was born. Four decades later, Mike Yastrzemski carried on his family lineage’s on this turf, increasing the count to 239 to power the Giants’ 3-1 win Thursday afternoon over the Red Sox. Sending a knee-high cutter from Red Sox starter Josh Winckowski into the Boston bullpen beyond right field, Yastrzemski gave the Giants their first run and the only one they were able to scratch across until rallying for two more in the seventh to break a 1-1 tie. Making it even more special, the home run came on the same day Yastrzemski’s Hall-of-Fame grandfather paid a rare visit to Fenway Park. After rounding first base, Yastrzemski gestured to the right field seats, then pointed to the sky as he touched home plate. The Giants salvaged a win

49ers’ GM Lynch on trade talks for Aiyuk, Samuel: ‘We’re past that now’

SANTA CLARA — A week ago, the NFL world was abuzz about whether the 49ers would trade wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk or Deebo Samuel for a high draft pick. Neither got dealt, and neither will be, general manager John Lynch expressed Thursday during a 30-minute, expansive interview on ESPN’s “The Pat McAfee Show.” “During the course of drafts and offseasons, do conversations happen? Absolutely they do,” Lynch said. “We’re past that now. “We’re thrilled to add to that group (of) Jauan Jennings, Brandon Aiyuk, Deebo Samuel, Chris Conley, Ronnie Bell, Danny Gray, and now you add Ricky Pearsall, Jake Cowing. We made an already strong group even stronger.” Pearsall was the 49ers’ first-round pick, at No. 31 overall, and Cowing was selected in the fourth round. While the 49ers entered Phase II of their voluntary offseason program this week, this offseason’s top business priority remains a potential extension for Aiyuk, who is set to play for $14.1 million salary on the fifth-year, team option on his rookie deal. “I’m doing everything in my power to keep our roster together. That’s my goal. And I don’t

Trump hush money trial prosecutors ask for more gag order sanctions

Molly Crane-Newman | New York Daily News NEW YORK — A judge considered holding Donald Trump in contempt yet again on Thursday for more potential gag order violations as his hush money trial resumed in Manhattan. Before jurors took their seats for the day, state Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan heard arguments from prosecutors and the former president’s attorneys concerning four more instances of Trump publicly commenting on witnesses and jurors in the case. Prosecutor Chris Conroy alleged Trump had sought to “infect and disrupt” the proceedings by his repeated remarks, including comments just hours before the last contempt hearing on Tuesday, when he was fined $9,000 for nine offending posts on his Truth Social account and held in contempt. Merchan at the time said further violations could result in jail. “It’s not just any jurors, it’s these jurors in this case who are going to be sitting here in a few minutes,” Conroy said, citing comments disseminated by Trump claiming the “jury was picked so fast, 95% Democrats.” “By talking about the jury at all, he places this process and this proceeding here in jeopardy.” Trump has

Trump says ‘a lot of people like it’ when he floats the idea of being a dictator

People don’t seem to mind the idea of former President Donald Trump acting as a dictator, he told Time magazine in an interview that drew swift rebuke from the Biden-Harris campaign. In a wide ranging interview given to the magazine — and shared by the 45th President Tuesday morning via his Truth Social media platform — Trump was asked to explain comments he made to Fox News host Sean Hannity, in which the former president said he would become a dictator on his first day in office. “A lot of people like it,” Trump reportedly told Time. As might be expected, President Joe Biden’s reelection team was quick to note the revelations contained in the interview and respond. “Not since the Civil War have freedom and democracy been under assault at home as they are today – because of Donald Trump. Trump is willing to throw away the very idea of America to put himself in power,” Biden-Harris 2024 Spokesperson James Singer said in a statement. “In his own words, he is promising to rule as a dictator on ‘day one,’ use the military against

Gregory Sanon said he was driving to work, north of Seattle, when a steel beam came through his windshield. “Seriously, I thought I was dead. Everybody says I need to go buy a lottery ticket because I was lucky,” he said. According to police, a man was seen throwing debris off an overpass. The beam, which was more than 4 feet long, hit Sanon’s passenger seat and steering wheel. “It hit the car so hard, but I think it didn’t hit me. It hit the steering wheel, even the steering wheel bent from the impact,” he said. In Michigan, a similar case turned deadly.
