Photos: Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame inducts the class of 2024

Brian Sabean, nearly 30 years after his arrival here, entered the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame alongside Patrick Marleau, John Taylor, Jenny Thompson and Chris Wondolowski. Six months after Patrick Marleau entered the San Jose Sports Hall of Fame – alongside Wondolowski – he joined Owen Nolan (2014) as the only Shark in the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame. He was drafted No. 2 overall in 1997, and his No. 12 jersey was retired last year by the Sharks, for whom he played three stints. Chris Wondolowski, 41, is this hall of fame’s first San Jose Earthquakes player. He is also the lone member of this year’s class who is a Bay Area native (Danville) and continues to reside here. John Taylor may be known best for his Super Bowl-winning, last-minute touchdown catch for the 1988 49ers; he won the Super Bowl three times and made the Pro Bowl twice. On the morning of her BASHOF induction, Jenny Thompson returned to Stanford for a 5:30 a.m. swim. “It was really reminiscent of working your butt off, then seeing the sun rise and the

Tehama County Board of Supervisors to learn more about the Voluntary Oak Woodland Management Plan

RED BLUFF—  Livestock and Range Advisor Josh Davy will give an information presentation on the voluntary oak woodland Management Plan on Tuesday and ask the supervisors to adopt the updated plan revised by the Hardwood Advisory Committee. In 1994, the Board approved the highly successful Voluntary Oak Woodland Management plan. The committee was reconvened at the Board’s request to update the 30-year-old document, which is now presented for acceptance as amended. The goal of this plan to the stewardship and conservation of Tehama County’s oak woodlands by informing landowners of their value and voluntary incentives to protect them, sustain ranching practices that maintain wildlife habitat as well as clean water and air to provide a high-quality of life, create planning that is consistent with oak woodland conservation and conduct public education and outreach regarding oak woodlands According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county’s estimated population grew from 63,463 in 2010 to 65,245 in 2022. Healthy parenting: Infant massage promotes bonding

RED BLUFF – A respectful and trustful human touch can lead to a greater bond and understanding between parents and children, according to health and wellness professionals. First 5 Tehama hosted an infant massage trainer during the last week of April and first week of May. There were 16 professionals who participated in the training, including home visitors, health educators, early educators, and behavior specialists. The participants earned their training certificate through Infant Massage USA. “This is timely because the Tehama child abuse rate is 78.9 per 1,000, which is higher than California rates of 43.5 per 1,000. Infant massage is an evidence-based technique to calm babies and take away parents’ stress, including prevention of child abuse due to shaken baby syndrome,” Heidi Mendenhall, Executive Director of First 5 Tehama, said. Other Tehama County programs involved in the training include Help Me Grow Tehama County, Tehama County Library, Tehama County Healthy Families Tehama, Northern California Child Development Inc., and E-Center Migrant Seasonal Head Start and Migrant Early Head Start. Participants from outside the area also attended the training. Jeana Williams, support worker for Healthy Families

Faith in the Face of Darkness | Everyday Cheapskate

Have you ever felt like you’re supposed to be learning a lesson but don’t know what it is? I know that feeling in a way that I hope I will never forget. Not once but twice in a single month, the power went out at our home. The first time, a drunken, inexperienced 17-year-old driver plowed into a major utility pole in our neighborhood, turning it into kindling. Down it came, along with power to 4,300 homes. The driver was fine, but I cannot vouch for the state of her teenage freedom in the aftermath of making such terrible choices. Utility crews worked tirelessly for 22 hours to restore power. The second event affected the very same 4,300 homes. High winds met with high-tension wires, resulting in a high-priced transformer blowing up. Apparently, the crew got a lot of practice the first time around. Power was restored within two hours. I now know complete darkness. Pitch-black, dark-enough-to-see-stars kind of darkness (a phenomenon not experienced often in a brightly lit metropolitan area). It’s eerie for sure. In my heart and mind, I know where things are

“She was just such a bright light”: friends remember 11-year-old killed in Madera County Crash

MADERA, Calif. (KFSN) — A ray of sunshine with a personality that could fill a room, that’s how friends are remembering 11-year-old Amelia Marsh who was killed in a car crash in Madera County Saturday night. Early Saturday evening, life as the Marsh family knew it changed entirely as they lost 11-year-old Amelia. “She was just such a bright light to everybody,” said Dicie Wheaton, Family Friend. That light suddenly extinguished. Friends said Amelia, her parents Andrea and Chuck, and younger siblings were headed for an evening of fun at Defy Jump Park in Fresno, but they didn’t make it there. CHP investigators said her father was driving south on 41 and Jewels Vista Court when he lost control of their SUV in the rain, colliding with two other vehicles. Amelia died in the crash. Her mom was taken to Community Regional Medical Center, and her younger siblings to Valley Children’s, where they all continue to recover. The news of her death came as a shock to friends who remember the little girl with a big heart and who was devoted to her faith. “It

Anna Rohrer was the first woman to cross the finish line during a half marathon this weekend in Indianapolis. She ran the 13.1 miles in about 1:15. She says she was a little slower this year for obvious reasons, but proved that women have superpowers. Copyright © 2024 KABC Television, LLC. All rights reserved.

A’s bullpen can’t hold on as late Seager home run lifts Rangers

By ERIC HE | Associated Press OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Corey Seager hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning and the Texas Rangers rallied past the Oakland Athletics 4-2 on Monday night. The defending World Series champions were trailing 2-0 until Seager drilled a full-count pitch from Lucas Erceg (1-2) over the right-center wall with two outs. Texas added an insurance run in the ninth on an error by first baseman Tyler Nevin. Kirby Yates got three outs for his sixth save. The A’s, who are leaving Oakland at the end of this season for Sacramento while they await a new stadium in Las Vegas, drew a season-low 2,895 fans at the Coliseum. Texas has won four of five, and tied a season high with its three-game win streak. The A’s have dropped two in a row after winning six straight. Darell Hernaiz and Esteury Ruiz each had a sacrifice fly for the A’s. Rangers starter Andrew Heaney allowed two runs in six-plus innings as he dueled with counterpart Alex Wood, who pitched six scoreless innings. Texas was 0-6 in games started by Heaney

Met Gala was in full bloom with Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, Mindy Kaling among the standout stars

UPPER EAST SIDE, Manhattan — The Met Gala and its fashionista A-listers on Monday included Jennifer Lopez, Zendaya and a parade of others in a swirl of flora and fauna looks on a green-tinged carpet lined by live foliage. Lopez went for silver leaves in a second-skin goddess gown and Zendaya was all vamp and fantasy in a rare double appearance on the steps of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Both were co-chairs of the annual fundraiser at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, along with Chris Hemsworth and Bad Bunny. The museum’s exhibition this year was “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” which officials say involves pieces from their archives, some so delicate they’ll be laid out in glass coffins like “Sleeping Beauty.” Guests for the night were told to follow a dress code and the theme is “The Garden of Time,” inspired by J.G. Ballard’s 1962 short story of the same name. It’s Met Gala time and the fashion parade of A-listers included a swirl of flora and fauna looks on a green-tinged carpet surrounded by foliage. Lopez (in Schiaparelli) was all va-va-voom in a near-naked

This Valley farm looks to add beautiful flowers to your home

Tuesday, May 7, 2024 1:56AM Valley farms aren’t only about growing food. Some of them help beautify your home or help you celebrate a big occasion. FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) — Jen Hull’s backyard hobby has grown into a field of dreams in Fresno County. A gentle breeze helps spread the fragrant aroma of flowers. “I always try to add an element of scent, just to enhance the senses a little,” Hull said. But many of the varieties might not sound very familiar. “A lot of people love the Anenomes, the Campanulas, there’s Larkspurs and Scabiosas,” Hull said. Colorful plots dot Hull’s backyard. “It’s a lot of soft pinks and blushes, peaches, cream,” Hull said. Pretty flowers can remind you of a loved one. “They bring a lot of joy and love and meaning to people,” Hull said. Hull has always had freckles, so she named her business Freckled Flower Farms. Jen urges folks to buy local when it comes to ordering flowers. “I would say about 80% of the flowers that we have in the states come from South America,” she said. “It’s very

Clovis High School students recognized for artwork on mental health

Tuesday, May 7, 2024 1:49AM Clovis Unified and the Fresno County Department of Behavioral Health teamed up to promote wellness and end the stigma surrounding mental health. CLOVIS, Calif. (KFSN) — In just a few days, a billboard in east central Fresno will look very different. As drivers head north on Clovis Avenue toward Clinton Avenue, they’ll see the artwork of Clovis High freshmen, Avi Nguyen and Mailene Gorospe. “It was very shocking and amazing, and it was very unexpected,” Nguyen said. Avi and Mailene were one of 50 contest entries. Their poster ended up being chosen by other Clovis Unified students as the winners of the 2nd Annual Mental Health Awareness Poster Contest. In their poster, there are two bears hugging and comforting one another. Those bears are inside a circle, which the students say represent the bubble some may put themselves in when struggling with their mental health. But on the outside of that bubble, life is still filled with beauty, represented by the flowers, hearts and butterflies. Avi and Mailene’s message is just as powerful as the art… “My struggles don’t define

Giants ex-GM Brian Sabean, others relish Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame induction

SAN FRANCISCO – Brian Sabean’s right hand sported one of his three championship rings from his tenure as the San Francisco Giants’ general manager. On Monday night, he marveled at the lineup in front of him. Sabean, nearly 30 years after his arrival here, entered the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame alongside Patrick Marleau, John Taylor, Jenny Thompson, and Chris Wondolowski. “I had no idea an honor like this would be in the wings,” Sabean, 67, said. “I’m very humbled and flattered by my induction because hall of fames are basically for great players, and I’m not going in that category. “But I appreciate the recognition because we had a special group and a special operation as far as how our organization did things over time,” added Sabean. “That led to three World Series in five years, and we were lucky enough to go to four and win three.” Sabean and Monday’s other inductees professed gratitude for the Bay Area serving as a hospitable host en route to their awe-inspiring careers. Now working as an advisor to the New York Yankees and living in

‘It’s not an easy division’: A’s preparing for tough stretch against AL West foes

OAKLAND — The A’s (17-18) currently sit one game below .500 in early May, much to the surprise of the baseball world at large, and over the last handful of weeks, they’ve captured a fair bit of attention. The extra eyes have been warranted. Mason Miller, who could go viral on any given night, won American League Reliever of the Month for April. Brent Rooker, who blasted two home runs in one inning in Saturday’s 20-4 win, just won American League Player of the Week. Oakland has won eight of its last 10 games, and despite all that has unfolded in recent months, the vibes are good. The next two weeks will determine whether they stay that way. “It’s going to be a quiz for us,” infielder J.D. Davis said. “I wouldn’t say it’s the test or the midterm, but it’s going to be a quiz for us.” Beginning on Monday, the A’s begin a two-week gauntlet against the best of the American League West. They’ll host the Rangers (19-16), the defending champions, for four games to conclude their home stand. That’ll be followed by
