Two lawmakers who never agree on anything are taking a stand | Flowers

John F. Kennedy won the Pulitzer Prize for his book “Profiles In Courage,” a series of essays that focused on eight senators throughout U.S. history who — despite serious pressures from their colleagues and constituents — did what they believed to be the right and moral thing. I have always been fascinated with people who find within themselves the ability to defy expectations, anger their presumed allies and follow their own conscience. It is a rare quality, rarer still in this current climate of tribalism. But last week, two men showed up on my radar screen, polar opposites in their demeanor and their politics. Their courage derives from a refusal to accommodate the blatant antisemitism that is infecting our streets, our media, our campuses and our hearts in the wake of Oct. 7. Pennsylvania’s junior Sen. John Fetterman has shown immense integrity, wrapped in Western Pennsylvania grit, by confronting the pro-Palestinian advocates who regularly demand that he condemn Israel. Not only has he waved an Israeli flag at them, he’s mocked them as they should be mocked. My favorite incident involved an invocation of the Millenials’

2 men detained after several fliers with religious texts taped to Northwest Fresno places of worship

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — Two men have been detained after several fliers containing opinions on religious views were posted on two Northwest Fresno places of worship. Fresno Police were called to the Temple Beth Israel at 4:18 p.m. for a report of two men shouting and placing fliers on the temple. Officers in the area quickly made their way to the St. Anthony’s of Padua on Bullard and Maroa avenues, where the men had moved on. When Action News crews arrived on scene, multiple police vehicles were surrounding a van parked alongside the church. “We’re looking at all the laws that may have been violated,” said Lt. Marcus Gray II with the Fresno Police Department. “This is a private campus. Things concerning being on that campus, everything is going to be in play when we’re looking at this investigation.” Spray paint on the side of the van spelled out “repent or perish,” the same phrase on the fliers posted at the Jewish temple and St. Anthony’s of Padua. Investigators say the men were detained but so far, no charges have been filed. Fresno Animal Control

(KFSN) — California State University has allocated over $4.6 million to advance and elevate black students across its 23 campuses. “One of the messages that came through very clearly is that they did not want this action plan to be another report on the shelf, and we have taken that charge very seriously,” says California State University Deputy Vice Chancellor of Academic and Student Affairs Dilcie Perez. She adds that the University system is taking action to help advance black student success across all 23 universities by allocating over $4.6 million. So when we made the restaurant, we said, let’s not just stick to one genre. Let’s be a hybrid of BBQ.” Locals and area workers pack the place because the staff goes big on everything they do, like the tri-tip sandwiches. “It just became muscle memory,” explains Tony Harris in the kitchen. “Like the look of it, how much is going to fit on the bun, what looks good on the bun as far as the mound goes. Height and presentation is always a big key.” Towering sandwiches match the
