FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) — A man has been arrested after hundreds of dead and live animals were discovered in deplorable conditions in Laton. The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office arrested 41-year-old Carl Mendes Friday at a home on Mt. Whitney Avenue and Chestnut Street. Deputies say somebody passing through the area noticed the property and called the Sheriff’s Office. When Action News crews arrived on the scene, you could smell the stench from the property. When deputies arrived, they found the property with close to 300 animals living in “total disarray” and hundreds of other dead animals. The animals include pigs, goats, sheep, chickens and more. Mendes was arrested on child neglect charges because he has four teenagers living at the home with him. Deputies say he will likely face animal neglect charges as well. FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — Fresno Unified’s Board of Trustees has unanimously voted for Misty Her to be the interim superintendent. The video above is from an earlier story and will be updated. Her served as Bob Nelson’s Deputy Superintendent and was expected to fill the interim role if no replacement was found by August 1. She is now the first woman ever to lead the Fresno Unified School District. The board will ratify her contract at the next meeting scheduled for Wednesday, May 8 This comes as the board continues the process to find a replacement for the current superintendent, Bob Nelson. FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — A new cover to protect those who have risked their lives to serve our country. “I just personally can’t thank the community to come together and help us,” said VFW Post 8900 member, Thomas Richardo. Friday, the VFW Post 8900 received a $50,000 check from Chevron and $150,000 check from the city of Fresno. Last July the roof came crumbling down, causing damage inside and outside. Fire investigators say the age of the building and weight of the A-C units likely caused the roof to cave in. FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — Around 4:30 Thursday afternoon, Fresno Police say they got reports of men shouting and taping up fliers at Temple Beth Israel in Northwest Fresno. Those men are now identified as 32-year-olds Christopher Avila, Daniel Watson and Colin Laurila. “It’s keeping people on edge, which is not where we want to be,” Temple Beth Israel Rabbi Rick Winer said. Police say when the men were approached by staff, they started quoting Bible verses and questioning their beliefs — eventually threatening the employees if they were to take the signs down. “We got through some of the demonstrations in Fresno peacefully, and that was nice, and then here on campus, someone decided to violate our sanctuary here, and it’s unnerving,” Rabbi Winer said. “The nice thing is there was no damage.” Officers say the men were involved in a similar incident at another place of worship before the one at the Temple Beth Israel. PHILADELPHIA — In search of offense, the Giants lost one of their most productive hitters in the second inning of their series opener Friday night against the Phillies. As Alec Bohm’s walk-up music rang through Citizens Bank Park, catcher Patrick Bailey motioned to the Giants dugout. He requested the training staff and appeared to tell them, “I’m dizzy.” The catcher accompanied head trainer Dave Groeschner and manager Bob Melvin back to the dugout and was replaced by Tom Murphy. The Giants announced midway through the game that Bailey was being evaluated for blurry vision. CHICO — It appears a hefty rain storm is scheduled to hit Northern California on Saturday before quickly moving on. Bill Rasch, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Sacramento office said the storm is expected to take hold Saturday morning and bring with it considerable precipitation and a slightly lower snow level. Rasch said the temperature is also expected to drop. “(Friday was) in the 80s and (Saturday) the highs will be in the 50s,” Rasch said. “It’s a fast mover too. It should be mostly sunny on Sunday.” Chico is looking at more than an inch of rain, much like surrounding valley areas such as Red Bluff, Oroville and Orland. Paradise and surrounding foothills can expect as much as 2.14 inches of rain. Additionally, Rasch said wind gusts could go as high as 35 miles per hour. RED BLUFF — The Red Bluff Police Department said today that Salisbury High School has been closed due to a medical incident that sent multiple staff members and one student to the hospital. According to an RBPD press release, on Friday morning, its resource officer reported that an intoxicated female student showed up at school. After getting eliminated from the first round of the playoffs by Denver, the Los Angeles Lakers fired head coach Darvin Ham. Among the candidates they’re expected to consider to replace Ham, according to The Athletic, is current Warriors assistant coach Kenny Atkinson. Atkinson joined the Warriors in 2021 and won his first NBA championship that season as an assistant coach. He previously worked as the head coach of the Brooklyn Nets, as well as an assistant to Ty Lue with the Clippers, Mike Budenholzer in Atlanta, and Mike D’Antoni in New York. Atkinson has been sought after before; last season, he reportedly turned down the chance to become the Hornets’ head coach after informally agreeing to an offer. The Warriors’ bench has experienced some brain drain in recent years, as Mike Brown left to lead the Kings and Jama Mahlalela departed for Toronto. PHILADELPHIA — Three months since an aneurysm was discovered in his right shoulder, Tristan Beck was cleared to throw a baseball Friday and will begin his progression to return to the mound sometime this season. The big step for Beck, 27, came after his latest follow-up appointment with Stanford vascular specialist Dr. Jason Lee, and was just one of a number of developments among injured Giants pitchers that the team provided before opening a four-game series against the Phillies. Beck will start a light throwing program Monday in San Francisco, joining Alex Cobb in throwing off flat ground. Cobb, 36, played catch Thursday for the first time since experiencing discomfort in his shoulder and is expected to progress to 60-75 feet over the weekend. Neither pitcher can be activated until May 27, though manager Bob Melvin indicated it’s more likely Cobb will be ready by then than Beck. “Beck’s going to be a while,” Melvin said. “Until he actually gets on a mound, we’re really not sure when that’s going to be yet. FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — Two out of the three men arrested for allegedly trespassing at places of worship in Fresno are now out of jail. Police say 32-year-old Christopher Avila is still in custody, while 32-year-old Colin Laurila and 32-year-old Daniel Watson were cited and released. They were arrested Thursday afternoon at Saint Anthony’s of Padua Church in northwest Fresno. Police say they had first tried to post religious flyers at an unnamed place of worship and at the Temple Beth Israel on Maroa Avenue. They were reportedly involved in confrontations with employees at both facilities, before driving off to Saint Anthony’s, where they were arrested. All three men are facing misdemeanor charges for trespassing. Avila is also facing a felony charge for allegedly making criminal threats. Police say there’s no indication of any hate crimes. (KFSN) — The path is now clear for Bakersfield Assemblyman Vince Fong to run for the congressional seat vacated by Kevin McCarthy. Secretary of State Shirley Weber has dropped her appeal to challenge Fong’s eligibility to appear on the ballot for the 20th Congressional District. Fong filed to run for Congress after McCarthy announced his resignation last December. This came after Fong had already filed to run for re-election to the State Assembly. The secretary of state originally wanted Fong removed from the November general election ballot. A recent court ruling said the Republican can remain on the November ballot for Congress. CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Law enforcement officers from across the country honored the life of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Officer Joshua Eyer on Friday. Eyer was one of four officers shot and killed Monday while trying to serve a warrant to a convicted felon. Friday’s services started with a precession at 9:30 a.m. Eyer’s body in a flag-draped coffin was brought from police headquarters on a horse-drawn caisson three blocks to the church where the late evangelist Billy Graham held his first crusade. Officers lined the street as dozens marched playing bagpipes and drums. Behind them were hundreds more Charlotte-Mecklenburg officers walking quietly in dress uniforms to the church where an American flag hung from the top of a firetruck’s tall ladder. There was a huge turnout at the church, blocks down from a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police station. About 2,000 people packed inside between the main service and the overflow room. There were also about 500 people outside of the church. The church said there were two truckloads of flowers and a third on standby.
