A healthy 49er: Hufanga is back and looks to surpass 2022 All-Pro form

SANTA CLARA — Talanoa Hufanga was sitting at his locker Thursday, flanked by Ji’Ayir Brown to his left and Deommodore Lenoir to his right. Fred Warner emerged from an area off-limits to the media to provide an introduction as the 49ers safety met the media for the first time since being cleared to play from a torn right ACL last Nov. 19. That was 12 games ago, including the 2023 postseason. The 49ers will be without Christian McCaffrey and Deebo Samuel when they visit the Los Angeles Rams Sunday at SoFi Stadium. As for tight end George Kittle (hamstring) and cornerback Charvarius Ward (hamstring/knee), both of whom couldn’t practice, who knows? Also unknown is how much Hufanga, a first-team All-Pro and Pro Bowler in 2022, will play. Both he and coach Kyle Shanahan were circumspect about his role. Regardless, with injuries swirling around the 49ers, having Hufanga back in any role was reason for smiles all around. “My daughter was walking before I was, and that puts it in perspective, and you’ve got to humble yourself in that sense,” Hufanga said. “I took it hour

Kurtenbach: The 49ers are struggling to protect Brock Purdy. It’s a problem that could torpedo the season

If you’re wondering what the 49ers offense might look like once Brock Purdy is one of the highest-paid players in the NFL in years to come, you’ll likely get a sneak preview on Sunday. The Niners will perhaps be without arguably their three most important offensive weapons, sidelined stars Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel, and perhaps tight end George Kittle, who missed Thursday’s practice with a hamstring injury. Among the Niners’ first-string offensive weapons, Purdy might only have two — Brandon Aiyuk and fullback Kyle Jusczyzk — against the Rams. “It sucks not having your guys,” Purdy said Thursday. “We’ve got a really good scheme, a good playcaller… I still have to do my job with my reads and progressions more so than I need to change the way I think.” Still, it’s a tough gig for the soon-to-be $60 million-per-year quarterback. Not that anyone is taking pity on him. But the task will be near-impossible if the 49ers’ offensive line doesn’t significantly improve in protecting the Niners’ quarterback. Last week against the Vikings, Purdy was sacked six times. Not all of those sacks were the

Purdy: Oakland A’s departure was three decades in the making

Didn’t have to happen. We all know that. But why? Today, the Oakland A’s begin their final homestand as the Oakland A’s. Like other Bay Area baseball consumers, my wife and I made a pilgrimage to the Coliseum this month for a personal farewell to the Athletics in the Bay. Soaking in the melancholy atmosphere, we recalled taking our kids there on sunny 1980s afternoons. That was before the NFL Raiders returned to the Coliseum in 1995 and spawned Mount Davis, the centerfield monstrosity that was constructed for $500 million — and was subsequently tarped off after the Raiders couldn’t sell tickets in the seats they’d demanded to be built. Just one of the ridiculous machinations that led to the A’s next-season departure to Sacramento. And then, purportedly, to Las Vegas. Didn’t have to happen. We all know that. But why? The bile right now is aimed at A’s owner John Fisher, who has worked hard to earn all of it. But there is far more to the story. The A’s evacuation fiasco was perpetrated by bad judgment and arrogance on the part of A’s

Corning City Manager Brant Mesker advocates for south county

RED BLUFF —  Corning City Manager Brant Mesker spoke out for the southern regions of Tehama County during a recent discussion regarding funding for the Red Bluff-Tehama Chamber of Commerce. Mesker agreed that the chamber serves the community in many ways, but he had concerns about how the chamber interacts with smaller municipalities and jurisdictions. According to the city manager, the two towns have needs and cultural differences, such as Corning having many Hispanic-owned businesses. “What that outreach looks like in comparison to what you would do in Red Bluff is significantly different,” he claims. Corning’s local priority would be the growth of businesses, regardless of size. According to Mesker, that might refer to helping aspiring entrepreneurs with financial concepts who need more know-how to turn them into reality and assisting established local businesses. He suggested this could be done by expanding web platforms, employment services and development to educate and diversify the local population so that it is more hireable. Mesker asked for greater engagement with the city, which could come from more boots on the ground to support local businesses or producing data

Iranian hackers sent information stolen from Trump campaign to Biden campaign, FBI says

WASHINGTON — Iranian hackers sought to interest President Joe Biden’s campaign in information stolen from rival Donald Trump’s campaign, sending unsolicited emails to people associated with the then-Democratic candidate to interfere in the 2024 election, the FBI and other federal agencies said Wednesday. There’s no indication that any of the recipients responded, officials said, and several media organizations approached during the summer with leaked stolen information have also said they did not respond. Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign called the emails from Iran “unwelcome and unacceptable malicious activity” that was received by only a few people who regarded them as spam or phishing attempts. The emails were received before the hack of the Trump campaign was publicly acknowledged, and there appears to be no evidence the recipients of the emails knew their origin. The announcement is the latest U.S. government effort to call out what officials said is Iran’s brazen, ongoing work to interfere in the election, including a hack-and-leak campaign that the FBI and other federal agencies linked last month to Tehran. U.S. officials in recent months have used criminal charges, sanctions and public advisories

Huge Australian king penguin chick Pesto grows into social media star

By ROD McGUIRK Friday, September 20, 2024 11:37AM The latest on Pesto the Penguin, a viral penguin weighing 46 pounds at only 9 months old. A huge king penguin chick named Pesto, who weighs as much as both his parents combined, has become a social media celebrity and a star attraction at an Australian aquarium. Weighing 22 kilograms (49 pounds) at 9 months old, Pesto is the heaviest penguin chick the Sea Life Melbourne Aquarium has ever had, its education supervisor Jacinta Early said on Friday. By contrast, his doting parents, Hudson and Tango weigh 11 kilograms (24 pounds) each. Pesto’s global fame has grown with his size. More than 1.9 billion people around the world had viewed him through social media, an aquarium statement said. He ate more than his own substantial body weight in fish in the past week: 24 kilograms (53 pounds), Early said. The veterinary advice is that that quantity of food is healthy for a chick approaching adulthood. His growth will plateau as he enters his fledging period. He has started to lose his brown feathers and will replace them

Asteroid to enter Earth’s orbit temporarily: What to know about ‘mini-moon’

The Earth is getting a second moon for a limited time beginning the end of September. An asteroid will come close enough to Earth to temporarily enter its orbit at the end of the month, a phenomenon dubbed as “mini-moon,” according to astronomers. Starting from Sept. 29, the asteroid, which was discovered by NASA on Aug. 7 from the Arjuna asteroid belt, will be orbiting the Earth for about two months until Nov. 25. ALSO SEE: This is when peak northern lights activity will occur Researchers at the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System – a NASA-funded program – detected the asteroid using an instrument in Sutherland, South Africa and named it as 2024 PT5. The asteroid is tiny compared to the size of the Earth’s moon, measuring about 10 meters in length. Speaking to ABC News, Astrophysics Professor Adam Frank from the University of Rochester explained the so-called mini-moon phenomenon. What is a mini-moon and how does this work? “What we’re having here is an asteroid, which is basically a flying mountain in space that usually orbits close to the Earth, or orbits in the

This is when peak northern lights activity will occur

A busy series of northern lights activity will soon come to a peak as the sun reaches its solar maximum stage in the coming months. Several regions in the United States were treated to a multicolored light show earlier this week due to an increase in solar storm activity. The Aurora Borealis display stretched as far south as Arizona, Mississippi and Texas on Monday, images show. The event followed other viewings in the U.S. in May and January. Opportunities to see the northern lights are expected to increase in the coming months. In this image taken with a long exposure, people look at the night sky towards the northern lights, or Aurora Borealis, May 10, 2024, in Estacada, Ore. AP Photo/Jenny Kane, File How are the northern lights created? Every 11 years, the sun’s magnetic field reaches its solar maximum, in which the number of solar flares is at its highest, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Space Weather and Prediction Center. The northern lights occur when atoms and molecules in Earth’s atmosphere clash with a solar flare, which causes the atoms in

Will the Federal Reserve cut interest rates again this year?

The Federal Reserve handed down a large interest rate cut this week, dialing back the central bank’s fight against inflation and signaling welcome relief for borrowers. It remains to be seen, however, whether the Fed will continue to lower rates and further ease the burden for people and companies saddled with loans. The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), a policymaking body at the Fed, on Wednesday forecast further interest rate cuts. By the end of 2024, interest rates will fall nearly another half of a percentage point from their current level of between 4.75% and 5%, according to FOMC projections. Interest rates will drop another percentage point over the course of 2025, the projections further indicated. Speaking at a press conference in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, Fed Chair Jerome Powell said the projections reflect expectations that the economy will sustain the same pair of trends that prompted the rate cut in the first place: falling inflation and rising unemployment. RELATED: The Federal Reserve is finally lowering rates | Here’s what consumers should know “These projections, however, are not a committee plan or decision,” Powell said.

8 Orange County firefighters injured as wildfire crew truck crashes on SoCal freeway

By ABC7.com staff Friday, September 20, 2024 6:27AM An Orange County Fire Authority truck for hand crews fighting wildfires crashed on the 241 Freeway in Irvine, resulting in eight injuries. IRVINE, Calif. — Eight Orange County firefighters returning from battling the Airport Fire were injured in a rollover crash on a freeway in Irvine Thursday night. Officials say six firefighters suffered major injuries and two others had minor injuries when the hand-crew truck struck a guard rail and overturned. It apparently was caused by a ladder that was in lanes on the 241 Freeway. A vehicle ahead of the fire truck swerved to avoid the ladder and the truck swerved too, striking the guardrail on the right shoulder and flipping over, according to the California Highway Patrol. Orange County Fire Authority Chief Brian Fennessy provides new details after eight firefighters were injured in a crash. “These are the toughest things to have to deal with. It breaks my heart,” said OCFA Fire Chief Brian Fennessy. “I know my team and all the rest of the firefighters in the OCFA and throughout the region and the

Van Ness Village rallies around businesses impacted by fire

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — These are literally dark days for three businesses at Van Ness Village in Fresno’s Tower District. The electricity remains shut off at The Labyrinth Art Collective, Spokeasy, and Jazzy Jeans N Things after a damaging fire on Monday afternoon. The Fresno Fire Department says something ignited outside the building. Property owner David Owens commended crews for working quickly keeping most of the damage to a back storeroom, but the damage was enough to impact the individual businesses. Owens expects a challenging process to restore power. “Of course, we just want them to say, get an electrician, check out all the wiring, fix it up and go, but it’s not going to be that easy I don’t think,” said Owens. On Wednesday, Spokeasy opened its doors to sell the canned beers they had in stock and the community showed up buying up everything in their fridge. “It’s a beautiful thing, it really is. It makes us feel like we’re not just trying to like take care of this on our own, we have all these people that have our back and it’s

Dine and Dish: Compa Franks in Madera

Friday, September 20, 2024 1:39AM A taste of Sinaloa awaits you at Compa Frank’s on Howard Road and Dwyer Street in Madera. MADERA, Calif. (KFSN) — A taste of Sinaloa awaits you at Compa Frank’s on Howard Road and Dwyer Street in Madera. Compa is short for “compadre.” “All of the family is from Sinaloa,” says owner Frank Flores. “My mom makes more of the traditional seafood, and my dad makes more of the traditional Mexican food,” says Manager Benny Flores. “I think it’s the best way to integrate those cultures together.” A searing hot stone bowl holds a bubbling favorite. “One molcajete Azteca with a compa special salsa inside,” Frank said. “We make sure we got the lava rock nice and hot so that way, it continues to marinate all the meat,” Benny said. “All the juices combine very well.” They soak into the steak, chicken and chorizo. Grilled cactus or nopal helps the molcajete stand out. A tortilla, homemade by Benny’s mom every day, holds in that wonderful mixture. Something is always sizzling or smoking. “We have some chicken and state fajitas —

Pleasant Valley State Prison inmate who killed cellmate stuffed weapon in mattress: Investigator

Friday, September 20, 2024 1:11AM 15 years after an inmate was murdered at the Pleasant Valley State Prison, a jury is now learning where investigators say the suspect hid his weapon. FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — 15 years after an inmate was murdered at the Pleasant Valley State Prison, a Fresno County jury is now learning where investigators say the suspect stashed his weapon. Prosecutors have charged Marcus Faulk with one count of murder. Media reports from 2009 say Faulk killed his cellmate, Jason Shawn Cannon, who was 35 years old and serving a 32-month sentence for resisting arrest. On Thursday, jurors heard evidence about a prison-made weapon investigators found in Faulk’s cell. It was stuffed in a mattress. “As I recall, it was embedded in the stuffing,” Fresno County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant Hector Palma said. “In the center somehow.” Prosecutors say Faulk had a pact with another prison inmate to kill their cellmates. But Faulk denies the murder charge and has pleaded not guilty. Faulk’s public defender called on the prison’s current chief of mental health, who has reviewed reports about Faulk’s mental health diagnosis.
