Israeli military intelligence chief resigns over his role in failing to prevent Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack

TEL AVIV, Israel — The head of Israeli military intelligence resigned on Monday over the failures surrounding Hamas’ unprecedented Oct. 7 attack, the military said, becoming the first senior figure to step down over his role in the deadliest assault in Israel’s history. Maj. Gen. Aharon Haliva’s resignation could set the stage for more resignations among Israel’s top security brass over Hamas’ attack, when militants blasted through Israel’s border defenses, rampaged through Israeli communities unchallenged for hours and killed 1,200 people, mostly civilians, while taking roughly 250 hostages into Gaza. That attack set off the war against Hamas in Gaza, now in its seventh month. “The intelligence directorate under my command did not live up to the task we were entrusted with. I carry that black day with me ever since, day after day, night after night. I will carry the horrible pain of the war with me forever,” Haliva wrote in his resignation letter, which was provided by the military. Haliva, as well as other military and security leaders, were widely expected to resign in response to the glaring failures that led up to

Will there be a ‘superbloom’ this year in California? Here’s what to know

Carpets of yellow, orange and gold flowers are beginning to cover Southern California’s vast deserts, the Bay Area’s dramatic bluffs and even near Los Angeles International Airport. But do they add up to a “superbloom”? There is no single definition of the event, but so far this year’s blooms haven’t been as vibrant or abundant as those that took over swaths of California last spring following drought-busting rains. This year, too, the state received ample winter rains. After especially wet winters, bursts of color may appear in the spring, drawing droves of visitors to California and other parts of the Southwest to glimpse the flowering fields and pose for pictures. Here are some key facts about the natural spectacle: What’s a superbloom? Scientists don’t agree on any one definition. Across California and Arizona, there are stretches of desert that can quickly transform into dense fields of wildflowers, since seeds lie dormant in the soil and then germinate and blossom at around the same time. A recent study found that such widespread blooms, which have been visible by satellite imagery in some years, take place after

Lengthy Oakland A’s road trip gets off to dismal start

CLEVELAND — The Oakland A’s might have entered this 10-game road trip feeling somewhat upbeat about the way they had been playing so far this month. The A’s three-game series against the Cleveland Guardians demonstrated that several improvements still need to be made. Left-handed reliever T.J. McFarland gave up a three-run double in the seventh inning to Josh Naylor, turning a close game into a rout Sunday as A’s lost 6-2 to the Guardians, who completed a three-game sweep of Oakland and continued their best start in 25 years. With the A’s trailing 3-2, Naylor, who celebrated a two-run homer on Saturday by bashing the top of his helmet with his bat before rounding the bases, fell behind 0-2 in the count before doubling with the bases loaded off McFarland. “He’s something else right now,” said Guardians first-year manager Stephen Vogt said of Naylor, who is batting .406 (13 of 32) with 14 RBIs in nine home games. The A’s were likely all too eager to get to New York and start a four-game series with the Yankees Monday in the Bronx. Sunday’s loss was

How climate change could impact forests

Dr. Tana Wood, an ecologist with the U.S. Forest Service, is running experiments to see what might happen to forests if temperatures rise by seven degrees Fahrenheit, the worst-case scenario by the end of the century. Among the impacts, it appears forests could lose some of their ability to absorb carbon, which contributes to rising temperatures. David Schechter has the story.

Israeli strikes on Gaza city of Rafah kill 22, including 18 children, as US advances aid package

RAFAH, Gaza Strip — Israeli strikes on the southern Gaza city of Rafah overnight killed 22 people, including 18 children, health officials said Sunday, as the United States was on track to approve billions of dollars of additional military aid to Israel, its close ally. Israel has carried out near-daily air raids on Rafah, where more than half of Gaza’s population of 2.3 million has sought refuge from fighting elsewhere. It has also vowed to expand its ground offensive against the Hamas militant group to the city on the border with Egypt despite calls for restraint, including from the U.S. “In the coming days, we will increase the political and military pressure on Hamas because this is the only way to bring back our hostages and achieve victory. We will land more and painful blows on Hamas – soon,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement. He didn’t give details. The first Israeli strike in Rafah killed a man, his wife and their 3-year-old child, according to the nearby Kuwaiti Hospital, which received the bodies. The woman was pregnant and the doctors saved the
