By NICK PERRY and DAVE COLLINS (Associated Press) Columbia University canceled in-person classes on Monday and new demonstrations broke out on other U.S. college campuses as tensions continue to grow over Israel’s war in Gaza. Police arrested several dozen protesters at Yale University on Monday morning after officials at the New Haven, Connecticut, school said they defied warnings over the weekend to leave. And following arrests last week at Columbia, pro-Palestinian demonstrators set up encampments on other campuses around the country, including at the University of Michigan, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of North Carolina. The developments came hours before the Monday evening start of the Jewish holiday of Passover. Last week, police arrested more than 100 pro-Palestinian demonstrators at Columbia who had set up an encampment on the New York City campus. On Sunday, a rabbi at Columbia sent a WhatsApp message to more than 200 Jewish students, urging them to leave the New York City campus if they did not feel safe. Columbia President Minouche Shafik said in a note addressed to the school community Monday that she was “deeply
SANTA CLARA — Ten draft picks await the 49ers this week. If they use them all, that would equal their largest draft class since 2017, when coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch arrived to rebuild the franchise into a perennial contender. Yes, they have a first-round pick to use for the first time since their 2021 Trey Lance boondoggle, but, if you dig deeper into who is on this roster, middle-round selections abound. Of the 75 players on the roster — 15 vacancies exist for the draft and its aftermath — that includes 52 players who were drafted into the NFL, 31 by this 49ers’ regime. “You always have to make sure the draft is a lifeblood. That’s the only way to make sure to have sustained success,” 49ers CEO Jed York said at last month’s NFL meetings. “We made a decision (in 2021) to invest three first-round picks in a quarterback that didn’t turn out to be the right choice. We got very lucky and very fortunate that a guy we drafted in the seventh round (Brock Purdy, 2022) made up for

RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. (KABC) — Construction is expected to begin Monday on a $12 billion high-speed passenger rail line between Southern California and Las Vegas. Brightline West aims to lay 218 miles of new track between a terminal to be built just south of the Las Vegas Strip and another new facility in Rancho Cucamonga. That trip usually takes well over three hours by car. The company says its fully-electric train will take just over two hours each way. Almost the full distance is to be built in the median of Interstate 15, with a station stop in the Victorville area. Forecasts are for 11 million one-way passengers per year, or some 30,000 per day, with fares well below airline travel costs. The trains will offer rest rooms, Wi-Fi, food and beverage sales and the option to check luggage. In a statement, Brightline Holdings founder and Chairperson Wes Edens called the moment “the foundation for a new industry.” Brightline aims to link other U.S. cities that are too near to each other for flying between them to make sense and too far for people to

The original “Tomb Raider” games turned Lara Croft into an iconic character in the ’90s. As the series has gone through changes, longtime fans have contested that the old trilogy is still the peak of the series. Now that “Tomb Raider I-III Remastered” is out, gamers can go back to that fabled trilogy. The games star Lara Croft, an experienced treasure hunter who travels the globe searching for rare and legendary artifacts. The original games were innovative in the new wave of 3D action games. As the name implies, this new package features remastered graphics and updated controls while retaining the same levels and core gameplay elements. Anyone new to these older titles is going to want to get oriented to the controls as Lara’s movement definitely shows its age. The basics of running and jumping are easy enough, but making precise jumps or ones across a large gap can be a pain. Even with the updated control scheme, things like platforming and working the camera remind you that the game is around 30 years old. Puzzles are also a mixed bag. Some are intuitive
By MICHAEL R. SISAK, JENNIFER PELTZ, ERIC TUCKER and JAKE OFFENHARTZ (Associated Press) NEW YORK (AP) — For the first time in history, prosecutors will present a criminal case against a former American president to a jury Monday as they accuse Donald Trump of a hush money scheme aimed at preventing damaging stories about his personal life from becoming public. A 12-person jury in Manhattan is set to hear opening statements from prosecutors and defense lawyers in the first of four criminal cases against the presumptive Republican presidential nominee to reach trial. The statements are expected to give jurors and the voting public the clearest view yet of the allegations at the heart of the case, as well as insight into Trump’s expected defense. Attorneys will also introduce a colorful cast of characters who are expected to testify about the made-for-tabloids saga, including a porn actor who says she had a sexual encounter with Trump and the lawyer who prosecutors say paid her to keep quiet about it. Trump is charged with 34 felony counts of falsifying business records and could face four years in
