Protestors removed by officers after disrupting board of regents meeting at UC Merced

MERCED, Calif. (KFSN) — The board of regents meeting at UC Merced was put on hold after a disruption by protestors in the audience on Wednesday. At several points during the meeting, demonstrators in the audience were heard yelling over board members as they were speaking. After a final warning, the board asked officers from the California Highway Patrol to remove the students from the room. “I hereby request the appropriate police officer make a declaration of unlawful assembly and clear the room,” said one of the Board of Regents. This comes after UC Merced students set up an encampment on Sunday ahead of the three-day board of regents meeting on campus. Over the last four days, the crowd has grown significantly larger, and so has the tension. During Tuesday’s meeting, the board of regents told protestors their call to divest from companies and institutions that support Israel was a complex issue that would require selling $32 billion of investments. “I don’t think that’s a very complex issue. I think that corporate greed might be a complex issue and maybe they might be having to

Supreme Court orders La. to use contested map for election

By Mark Sherman and Kevin McGill | Associated Press WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered Louisiana to hold congressional elections in 2024 using a House map with a second mostly Black district, despite a lower-court ruling that called the map an illegal racial gerrymander. The order allows the use of a map that has majority Black populations in two of the state’s six congressional districts, potentially boosting Democrats’ chances of gaining control of the closely divided House of Representatives in the 2024 elections. The justices acted on emergency appeals filed by the state’s top Republican elected officials and Black voters who said they needed the high court’s intervention to avoid confusion as the elections approach. About a third of Louisiana is Black. The Supreme Court’s order does not deal with a lower-court ruling that found the map relied too heavily on race. Instead, it only prevents yet another new map from being drawn for this year’s elections. The Supreme Court could decide at a later date to hear arguments over the decision striking down the Louisiana map. The court’s three liberal justices dissented

With Bailey, Murphy banged up, SF Giants sign veteran to shore up catching depth

SAN FRANCISCO — As Curt Casali entered the Giants’ clubhouse before the team’s series finale against the Dodgers — a clubhouse he had called home on many occasions — his teammates greeted him with an unexpected barrage of confetti, a surprise that Casali admits caught him off guard. “I think I probably shed a tear,” said Casali, who started Wednesday night against the Dodgers. “Coming back here is like coming home. I had some of the best years of my professional baseball life here. Some of my best friends are still here. Not many people get to do it again, so I’m just very, very thankful.” While the circumstances are far from ideal, the Giants, having signed Casali to a one-year deal on Wednesday, are happy to have the veteran backstop back in their clubhouse. “A lot of the things that you want from that position, he does very well,” said manager Bob Melvin. “I know our guys, especially the ones who have been around him before, are excited.” In a corresponding move, catcher Jakson Reetz was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento while fellow backstop Tom

Kurtenbach: The 49ers’ 2024 schedule is out, so let’s make some reckless predictions

The 49ers have been done no favors by the NFL scheduling computers. Just another reason to hate the machines. Sure, the defending NFC champions will be given an easy enough entry into the season, but the team’s November and December are poised to be brutal, with eight of the team’s final 10 games coming against playoff teams last season. Shake off those Super Bowl hangovers early, gang — any early loss could prove fatal to the team’s bid to return to the Big Game. Here’s a quick thought on the 49ers’ 17 games and a way-too-early, please-don’t-hold-me-to-this prediction on each contest: Week 1: Jets [Monday Night Football] This game is a cruel joke on Aaron Rodgers, who tore his Achilles tendon in last season’s Monday Night Football opener. It couldn’t happen to a nicer, saner guy! Prediction: Win (1-0); We’re fast approaching the return of Robert Saleh to the Bay Week 2: at Minnesota The Vikings could be a good team this upcoming season, but they’re going to be working through some things at the beginning of the season. Will the Vikes go with Sam

Prime-time spotlight shines on 49ers as schedule reveals six night games

SANTA CLARA – Six prime-time kickoffs are strewn across the 49ers’ schedule, dawning with a Sept. 9 opener against the New York Jets, then saving the NFC Championship Game rematch with the Detroit Lions for Dec. 30. Both of those games are on “Monday Night Football” at Levi’s Stadium, where a bit of a dark cloud hovers over those bright lights. The 49ers lost both of their Monday night games last season – at Minnesota in Week 7, and against Baltimore on Christmas. That dropped the 49ers to 4-6 on Mondays since 2017 under coach Kyle Shanahan. Mind you, last season’s Super Bowl-bound 49ers did win their three other prime-time games: The home opener against the Giants, Week 5 against the Cowboys, and Thanksgiving night at the Seahawks. The Lions’ Monday night visit comes in the regular season’s penultimate week, so NFC playoff seeding could be on the line if both franchises follow last season’s path to the top two seeds. Between prime-time affairs at Seattle (Thursday, Oct. 10) and against Dallas (Sunday, Oct. 27) is a Super Bowl LVIII rematch against the Kansas City

US border arrests fall, bucking usual trend of spring spike

Associated Press WASHINGTON — Arrests for illegally crossing the U.S. border from Mexico fell more than 6% in April to the fourth lowest month of the Biden administration, authorities said Wednesday, bucking the usual spring increase. U.S. officials have largely attributed the decline to more enforcement in Mexico, including in yards where migrants are known to board freight trains. Mexico won’t allow more than 4,000 illegal crossings a day to the U.S., Alicia Barcena, Mexico’s foreign relations secretary, told reporters Tuesday, down from more than 10,000 Border Patrol arrests on some days in December. Migrants were arrested 128,884 times in April, down from 137,480 in March and barely half a record-high of 249,737 in December, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said. While still historically high, the sharp decline in arrests since late December is welcome news for President Joe Biden on a key issue that has nagged him in election-year polls. San Diego became the busiest of the Border Patrol’s nine sectors along the Mexican border for the first time since the 1990s with 37,370, replacing Tucson, Arizona. Doctors fighting for life of Slovakia Prime Minister Robert Fico, gravely wounded in shooting

PRAGUE — The Slovak defense minister says doctors are fighting for the life of the country’s prime minister, who was shot multiple times after a political event. Defense Minister Robert Kalinak, a close ally of Prime Minister Robert Fico in his Smer-Social Democracy party, made the remark Wednesday evening to reporters at a hospital in Banska Bystrica. He said an operation on Fico was not yet complete and described his condition as “extraordinarily serious.” THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Slovakia’s populist prime minister, Robert Fico, was shot multiple times and gravely wounded Wednesday after a political event in an attempted assassination that shocked the small country and reverberated across Europe. The pro-Russian leader, 59, was reported to be fighting for his life after being hit in the stomach. At least four shots were fired outside a cultural center in the town of Handlova, nearly 140 kilometers (85 miles) northeast of the capital, where Fico was meeting with supporters, the government said. A suspect was in custody, the country’s president said in a televised statement. Fico was taken by helicopter to a hospital. The motive

Sen. Bob Menendez ‘put his power up for sale,’ prosecutor claims in bribery trial

NEW YORK — At the opening of U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez’s trial, a prosecutor pointed the finger at him, calling the Democrat corrupt and telling a federal jury in New York on Wednesday that he traded his power in return for bribes of gold bars, cash and a car. Later, Menendez’s lawyer called prosecutors “dead wrong.” Assistant U.S. Attorney Lara Pomerantz said the 70-year-old New Jersey politician delivered favors for three New Jersey businessmen since 2018. And she also put his wife, Nadine Menendez, at the center of the crimes, saying the scheme started in 2018 when he and his wife-to-be had begun dating. Pomerantz said the senator was careful not to send too many written communications involving the bribery scheme and used his wife to communicate. “He was careful not to send too many texts,” she said, adding he had Nadine Menendez do it for him. “He used Nadine as his go between to deliver messages to and from the people paying bribes.” Nadine Menendez is charged in the case, but her trial has been delayed until at least July because of a medical

These seniors are learning Hula to celebrate Hawaiian culture

SAN RAMON, Calif. — “Hula is the language of the heart, and therefore the heartbeat of the Hawaiian people,” says Desiree Elder, a Hula instructor with the Polynesian dance revue, Island Spice. “Many people visit Hawaii,” Elder says, “and they think that Hula is just wiggling around. But Hula is so much more than that.” Elder teaches Hula to all ages, but her most unique class is probably the 55-and-over instruction for mature adults taught at San Ramon-Alcosta Senior and Community Center. “The soft, graceful movements are really fun to do,” says Fiona Waterhouse, one of Elders students. “And the beautiful music which evokes everything Hawaiian.” “This is like a godsend class,” adds another student. Elder says she particularly enjoys teaching seniors because they’re a very engaging group of people. “They want to learn,” she says, “they’re not done with life, they want to learn, they want to exercise.” Many of Elders students agree, Hula dancing gives them an opportunity to move and exercise their bodies and their minds. They often give each other tips on how to learn the dance moves, allowing them to
