Pro-Palestinian protestors remain on UC Merced campus for Board of Regents meeting

MERCED, Calif. (KFSN) — Pro-Palestinian protesters remained on campus at UC Merced to make their voices heard as the UC Board of Regents met on Tuesday. An encampment of demonstrators has been set up at the university since Sunday, adding to the growing list of colleges nationwide protesting in response to the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza. Tuesday marked the first day of a three-day meeting for the UC Board of Regents on campus. The board spent the day discussing investments and how they are planning to maintain funds long term. Funding is a concern for UC Merced students who attended the meeting. “The UC uses our taxes to fund companies that support Israel’s operations. Corporations and billionaires, profiting from hard working students and our families in the US, are also funding this genocide,” said one UC Merced student. On Sunday, a group of students gathered at the top of a hill on campus to protest. “We are asking to end the silence. We want to call for a ceasefire. A recognition of the genocide in Gaza. We want a divestment in the Israeli occupation, reinvestment

Even Mason Miller can’t prevent A’s from losing in 10 innings to Houston

Even a Mason Miller sighting wasn’t enough to prevent the Athletics from losing for the eighth time in the last 10 games. Victor Caratini singled home the winning run against Michael Kelly (2-1) in the 10th inning Tuesday night as the  Houston Astros beat the A’s, 2-1, at Minute Maid Park. Miller, who had taken the mound just once in 11 days, pitched the eighth and ninth innings for the A’s with five strikeouts, but the A’s could not score and fell to 19-25. Houston improved to 17-25, having won the first two games of the series. The A’s squandered an opportunity in the ninth but came up empty, setting the stage for Houston to win in the 10th. Pinch-runner Trey Cabbage opened at second base as the free runner, and went to third on a fly ball to left by Jake Meyers. Caratini followed by bouncing a single up the middle for the winning run. In the top of the ninth, Houston closer Josh Hader (2-3) — working a rare second inning for him — walked Max Schuemann to join free runner Seth Brown

VISALIA, Calif. (KFSN) — A new VA clinic is preparing to open its doors in Tulare County this week. Those services will now be offered at the new clinic in Visalia. “Specialty care services such as optometry, podiatry, physical medicine and rehab, so we have a full physical medical suite, battlefield acupuncture, massage therapy, chiropractic,” explained Jesse Conyers, a Chief Planner with the Department of Veterans Affairs, who has been working behind the scenes since 2016 to make this clinic a reality. He knows the struggles of those who have served. He’s a veteran, too. The building was gutted and remodeled to include new features like an interactive directory, a prosthetics suite, a mental health suite, X-ray

New details revealed in case of Fresno County son accused of murdering mom

Wednesday, May 15, 2024 1:16AM New details are coming to light in the case of a Fresno County man accused of killing his mother. FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) — New details are coming to light in the case of a Fresno County man accused of killing his mother. 30-year-old Jose Juan Mata faces one murder charge after prosecutors say he attacked Maria Elias inside a mobile home south of Fresno in May 2020. On Tuesday, a homicide detective took the stand, telling the judge about the disturbing evidence authorities found. “There was a blade found protruding from her chest on the right side,” Fresno County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Detective Juan Galindo said. Galindo said the blade was still in the victim’s body when a coroner examined her, but the handle was broken off. He testified a household appliance was also used in the crime. “…A small floor fan, and it was – the cord, the extension cord from the fan, was around her neck,” he said. Mata’s defense attorney pushed back, pressing the detective on witness statements not in his report. “He didn’t tell you

Deadline to apply for Fresno EOC’s Guaranteed Income Program is May 15th

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — Time is running out to apply for Fresno EOC’s Guaranteed Income Program. With the deadline on Wednesday, 150 eligible families will have the opportunity to receive $500 a month for a year. The Fresno EOC says it’s received thousands of applications for its Guaranteed Income Program. CEO Emilia Reyes said the money would give relief for families and help them survive. “Fresno County has a 20% poverty rate,” said Reyes. “Our families here are struggling and we need to demonstrate to the state that we need these funds for our families here in the Valley.” Reyes said that number could even be higher, especially with those who are undocumented or homeless. Huron and the 93706 zip code in Southwest Fresno are the two areas chosen for the program. Here’s how families can qualify for the program: If you live in Huron, you must make $35,000 or less annually. If you live in the 93706 zip code in Southwest Fresno, you must earn $30,000 or less. You also have to be over 18 and pregnant or have at least one child five

Blake Snell to make final rehab start before rejoining SF Giants’ rotation

SAN FRANCISCO — As far as rehab starts go, it doesn’t get much better than the four perfect innings Blake Snell threw for Single-A San Jose earlier this week. The reigning National League Cy Young winner will, however, make one more tuneup before rejoining the Giants’ starting rotation. As the Giants play host to the Rockies on Friday, the 31-year-old left-hander will be just up I-80 at Sutter Health Park in Sacramento. “Blake is going to pitch Friday in Sacramento,” manager Bob Melvin confirmed Tuesday. “He’s going to pitch Friday in Sacramento and then he’ll come back with us. That’ll be his last one.” Since signing a two-year, $62 million free-agent deal on March 19, Snell has made only three starts for the Giants, going 0-3 with an 11.57 ERA before straining the adductor muscle in his left groin during a bullpen session earlier this month. In eight turns through Snell’s spot in the rotation, the Giants have gone 1-7, only winning for the first time behind Mason Black on Sunday while Snell mowed through Single-A hitters on the other end of the San Francisco

Jung Hoo Lee has structural damage in shoulder, but SF Giants don’t know next steps yet

SAN FRANCISCO — By the looks of it Tuesday afternoon, Jung Hoo Lee didn’t seem to be a man destined for season-ending surgery. The Giants’ 25-year-old center fielder was all smiles as he walked through the home clubhouse before the second game of their series against the Dodgers. His dislocated left shoulder hung from a gray team-branded T-shirt, free of any supportive sling, while he joked around with some of his teammates. Lee’s upbeat demeanor struck a different tone than the official update released by the club an hour or so later, which confirmed that he had suffered structural damage in his shoulder when he crashed into the center field wall in the first inning of Sunday’s win over the Reds. Whether or not Lee requires surgery will be determined by a meeting with Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles on Thursday, though consultations with the renowned orthopedic surgeon often end on the operating table. Sun shoots out biggest solar flare in nearly a decade, but Earth should be safe this time

By MARCIA DUNN (AP Aerospace Writer) CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — The sun produced its biggest flare in nearly a decade Tuesday, just days after severe solar storms pummeled Earth and created dazzling northern lights in unaccustomed places. “Not done yet!” the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced in an update. It’s the biggest flare of this 11-year solar cycle, which is approaching its peak, according to NOAA. The good news is that Earth should be out of the line of fire this time because the flare erupted on a part of the sun moving away from Earth. NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory captured the bright flash of the X-ray flare. It was the strongest since 2005, rated on the scale for these flares as X8.7. Bryan Brasher at NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center in Boulder, Colorado said it may turn out to have been even stronger when scientists gather data from other sources. It follows nearly a week of flares and mass ejections of coronal plasma that threatened to disrupt power and communications on Earth and in orbit. NASA said the weekend geomagnetic storm caused

Westminster dog show is a study in canine contrasts as top prize awaits

By JENNIFER PELTZ (Associated Press) NEW YORK (AP) — If every dog must have its day, one champion canine is about to have its year. By the end of Tuesday night, one of the more than 2,500 hounds, terriers, spaniels, setters and others that entered this year’s Westminster Kennel Club dog show will be crowned best in show. Will Comet the shih tzu streak to new heights after winning the big American Kennel Club National Championship last year? Or would a wise bet be Sage the miniature poodle or Mercedes the German shepherd, both guided by handlers who have won the big prize before? What about Louis, the Afghan hound whose handler and co-owner says he lives up to his breed’s nickname as “the king of dogs”? And that’s not all: Three more finalists are still to be chosen Tuesday evening before all seven face off in the final round of the United States’ most illustrious dog show. It’s being held in the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, home of the U.S. Open tennis tournament. In an event where all competitors are champions

Police in France search for inmate after prison convoy attack

By Saskya Vandoorne, Julen Chavin and Joshua Berlinger | CNN French authorities launched a manhunt on Tuesday after gunmen ambushed a prison convoy in Normandy to break out an inmate, killing two guards and wounding three others. The violent incident, extremely rare for that part of northern France, took place as the vehicle was transporting a prisoner from court to a nearby prison, French Justice Minister Eric Dupond-Moretti said. Video from the scene showed a black SUV in flames that appeared to have crashed into a prison van near a motorway toll booth, CNN affiliate BFMTV reported. Two hooded individuals could be seen carrying what appeared to be long rifles. Dupond-Moretti told reporters that the incident was the first time a French prison employee had died while working since 1992. He added that one of the guards leaves behind a wife and two children, and the other a spouse who was five months’ pregnant. Dupond-Moretti added that two of those hurt sustained life-threatening injuries. The gunmen are still at large, national police said on X. “Everything, and I mean everything, will be done to find the

Michael Cohen faces cross-examination by Donald Trump’s lawyers

NEW YORK — Donald Trump’s fixer-turned-foe Michael Cohen returned to the witness stand Tuesday, testifying in detail about how the former president was linked to all aspects of the hush money scheme that prosecutors say was an illegal effort to purchase and then bury stories that threatened his 2016 campaign. Trump, the first former U.S. president to go on trial, was joined at the courthouse by an entourage of GOP lawmakers that included House Speaker Mike Johnson and others considered vice presidential contenders for Trump’s 2024 campaign. Their presence was a not-so-subtle show of support meant not just for Trump, but also for voters tuning in to trial coverage and for the jurors deciding Trump’s fate. As proceedings began, Johnson held a news conference outside the courthouse, using his powerful pulpit to attack the U.S. judicial system. It was a remarkable moment in American politics as the person second in line to the presidency sought to turn his political party against the rule of law by declaring the Manhattan criminal trial illegitimate. Michael Cohen faces cross-examination in Trump’s hush money trial “I do have a
