What to know about Trump and RFK Jr.’s “Make America Healthy Again” agenda

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has outlined a number of promises to “Make America Healthy Again” under President-elect Donald Trump , vowing to combat an “epidemic” of chronic diseases that he has described as an “existential” threat to America’s future. All are under the banner of fighting what Kennedy sees as a common thread behind a broad swath of ailments: that Americans have been “mass poisoned by big pharma and big food,” and that federal agencies have failed to stop it. In response, he has also floated a number of specific policy ideas to remake the federal government’s public health institutions.  “[Trump] asked me to end the chronic disease epidemic in this country. And he said, I want to see results, measurable results in the diminishment of chronic disease within two years. And I said, Mr. President, I will do that,” Kennedy said on Nov. 2.  Authority for a MAHA agenda Kennedy’s allies say Trump’s election is also a mandate for their platform of health proposals, which they say delivered key votes for the president-elect. Trump has promised to let Kennedy “go wild” on health issues.

With phase one of a $250 million waterfront development slated for a grand opening in 2026, the Port of Los Angeles Tuesday called on interested parties to help redevelop one of its most iconic buildings just a mile away. The port issued a request for interest, also known as an RFI, for the redevelopment of its Warehouse No. 1, a six-story, nearly 500,000 square feet building offering panoramic views of the L.A. The RFI is intended to inform subsequent steps such as a request for qualifications and request for proposals, which are expected to be released next year. “Redevelopment of the historic Warehouse No. 1 is another major step in the port’s long-term vision to transform the L.A. USC football placed on probation for violating NCAA coaching staff rules

(Lindsey Wasson / Associated Press) Nov. 12, 2024 Updated 11:39 AM PT The USC football program has been put on probation for one year after the NCAA found the Trojans violated rules restricting the number of analysts allowed to be engaged in on- and off-field coaching activities during the 2022 season and spring of 2023. The NCAA found that USC exceeded the allowed number of countable coaches by six during a two-year period. The NCAA also found that USC coach Lincoln Riley was presumed responsible for the program committing the violations. In January 2023, the NCAA changed the rules restricting the number of coaches on a staff and their duties. According to an NCAA news release, Riley “rebutted his presumed responsibility for the violations occurring before the rules change.” Riley will not be suspended as part of the violations. But in addition to being placed on probation, USC was ordered to pay a $50,000 fine. “Since learning of potential violations related to our football program in May 2023, USC has worked cooperatively with the NCAA enforcement staff and with the Committee on Infractions, as we identified

Rainn Wilson and Aasif Mandvi are waiting for ‘Godot’ at Geffen Playhouse

Aasif Mandvi, one of the leads in a new production of “Waiting for Godot” opening Thursday at L.A.’s Geffen Playhouse, is sitting on a couch, recalling the dearth of roles for South Asian actors in 2003, when he played a Taliban minister in Tony Kushner’s “Homebody/Kabul.” Mandvi’s co-star, Rainn Wilson, leans in. “I thought you were Cuban!” Wilson deadpans. Mandvi doesn’t miss a beat. “I’ve told you a million times, I’m not Cuban,” he says with mock exasperation. “You could play Cuban,” Wilson says. “I’ve played Cuban, but I’m not Cuban,” Mandvi says. “You should change your name, you really should,” Wilson persists. “Like, Antonio Mandivosa. You would work nonstop.” Mandvi shakes his head, ribbing Wilson right back. “You’re so white right now,” he says. They both laugh. The two men are in the midst of recounting their early days in theater, when Wilson didn’t make more than $17,000 annually for years and Madvi toured Florida with a production of “Aladdin” for kids so young they occasionally peed their pants during the performance. Construction worker convicted for killing elderly woman at her home

A man was convicted of capital murder last week in connection to the brutal 2019 killing of an elderly woman who previously employed him as a construction worker, prosecutors said. Heber Enoc Diaz, 33 of Pasadena, was hired to work at the Arcadia home of 76-year-old Chyong Jen Tsai in 2019. In March of that year, while employed by Tsai, he committed a burglary at the home, prosecutors say. The next month, he was no longer working there, but he returned to the home to commit another burglary. That’s when he was confronted by Tsai in the house’s garage. He allegedly used a hammer, jab saw and a box cutter to kill the woman on April 9, 2019, authorities said. Her body was found in the house’s yard. Chyong Jen Tsai, and views of her stolen vehicle, are seen in these photos provided by the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department, Temple Station. Tasi’s white 2005 Lexus RX 300 was also stolen that day. Her husband was out of the country at the time of her death. Diaz was arrested on suspicion of the killing 10 days

Review: East West Players returns to Sondheim’s ‘Pacific Overtures’ and delivers a magnificent revival

East West Players has a long history with “Pacific Overtures,” Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman’s 1976 musical about the opening of Japan to international trade by American warships in 1853 and the historical ramifications no one could have predicted. Mako, the company’s founding artistic director, played the Reciter in the musical’s Broadway premiere and directed his own 1978 production at EWP, where he reprised his Tony-nominated performance. Tim Dang, who served as artistic director of EWP for more than 20 years, directed a 1998 revival of “Pacific Overtures” that inaugurated the David Henry Hwang Theater. Dang’s return to EWP to direct another production of this hugely ambitious musical turns out to be one of the best things to have happened in 2024, at least from a theater perspective. The new revival of “Pacific Overtures” may be the most impressive production I’ve seen anywhere all year. It’s also one of the most entertaining. I wasn’t expecting to write such a sentence about an abstract and some might even say abstruse Sondheim musical that has had only one short-lived Broadway revival. Producers are intimidated by its artistic
