Man Fatally Shot at Homeless Encampment in Panorama City Area

A man was fatally shot at a homeless encampment in the Panorama City area, and police Tuesday sought the public’s help to solve the crime. Officers were sent to Orion Avenue and Rayen Street at about 10:50 a.m. Monday, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. “When officers arrived, they found the victim in an encampment on an embankment of the 405 Freeway suffering from multiple gunshot wounds,” an LAPD statement said. The man, in his 30s, was taken to a hospital, where he died. Information on his identity was not immediately available. “No arrests have been made and there is no suspect information at this time,” the police statement said. Anyone with information about the case was urged to call Operations Valley Bureau detectives at 818-374-9550, or 877-LAPD-247. Harvey Weinstein Seeks Expedited Trial of Accuser’s Civil Case

Citing his age, Harvey Weinstein’s attorneys want an expedited trial of the lawsuit filed by the same accuser who helped bring about the disgraced producer’s criminal conviction for a 2013 sexual assault at a Beverly Hills hotel. The plaintiff is identified as Jane Doe No. 1 in the Santa Monica Superior Court lawsuit filed in February 2023, alleging sexual battery, false imprisonment, negligence and intentional infliction of emotional distress. On Nov. 5, Weinstein’s lawyers filed court papers with Judge Elaine W. Mandel asking that his trial begin within 120 days if she grants the motion for a speedy trial. No trial date is currently set. “Even in the absence of a medical diagnosis, Mr. Weinstein would be entitled to trial preference, since it is well established that incarceration shortens life expectancy, and he has already outlived the average life expectancy of a prisoner in the United States,” Weinstein’s lawyers argue in their heavily redacted court papers that note the producer is 72 years old. As the sole defendant in the case, Weinstein has a significant interest in the case because he faces a potential judgment

Robotaxis open for business in Los Angeles

Anyone in Los Angeles will be able to digitally hail a Waymo robotaxi beginning Tuesday, but don’t expect the driverless vehicle to jump onto a freeway. Waymo announced it will begin Waymo One service in Los Angeles County but will limit its vehicles to surface streets, where the startup owned by Google’s parent, Alphabet, has been testing the sensor-laden cars for months with a limited group of passengers. The service can now be accessed by the public 24 hours a day on its app. Los Angeles officials have been skeptical, seeking more safety oversight of the vehicles as future growth looms and unions raise concerns about job losses. But California Gov. Gavin Newsom this year vetoed legislation that would have required driverless car companies to report more data on crashes. “Now is an exciting time to welcome everyone in Los Angeles along for the ride,” Tekedra Mawakana, co-chief executive of Waymo, said in an announcement. “Our service has matured quickly and our riders are embracing the many benefits of fully autonomous driving.” The company estimates that its fleet of more than 700 vehicles completes over

Rams takeaways: Offense needs more from Kyren Williams, defensive line shows sparks

Nov. 12, 2024 6:54 AM PT 1 The Miami Dolphins defeated the Rams 23-15 on Monday night at SoFi Stadium. Here is what we learned from a loss that dropped the Rams’ record to 4-5: 2 The offense could not reach the end zone The Rams failed to score a touchdown for the first time since last season, when they lost 20-3 at Green Bay. But that happened with former backup Brett Rypien playing in place of injured Matthew Stafford. Monday marked the first time the Rams failed to reach the end zone with Stafford under center since a 24-9 loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Oct. 3, 2022. It’s not like the Rams did not have opportunities. Every time they appeared on their way, however, they committed a turnover, gave up a sack or they were called for a penalty. “We’ve got to be able to look at it and we’ve got to consistently figure out what’s the best way to put our guys in the right kinds of spots,” coach Sean McVay said. “And trying to be able to figure out some

‘You can hear it, you can see it, you can feel it’: Gusty winds, cooler temperatures return to Southern California

Gusty winds are back in SoCal after a bit of a break over the weekend.  When describing the wind Tuesday morning in the San Fernando Valley, KTLA 5’s Carlos Herrera stated simply: “You can hear it, you can see it and you can feel it.”  In their area forecast discussion, the National Weather Service stated that “gusty northerly winds” will be felt throughout the region. Those gusts could reach up to 40 miles per hour in some places, the NWS said.  KTLA 5 meteorologist Henry DiCarlo reiterated that wind speeds will likely be highest in Ventura County – where the Mountain Fire is currently burning – and western L.A. County.  Other communities may experience cooler temperatures due to the shifting wind patterns.  Car lands on balcony of Southern California home after wild crash “Often times, we will have strong winds with wind advisories, fire concerns and then we’ll get pockets that are shaded and protected by the winds where we’ll get a freeze advisory,” DiCarlo said. “When the air is still, the cold air has a chance to settle…when you factor in the wind, you

Trump free to use Justice Department to target his enemies. Will he?

WASHINGTON  —  Before he was reelected, President Trump openly threatened to use — or abuse — his power by ordering federal prosecutors to pursue criminal cases against those he deems enemies. There’s little in the law that would stop him. That’s because the Supreme Court has made clear the Constitution gives the president total authority over how to enforce federal law. Since the Watergate scandal of the early 1970s, the Justice Department has sought to separate law enforcement from politics, and keep the White House at a distance. But that separation is a matter of department policy, not the law. “It’s the norm and the custom. It’s embedded in the U.S. attorneys manual,” said Washington lawyer Stuart Gerson, a former acting U.S. attorney general. “But under the ‘unitary executive’ theory, it is not illegal for the president to intervene in individual cases. It’s just a terrible idea.” The late Justice Antonin Scalia popularized the unitary executive theory, dissenting in 1988 when the court upheld the independent counsels that had been created by Congress. Scalia believed the Constitution put all the executive power in the hands

Florida’s Sen. Rubio seen as Trump’s pick for State Department

WASHINGTON —  Marco Rubio, the combative and hawkish Republican senator from Florida, is expected to be President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for secretary of State, multiple media outlets reported Tuesday. Rubio, the son of Cuban immigrants, was once a challenger to and critic of Trump, but has become a staunch defender and campaign surrogate. He was considered as Trump’s running mate, a post that eventually went to Vice President-elect JD Vance. Neither Trump nor Rubio camps commented on the reports. An announcement was expected later Tuesday as Trump quickly pieces together a government. Rubio is a hardliner on issues involving the leftist governments of Cuba and Venezuela, and also on Iran. He’s also a veteran lawmaker with legislative skills that could prove useful to Trump. And with many friends and allies on Capitol Hill, his Senate confirmation should come easily. Rubio would become the first Latino secretary of State and likely highest ranking Latino in the Trump administration. More to Read

Plaschke: Rams are Monday night no-shows in no-touchdown performance against Dolphins

Who’s house? Nobody’s home. The Rams threw a Monday night party that filled SoFi Stadium with celebrities, legends, pop stars … almost everything you need for a nationally televised Hollywood football bash. The only thing missing was them. The stage was set for the Rams to prove their championship legitimacy … yet they didn’t show. The football world was eagerly awaiting a sizzling appearance from one of the NFL’s hottest and most exciting teams … and they took a pass. Handed the struggling Miami Dolphins on a blue-and-gold platter, the Rams fumbled the exchange, dropped the shining opportunity with a loud clang, made a total mess of the joint and staggered away with a 23-15 loss that was as ugly as the score sounded. “It sucks,” said guard Steve Avila. It certainly did. An offense devised by the great Sean McVay and engineered by the hot Matthew Stafford scored exactly zero touchdowns. It was the first time that combination has been kept out of the end zone in more than two years. “Sloppy? Yeah,” said McVay. An offensive line that finally was starting to make

Judge delays ruling on whether to scrap Trump’s conviction in hush money case

NEW YORK (AP) — A judge has postponed a decision on whether to undo President-elect Donald Trump’s hush money conviction as prosecutors consider how to proceed in light of last week’s election and his lawyers argue for dismissal so he can run the country. The postponement announced Tuesday comes at a dramatic and dynamic point in the New York case, which focused on how Trump accounted for payments to a porn actor before the 2016 election and produced a first-ever conviction of a former commander-in-chief. Sentencing had been set for Nov. 26. But Manhattan prosecutors now say they’re reassessing, and they appear open to the possibility that the proceedings can’t go as planned. “These are unprecedented circumstances,” Assistant District Attorney Matthew Colangelo wrote in an email to the court. He said prosecutors need to consider how to balance the “competing interests” of the jury’s verdict and the presidency. Trump lawyer Emil Bove, meanwhile, argued the case must be thrown out altogether “to avoid unconstitutional impediments to President Trump’s ability to govern.” The messages were exchanged over the weekend and released Tuesday, when Judge Juan M.

By Graham Kates Updated on: November 12, 2024 / 10:06 AM EST / CBS News What to expect in Trump’s ongoing legal cases What could happen in Trump’s hush money, election and classified documents cases 03:21 The judge who presided over President-elect Donald Trump’s criminal trial , Juan Merchan, is delaying by a week his ruling in the New York hush money case.  Merchan, who was originally expected to rule Tuesday, must decide whether evidence shown at the president-elect’s trial in the New York hush money case should have been shielded from jurors due to presidential immunity. It’s a ruling that could have profound consequences for the case.  Trump was the first former president ever to be convicted of crimes . On Nov. 5, he also became the first person with a criminal record ever to be elected president.  Trump’s lawyers vowed the day a unanimous jury found him guilty of felonies in May to fight his conviction. They were given an extraordinary opportunity not long after when the Supreme Court ruled former presidents are immune from prosecution for official acts. The decision said evidence

Bay Area voters move right in election, sending clear message on crime and homelessness

SAN FRANCISCO —  For decades, the Bay Area has been celebrated — and sometimes mocked — as a progressive beacon, a proud throwback to hippie-era values with its embrace of love and tolerance. But in the Nov. 5 election, voters across the region made it clear there are limits to their compassion. Motivated by pent-up frustrations with property crime and homelessness — and a sense that San Francisco and Oakland had lost control of city streets — Bay Area voters tacked right in last week’s election, ousting the mayors of both cities and rejecting a handful of left-wing candidates. And in a stunning rebuke to the progressive movement to reform criminal justice that the region once championed, a majority of voters in all nine Bay Area counties voted in favor of Proposition 36, a statewide ballot measure that will impose stricter penalties for repeat theft and crimes involving fentanyl. In San Francisco, Mayor London Breed lost her reelection bid in a race against four high-profile Democrats, two of them fellow moderates. Voters instead chose a political outsider, wealthy philanthropist and Levi’s heir Daniel Lurie, who promised

Netflix says ad-supported plan now has 70 million monthly active users

Netflix said Tuesday that it had reached 70 million monthly active users on its ad-supported plan, two years after launching its cheaper subscription tier that includes commercials. That’s up from May, when the company reported having 40 million monthly users on the ad version. The Los Gatos, Calif., streamer has also been diversifying its content, including increasing its streams of live events, in order to boost its nascent advertising business. Netflix said it had sold out of the in-game inventory for its live NFL Christmas Day games this year, with sponsors that include sports betting company FanDuel and Verizon. The company also said it had sold ads across its scripted programs, including the anticipated second season of the Korean drama “Squid Game.” The company said that more than half of new sign-ups in countries where Netflix offers ads are for the cheaper ad-subscription tier. “There has been continuous momentum over the last two years, but we’re just getting started and can’t wait to see what’s to come,” Amy Reinhard, president of advertising, said in a blog post. Netflix began offering a cheaper ad subscription plan
