Pedestrian dead after being struck by vehicle in Southern California parking lot

The Los Angeles Police Department confirms that one person is dead after being struck by a vehicle in a parking lot in Van Nuys. The incident occurred around 2:05 p.m. in the 6900 block of North Sepulveda Boulevard, which appears to be the address of an apartment building. Authorities say the female driver was pulling out of a parking space outside the building when an object became lodged between the gas pedal and the floorboard, causing her to lose control of the vehicle. Two pedestrians were walking in the parking lot at the time and the driver struck both individuals, dragging one of the victims onto the street before coming to a stop. LAPD confirms the pedestrian who was dragged onto the street died at the scene. The second victim is in hospital with serious injuries but is expected to survive. Bass To Help Lead Mayors Lobbying Federal Leaders for Homelessness Solutions

Mayor Karen Bass is scheduled to be in Washington, D.C. Sunday through Friday to help lead a group of mayors lobbying Biden Administration officials and congressional leaders for solutions addressing homelessness. Bass is making the trip in her role as chair of the U.S. Conference of Mayors Task Force on Homelessness. She will be joined by conference President Hillary Schieve, the mayor of Reno, Nevada. Meetings will be held through Thursday. Bass is set to return to Los Angeles Friday. As part of its agenda, the delegation will lobby to expand veteran eligibility for housing vouchers, lift the cap on project-based vouchers to allow cities to build more affordable housing and urge federal leaders to increase funding for housing choice vouchers. “In order to make tangible change in the greatest crisis facing Los Angeles and hundreds of cities across the country, we know we must continue to work in partnership with leaders across the country,” Bass said in a statement. “We must continue this fight to get the job done.” She added, “Thank you to President (Joe) Biden and his administration for their strong partnership

Mistrial Based on Juror Remark Denied in Raymond Chan Case

A judge Friday denied a bid for a mistrial in the public corruption case of former Los Angeles Deputy Mayor Raymond Chan, who is awaiting sentencing on a dozen federal criminal convictions tied to disgraced ex-Councilman Jose Huizar’s City Hall pay-to-play scheme. The defense motion for a mistrial, or at least an evidentiary hearing, was filed earlier this month based on an overheard comment in which a juror, walking outside court with other panelists after the start of deliberations, commented that the juror hoped the group would arrive at a “quick verdict,” court papers show. In a minute order posted Friday, U.S. District Judge John Walter wrote that a mistrial or evidentiary hearing was not warranted, and pulled a hearing set for next week from his calendar. Specifically, the court found “there was no juror misconduct, and that even if the jurors’ comments could be construed as misconduct, such conduct was not serious and did not prejudice defendant. Defendant received a fair trial.” Chan, 67, of Monterey Park, was found guilty on March 27 of all 12 felony counts he faced: one count of conspiracy

Kawhi Leonard, Clippers struggle again in Game 3 loss to the Mavericks

DALLAS —  In a game that became testy in the fourth quarter, the health of Kawhi Leonard was paramount for the Clippers. Leonard was listed as questionable because of right knee inflammation for Game 3, and though he started Friday night, he rarely looked sharp during the Clippers’ 101-90 loss to the Dallas Mavericks at American Airlines Center. Leonard, who was in and out of the game, departed for the final time with 4:09 left and the Clippers down by 15 points. He played 25 minutes and produced nine points, nine rebounds and four turnovers in a game in which the Clippers trailed by 21 in the fourth quarter. Leonard said his knee “just didn’t respond the way we wanted” after he played in Game 2 on Tuesday night at Crypto.com Arena. “But we’re going to get it right,” Leonard said. “Time will tell, but we’re doing all the right things.” Leonard missed the last eight regular-season games and the first playoff game. He didn’t have any contact during his practices in ramping up to get back. Leonard played 35 minutes in his return but was

Top pick Jared Verse thrilled Rams also picked his Florida State linemate

As he settled in for an introductory news conference Friday, it was difficult to ascertain what new Rams edge rusher Jared Verse was more excited about: His selection the night before with the 19th pick in the NFL draft? Or that moments earlier on Friday, the Rams had traded up to select former Florida State teammate Braden Fiske. Verse had traveled to Southern California from Phoenix and, upon arrival at the Rams’ draft house in Hermosa Beach, he was ushered into a room for a phone call with Fiske after general manager Les Snead selected the defensive tackle with the 39th pick. “Having him be out here with me, and me being out here with him is just out of this world,” Verse said. The 6-foot 4-inch, 254-pound Verse was the first player chosen by the Rams in the first round since 2016. “It’s on me now,” he said. “I’ve got to show it was worth it.” Verse, who had nine sacks in each of his last two college seasons, said he admired accomplished NFL pass rushers such as Jadeveon Clowney, Myles Garrett and Maxx

Fire marks Oceanside Pier’s latest chapter in a troubled history

Firefighters have contained a fire that engulfed the end of the Oceanside Pier, a local landmark that has been destroyed by fire and storms and rebuilt several times in its 136-year history. On Friday, the wood pylons of the 1,954-foot wooden structure were still smoldering from the blaze that ignited Thursday, officials said. No injuries were reported. Oceanside and Strand beaches are still closed to the public as an environmental group cleans up the debris that has washed ashore. The fire also damaged a vacant restaurant that used to be Ruby’s Diner and a snack shop that housed the Brine Box, a seafood eatery. “90% of the pier was saved thanks to a really quick response,” Oceanside city Public Information Officer Terry Gorman Brown said. “A lot of times when piers catch, they’re made of wood — they’re toast.” The structure sits so high above the water that the sea spray couldn’t dampen the flames, she said. “We don’t know [the cause] yet because until [the fire] is fully out we can’t really get out there,” said Brown. The city engineer is assessing the damage

Increased bear sightings prompt alert at San Bernardino campground

An increase in bear sightings at San Bernardino County campgrounds has prompted an alert from park officials, warning visitors to be on the lookout. “We have about 140 campsites plus six large group campsites and they’re basically full every weekend starting now so it’s very popular,” said Ryann Gill, California State Park Superintendent of Silverwood Lake. As the weather warms up, more people will begin heading outdoors to enjoy activities at Silverwood Lake. Following the cold winter months, however, this is also when bears emerge from hibernation and sightings will be on the rise.  “Bear activity isn’t uncommon at Silverwood,” Gill said. “We do have bear activity here, however, for the last three weeks, I would say we’ve had increasing instances of at least one bear entering our campsites.” Recently, however, bear sightings were reported at the New Mesa and Old Mesa campgrounds, areas where Gill said bears are not typically seen. A La Verne resident named Jerry said he visits the area often and was a few campgrounds away when a hungry bear was scavenging for food last weekend. Young bear spotted roaming around

How Tijuana leather designer Kiko Baez ended up working with Latin music’s biggest stars

Many of Kiko Baez’s happiest memories took place at his grandfather’s leather goods manufacturing facility in Tijuana. It’s where he learned to ride a bike and where he would run laps around the machinery and ask employees endless questions about what they do, learning about the ins and outs of the fashion industry. It’s also where he has made custom outfits for some of the biggest names in sports and Latin music. As the founder of luxury streetwear line Baez, the 24-year-old designer has made intricate leather jackets for the likes of Karol G, Daddy Yankee, Maluma and Santa Fe Klan. Baez has also made Mexico-inspired custom boxing shoes for boxing champion Saul “Canelo” Álvarez. Baez says that as a child he would shadow his grandfather at work. Quickly catching on to how the facility functioned, the younger Baez says he was always left with one question: “Why don’t the clothes say our name?” At the time, the factory was a leather manufacturer for several large American brands. This meant the Baez family had no input as to what they made. This arrangement often confused

LA Council Members Seek Financial Disclosure of Commission Appointees

Two Los Angeles City Council members Friday introduced a motion seeking to make it a requirement for board and commission appointees to disclose their personal financial interests prior to their confirmation in an effort to identify potential conflicts. Council members Monica Rodriguez and Paul Krekorian’s motion would instruct the City Attorney’s Office and the Ethics Commission to present an ordinance that would require nominees to boards and commissions to file their financial disclosure statements as a condition of their confirmation by the City Council. They also seek to require nominees to complete city ethics training during their pre-confirmation process. City departments and bureaus are managed by general managers, but some are also headed by an advisory or controlling board of commission. Members of these boards and commissions are typically appointed by the mayor, and confirmed by the City Council. Currently, nominees are required to file a Form 700, a statement of economic interest, and a Form 60, a restricted source financial disclosure statement, during the pre-confirmation process and when assuming office. Nominees are given 21 days to file the forms, however, the documents are not

Britney Spears, Father Settle Dispute Over Legal Fees

Perhaps putting a final touch on her long-running conservatorship case, Britney Spears reached a settlement this week over attorneys fees sought by her father and former conservator, Jamie Spears. No terms of the settlement, which was first reported by the New York Times, were divulged. In a statement to various media outlets Friday, Spears’ attorney Mathew Rosengart said, “As she desired, her freedom now includes that she will no longer need to attend or be involved with court or entangled with legal proceedings in this matter.” Spears had been under a conservatorship for nearly 14 years, but it was dissolved in November 2021. Absent a settlement, the singer and her father could have been forced into a trial that may have rehashed much of the bitter conservatorship, and her allegations that her father was wrongfully enriching himself in his role as conservator. Jamie Spears has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing, insisting all of his decisions in the role were made in his daughter’s best interests.

Person stabbed after argument spills out of L.A. Metro bus, police say

A person was stabbed Friday afternoon after getting into an argument with other passengers on a Los Angeles Metro bus in University Park, authorities said. Police were dispatched to the area of Figueroa Way and Adams Boulevard at around 12:35 p.m. after a reported stabbing, according to Rosario Cervantes, a public information officer for the Los Angeles Police Department. The Los Angeles Fire Department also responded, and the victim was taken to a hospital. No additional information about the victim was immediately available. A suspect was taken into custody shortly after the incident, Cervantes said. According to L.A. Metro spokesperson Patrick Chandler, there was an argument between three people on a bus, and the driver stopped to allow them to get off. “The argument continued on the sidewalk and resulted in an apparent stabbing,” Chandler said in a statement. “The bus is remaining at the scene, since the passengers were witnesses.” The stabbing is the latest in a string of violent incidents involving L.A. County Metropolitan Transportation Authority riders in recent weeks. Earlier this month, a bus driver was stabbed in the chest by a
