Tehama County Public Health offers advice on how to not catch bird flu

RED BLUFF—Tehama County Public Health is offering tips on how to avoid catching bird flu following Gov. Gavin Newsom’s emergency proclamation on Wednesday. As of Thursday morning, there are no H5N1 or bird flu-infected dairy herds or poultry flocks in Tehama County. According to an Associated Press story, U.S. dairy cattle detected the virus for the first time in March. Since then, bird flu has been confirmed in at least 866 herds in 16 states. According to TCPH Executive Director Jayme Bottke, the governor primarily issued this emergency proclamation to open up avenues of additional support for the CDFA. She said this agency is stretched thin with all of its activities in monitoring, testing, and quarantining the increasing number of dairy herds affected by the H5N1 virus in California, which is now extending into southern California from the Central Valley. Newsom’s declaration will allow expedited execution of contracts, removal of limitations on work hours for retired annuitants and other classifications and allow emergency hires. For Tehama County residents, Public Health advises avoiding raw milk consumption from raw milk dairies in Central California with product recalls

Billions of dollars later, California’s homeless crisis persists under Newsom

When asked by pollsters, Californians repeatedly rate homelessness as one of their top concerns — and for good reason. This year’s federal count of Californians who lack housing neared 186,000, by far the most of any state and about 5,000 people higher than the previous year. Gavin Newsom began his governorship six years ago with many promises of decisive action on major issues, among them housing and homelessness. He pledged to appoint a homelessness czar to attack the crisis, and he and the Legislature allocated billions of dollars. A 2023 report by the Legislative Analyst’s Office pegged direct spending by four state agencies since Newsom became governor at $20 billion, but didn’t include spending by other agencies or local governments. The state’s auditor, Grant Parks, cited $24 billion by nine state agencies in a report last spring that castigated Newsom’s Interagency Council on Homelessness for failing to fully track how billions of dollars were spent or determining which programs were effective. As the crisis continued, reporters questioned Newsom about having a czar who could cut through red tape and attack homelessness effectively. Newsom snapped back

CHP to conduct sobriety/driver license checkpoint in Tehama County

RED BLUFF—The CHP’s Red Bluff Office announced its commitment to public safety by implementing a sobriety/driver’s license checkpoint on Saturday at an undisclosed location in Tehama County. The sobriety/driver’s license checkpoint will operate from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. The CHP said it recognizes the critical importance of addressing the issue of driving under the influence, whether caused by drugs, alcohol, or a combination thereof. The law enforcement agency seeks to enhance public safety by educating motorists about the inherent dangers of impaired driving. According to the CHP, the sobriety/driver’s license checkpoint is a strategic initiative to detect, deter, and expeditiously remove DUI and unlicensed drivers from roadways. This mitigates the potential for accidents and safeguards the community. The law enforcement agency claims a study conducted by the California Department of Motor Vehicles, “Estimation of Fatal Crash Rates for Suspended/Revoked and Unlicensed Drivers California,” underscores the elevated risk associated with unlicensed, suspended, and revoked drivers and reveals their increased likelihood of involvement in fatal crashes compared to drivers possessing a valid license. This program was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic

Bad music, cheap concerts, and all that jazz | Paskhaver

The worst thing in the entire world — apart from death, disease, or maiming — is jazz. For reasons I cannot fathom, my parents love it. They were in the Soviet Union when Metallica rocked out to a crowd of 1.6 million. They moved to America at a time when hip-hop didn’t suck. They spent the first quarter of this century knee-deep in some of the best music in history. But for some reason, they ended up loving bands that have an average audience size of four. Go figure. They also love turtlenecks and beanies, but that has to be a coincidence. I’m trying not to hold it against them. I’ve heard it said that telling a good jazz player from a bad jazz player is like tasting wines. You can never tell the difference and it ends up making your head hurt. Nevertheless, I felt I owed it to dear old Dad to go to one of those concerts he liked so much. After all, one has to keep an open mind. Okay, that’s not actually true. When it comes to music, my mind

Philanthropist MacKenzie Scott reveals another $2 billion in donations in 2024

NEW YORK — Billionaire author and philanthropist MacKenzie Scott acknowledged another $2 billion in donations in a blog post on Wednesday, bringing the total she’s given away since 2019 to $19.2 billion. She also revealed new information about how she was managing her wealth, saying she had directed advisors to invest her funds into “mission-aligned ventures.” Most of the grants she made in 2024, she said, went to bolstering economic security and opportunities.. “I’ve asked the investment team helping me manage the assets I’m working to give away to source funds and companies focused on for-profit solutions to these challenges,” Scott wrote. That is in contrast to “withdrawing funds from a bank account, or from a stock portfolio that increases the wealth and influence of leaders who already have it.” FILE – Billionaire philanthropist MacKenzie Scott arrives at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party, March 4, 2018, in Beverly Hills, Calif. Clovis teacher bringing students together through food

Saturday, December 21, 2024 12:26AM A local English teacher is giving her students a delicious assignment, leading to a lesson on various cultures. CLOVIS, Calif. (KFSN) — A local English teacher is giving her students a delicious assignment, leading to a lesson on various cultures. For 10 years, Carol Vande Kerkhoff has taught English at Clovis East High School and, for the last couple of years, has taught an innovative and delicious way of helping students grow as writers. “I just want them to grow a little bit more as writers than when I first got them in August,” explained Mrs. Vande. Every one of these students showed up to Carol’s classroom at Clovis East High School on Thursday morning with their favorite dish as part of a much larger writing assignment. “I adopted this assignment where they choose a recipe that is important to them and their family and they have to write an essay about it,” said Mrs. Vande. Mrs. Vande says the prompt allows students to dig deep into their writing. “They end up telling me personal vignettes that are very meaningful

California regulators approve PG&E’s 6th rate hike of 2024

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KFSN) — Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) rates will once again be going up. The California Public Utilities Commission voted Thursday to approve two new hikes. The approval marks the fifth and sixth rate increases for the utility in 2024. PG&E says the hikes will be used to help fund vegetation management and extend the operation of the Diablo Canyon Power Plant in San Luis Obispo County. The latest price increase will be rolled out on customers’ bills across a 12-month period starting in 2026. According to The Utility Reform Network, also known as TURN, PG&E Customers are already paying an average of $50 more than at the beginning of the year. “I can’t even afford to buy Christmas presents this year or put up Christmas lights because the rates are so extreme. I can’t even afford PG&E,” said Don King with the ‘Stop PG&E’ group. The exact increase you’ll see on your bill is unclear at this time, but customers can expect to pay more through 2026. Dozens who face climbing electricity costs attended the meeting in hopes the commission will

Bird flu state of emergency could mean more resources locally as virus continues to spread

TULARE COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) — Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency this week months after the bird flu began spreading in the Central Valley. It’s a move Dr. Crystal Heath says was overdue. She’s a veterinarian and the executive director of animal advocacy non-profit, Our Honor. “I’m surprised that it didn’t happen sooner. I mean, we’ve lost 50% of the laying flocks, and it has affected more than 50% of California dairy herds. I’m surprised it took Gavin Newsom this long to act,” Dr. Heath. The governor’s office was unavailable for an interview Thursday, but said a news conference will be held Friday to answer questions. A previous press release said the emergency declaration will help streamline and expedite the state’s response. Anja Raudabaugh, the CEO of Western United Dairies says the resources needed include personal protective equipment, testing sites, education, and outreach. Also, more research on how the virus spreads. “There are a number of suspects that scientists think may be happening, but we don’t know how it’s spreading. The wind, the fog, the rain, dust,” explained Raudabaugh. “These are culprits that

Dine and Dish: Smash Bros Bistro in northeast Fresno

Friday, December 20, 2024 2:38AM The Smash Bros pride themselves on making hand-crafted meals made with locally sourced ingredients. FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — The flavors at a Fresno bistro never fall flat. Burgers that hang over the bottom bun have been a smashing success at Smash Bros Bistro on Bullard and Fresno in northeast Fresno. What’s up with the name though? “I guess ’cause we were smashing on our days off last year. We had other jobs at other restaurants. We started doing these smash burgers,” explained co-owner Matt Simons. “I think there’s more flavor in a smash burger because you end up getting that color. It’s called the Maillard reaction.” “We don’t smash it completely all the way. So, it’s not just a meat crisp. It does have a skirt but the meat still has texture, so a little bit of thickness to it,” added co-owner Jonny Aviles. “And then we do shaved onions, a heavy amount of them.” Folks can’t get enough of their Brussel sprouts. “We just chuck’em right in the fryer and then pull them out. And then we have our

Grizzlies hammer Warriors as losing skid continues in Dennis Schroder’s debut

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Dennis Schroder got traded from a team that’s trying to lose to one failing to put the winning ways of their early-season halcyon days back in the bottle. If they play like they did on Thursday, the Warriors’ bottle is shattered. The 51-point margin of defeat is tied for the fourth-biggest blowout loss in franchise history. After starting 12-3 this season, the Warriors have now lost nine of their past 11 games, sliding squarely into play-in territory. They’re “reeling,” head coach Steve Kerr said. Their latest loss was a 144-93 atrocity in which the Grizzlies completely outclassed them from start to finish. The Warriors (14-12) waved the white flag halfway through the third quarter after they fell behind by 46. “I don’t like the ‘panic’ word,” Steph Curry said postgame. “I like: accept where you’re at and buck up, try to figure out how to change the momentum of the season. ‘Panic’ kind of means you don’t have an answer. I think we do have answers. Obviously it’s just a sense of urgency.” The brutal blowout was a tough welcome for Schroder

Warriors shake up starters once again for Dennis Schroder’s debut

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Warriors got an early Christmas present and aren’t waiting to unwrap it. The Warriors inserted Dennis Schroder into their starting lineup days after acquiring him from the Brooklyn Nets. They could have brought the lead guard off the bench and gradually introduced him to lineup configurations, but are rather committing to him right away. “We’re all in,” Warriors head coach Steve Kerr said. “We believe in Dennis, he’s happy to be here, and we’re excited about the partnership. Now it’s time to get to work.” Schroder started Thursday night’s game alongside Steph Curry, Andrew Wiggins, Draymond Green and Kevon Looney. It’s the 15th different starting lineup the Warriors have used this season. Kerr has been constantly searching for the right lineup combinations since De’Anthony Melton — packaged in the deal for Schroder — went down with a season-ending knee injury. When the trade went down, Kerr called Schroder to joke that he’s kicked his ass on three separate continents and told him he’d start with Curry. The Warriors expect Schroder to play both with Curry and as the lead guard on
