SDG&E warns rural residents of potential power shutoffs

San Diego Gas & Electric officials have notified 24,700 customers living in backcountry areas that they may lose power in the coming days because Santa Ana winds are expected to blow through the area, which may result in elevated risk of fire. Moderate-strength Santa Ana winds are expected to arrive Tuesday night and last until Thursday evening, leading the National Weather Service to issue red flag warnings for San Diego County valleys and mountains through Friday morning. The red flag warning is also in effect for inland and coastal Orange County. SDG&E officials say that as early as Wednesday morning, backcountry areas may be subject to Public Safety Power Shutoffs — a practice in which investor-owned utilities in California cut off electricity from specific circuits as a precautionary measure to avoid the chance of power lines falling in high winds and igniting a wildfire. The utility started notifying customers most at risk of losing power on Monday via phone, text messages and email. SDG&E officials say those customers should be prepared to be without power through Friday and added that crews “will work to restore

DUI driver who killed woman and 4-year-old girl in crash sentenced

A man who drove under the influence, fled from police and caused the deaths of a woman and her 4-year-old daughter in a North County freeway crash was sentenced Tuesday to 12 years in state prison. Erick Arambula, 25, pleaded guilty earlier this year to charges of DUI and evading authorities for the crash that killed 29-year-old Courteney Taylor and her daughter Amaya Taylor on April 23, 2023. Prosecutors say Arambula fled from state Fish and Wildlife officers on Old Highway 395 in Fallbrook just before the crash, which happened around 3:15 p.m. Shortly after police terminated the high-speed pursuit, Arambula’s pickup veered off Old Highway 395 and onto the southbound lanes of Interstate 15, where it crashed head-on into Taylor’s car, prosecutors said. Both victims died at the scene. A GoFundMe page created last year by Taylor’s family read, “Everyone who has ever met Courteney has known her as a living angel. Amaya was our family’s guiding light.”

Baby hit by car in Valley Center dies of injuries

A 1-year-old child who was hit by a car on a Valley Center street on Monday morning suffered fatal injuries in the collision, the California Highway Patrol said Tuesday. The incident was reported shortly before 8:30 a.m. on Morningstar Road, which is on the Rincon reservation. According to the CHP, the child died as he or she was airlifted to a hospital. The CHP did not say if the child who died was a boy or a girl. A CHP statement said the driver who struck the child was a man, and alcohol and/or drugs were not a factor in the crash. On Monday, a sheriff’s official said that the driver of the vehicle did not stop after hitting the toddler on the roadway. A vehicle believed to have been involved in the collision was located on state Route 76 near Pauma Valley Drive, about 10 miles away, the official said. No other information about the driver was released, and the CHP statement did not mention the driver leaving the scene of the collision. CHP investigators asked anyone with information or video of the incident

Red Flag Warning issued for San Diego County valleys and mountains

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A second round of stronger Santa Ana winds will develop midweek and elevate fire danger across Southern California. A Fire Weather Watch was previously issued for San Diego County valleys and mountain communities including El Cajon, Escondido, Ramona and Julian for Wednesday and Thursday. As of Tuesday afternoon, the county was upgraded to a Red Flag Warning, meaning that critical fire weather conditions are either currently happening or on the horizon. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior. The Red Flag Warning is in effect from 3 p.m. Wednesday to 7 p.m. Thursday. Northeast winds 15 to 25 miles per hour with gusts up to 50 miles per hour are expected in these areas for Wednesday evening through Thursday afternoon. Strongest winds will be in the eastern portions of the valleys and coastal mountain slopes. Relative humidity could drop to as low as 11% during this time frame, which means any fire that spark are likely to spread rapidly. When will presidential general election results be announced? Missing pieces: How to cope when dementia changes a loved one’s personality

By Louisa Kamps For The New York Times Susan Hirsch was visiting her father in the hospital where he was recuperating after a fall and was shocked to find him — long devoted to her mother — flirting with a nurse as if he were “17 and in the Navy again,” she said. Hirsch, a 67-year-old memory care educator from Palmyra, Pa., scolded her father. But the admonishment only enraged the 93-year-old man; she recalled him saying, “in not nice words,” to get out of his room as she scuttled away. More than 11 million adults in the United States are caring for people diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. In addition to memory loss, most people with dementia will experience mood and behavior changes including aggression, apathy, disorientation, depression, wandering, impulsivity and delusions. Many caregivers describe mood and personality changes as the most upsetting symptoms. While antipsychotic and sedative medications are often used to manage dementia-related mood issues, they have limited efficacy. To get on top of — and feel less toppled by — mood changes, it’s helpful for caregivers to remember

All the News That’s Fit: Lively livers, picky eaters and stretchy skin

For The San Diego Union-Tribune Liver and let’s go Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis, or MASH, is a kind of chronic liver inflammation and scarring caused by excessive fat cells in the organ. It is quite common — approximately 22 million Americans have it. Untreated, it can progress to liver cancer and organ failure. Like diabetes, intensive lifestyle and diet interventions are the first line of treatment. A new study confirms that diet and exercise not only improve liver health but actually accelerate recovery. In one study, patients with MASH underwent a rigorous regimen of exercise and a restricted diet. Over 10 months, they lost 13 to 22 pounds, compared with 0 to 9 pounds for a control group, and increased muscle mass. Various imaging and diagnostic technologies showed improved cardiovascular health, insulin management and reversed damage in the liver. In a U.K. study, scientists polled parents of identical and fraternal twins about their eating habits at 16 months, then at 3, 5, 7 and 13 years old. Fraternal twins were more likely

Want to cut your dementia risk? Keep your blood pressure in check.

By Richard Sima The Washington Post For a healthy brain as we age, we need healthy blood pressure. However, nearly half of American adults have hypertension, which is one of the most common — and preventable — risk factors for developing dementia decades later, research shows. Hypertension, or chronically high blood pressure, is a double whammy for the brain — making it harder for oxygen and nutrients to get into the brain and more difficult for the brain to get rid of metabolic waste products. Abnormally high blood pressure can damage the small blood vessels in the brain, causing brain injury and atrophy, and driving neuroinflammation. When people have hypertension, especially in midlife, “they start losing blood flow to the brain, they start having impacts on the vasculature in the brain,” said Silvia Fossati, an associate professor of neural sciences and the interim director of the Alzheimer’s Center at Temple University School of Medicine. “And this is parallel and additive with the Alzheimer’s pathology.” Hypertension is a risk factor for all-cause dementia as well as Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia. Compared with

Is it COVID or the flu? New tests can check for both

By Dani Blum The New York Times Yet again this winter, millions of Americans will wonder if a nagging cough or body aches is a sign they’re coming down with COVID-19 or the flu. This time, they’ll have an expanded array of tools to get an answer without leaving the house. There are now nine at-home tests that can detect the coronavirus and influenza at the same time. Many of the tests, which can be sold over the counter, were just approved in the last six months. “It’s really a big shift in what’s available,” said Dr. Gregory Martin, a professor at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta. The Food and Drug Administration approved most of the COVID-and-flu combination tests under emergency protocols in 2023 and 2024. Earlier this month, the agency also authorized the first of these combination tests, made by the health care equipment company Healgen, under its traditional, more rigorous approval process. The combination tests look and work a lot like traditional at-home COVID tests: They’re easy to use and fast, often delivering results within 15 minutes. Most are only slightly

‘I needed to make sure I voted’: San Diego County heads to the polls as presidential election wraps up

By the time the polls open on the final day of the presidential election, nearly a million San Diego County residents will have already voted, and thousands more will fan out to vote centers, post offices and ballot boxes Tuesday to cast votes for president, Senate and dozens of ballot measures and local offices. In addition to the highest-profile race, local voters will also be deciding the fate of 10 statewide ballot measures, a countywide half-cent transportation sales tax increase and a slew of legislative races and local measures, depending on where they live. More than 200 vote centers across the county are open until 8 p.m., including six so-called super centers equipped with extra check-in stations, voting booths and poll workers. Voters can also drop their ballots in the mail or in one of more than 150 official drop boxes by 8 p.m. Tuesday. Voting by mail remains the overwhelming choice for San Diego County voters. County election officials had already received more than 840,000 mail-in ballots by Monday morning, and more than 48,000 voters had voted in person. And by the time every

America reaches Election Day and a stark choice between Trump and Harris

By Zeke Miller, Michelle L. Price and Will Weissert, Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — A presidential campaign marked by upheaval and rancor approached its finale on Election Day as Americans decided whether to send Donald Trump back to the White House or elevate Kamala Harris to the Oval Office. Polls opened across the nation Tuesday morning as voters faced a stark choice between two candidates who have offered drastically different temperaments and visions for the world’s largest economy and dominant military power. Harris, the Democratic vice president, stands to be the first female president if elected. She has promised to work across the aisle to tackle economic worries and other issues without radically departing from the course set by President Joe Biden. Trump, the Republican former president, has vowed to replace thousands of federal workers with loyalists, impose sweeping tariffs on allies and foes alike, and stage the largest deportation operation in U.S. history. US voters deciding dozens of ballot measures affecting life, death, taxes and more

By David A. Lieb, Associated Press While electing officials to make and enforce laws, voters in dozens of states are also deciding on more than 140 ballot proposals affecting the way people legally live, work and die. As 10 states consider measures related to abortion or reproductive rights on Tuesday’s ballots, about a half-dozen states are weighing the legalization of marijuana for either recreational or medical use. About two dozen measures are focused on future elections, including several specifically barring noncitizens voting. Other state measures affect wages, taxes, housing and education. Many of the ballot measures were initiated by citizen petitions that sidestep state legislatures, though others were placed before voters by lawmakers. Marijuana legalization Voters in Florida, North Dakota and South Dakota are deciding whether to legalize recreational marijuana for adults. The election marks the third vote on the issue in both North Dakota and South Dakota. In Nebraska, voters are considering a pair of measures that would legalize medical marijuana and regulate the industry.
