What we learned in the final Emerson College swing state polls

(NEXSTAR) – On the eve of the presidential election, the final batch of swing state polling from Emerson College and The Hill shows no clear favorite to claim victory in the Electoral College on Tuesday. Polling released Monday shows small edges in the seven most closely watched states, with neither candidate holding a lead outside the margin of error. The Hill reports that Trump holds an edge in Arizona, Georgia, North Carolina and Pennsylvania, while Harris has the edge in Michigan, based on surveys conducted between Oct. 30 and Nov. 2. The candidates were tied in polling of Nevada and Wisconsin. To break down what the numbers mean, Spencer Kimball, executive director of Emerson College Polling, and a panel of Nexstar journalists from the swing states will join Chip Brewster Monday to discuss their expectations for the final vote. GOP centers election concerns on noncitizen voting, but it’s rare

Chris Johnson | (TNS) CQ-Roll Call WASHINGTON — Donald Trump and his Republican allies have raised alarm that noncitizens who vote could unlawfully tilt the 2024 presidential election, but lawsuits over state voter registrations have shown the potential effect on the top of the ticket appears comparatively small. Lawsuits from Republican groups in two swing states where a margin of victory could be close, Nevada and Arizona, allege thousands of names on voter rolls are either noncitizens or have not been properly vetted. There are signs that the lawsuits, filed in Nevada by the Republican National Committee and in Arizona by a legal group led by former Trump adviser Stephen Miller, could be used as fodder to question the results in those states and challenge the outcome of the election. Members of Congress have raised the issue, and election officials in some states have sought to take noncitizens off the voter rolls. Karoline Leavitt, national press secretary for the Trump campaign, said the Biden administration’s policies have allowed more illegal immigration, and “Democrats are pushing for non-citizens to vote and influence the future of our country.” But studies from right-leaning think tanks are among reviews that have cast doubt on how often those

Fighting for a cure: Thousands of people walk to raise awareness and money for type 1 diabetes research

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Fox 5/KUSI has two warriors who live with type 1 diabetes, an auto immune disease with no cure: news anchor Andrew Luria and news/weather anchor Danica McAdam. Type 1 diabetes requires daily insulin injections or doses via an insulin pump to manage, otherwise the condition is life-threatening. The good news is type 1 diabetes is manageable with insulin and blood sugar monitoring therapies. One-point-45 million people live with type 1 diabetes. San Diego to honor Bill Walton with memorial blood drive On Sunday, during November’s Diabetes Awareness Month, over 1,500 San Diegans walked to raise money to find a cure at the Breakthrough T1D Walk at Liberty Station. Here’s when the Balboa Park Botanical Building is set to reopen

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The years-long, $21 million renovation of Balboa Park’s crown jewel Botanical Building is coming to its close. The iconic greenhouse has been shuttered since 2022, when city crews broke ground on the project to update the building and its surrounding gardens. The two-phase project is the most extensive refurbishment to the more than century-old conservatory since the 1950s. Over the last two years, Balboa Park visitors have seen the Botanical Building through each phase of the exhaustive construction work — from being stripped down to its steel bones to remove decaying parts of its structure to the restoration of the building’s original cupola. Balboa Park could see return of Starlight Bowl in renewed renovation push While the inside has been roped off to the public, city officials have given several sneak peeks along the way, showing how the new and improved conservatory was taking shape. And early next month, parkgoers will finally be able to visit in person. “We are inching closer to the reopening of the #BalboaPark Botanical Building! The structure is still closed to the public as staff add the

North County’s 74th Assembly District race offers a rematch, with a slight twist

In one of San Diego County’s tightest Assembly races this fall, voters in the 74th Assembly district might feel a sense of déjà vu as Assemblymember Laurie Davies goes head-to-head once again against San Clemente Councilmember Chris Duncan. The two faced off in 2022, with Davies, R-Laguna Niguel, winning by a 5.2% margin. Then, there were more registered Democratic voters than Republicans in the district. The complete voter guide This story is part of a series breaking down races around San Diego County, covering everything from Congress to school boards. For more, check out our comprehensive voter guide here. This time, Republicans outnumber Democrats in the district. And both parties are gunning to secure control of this key legislative seat that leans Republican numbers-wise but has pushed forward more progressive measures. In 2022, for example, nearly 58% of voters in AD-74 backed Proposition 1, enshrining protections for abortion in the state constitution. Davies and Duncan are split on several key issues, one of them being raising the minimum wage. Before California voters this election is a proposition to increase the state’s minimum wage to $18

Hike of the week: Tecolote Canyon makes for a simple weekday hike in the city

Tecolote Canyon offers creeks and shady oak canopies in the heart of Clairemont. With about 6.5 miles of trails, Tecolote Canyon Natural Park & Nature Center is located between the communities of Bay Park, Linda Vista and Clairemont. The canyon’s proximity to neighborhoods and busy roads may be a downside to this hiking area for some, but it is accessible, especially for a weekday hike. The preserve is named “tecolote” — which comes from the Indigenous Nahuatl language and means “owl” — since the bird is one of several that roam this canyon. The nearly 3-mile easy loop travels through a section near the northern end of the canyon, starting at a trailhead behind Mt. Etna Park. Along the way, hikers will pass by a few creeks — some dry, others with water — and cross over wooden bridges. But note that the final section of the hike follows a sidewalk and a busy road, so this one may not be desirable for all hikers. Trunk sewer pipes are are located underground in Tecolote Canyon, so hikers will see some sewage infrastructure and may smell

They also urged the public to be patient, saying

San Diegans head to polls ahead of Election Day. What to know if you still need to vote

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — With two more days to get in their votes, San Diego County voters continued to make their way to voting centers and the Registrar’s Office on Sunday to cast their votes ahead of Election Day. “With all the mail-in ballots these days, I like to drop it off at the Registrar here. It fees a little more safe, more secure,” said Scott Nielsen.  San Diego County sees high voter turnout ahead of 2024 election Others like to wait until Election Day to cast their vote. “I wait until Tuesday after work. I get off around 4 p.m. and head to my precinct,” said Jose Nunez.  Voters that haven’t yet registered to vote are able to do so in person quickly and easily as well.  “I still needed to complete my registration as I recently moved back to San Diego from out of state. Lower speed limits, more roundabouts, wider crosswalks: How San Diego hopes to finally reduce traffic deaths

Big changes like lower speed limits and rebuilt intersections are coming to neighborhoods across San Diego as city officials ramp up efforts to boost safety and prevent crashes that kill pedestrians and cyclists. City officials plan to begin reducing speed limits next year in pedestrian-heavy business districts and areas designated as safety corridors because they are used by many walkers, cyclists or vulnerable people like seniors. The city is also planning hundreds of new roundabouts, refuge islands, flashing beacons, countdown timers, widened crosswalks and pedestrian-friendly “delayed green” stoplights. A new “quick build” team will be tasked with installing safety and traffic-calming features at intersections in the immediate aftermath of any future deaths or major crashes there. And city officials will launch a new analysis of fatal crashes to identify traits common to the intersections where they happen and to determine what kinds of changes can be made. The new efforts come as city officials have been forced to concede they won’t meet the main goal of their current citywide Vision Zero campaign, which they launched in 2015 to reduce traffic fatalities to zero within a

Nearly 6 years after young man’s death in jail, county agrees to pay $5M just before trial

San Diego County will pay nearly $5 million to the mother of a young man who died almost six years ago in a San Diego jail. Michael Wilson already suffered from congestive heart failure when he was booked into the downtown Central Jail on Feb. 5, 2019, but he never was given the prescription medications he relied on to stay alive. He died nine days later at 32 years old. “Without medication, his lungs would fill with fluids, causing a medical emergency,” his mother’s lawsuit said. The lawsuit was filed by Phyllis Jackson in federal court a year after Wilson’s death. It was settled on Oct. 23, less than three weeks before the trial was scheduled to start. Eugene Iredale, one of the attorneys representing Wilson’s mother, said the case stretched on far longer than it should have. “We were willing to resolve the case, had we been able to, much earlier,” Iredale said. “Had we done that at an earlier time, it would have been for a lower figure.” The settlement comes four months after the county agreed to pay $15 million to the

Trump talks about reporters being shot and says he shouldn’t have left White House after 2020 loss

By JILL COLVIN, DARLENE SUPERVILLE, BILL BARROW and JONATHAN J. COOPER, Associated Press LITITZ, Pa. (AP) — Donald Trump gave a profane and conspiracy-laden speech two days before the presidential election, talking about reporters being shot and suggesting he “shouldn’t have left” the White House after his 2020 loss to Democrat Joe Biden. In remarks Sunday that bore no resemblance to his standard speech in the campaign’s closing stretch, the former president repeatedly cast doubt on the integrity of the vote and resurrected old grievances about being prosecuted after trying to overturn his defeat four years ago. Trump intensified his verbal attacks against a “grossly incompetent” national leadership and the American media, steering his rally in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, at one point on to the topic of violence against members of the press. The GOP nominee for the White House noted the ballistic glass placed in front of him at events after a gunman’s assassination attempt in July at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Trump talked about places where he saw openings in that protection. “I have this piece of glass here,” he said. “But all we have really over here is the fake news. And to

CARLSBAD, Calif. Harris urges voters not to be fooled by Trump’s claims electoral system is rigged

By DARLENE SUPERVILLE and BILL BARROW, Associated Press DETROIT (AP) — On the last Sunday before Election Day, Democrat Kamala Harris said God offers a “divine plan strong enough to heal division” and urged voters not to be fooled by Donald Trump’s disparagement of the electoral system that he falsely claims is rigged against him. The vice president offered the latest iteration of her closing argument in Michigan, where she began her day at the pulpit of a Black church in Detroit. From there, she embarked on multiple additional stops in the state, part of the Democratic “blue wall” in the Midwest considered her smoothest potential path to an Electoral College majority. Harris avoided direct mention of Trump during her 11-minute talk at Greater Emmanuel Institutional Church of God in Christ. But her comments nonetheless served as a clear juxtaposition with the former president and Republican nominee. According to the American Cancer Society, colorectal cancers mostly start as a growth – known as a polyp – on the inner lining of the colon or rectum. “Polyps are quite common, especially as you get older. Most polyps are benign, or noncancerous,” the ACS explains. The type of polyp can impact the odds
