Mexican authorities search for missing San Diego resident, two Australian brothers

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A U.S. citizen San Diego resident and two Australian brothers went missing last weekend during a surfing trip south of Ensenada, Mexican officials said. Authorities became aware of the three missing persons through publications made on social networks, the Attorney General’s Office of the State of Baja California said in a press release Thursday. “It should be noted that, although the official report was made 48 hours after the disappearance, the FGE acted immediately upon learning of the facts through publications on digital platforms,” the release read. During a press conference Thursday, State Attorney General María Elena Andrade said they are “making every effort” and “have made progress in the investigation.” Woman’s vehicle hit by ‘unknown projectile’ while driving on highway Three Mexican nationals are under investigation “to obtain information that will allow them to locate the missing persons,” according to prosecutors. 2 men detained after several fliers with religious texts taped to Northwest Fresno places of worship

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — Two men have been detained after several fliers containing opinions on religious views were posted on two Northwest Fresno places of worship. Fresno Police were called to the Temple Beth Israel at 4:18 p.m. for a report of two men shouting and placing fliers on the temple. Officers in the area quickly made their way to the St. Anthony’s of Padua on Bullard and Maroa avenues, where the men had moved on. When Action News crews arrived on scene, multiple police vehicles were surrounding a van parked alongside the church. “We’re looking at all the laws that may have been violated,” said Lt. Marcus Gray II with the Fresno Police Department. “This is a private campus. Things concerning being on that campus, everything is going to be in play when we’re looking at this investigation.” Spray paint on the side of the van spelled out “repent or perish,” the same phrase on the fliers posted at the Jewish temple and St. Anthony’s of Padua. Investigators say the men were detained but so far, no charges have been filed. Fresno Animal Control

Fresno State is advancing black student success thanks to new funding

Friday, May 3, 2024 2:04AM After receiving more than $4 million from the California State University, Fresno State is set to expand the Black Student Success Initiative’s outreach. FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — California State University has allocated over $4.6 million to advance and elevate black students across its 23 campuses. “One of the messages that came through very clearly is that they did not want this action plan to be another report on the shelf, and we have taken that charge very seriously,” says California State University Deputy Vice Chancellor of Academic and Student Affairs Dilcie Perez. She adds that the University system is taking action to help advance black student success across all 23 universities by allocating over $4.6 million. In 2023, each campus submitted individual action plans detailing how they would use the funds to make a difference. “Each university identified 1 to 3 items that would help them move forward in these efforts, and listed on our website are each of the action items that every university committed to,” said Perez. Dine and Dish: North Fork BBQ in North Fork

MADERA COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) — North Fork BBQ may be located in a small town in Madera County, but it draws customers from all over. The setting is perfect for an outdoor meal. Nine miles from Bass Lake, you come across a sight for hungry eyes on Road 222. “Our restaurantis lodgedon the side of a mountain, and so we have a stream that goes right under the restaurant,” said owner Trevor Seward. He shared his approach to BBQ, “With the family being from the south, the pulled pork influences, the Alabama white sauce influences. So when we made the restaurant, we said, let’s not just stick to one genre. Let’s be a hybrid of BBQ.” Locals and area workers pack the place because the staff goes big on everything they do, like the tri-tip sandwiches. “It just became muscle memory,” explains Tony Harris in the kitchen. “Like the look of it, how much is going to fit on the bun, what looks good on the bun as far as the mound goes. Height and presentation is always a big key.” Towering sandwiches match the

Oakland A’s ace Paul Blackburn had his high school jersey retired. Then the rival’s pitcher stole the show.

BRENTWOOD – Liberty coach Andrew Lonsdale seemed mildly annoyed by the commotion Oakland A’s pitcher Paul Blackburn caused at Thursday’s Bay Valley Athletic League game.  Yes, Liberty graciously switched up the home-and-away two-game series with crosstown rival Heritage to allow them to honor their famous alum on his day off. And Lonsdale and the Lions applauded as Blackburn posed for photos with family and friends.  Oakland A’s pitcher Paul Blackburn holds a sign commemorating his jersey number being retired during a pre-game ceremony at Heritage High School in Brentwood, Calif., on Thursday, May 2, 2024. (Jose Carlos Fajardo/Bay Area News Group)  But through all the pomp and circumstance, the Lions just wanted to play ball.  “We were here to play baseball,” Lonsdale said. “That’s what we were focused on.” And on the day devoted to the greatest pitcher in Patriots history, it was Liberty lefthander David Roberts who stole the show and spoiled Blackburn homecoming in a 5-2 Lions victory. The 220-pound Arizona State commit used his 91 MPH fastball and a wicked curve to strike out 11 and allow just four hits in a

One dead, one injured in two-vehicle crash on Highway 25

SANTA CLARA COUNTY — A woman was killed and a man was injured when a big rig and a car collided Monday afternoon on State Route 25 in southern Santa Clara County, according to authorities. The crash happened around 12:40 p.m. at Bloomfield Avenue, said California Highway Patrol Officer Alfredo Uribe. A 2016 Freightliner tractor-trailer combination was traveling northbound on State Route 25 at 40 mph when a Hyundai Elantra made a left turn onto the highway from westbound Bloomfield Avenue, Uribe said. The big rig then collided with the car. The driver of the Hyundai suffered fatal injuries in the crash, Uribe said. The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office will release her identity once it is confirmed and her next of kin is identified. Uribe said the collision left the driver of the big rig with minor injuries to his left hand. Neither drugs nor alcohol appeared to play a role in the crash, Uribe said. Dua Lipa is a pop star with no lore on ‘Radical Optimism’

Dua Lipa’s “Radical Optimism” has a hilarious album cover, two songs about illusionists and what may end up the year’s most succulent bass playing. What it doesn’t have is the kind of detailed celebrity meta-narrative that’s come to define — and to propel — the superstar pop LP in music’s parasocial age. The 28-year-old London-born singer might disagree: On the cusp of her Saturn return, Lipa has been talking up her third studio album as a meditation on hard-won emotional maturity à la Ariana Grande’s “Eternal Sunshine” or Kacey Musgraves’ “Deeper Well.” “Radical optimism in the way that I see it,” she told Zane Lowe, “is this idea of rolling with the punches.” The LP’s cover shows her bobbing in the sea dangerously close to a shark’s fin, and I guess the shark represents the punches? Yet because Lipa’s lyrics are very bad — “If these walls could talk, they’d tell us to break up,” she sings at one point — this concept doesn’t really come together. And, besides, a quest for emotional maturity really misses the whole point of Dua Lipa, which is being

California governor declares May ‘Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month’

May is officially Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in the state of California, following a proclamation by Governor Gavin Newsom on Tuesday. “With more than six million Californians of Asian or Pacific Islander descent, California is home to dynamic AAPI communities that are an invaluable part of our state and nation,” Newsom said in the proclamation. He added, “Since our state’s founding, AAPIs have been instrumental in writing the California story and building our state as we know it.” According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are nearly 6.1 million people of Asian descent in California and nearly 160,000 people who identify as Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander. Newsom also mentioned a rise in anti-Asian hate, saying it echoes “dark history” seen throughout the nation’s history. An analysis reported to the California Department of Justice from 2016 through 2020 showed the number of anti-Asian hate crime events in the state increased within those five years. It said the highest number of anti-Asian hate crime events occurred in March and April of 2020, when California declared a state of emergency due to the COVID-19

More than 2,100 people have been arrested during pro-Palestinian protests on US college campuses

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Police have arrested more than 2,100 people during pro-Palestinian protests at college campuses across the United States in recent weeks, sometimes using riot gear, tactical vehicles and flash-bang devices to clear tent encampments and occupied buildings. One officer accidentally discharged his gun inside a Columbia University administration building while clearing out protesters camped inside, authorities disclosed Thursday. No one was injured by the officer’s mistake late Tuesday inside Hamilton Hall on the Columbia campus, the NYPD said Thursday. He was trying to use the flashlight attached to his gun at the time and instead fired a single round that struck a frame on the wall. There were other officers but no students in the immediate vicinity, officials said. Body camera footage shows when the officer’s gun went off, but the district attorney’s office is conducting a review, a standard practice. More than 100 people were taken into custody during the Columbia crackdown, just a fraction of the total arrests stemming from recent campus protests over the Israel-Hamas war. A tally by The Associated Press on Thursday found at least 50 incidents

Prep baseball playoffs: Boston Bateman is overpowering in Camarillo’s 9-0 victory

The first thing you notice about left-hander Boston Bateman is his size. He’s 6 feet 8 with lots of hair sticking out from the back of his Camarillo High hat. There’s high expectations whenever he pitches because he rarely gives up hits. Four times this baseball season, he has combined on no-hitters while giving up six hits in 48 innings with 102 strikeouts. So there he was Thursday afternoon with the wind blowing in and not a cloud in the sky, pitching in an opening game of the Southern Section Division 4 playoffs against visiting Dos Pueblos, which joked about turning up the pitching machine to 92 mph in practice. “Not hard enough,” a player said before the game. Hesperia pastor is arrested, accused of sexually abusing foster children

A Hesperia pastor is in police custody following an investigation into allegations he sexually abused two minors under his care as a foster parent. Jose Manuel Lozano is awaiting trial at the High Desert Detention Center in Adelanto, where he is being held in lieu of $5-million bail. Investigators described his alleged victims as girls ages 16 and 10. Jose Manuel Lozano (Hesperia Police Department) The 54-year-old Hesperia resident led bilingual services for a predominately Latino and Spanish-speaking congregation at Zion Assembly Church of God Hesperia, an affiliate of Zion Assembly Church of God International, headquartered in Tennessee. A representative from the latter said in an interview that the organization condemns Lozano’s “ungodliness” and that he was removed from office March 15, when the allegations came to light. He was arrested last week. Pastors at neighboring churches said they were shocked and dismayed upon hearing of Lozano’s arrest. “It just reminds us of all the ways we have systems to protect children,” said Tom Beasley, pastor at Hesperia Community Church. He said he did not know Lozano personally, nor did any of his congregants. “We

Friends of slain wife take the stand in former TikTok star’s trial

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The trial continued Thursday for former TikTok star Ali Abulaban, who is accused of killing his wife, Ana Abulaban, and her friend, Rayburn Barron. In the courtroom, several of Ana’s friends took the witness stand, alleging an abusive marriage that escalated in the months before Ana was shot and killed. The prosecution has been painting the picture of Ali, who went by the username “Jinnkid” online, as abusive and controlling, while the defense is quick to allege drug use and extra-marital affairs. In court, a TikTok video was shown as evidence. The video was a livestream of Ana and Ali fighting that he had posted to his nearly one million followers. In the video, you can hear Ana on the phone with police, as Ali was saying “I have a top secret clearance, trying to **** it up.” Aquarium water may have caused invasive seaweed in San Diego Bay The video was taken in September 2021, about a month before Ana was killed.
