San Jose: Police union names officers injured in Thursday shooting

SAN JOSE — The San Jose Police Officers’ Association released the names of the two officers who were shot while responding to a domestic violence call at a South San Jose hotel on Thursday evening. In an email to their members, the union said Officer Jamie Arredondo on Friday underwent a second surgery without complication. Arredondo, who just finished his first year with the police department, had the first surgery on Thursday night and was listed in stable condition. “His recovery continues,” the union wrote in the email. The police union identified the other officer as Joseph Desroches, who has 3½ years with SJPD. He was released after treatment at a hospital for an apparent graze wound. The two officers were responding to a call from a woman concerned that a man she had a restraining order against was headed to the Extended Stay America on San Ignacio Avenue, where she was staying with her three children. But the man — later identified as 33-year-old Kevin Briones — was not there when police officers arrived, and they left. Around 10:30 p.m., Briones reportedly showed up, and

‘One of the most callous, cold blooded, just worst things’: Pair sentenced for Oakland shootout that killed Brentwood teen

DUBLIN — Two Bay Area men who in 2020 fired guns at each other in Oakland, but missed each other and killed a 19-year-old woman, were sentenced to decades in prison, court records show. Fernando Sevilla, 43, was given 21 years and eight months in state prison, while 29-year-old Willie Samuels was sentenced to 28 years and four months behind bars. Both men have already been transferred to state prison. The sentencings were handed down late last year but haven’t been previously reported. Sevilla and Samuels went on trial last year, each blaming the other for the November 2020 shootout that killed 19-year-old Brentwood resident Madalyn Sandoval. They were both convicted of voluntary manslaughter with gun enhancements, but avoided murder convictions. At the sentencing hearing, several of Sandoval’s family members spoke out. Her brother said he had no sympathy for Sevilla, who he said deserved a life sentence for his “terrible mistake.” But most of the criticism was saved for Samuels, who family members described as a manipulator that coerced and trafficked Sandoval. “You abused my sister. You manipulated her and put her in the

De La Salle baseball accused of sign stealing in formal complaint to NCS. Spartans adamantly deny allegations.

A baseball coach from a school in De La Salle’s league is accusing the Concord powerhouse of relaying catchers’ signs to batters, according to a formal complaint filed Friday to the North Coast Section office. In the complaint, which was obtained by the Bay Area News Group, Dougherty Valley coach Kyle Stewart alleged that De La Salle has “personnel whom have devices such as cameras, telephoto lenses, walkie talkies, and verbal cadence from the coaching staff (that) creates a litany of questionable actions.” De La Salle strongly denied the allegations. The school’s athletic director, Leo Lopoz, wrote in a text message on Friday night that an internal investigation “found absolutely no evidence of sign stealing.” NCS commissioner Pat Cruickshank confirmed that his office received the complaint and is hopeful that the schools can resolve the matter themselves. “This is a complaint from one school to the other, and their two administrations can work on this together, and if I need to get involved I will,” Cruickshank told the Bay Area News Group on Friday. “I’d like to see if the two schools can handle things

Huntington Park Fire Personnel Relocated to Vernon

Firefighters from a severely damaged fire station in Huntington Park are being relocated to a station in Vernon, County Supervisor Janice Hahn said Saturday. The fire broke out early Wednesday at LA County Fire Station 164 at 6301 Santa Fe Ave. No injuries were reported, and the flames were extinguished in about an hour and 20 minutes, the department reported. “The firefighters were sleeping when the fire broke out, and if it were not for a Good Samaritan who rang the station’s doorbell to alert them, this fire could have been much worse,” Hahn said in her regular message to constituents Saturday. “Our firefighters couldn’t reach their turnout gear, so many of them fought the fire in T-shirts and flip-flops until a nearby station could respond,” she added. The station suffered severe damage, and Hahn said the engines and paramedic units were destroyed. “The personnel from this station are being relocated for the time being to the Vernon fire station, and I stand ready to support our Fire Department to ensure the community can continue to depend on the greatest fire department in the world
