Rider Killed When Motorcycle Collides with SUV in Good Hope

A 44-year-old man was killed when his motorcycle collided with an SUV that turned in front of him on Highway 74 in Good Hope, authorities said Friday. The fatality occurred shortly after 9 p.m. Thursday on the westbound 74 at Betty Road, according to the California Highway Patrol. Officer Mike Lassig said the motorcyclist, identified only as a Lake Elsinore man, was traveling at an unknown speed when a 52-year-old Hesperia woman at the wheel of a 2019 Toyota Highlander pulled onto the highway from Betty, intending to head east. The SUV appeared directly in front of the rider, who was “unable to avoid the vehicle,” Lassig said. “The motorcycle collided into the left front side of the (Toyota),” he said. “The victim was ejected off of his motorcycle, onto the 74.” Riverside County Fire Department paramedics reached the location minutes later and pronounced the victim dead at the scene. The Toyota driver and her passenger, identified only as a 53-year-old Hesperia man, suffered unspecified injuries and were treated at the scene by paramedics, but declined to be taken to a hospital, according to the

Dark streets linked to thousands of copper thefts in L.A.: report

The City of Los Angeles received more than 11,000 calls about street lights going dark during the first three months of 2024, according to data compiled by the non-profit news outlet Crosstown L.A. The vast majority of those issues are assumed to be linked to thieves stripping copper wire from critical equipment, a problem that has been plaguing the region for the last several years. Thieves have been targeting copper wire wherever they can find it, often damaging street lights, traffic signs and even railroad tracks. The copper can be sold illegally to recyclers for an easy profit. As of May 1, the price of copper was more than $4.50 per pound, according to Commodity.com. Crosstown found there were 3,880 reports of dark streets in March alone, up 69% from March 2023 and the highest monthly total since at least 2016. The neighborhoods with the most service requests are downtown L.A., Boyle Heights and Westlake. In the 15-month period between January 2023 and April 2024, the Los Angeles Bureau of Street Lighting received 1,344 requests for service in just City Council District 11, which encompasses

Kevin Coles: 1937-2024

Kevin Douglas Coles was born in Lakeport, California 1937 and died in his home in Manila, California on March 7, 2024, with his wife Mary and his daughter Shannon by his side. Kevin was 86 years old and he spent those years living close to the things and people that he loved, doing the things he loved and wanted to do. He was a sailor at heart, all about boats and bays and sailing. He loved to tinker with trucks, boat motors and small engines and get them to work. He loved discovering and exploring new places and making people laugh. He died of old age, of nothing in particular, of a body that just grew too old and fragile to go on. He quietly stopped breathing, passing away peacefully, on to the Great Spirit or to see God or the Buddha or maybe all three, as we believe he had some questions for them.  After he was disabled in his early 40s by heart disease, Kevin became a jewelry artist. He will be remembered for his beautiful jewelry that he sold at fairs and

Plaschke: Hasty firing of coach Darvin Ham is more Lakers madness

Less than two years ago, LeBron James loved Darvin Ham. “So damn excited,” he tweeted when the Lakers hired their rookie coach. Less than a year ago, Rob Pelinka was thankful for Darvin Ham. “I’m incredibly grateful for Darvin, mostly because of just his character and makeup,” Pelinka said to reporters, later adding, “And it’s easy just to focus on Xs and O’s. But I think when you lead with character, and you get a locker room to rally around belief, that’s a special intangible skill that I don’t think a lot of coaches have. That was on full display for Darvin this year.” On Friday, the Lakers whacked Darvin Ham. Say what? “While this was a difficult decision to make, it is the best course of action following a full review of the season,” Pelinka said in a statement. So Ham struggled in one season — his second season — and he’s already out? So Ham is less than one year removed from leading a newly formed team to within four wins of a spot in the NBA Finals … and he’s already gone?

Tommy Dorfman wed ‘private’ person Elise Williams in a secret Santa Monica ceremony

Tommy Dorfman married partner Elise Williams in a secret Santa Monica ceremony in 2023, but the couple’s adorable love story was nothing the actor expected. “I was eager to clock in for my Samantha Jones era,” the “13 Reasons Why” veteran wrote in a Vogue essay published Thursday. “I wanted to explore my newly minted womanhood as freely as possible in the city infamous for short-term flings.” She had just finalized her divorce from businessman Peter Zurkuhlen a month prior to revealing in July 2021 that she was transgender. She wasn’t looking for anything serious after all of that change. (“Today is about clarity: I am a trans woman,” Dorfman told Time magazine at the time. “My pronouns are she/her. My name is Tommy.” She added in an accompanying video, “Some people moved houses during the pandemic. Some people changed genders.”) Back from a “stint” in L.A., after settling into New York City life, she downloaded the dating app Hinge, expecting to find those short-term flings. Instead, she was met with the profile of her “undeniably beautiful” future wife — whom she classifies as a

Patrick Beverley hits fan in stands with ball, kicks ESPN journalist out of interview

An ESPN producer says she has received an apology from Patrick Beverley and the Milwaukee Bucks a day after the player told her she could not take part in a group interview because she does not subscribe to his podcast. In another incident earlier in the evening, Beverley twice threw the ball into the stands — once hitting a woman in the head — during an apparent altercation with another fan toward the end of the Bucks’ season-ending loss to the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference playoffs. The NBA is looking into both incidents. Longtime ESPN field and bureau producer Malinda Adams stood directly to the left of Beverley as he answered questions from a group while sitting in front of his locker after the game. Adams held a microphone in one hand and a smartphone in the other and appeared to be using both to record Beverley’s comments. Beverley, who spent four seasons with the Clippers from 2017-21 and played 45 games with the Lakers during the 2022-2023 season, was wearing a knit hat that featured the words, “Subscribe to the pod.” At

LAPD detective rear-ended civilian on 5 Fwy, drove off: Gascón

Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón has charged an off-duty Los Angeles Police Department detective with a hit-and-run stemming from an incident on the 5 Freeway one year ago. Detective Stephanie Carrillo was in her unmarked police vehicle on May 3, 2023, when she “allegedly rear-ended a civilian’s vehicle causing damage,” Gascón’s office said in a news release. “While Carrillo and the victim were pulled over following the crash, Carrillo allegedly returned to her vehicle and fled the scene,” the District Attorney’s office added. Carrillo, 47, then went to “the California Highway Patrol San Juan Capistrano station in Orange County where she filed a report that she had been involved in a hit-and-run incident,” prosecutors added. Prosecutors did not say why they waited exactly one year to file charges, but in California, the statute of limitations on misdemeanors is one year. Carrillo’s hit-and-run charge is a misdemeanor, and if convicted, she faces up to six months in county jail. “Irresponsible and unlawful behavior by law enforcement as allegedly exhibited by Officer Carrillo not only violates public trust but goes against the oath taken by
