Some 100,000 “dreamers” likely to get Obamacare under new rule, White House says

The move took longer than promised to finalize and fell short of President Biden’s initial proposal to allow those migrants to sign up for Medicaid , the health insurance program that provides nearly free coverage for the nation’s poorest people. But it will allow thousands of migrants to access lucrative tax breaks when they sign up for coverage after the Affordable Care Act’s marketplace enrollment opens Nov. 1, just days ahead of the presidential election. While it may help the president boost his appeal at a crucial time among Latinos, a crucial voting bloc he needs to turn out to win the election, the move is certain to prompt more criticism among conservatives about the president’s border and migrant policies . Earlier in the day, McDougal’s former attorney Keith Davidson testified about that deal and another he negotiated from just before the presidential election: a $130,000 payment from Cohen to adult film star Stormy Daniels. Davidson and the jury heard another of Cohen’s recordings.

San Luis Obispo High School hosts annual Empty Bowls fundraiser

Students and faculty at San Luis Obispo High School held their annual Empty Bowls fundraising event Thursday. Students from the ceramics club and ceramics classes teamed up to make about 300 bowls, while students from the culinary classes made the soup enjoyed by attendees. Proceeds from the event will go to the 40 Prado Homeless Services Center, which will help CAPSLO provide things ranging from emergency shelter to safe parking and on-site health care services. This year’s event was the first time it was held on campus. The previous seven years it was at the farmers’ market in downtown San Luis Obispo. “The kids get to make art, they get to practice their skills, they also get to give back to the community,” said Tawnee Houle, a ceramics teacher at San Luis Obispo High School. “It’s a really good cause to get involved with and they get community service hours for it.” Students also showcased their artistic abilities with an art show while students from the jazz band at the high school played music for entertainment.

City of Santa Maria receives $120K grant to improve pedestrian and bicyclist safety

The City of Santa Maria just received a boost to improve bicycle and pedestrian safety. The city received a $120,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety to promote safe practices and provide education about the importance of sharing the road. City officials said the funds will support a variety of safety-focused activities, such as developing programs aimed at educating young riders and pedestrians, community and school education programs, helmet-fitting inspections and distributing helmets to those in need, among other things. “I think it’s going to be good because it’s going to provide funding to create some educational programs to educate riders on safe bike practices,” said Scott Clark, owner of Main Street Cycles in Santa Maria. “Both in what to wear and how to protect themselves and be visible, as well as, I think the importance of learning how to follow the rules of the road.” The funding will also go towards pop-up events that promote the importance of visibility on the roads and the equipment needed to be visible to drivers. The grant program will run through September 2024.

Two lawmakers who never agree on anything are taking a stand | Flowers

John F. Kennedy won the Pulitzer Prize for his book “Profiles In Courage,” a series of essays that focused on eight senators throughout U.S. history who — despite serious pressures from their colleagues and constituents — did what they believed to be the right and moral thing. I have always been fascinated with people who find within themselves the ability to defy expectations, anger their presumed allies and follow their own conscience. It is a rare quality, rarer still in this current climate of tribalism. But last week, two men showed up on my radar screen, polar opposites in their demeanor and their politics. Their courage derives from a refusal to accommodate the blatant antisemitism that is infecting our streets, our media, our campuses and our hearts in the wake of Oct. 7. Pennsylvania’s junior Sen. John Fetterman has shown immense integrity, wrapped in Western Pennsylvania grit, by confronting the pro-Palestinian advocates who regularly demand that he condemn Israel. Not only has he waved an Israeli flag at them, he’s mocked them as they should be mocked. My favorite incident involved an invocation of the Millenials’

Dear Abby: I’ve been advised to stay in the house with my violent wife

DEAR ABBY: As far as I’m concerned, my marriage is over. For the past 10 years or more, my wife has recklessly spent our joint savings and my pension savings, taken out credit cards in my name without my knowledge and put us through bankruptcy. We now have over $50k in debt with nothing left. She has also been having affairs on the side. I can’t trust a word she says or continue to live like this. Each time, she has begged for forgiveness and promised not to do it anymore — until she does it a week later. We agreed a month ago to separate, but now she realizes there’s not going to be any regular income from me and wants to stay married. When I told her no, she attacked me physically. I don’t want the police involved. I have a daughter on the spectrum. Although she’s a young adult, she will blame me, and what relationship I have with her will be destroyed. I have been advised to not move out, as that can be seen by the courts as abandoning my

No puedo

Long Beach declares public health emergency after deadly tuberculosis outbreak

City officials declared a public health emergency Thursday after a tuberculosis outbreak left one person dead and nine others hospitalized. Health officials said the outbreak stemmed from a group of people who stayed together at a Long Beach hotel room. As of April 29, 14 cases of tuberculosis (TB) are associated with this outbreak — nine of them required hospitalization and one case was fatal. Investigators said around 170 people have likely been exposed to the illness. Health officials are in contact with any guests or individuals who were at the hotel during the time the infected people were present. Tuberculosis is a serious illness that mainly affects the lungs, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The bacteria is spread through the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes or speaks. “Tuberculosis spreads easily where people gather in crowds or where people live in crowded conditions,” Long Beach health officials said. “People with HIV/AIDS and other people with weakened immune systems have a higher risk of catching tuberculosis than people with typical immune systems.” “Symptoms of TB disease depend on where in

Authorities became aware of the three missing persons through publications made on social networks, the Attorney General’s Office of the State of Baja California said in a press release Thursday. “It should be noted that, although the official report was made 48 hours after the disappearance, the FGE acted immediately upon learning of the facts through publications on digital platforms,” the release read. During a press conference Thursday, State Attorney General María Elena Andrade said they are “making every effort” and “have made progress in the investigation.” Woman’s vehicle hit by ‘unknown projectile’ while driving on highway Three Mexican nationals are under investigation “to obtain information that will allow them to locate the missing persons,” according to prosecutors. FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — Two men have been detained after several fliers containing opinions on religious views were posted on two Northwest Fresno places of worship. Fresno Police were called to the Temple Beth Israel at 4:18 p.m. for a report of two men shouting and placing fliers on the temple. Officers in the area quickly made their way to the St. Anthony’s of Padua on Bullard and Maroa avenues, where the men had moved on. When Action News crews arrived on scene, multiple police vehicles were surrounding a van parked alongside the church. “We’re looking at all the laws that may have been violated,” said Lt. Marcus Gray II with the Fresno Police Department. “This is a private campus. Things concerning being on that campus, everything is going to be in play when we’re looking at this investigation.” Spray paint on the side of the van spelled out “repent or perish,” the same phrase on the fliers posted at the Jewish temple and St. Anthony’s of Padua. Investigators say the men were detained but so far, no charges have been filed. Fresno Animal Control

Fresno State is advancing black student success thanks to new funding

Friday, May 3, 2024 2:04AM After receiving more than $4 million from the California State University, Fresno State is set to expand the Black Student Success Initiative’s outreach. FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — California State University has allocated over $4.6 million to advance and elevate black students across its 23 campuses. “One of the messages that came through very clearly is that they did not want this action plan to be another report on the shelf, and we have taken that charge very seriously,” says California State University Deputy Vice Chancellor of Academic and Student Affairs Dilcie Perez. She adds that the University system is taking action to help advance black student success across all 23 universities by allocating over $4.6 million. In 2023, each campus submitted individual action plans detailing how they would use the funds to make a difference. “Each university identified 1 to 3 items that would help them move forward in these efforts, and listed on our website are each of the action items that every university committed to,” said Perez. Dine and Dish: North Fork BBQ in North Fork

MADERA COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) — North Fork BBQ may be located in a small town in Madera County, but it draws customers from all over. The setting is perfect for an outdoor meal. Nine miles from Bass Lake, you come across a sight for hungry eyes on Road 222. “Our restaurantis lodgedon the side of a mountain, and so we have a stream that goes right under the restaurant,” said owner Trevor Seward. He shared his approach to BBQ, “With the family being from the south, the pulled pork influences, the Alabama white sauce influences. So when we made the restaurant, we said, let’s not just stick to one genre. Let’s be a hybrid of BBQ.” Locals and area workers pack the place because the staff goes big on everything they do, like the tri-tip sandwiches. “It just became muscle memory,” explains Tony Harris in the kitchen. “Like the look of it, how much is going to fit on the bun, what looks good on the bun as far as the mound goes. Height and presentation is always a big key.” Towering sandwiches match the
