Sam Ash, iconic retailer to musicians, plays its last notes

Kristina Bialkowski remembers the day she got her first guitar at the Sam Ash Music Store on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood. She was 10 and her father, who had started teaching her to play the instrument, took her into the shop down the street from their home to browse. Now a musician who sometimes plays alongside the singer Geia, Bialkowski recalled staring up at the menagerie of instruments on the wall and feeling elated when she made her choice: a black, electric Fender. She returned through the years to buy a synthesizer and a bass and, in high school, to hang out with friends, so she felt stunned recently when she drove by and saw a sign announcing that the shop — along with all the other locations in the iconic music chain that grew from a single store in Brooklyn into a nationwide business behemoth — would soon close down. “No way!” thought Bialkowski, 29, who works in music marketing and also posts covers of songs on Instagram and TikTok. But then she thought back to her recent trips to the shop and how

Big Bear Lake before and after a 15-foot increase in water depth thanks to winter storms

After hitting record lows two years ago due to drought, Big Bear Lake reported a 10-foot increase in its water level in December 2023 and new data shows it’s risen even higher the first four months of 2024. In December 2022, the water level at Big Bear Lake was just below 55 feet, officials said. Two consecutive winters brought heavy storms in early 2023 and 2024, resulting in significant rainfall and snowpack that have helped restore the lake after water levels hit a record low in late 2022. As of Tuesday, April 30, the lake depth was 68 feet, still about 4 feet below its capacity, data shows. The lake hasn’t been full since 2011, according to Brittany Lamson, interim general manager of the administration department at Big Bear Municipal Water District, which manages the lake. Over the past two years, the lake depth has increased a total of 15 feet, Lamson said. Water levels affect recreation, wildlife and the local economy in the area. According to Lamson, the lake was still getting inflow this week. Any inflow after April 1 is good news for

Patrick Bailey leaves SF Giants game vs. Phillies after foul ball off face mask

PHILADELPHIA — In search of offense, the Giants lost their most productive hitter of late in the second inning of their series opener Friday night against the Phillies. As Alec Bohm’s walk-up music rang through Citizens Bank Park, catcher Patrick Bailey motioned to the Giants dugout. He requested the training staff and appeared to tell them, “I’m dizzy.” The catcher accompanied head trainer Dave Groeschner and manager Bob Melvin back to the dugout and was replaced by Tom Murphy. The Giants have not announced the reason for Bailey’s departure. Nothing immediately preceding Bailey’s exit suggested a concussion or any other injury. The previous inning, he was struck in the face mask by a foul ball off Bohm’s bat but remained in the game for the final batter of the first inning and the first two batters of the second. Saturday storm to bring the rain

CHICO — It appears a hefty rain storm is scheduled to hit Northern California on Saturday before quickly moving on. Bill Rasch, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Sacramento office said the storm is expected to take hold Saturday morning and bring with it considerable precipitation and a slightly lower snow level. Rasch said the temperature is also expected to drop. “(Friday was) in the 80s and (Saturday) the highs will be in the 50s,” Rasch said. “It’s a fast mover too. It should be mostly sunny on Sunday.” Chico is looking at more than an inch of rain, much like surrounding valley areas such as Red Bluff, Oroville and Orland. Paradise and surrounding foothills can expect as much as 2.14 inches of rain. Additionally, Rasch said wind gusts could go as high as 35 miles per hour.
