IVF will be covered by insurance for many Californians after Newsom signs bill

SACRAMENTO —  Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill on Sunday that requires large health insurance companies to cover in vitro fertilization — a win for reproductive health advocates amid nationwide concerns about the future of access to fertility treatments. The bill also expands healthcare benefits to LGBTQ+ families seeking to have children, changing the definition of infertility for insurance purposes to include “a person’s inability to reproduce either as an individual or with their partner without medical intervention.” “California is a proud reproductive freedom state — and that includes increasing access to fertility services that help those who want to start a family,” Newsom said in a statement released Sunday. “As Republicans across the country continue to claw back rights and block access to IVF — all while calling themselves ‘the party of families’ — we are proud to help every Californian make their own choices about the family they want.” The new California law comes as conservative groups have increasingly opposed IVF over ethical and religious concerns about the use of embryos — and when life really begins. While Trump recently vowed to cover the

Shohei Ohtani falls short of triple crown, but extends hitting streak in Dodgers finale

DENVER —  Shohei Ohtani didn’t win the National League batting title, or claim the NL’s first triple crown since 1937, during the Dodgers season-finale 2-1 win over the Colorado Rockies on Sunday. The fact it was even a possibility, however, was a testament to the dominant tear with which Ohtani finished his first Dodgers season. Despite going one for four in Game 162 at Coors Field, Ohtani concluded the regular season with a staggering stat line: .310 batting average, his new career-high 54 home runs and 130 RBIs, topping the NL in both categories 59 stolen bases, including one Sunday, the most by a Japanese-born player 411 total bases, second most in Dodgers history and the most by any major league player since 2001 “Obviously, you’ve seen a superstar,” manager Dave Roberts said. “Like I’ve said, I think the thing that I marvel at is the expectations that are put on him, that he puts on himself, and to still go out there every day and put on a show — I can’t imagine the pressure with all those expectations. But his preparedness, his work is

Four takeaways from first debate in 2026 California governor’s race

SAN FRANCISCO —  Four of the top Democrats running for California governor met Sunday morning for the first major candidate forum of the 2026 election, a cordial discussion with few fireworks and almost no jabs at the politician they hope to succeed, Gov. Gavin Newsom. The forum in downtown San Francisco, sponsored by the National Union of Healthcare Workers, featured gubernatorial candidates Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis, State Supt. of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond, state Sen. Toni Atkins of San Diego and former state Controller Betty Yee. The event, livestreamed on the Los Angeles Times website, was held very early in the 2026 gubernatorial campaign, just over a month before the high-stakes 2024 presidential election. Even more candidates for California’s highest office are expected to jump into the race in the months ahead. The forum was also missing one of the best-known Democrats in the race, former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. The union said Villaraigosa was invited but declined to attend. Do you agree with Newsom? The four candidates were repeatedly pressed over Newsom’s track record and how they may govern differently. They mostly sided with

Man Arrested in Fatal Turlock Stabbing

TURLOCK – Police arrested a man on murder charges in a fatal stabbing that took place Friday night. Ahmad Abweny, a 28-year-old Modesto man, was identified and arrested with the assistance of the Modesto Police Department. The incident occurred Friday night at about 10:30pm, when officers were called to a report of a person stabbed near the intersection of Monte Vista Avenue and Golden State Boulevard. Enrique Gomez, a 49-year-old Turlock resident, was found on the ground stabbed. Emergency personnel provided aid, but Gomez died at the scene. Detectives with the Turlock Police Department responded to investigate and learned that the stabbing was the result of a road rage argument that took place at a nearby apartment complex. Through evidence and witness statements, investigators were able to identify the suspect and the involved vehicle. Within hours, Abweny was located with the use of license plate reader technology and with help from the Modesto Police Department. He was arrested and booked into jail on murder charges. In a released statement, Turlock Police Chief Jason Hedden credited the use of the license plate readers in helping find

California governor vetoes first-in-nation AI safety bill

September 29, 2024 / 5:46 PM EDT / AP California bill to limit AI replicas California lawmakers pass bill to limit AI replicas 03:30 California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Sunday vetoed a landmark bill aimed at establishing first-in-the-nation safety measures for large artificial intelligence models. The decision is a major blow to efforts attempting to rein in the homegrown industry that is rapidly evolving with little oversight. The bill would have established some of the first regulations on large-scale AI models in the nation and paved the way for AI safety regulations across the country, supporters said. Earlier this month, the Democratic governor told an audience at Dreamforce, an annual conference hosted by software giant Salesforce, that California must lead in regulating AI in the face of federal inaction but that the proposal “can have a chilling effect on the industry.” The proposal, which drew fierce opposition from startups, tech giants and several Democratic House members, could have hurt the homegrown industry by establishing rigid requirements, Newsom said. “While well-intentioned, SB 1047 does not take into account whether an AI system is deployed in high-risk

Police Boost Presence After Four Stabbings Reported in Long Beach

Long Beach police were boosting their presence Sunday after four stabbings occurred in the city in a nine-hour period, authorities said. “The LBPD will have additional police presence today, including patrol officers and Neighborhood Safety Bike Team officers, to engage with residents and businesses,” the Long Beach Police Department said in a statement Sunday morning. The first attack occurred at about 6:20 p.m. Saturday in the 2000 block of East Pacific Coast Highway. Police said an argument escalated into a fight and the male victim was stabbed several times in the upper body. The suspects fled the scene before police arrived, while the victim was hospitalized with stable vital signs. At about 2 a.m., officers responded to the 5100 block of Second Street in Belmont Shore, where two men were in a physical altercation which escalated when the suspect stabbed the victim in the upper body. That victim was rushed to a hospital in critical condition. Police said the suspect fled the scene, and no motive or description was immediately available. At 2:20 a.m., officers responded to a local hospital regarding two stabbing victims. The

John Ashton, ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ actor, dies at 76

NEW YORK — John Ashton, the veteran character actor who memorably played the gruff but lovable police detective John Taggart in the “Beverly Hills Cop” films, has died. He was 76. Ashton died Thursday in Fort Collins, Colorado, his family announced in a statement released by Ashton’s manager, Alan Somers, on Sunday. No cause of death was immediately available. John Ashton arrives at the premiere of “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” on June 20, 2024, in Beverly Hills, Calif. (Photo by Richard Shotwell/Invision/AP, file) In a career that spanned more than 50 years, Ashton was a regular face across TV series and films, including “Midnight Run,” “Little Big League” and “Gone Baby Gone.” But in the “Beverly Hills Cop” films, Ashton played an essential part of an indelible trio. Though Eddie Murphy’s Axel Foley, a Detroit detective following a case in Los Angeles, was the lead, the two local detectives – Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) and Ashton’s Taggart – were Axel’s sometimes reluctant, sometimes eager collaborators. Of the three, Taggart – “Sarge” to Billy – was the more fearful, by-the-book detective. But he would regularly

Bus-sized asteroid will temporarily join Earth’s orbit as ‘mini moon’ starting Sunday

By Christina Larson Sunday, September 29, 2024 7:32PM An asteroid known as 2024 PT5 will temporarily join Earth’s orbit in space as a “mini moon”, but it won’t be for long. LOS ANGELES — Earth’s moon will soon have some company – a “mini moon.” The mini moon is actually an asteroid about the size of a school bus at 33 feet (10 meters). When it whizzes by Earth on Sunday, it will be temporarily trapped by our planet’s gravity and orbit the globe – but only for about two months. The space rock – 2024 PT5 – was first spotted in August by astronomers at Complutense University of Madrid using a powerful telescope located in Sutherland, South Africa. These short-lived mini moons are likely more common than we realize, said Richard Binzel, an astronomer at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The last known one was detected in 2020. “This happens with some frequency, but we rarely see them because they’re very small and very hard to detect,” he said. “Only recently has our survey capability reached the point of spotting them routinely.” The discovery by

News Analysis: Iran faces deep quandary over how to respond to Israel

TEHRAN —  Iran faces a complex dilemma over whether to attack Israel directly or use its string of proxy armies — as weakened as some of those now appear — to retaliate for the assassination of the head of the Lebanese Hezbollah militant and political organization. Diplomats, analysts and officials throughout the region and in the West agree that an all-out war between Iran and Israel would be devastating, quite likely more for the Islamic Republic than its archenemy. The fragile state of its economy and domestic politics is another motivation for Iran to hold its fire. But failure to forcefully avenge the decapitation of its most important proxy — its military and strategic “crown jewel” in the so-called Axis of Resistance that surrounds Israel — could suggest weakness and make followers in Lebanon, Iraq, Yemen and elsewhere question what Iranian support really means. The conundrum appears to have created a schism between some of Iran’s top leaders, who are proceeding with caution, and its biggest hard-liners, who are demanding swift and decisive action. Israel’s assassination Friday of Hassan Nasrallah, veteran leader of the powerful faction

Gov. Gavin Newsom vetoes AI safety bill opposed by Silicon Valley

SAN FRANCISCO —  Gov. Gavin Newsom on Sunday vetoed SB 1047, an artificial intelligence safety bill that would have established requirements for developers of advanced AI models to create protocols aimed at preventing catastrophes. The bill, introduced by Sen. Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco), would have required developers to submit their safety plans to the state attorney general, who could hold them liable if AI models they directly control were to cause harm or imminent threats to public safety. Additionally, the legislation would have required tech firms to be able to turn off the AI models they directly control if things went awry. In his veto message, Newsom said the legislation could give the public a “false sense of security about controlling this fast-moving technology” because it targeted only large-scale and expensive AI models and not smaller, specialized systems. “While well-intentioned, SB 1047 does not take into account whether an AI system is deployed in high-risk environments, involves critical decision-making or the use of sensitive data,” Newsom’s veto message stated. “Instead, the bill applies stringent standards to even the most basic functions — so long as a

Injured Sharks players improving, but questions about availability remain

SAN JOSE – Injured San Jose Sharks defensemen Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Shakir Mukhamadullin and goalie Yaroslav Askarov could all begin to skate again soon although questions remain whether any of the three will be ready for the start of the regular season. Sharks coach Ryan Warsofsky said Sunday that Vlasic (upper body), Mukhamadullin (lower body), and Askarov (lower body) are all getting closer to skating on their own but will not be practicing with the team right away. Vlasic, Mukhamadullin and Askarov have been out since the start of training camp on Sept. 19 as the Sharks have tried to remain patient with each player’s recovery. Still, starting Monday, the Sharks will have just three practices and three games left before Oct. 7, when teams must submit cap-compliant rosters of no more than 23 players to the NHL. The Sharks’ season-opener is Oct. 10 at home against the St. Louis Blues. Mukhamadullin and Askarov, both waivers-exempt, could be assigned to the Barracuda once they are healthy. Askarov’s injury would seemingly ensure that the Sharks would start the season with two goalies, Mackenzie Blackwood and Vitek

3 San Diego firefighters seriously injured in crash while heading to assist in hurricane response

Three members of the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department were seriously injured in a vehicle crash early Sunday in East Texas while heading to assist in hurricane relief efforts in North Carolina, officials said. The three — a battalion chief and two captains — were in a Ford F-350 truck, a department vehicle, that was involved in a collision with a civilian vehicle on East Highway 20 near the border with Louisiana, around 2:45 a.m. All three were transported by helicopter to a hospital in Shreveport, La. They were reported in “various conditions ranging from moderate to critical,” Assistant Fire Chief Jim Gaboury told reporters early Sunday. The names of the injured were not released. Details about the crash were not released. The closest town to the crash site is Waskom, Texas. The three are part of a 48-member team that left Friday from San Diego to support Hurricane Helene relief efforts. They are part of Urban Search & Rescue California Task Force 8, a team that includes firefighters from several agencies, emergency-room doctors, a structural engineer and a duty mechanic. There were 18 vehicles deployed

No comeback this time as Bears’ defense stops Rams’ momentum

CHICAGO —  So much for that confidence boost. A week after a dramatic comeback victory, the Rams could not maintain any momentum against the Chicago Bears. The Rams’ 24-18 defeat on Sunday before 59,074 at Soldier Field, dropped their record to 1-3 going into next Sunday’s game against the Green Bay Packers at SoFi Stadium. After that, the Rams will have an off week, a chance for some of their injured starters to perhaps fully recover from injuries and return. Stafford had brought back the Rams against the San Francisco 49ers, but he could not do the same against a stout Bears defense. On a day when Stafford moved into 10th place on the NFL’s career passing yardage list, the Rams could not beat a Bears team led by quarterback Caleb Williams, the top pick in the NFL draft. Stafford completed 20 of 29 passes for 224 yards, with an interception. He moved past Eli Manning on the all-time list. Kyren Williams rushed for 94 yards and a touchdowns in 19 carries. He caught four passes for 10 yards. Tutu Atwell had four catches for 82

Simi Valley mother of 5 stabbed to death in front of her children

Sept. 29, 2024 1:03 PM PT A Simi Valley woman was stabbed to death by her boyfriend in front of her children in a domestic violence incident Friday, police said. Police received a call from the victim’s daughter, who said her mother was being stabbed by her live-in boyfriend, the Simi Valley Police Department said in a news release Sunday. Officers arrived at the family’s home shortly after 6 p.m. in the 800 block of California Avenue, where they found the victim, Jessica Tinoco, 34, suffering from multiple stab wounds to the face, chest and abdomen, police said. Tinoco was transported to Los Robles Hospital but died from her injuries. Police said they quickly took the suspect, Raymond Rivas, 34, into custody without incident and booked him into Ventura County Main Jail on charges of murder. Rivas was on Post Release Community Supervision at the time of the incident. He was also placed on a hold for violating probation at the time of the stabbing. Tinoco was a mother of five who had been in a romantic relationship with Rivas for a little less than

Residents ordered to evacuate or shelter in place after fire at chemical plant

Updated on: September 29, 2024 / 3:42 PM EDT / AP Some residents east of Atlanta were evacuated while others were told to shelter in place to avoid contact with a chemical plume after a fire at a chemical plant. Rockdale County Fire Chief Marian McDaniel told reporters that a sprinkler head malfunctioned around 5 a.m. Sunday at the BioLab plant in Conyers. That caused water to mix with a water-reactive chemical, which produced a plume of chemicals. The chief said she wasn’t sure what chemicals were included. A small roof fire was initially contained, but reignited Sunday afternoon, Sheriff Eric Levett said in a video posted on Facebook as gray smoke billowed into the sky behind him. He said authorities were trying to get the fire under control and urged people to stay away from the area. People in the northern part of Rockdale County were ordered to evacuate and others were told to shelter in place with windows and doors closed. Sheriff’s office spokesperson Christine Nesbitt did not know the number of people evacuated. The federal Environmental Protection Agency and the Georgia Environmental Protection Division
