Authorities investigating after shooting involving deputy in National City

Authorities are investigating after at least one San Diego County sheriff’s deputy was involved in a shooting on a National City thoroughfare early Friday afternoon, officials said. A deputy was injured in the incident but is expected to be OK, a sheriff’s official said. It’s not clear how the deputy was injured, or if anyone was struck by gunfire or otherwise injured. Details are sparse. An official said the encounter happened just before 1:40 p.m. on Mile of Cars Way near Hoover Avenue, just east of Interstate 5. NBC San Diego showed footage of deputies searching through a white four-door sedan at the location. National City police issued an advisory asking people to avoid the area, citing the investigation and road closure. San Diego police will be picking up the investigation into the shooting, as per a countywide protocol designed to prevent law enforcement agencies from investigating themselves.

San Diego firefighters head east to help with Hurricane Helene search and rescue

The Type III water rescue team made up of 46 firefighters and support staff from various local agencies will head to areas hit the hardest by the Category 4 hurricane that made landfall Thursday and assist with search-and-rescue operations. The specialized unit, known as California Urban Search and Rescue Task Force 8, will work closely with the Federal Emergency Management Administration and three other similar task forces from other Southern California agencies to also handle incident management and emergency operations, the governor’s office said. “These highly trained individuals perform search and rescue operations in the most challenging conditions — whether it’s collapsed structures, flooded areas, or dangerous debris,” said California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services Director Nancy Ward. “Their ability to swiftly locate survivors, provide medical care, and navigate extreme environments makes a world of difference in saving lives when every second counts.” Officials said the team will get to North Carolina by driving

Soderstrom, Athletics say farewell to Oakland

OAKLAND — With a sold-out crowd on their feet at the Oakland Coliseum on Thursday afternoon chanting “Let’s Go Oakland” at the top of their lungs and Texas Rangers outfielder Travis Jankowski at the plate facing a 1-2 count, Athletics All-Star closer Mason Miller unloaded a 103 mph fastball. Jankowski made weak contact, rolling over to third baseman Max Schuemann, who fired the ball across the diamond to first baseman Tyler Soderstrom to not only end the game by a 3-2 score, but end the team’s 57-year tenure in “The Town.”

LA Librería, L.A.’s only Spanish-language children’s bookstore, celebrates new space

Inside LA Librería’s new West Adams location, a hush falls over the thick crowd of multigenerational families. Angelica Sauceda, a librarian at Anaheim Public Libraries, faces an audience of young readers ready to hear the bilingual story of “La Siesta Perfecta.” “Es hora,” she calls out. It’s story time. On Sunday, the only children’s Spanish-language bookstore in Los Angeles invited customers to celebrate the grand opening of their biggest storefront yet. Back in 2012, founders Chiara Arroyo and Celene Navarrete set out with the goal of providing quality, imported Spanish-language titles to local schools and bilingual families. And their newly opened 2,400-square-foot location marks the moment they have been patiently waiting for — the ability to bring their community together in a space that finally fits. “When we were an appointment-only showroom, people were always knocking on the door trying to get in. When we opened a small storefront, we didn’t have enough space for events. Most of the time, all the kids would have to be inside and all the parents wait outside,” said Arroyo. “We needed more space to move.” Children listen during

54 people rescued from roof of Tennessee hospital

UNICOI COUNTY, Tenn. (WJHL) — More than 50 people were sent to the roof of a Tennessee hospital on Friday, waiting for hours to be rescued as flooding cut the hospital off from land. Ballad Health, a hospital chain headquartered in Tennessee, said at 10:45 a.m. that the Unicoi County Hospital had closed and suspended operations due to the threat of flooding. Unicoi County Emergency Management Agency told hospital leadership that the hospital needed to be evacuated due to the “unusually high and rising water from the Nolichucky River.” There were 11 patients at the hospital that Ballad planned to transfer, but ambulances sent to evacuate them could not safely get there due to the rising water. “The hospital has been engulfed by extremely dangerous and rapidly moving water,” Ballad said in a news release. The water started coming into the building and was moving so quickly, rescue boats weren’t able to safely navigate the area. By around 12:30 p.m., 54 people had been relocated to the hospital’s roof, Ballad said. “Due to high winds, no helicopters could safely fly in an effort to help

Few arrests during Oakland A’s final game at Coliseum, OPD reports

Oakland police reported few arrests at the Oakland A’s final game inside the Coliseum, when tens of thousands of people bid farewell to the storied franchise that has called the East Bay home since 1968. Four people were arrested for public intoxication at the Thursday afternoon game against the Texas Rangers, which doubled as a funeral of sorts as the team prepares to move to West Sacramento and later Las Vegas in the coming years, according to Oakland police Capt. William Febel. In all, 46,889 people packed the stadium for one final game. The game was “largely a peaceful event,” Febel said at a press conference Friday. He added that two people were ejected for running onto the field during the game. No injuries were reported. “The staff at the Oakland Coliseum said it as a very successful event,” Febel added. The press conference came as Oakland police leaders heralded crime figures that appear to signal a drop in crime across Oakland this year, including in aggravated assaults, rapes and robberies. In addition, Oakland police have investigated 69 homicides so far this year, a drop

Science Give Marijuana Users Some Good Heart News

By Amy Hansen, The Fresh Toast Science continues to prove cannabis has medical benefits…and more people are acknowledging the value of the plant As the debate about marijuana being rescheduled continues, science continues to prove cannabis has medical benefits. While more research needs to be done in a variety of areas, medical organizations are coming around to the data regarding the plant’s help in medical conditions. And now science give marijuana users some good heart news. Heart disease is the leading cause of death of women, men, and people of most racial and ethnic groups. Known as the silent killer, it can strike without advance notice, killing over 600,000 in the US and Canada alone. But science has come a long way in matter of open heart surgery and other key elements around heart health. Despite the negative perception about cannabis, it is alcohol which aggravates cardio problems. Heavy drinking is linked to heart conditions. Excessive alcohol intake can lead to high blood pressure, heart failure or stroke. It can also contribute to cardiomyopathy, a disorder that affects the heart muscle. State Farm projects dropping 1 million policies in California over next five years

State Farm is projecting that by 2028, the number of policies it issues in California will drop by 1 million, as the insurance giant grapples with financial distress and pulls back from the Golden State. According to a filing submitted to the California Department of Insurance on Sept. 10, the insurer’s policies for property insurance, which includes homeowners insurance, could decline from 3.1 million at the end of 2023 to 2 million by the end of 2028. Since May 2023, State Farm has not been writing any new homeowners policies in the state, as wildfire risk and increasing construction costs have led the company’s liabilities to balloon. The drop noted in the filings includes both planned non-renewals, as well as natural attrition as policyholders decide to cancel or switch their insurance coverage. Amy Bach, executive director of United Policyholders, an insurance consumer advocacy group, said that it’s possible that these projections could change and eventually have State Farm increasing the number of policies in the state, especially if the State Department of Insurance makes some of the reforms that it has proposed to the insurance
