Final election preparations underway in Merced County

Tuesday, November 5, 2024 6:46AM Final election preparations underway in Merced County Merced County workers were seen gathering mail-in ballots on Monday afternoon. MERCED COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) — Merced County workers were seen gathering mail-in ballots on Monday afternoon. With less than 24 hours until the election, Registrar of Voters Mel Levey says it’s been a busy time. “We’ve had staff working long days, every single day to staff the vote centers,” said Levey. He has noticed a lot of early voting activity this year. As of Monday morning, there were more than 40,000 ballots cast within the county. “Our previous highest turnout for Merced County was just under 79% in November 2020. I think we’ll come pretty close to that if not break that. And that would indicate to us that at least 100,000 ballots could be cast for this election,” said Levey. Merced resident Mike Conway and his wife were just two of dozens of people casting their ballot. Conway believes it’s important to participate in the democratic process. “One of the top issues I think is a woman’s right to choose, housing

Tuesday is last chance to vote in presidential election

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Close to 150,000 people will be voting in person, along with between 400 to 500,000 people turning in their mail in ballot on the 5th. Here are a couple of rules of the road for in-person voting. It’s worth reminding people wearing election gear, you can get barred from the voting booth until you fix the problem. “Electioneering is prohibited, and when I say electioneering, that means showing the name or the likeness of a candidate or measure on the ballot,” said Cynthia Paes of the San Diego County Registrar. So, Trump or Harris Hats, shirts, sweatpants, or any item that expressly shows their faces or names will keep you from voting until logo is covered. “Politely go up to them and remind them of the rules and ask them if they could just remove that hat or cover it up if it’s a T-shirt,” Paes said. For those still holding their mail in ballot, you have not missed out. You can simply go to any of the drop 235 vote centers or any of the 150 drop boxes to

Stanford’s blowout win headlines first day of Bay Area college basketball

The landscape of college basketball in the Bay Area looks fairly different since last season ended. Tara VanDerveer is no longer the coach of the Stanford women’s team, retiring following an unparalleled career. Jerod Haase was fired after eight seasons of coaching Stanford’s men’s team. The Bay lost a lot of talent, headlined by Aidan Mahaney transferring to UConn and Kiki Iriafen departing for USC. Oh, there’s also the fact that Cal and Stanford are now in the ACC, set to clash with the likes of Duke and Kentucky. Here’s how the Bay Area’s college basketball teams fared on the first day of the season: (San Jose State’s women’s teams and San Francisco’s men’s team will play their first games of the season on Tuesday) Stanford (women’s) def. La Moyne, 107-43 Kate Paye, who has the unenviable task of replacing one of the best coaches in college basketball history, didn’t have to sweat much as Stanford cruised to a blowout win against La Moyne of the Northeast Conference. After seldom playing in her first two seasons, redshirt junior guard Jzaniya Harriel finished with career-high 24

San Jose man arrested in connection with retail theft spree

SAN JOSE – A man in his 40s was arrested last week on suspicion of stealing tens of thousands of dollars worth of goods from businesses in San Jose over the past eight months, according to authorities. Since March, the San Jose Police Department’s Organized Retail Theft Detail has investigated 113 retail theft incidents, police spokesperson Stacie Shih said in a news release. The same suspect stole merchandise from businesses including Home Depot, Dick’s Sporting Goods and Target, Shih said. On Oct. 28, police arrested the man and booked him into Santa Clara County jail on grand theft charges. The investigation was funded by an $8.4 million grant from the California Board of State and Community Corrections. In a statement, San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan thanked the retail theft detail for “leaning in and using the resources we have available to hold bad actors accountable.” “Retail theft harms our economy, levies a theft tax on working families and makes us all feel less safe,” Mahan said. “We need to give our law enforcement agencies across the state of California more tools to address this crisis

Boeing factory strike ends as workers vote to accept contract

SEATTLE (AP) — Factory workers at Boeing voted to accept a contract offer and end their strike after more than seven weeks, clearing the way for the aerospace giant to resume production of its bestselling airliner and generate much-needed cash. Leaders of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers district in Seattle said 59% of members who cast ballots agreed to approve the company’s fourth formal offer and the third put to a vote. The deal includes a 38% wage increase over four years, and ratification and productivity bonuses. However, Boeing refused to meet strikers’ demand to restore a company pension plan that was frozen nearly a decade ago. The contract’s ratification on the eve of Election Day cleared the way for a major U.S. manufacturer and government contractor to restart Pacific Northwest assembly lines that the walkout idled for 53 days. Bank of America analysts estimated last month that Boeing was losing about $50 million a day during the now-ended strike, which did not affect a nonunion plant in South Carolina where the company makes 787s. Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg said in a

Average age of U.S. homebuyers rises to 56, all-time high

The average age of homebuyers in the United States reached an all-time high of 56 years in 2024, up from 49 in 2023, according to the National Association of Realtors. Recorded from July 2023 to July 2024, the average age of first-time buyers also rose from 35 to 38, and from 58 to 61 for repeat buyers. NAR released its annual housing market report on Monday, highlighting that while homebuyers’ ages hit historic highs, the first-time homebuyer market share hit a historic low of 24%. Prior to 2008, according to NAR, the historical norm of first-time buyers was 40%. Also noted in 2024 is a record-high 26% of buyers paying for their homes in cash. “The U.S. housing market is split into two groups: first-time buyers struggling to enter the market and current homeowners buying with cash,” said Jessica Lautz, NAR deputy chief economist and vice president of research.  NAR found that 73% of recent homebuyers did not have a child under the age of 18 in their home – the highest share recorded. “First-time buyers face high home prices, high mortgage interest rates and

Lakers star Anthony Davis hurts left ankle in loss to Pistons, another blow for oft-injured center

DETROIT (AP) — Lakers star Anthony Davis injured his left ankle late in Los Angeles’ loss to the Detroit Pistons on Monday night. “Landed on the spot that’s been killing me,” the NBA’s leading scorer said softly after Detroit’s 115-103 victory. Davis went up for a layup and after being fouled by Pistons center Jalen Duren, he tumbled down to the court and grabbed his left ankle. “I’ve been managing it since last summer,” he said. Davis stayed in the game and continued to score, finishing with 37 points a game after he had a season-high 38 points in a win at Toronto. The 31-year-old Davis is scoring a league-high 32.6 points, coming off an outstanding season in which the oft-injured center played in a career-high 76 games. Two hours before tipoff in Detroit, he was one of two Lakers warming up with shooting drills. “He’s a pro’s pro,” Lakers coach JJ Redick said. “There’s a reason why he’s had the career he’s had and why he’s going to be in the Hall of Fame. It’s not just because of raw talent, but because he’s

U.S., Europe investigating devices detonated at DHL air cargo hubs

Nov 4: CBS News 24/7, 1pm ET Nov 4: CBS News 24/7, 1pm ET 45:26 U.S. and European law enforcement agencies are working together to investigate whether incendiary devices detonated in July at DHL logistics hubs in Germany and the U.K. were part of a larger operation directed by Russian Intelligence services (in particular, the GRU — Russian military intelligence), the highest level of the Russian government or by outside individuals acting in the interests of Russia, a source familiar with the matter said. Officials are working to determine whether the larger operation was to place similar devices on aircraft servicing the U.S. and U.S. allies. The Wall Street Journal first reported the alleged plot targeting U.S. aircraft. The 2025 Homeland Threat Assessment published at the end of October said the U.S. continues to be concerned about threats to the aviation and air cargo systems, including the “potential use of the air cargo supply chain to ship concealed dangerous and potentially deadly items.” DHL said in a statement that it was aware “of two recent incidents involving shipments in our network. We are fully cooperating with the

Real Estate Consultant Faces Sentencing in LA City Hall Pay-to-Play Scheme

A real estate development consultant is set to be sentenced Tuesday for his role in the pay-to-play scheme at City Hall tied to now-imprisoned ex-City Councilman José Huizar’s approval of large building projects in downtown Los Angeles. George Chiang, of Granada Hills, pleaded guilty in June 2020 to one federal count of conspiring to violate the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization statute, which carries a sentence of up to 20 years behind bars. Because of his cooperation, Chiang is expected to receive a far lighter penalty when sentenced by U.S. District Judge John Walter. Chiang was the second defendant to plead guilty in the wide-ranging federal criminal probe of City Hall corruption. He will also be the second defendant in the Huizar case to be sentenced this week. On Monday, longtime lobbyist and former City Hall official Morrie Goldman was sentenced to six months’ home detention as part of a probationary sentence. Goldman pleaded guilty to conspiring to commit bribery and honest services mail fraud, and cooperated in the investigation. The central figure in the case, Huizar, is serving a 13-year prison sentence for accepting

Puerto Rico holds general election that promises to be historic

By DÁNICA COTO, Associated Press SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Puerto Rico is holding elections that will be historic regardless of which of the top two gubernatorial candidates wins. If Jenniffer González of the pro-statehood New Progressive Party wins Tuesday’s election, it will mark the first time in the island’s history that the party secures three consecutive terms. If Juan Dalmau, who is running for Puerto Rico’s Independence Party and Citizen Victory Movement, wins, it will be the first win for a candidate not representing either of the two main parties that have dominated the island’s politics for decades. Abortion is on the ballot in nine states and motivating voters across the US

By Geoff Mulvihill and Christine Fernando, Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — Voters in nine states are deciding whether their state constitutions should guarantee a right to abortion, weighing ballot measures that are expected to spur turnout for a range of crucial races. Passing certain amendments in Arizona, Florida, Missouri, Nebraska and South Dakota likely would lead to undoing bans or restrictions that currently block varying levels of abortion access to more than 7 million women of childbearing age who live in those states. The future legality and availability of abortion hinges not only on ballot measures, as policies could shift depending on who controls Congress and the presidency. Same with state governments — including legislatures that pursue new laws, state supreme courts that determine the laws’ constitutionality, attorneys general who decide whether to defend them and district attorneys who enforce them. If all the abortion rights measures pass, “it’s a sign of how much of a juggernaut support for reproductive rights has become,” said Mary Ziegler, a professor at the University of California Davis School of Law and an expert on the history of reproductive rights in

Teen dies after being hit by car in San Marcos Halloween morning

SAN MARCOS, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — The San Marcos community is mourning the loss of a 16-year-old who did not survive after being hit by a car last Thursday morning, not too far from San Marcos High School where she was a student. She was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. The driver stayed on scene and cooperated. The investigation is ongoing, but drugs or alcohol are not believed to have played a role. The Hernandez family shared a GoFundMe Monday, saying Yoltzin was left brain dead and they were left in the “unimaginable position of making the heart-wrenching decision to let her go.” They also shared Yoltzin was an incredible person who was always there for the people she loved. The support from the community was evident as messages and donations poured in. Within just a few hours, the fundraiser well-surpassed its goal. Some local

Clippers surge in fourth-quarter comeback over Spurs for first win at Intuit Dome

The film session examined how the Clippers had blown double-digits leads in all of their games this season, highlighting how carelessness with the basketball played a role in four losses. Maintain your leverage, Clippers coach Tyronn Lue implored his players during the session; stop turning the ball over at such a high frequency. To Lue’s dismay, the Clippers started poorly against the San Antonio Spurs on Monday, falling behind by 26 points in the first quarter, their defense getting torched amid seven turnovers. But the Clippers didn’t relent. They picked up their defensive pressure in the second quarter, holding the Spurs to 16 points. They didn’t have a turnover in the second quarter, and they scored 34 points in the period to pull within eight of the lead at the half. Another strong quarter got the Clippers to within eight at the end of the third. Behind Norman Powell’s 23 points and Amir Coffey’s 21 points off the bench, the Clippers surged in the fourth quarter to a 113-104 win over the Spurs on Monday to snap a three-game losing streak and give the team

UCLA showcases the depth of its talent in season-opening victory over Rider

Nearly five minutes had elapsed in the second half when Lazar Stefanovic took a pass from Skyy Clark in the corner and rose for a three-pointer that extended UCLA’s massive lead in its season opener. Having barely played to that point, it was Stefanovic’s first shot of the game. Perhaps nothing better illustrated the Bruins’ offseason makeover than the mainstay from a year ago being relegated to a bit player as part of this new ensemble cast. (Gina Ferazzi / Los Angeles Times) Stefanovic didn’t need to play a starring role given the abundance of talent around him. Kobe Johnson, who took his spot in the starting lineup, was a two-way force with his scoring, passing and active defense. Tyler Bilodeau showed his dazzling offensive skill set with 10 points in a five-minute flash to start the second half. William Kyle III got the crowd going with three blocks. It was a pleasurable introduction for a new and vastly improved team Monday night at Pauley Pavilion, No. 22 UCLA rolling to an 85-50 victory over Rider. A year after his team struggled to score on

‘A real people person’: Community shocked after missing man’s body found near Santa Margarita

About a week-and-a-half after Todd Joseph Pinion was last seen in Atascadero, his body was found over the weekend in a remote area near Tassajara Creek. Atascadero police have made an arrest in the 34-year-old’s murder but are not elaborating on what led them to identify a suspect or how they located Pinion but said they did so after the initial investigation into his disappearance raised concerns. Many people who knew him were shocked to hear the news. He was one of my best people,” said Gary Eberle, who employed Pinion at Eberle Winery. “I mean, he was a real people person. According to Eberle, Pinion quit the winery in 2021 and he hadn’t heard from him since. I’m absolutely amazed,” Eberle said. “I’m stunned. When we found out yesterday, it was like, what? It just made no sense.” George Sullivan lives near the area where Pinion’s body was discovered. This is a remote part of the county,” Sullivan said. “It’s all private property back here. Generally, there’s no business back here unless you live here. Tyler Stevens of Paso Robles was booked into the

Road work planned in Atascadero for the next two weeks

Approximately 15 city roads will undergo construction from November 4-15, as part of the citys Measure F-14 plans. The measure directs funds from a 0.5% sales tax to road maintenance and repair. From November 4-9, sub-grade work will begin on Carmelita Avenue, Flores Road, Hermosa Avenue, and Bella Vista Road, causing traffic delays. Work is scheduled to wrap up on several roads in southeast Atascadero including Ash, Birch, Catalpa, Cuesta, Las Lomas, Maple, Montecito, Pinewood, San Diego, San Gabriel, San Rafael, and Willow. Only minor delays are expected in this region. From November 11-15, sub-grade work will continue on Carmelita Avenue, Flores Road, Hermosa Avenue, and Bella Vista Road. Delays are expected to continue. Public Works Director Nick DeBar said these roads were selected based on their pavement condition index (PCI). Every five years we actually hire a consultant that is specialized in pavement management. They drive every road in town 150 miles. They evaluate all the roads. They denote the quantity of distresses and types of distresses, DeBar said. Officials then input that data into a software program called Streetsaver. We actually program monies
