Naomi Campbell banned from running U.K. charity over “serious misconduct”

September 27, 2024 / 11:05 AM EDT / AFP London — Former supermodel Naomi Campbell has been barred from running a charity after an inquiry found funds raised by an organization she founded was spent on spa treatment and room service charges. The inquiry into Fashion for Relief, released Thursday, identified “multiple instances of misconduct,” including use of charity money to pay for a five-star hotel stay for Campbell in the south of France. The finding by the U.K. Charity Commission means Campbell, 54, has now been disqualified from running a charity in Britain for five years. Two other trustees also received bans. The watchdog probe found that between April 2016 and July 2022, only 8.5% of Fashion for Relief’s overall expenditure went on grants to charities. How much would a $20,000 home equity loan cost per month now that rates are cut?

We may receive commissions from some links to products on this page. Promotions are subject to availability and retailer terms. The monthly costs of a home equity loan will drop now that interest rates have been reduced. chavalit0777/Getty Images Home equity borrowing has traditionally been one of the cheaper ways to access large sums of cash. And this cost-effectiveness has been particularly pronounced in recent years due to interest rates surging on everything from mortgages and personal loans to credit cards, which are now hovering near a record 23%, on average. However, home equity loans and home equity lines of credit (HELOCs) are still in the single digits . Now, with a major interest rate cut already issued earlier in September, and potential other cuts being discussed for November and December, they could become even cheaper. Currently, home equity loans are less expensive than HELOCs. And they come with the added advantage of a fixed interest rate , so borrowers can easily determine their exact monthly costs. But what would a $20,000 home equity loan cost per month now that interest rates have been cut?

Soar over LA traffic in an air taxi

A vision from The Jetsons seems to be one step closer to reality. OK, so it’s not exactly a flying car, but it’s pretty close. A California startup named Joby Aviation is developing an all-electric air taxi that would be used in the skies above cities worldwide. Recently, they had their aircraft on display at The Grove in Los Angeles for folks to take a look at. The most unique part is that it can take off and land vertically, but it flies like a plane. “It frees you from the traffic in a way that you just can’t right now with any other technology,” explained Joby Chief Product Officer Eric Allison, who was really enthusiastic about the potential of it all. The fully electric aircraft can cruise at 200 miles an hour and has a range of about 100 miles. Its propellers point up for takeoff and switch forward for cruising. Engineers worked to make it operate as quietly as possible, which is important if they want cities to embrace yet another buzzy thing flying above their heads. “It can fly really quietly. So

After four years, ‘Riverside Women Creating Change’ has been published

“Like many other projects in Riverside, this book was Jane Block’s idea.” These are the opening words from Inlandia’s latest publication, “Riverside Women Creating Change.” Several years in the making, this new groundbreaking book includes oral interview transcripts of women in the city of Riverside, women who’ve worked hard to lift each other up, to build equity, support initiatives, and strengthen community. I’ve written about this project before. Finally, after four years, it’s here. In the time it’s taken to produce the book, some of the women have gone to join the ancestors: Ofelia Valdez-Yeager, Jennifer Vaughn-Blakely, Nancy Takano. There’s no time like the present to get things done. Jane Block herself just celebrated her 95th birthday. “Riverside Women Creating Change” is the Inlandia Institute’s latest publication. (Courtesy of Inlandia Institute) “Dead bodies hadn’t been all that common at Boy Scout Camp Matulia, so Harry Vincent quickly became the focus of scuttlebutt.” This is the opening gambit of “Scouts’ Honor” by Carlos Cortés, a debut novelist at the tender age of 90. Carlos may be best known as professor emeritus of history at UC Riverside

Israel’s Netanyahu, at UN, says he came to refute lies he heard there this week from other leaders

NEW YORK — His leadership strained by conflicts on two fronts, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told world leaders at the United Nations on Friday that his nation will “continue degrading Hezbollah” until it achieves its goals along the Lebanon border, further dimming hopes for an internationally backed cease-fire to halt the spiral into an all-out regional war. He said his government would no longer tolerate daily rocket fire from the area. “Israel has every right to remove this threat and return our citizens to their home safely. And that’s exactly what we’re doing … we’ll continue degrading Hezbollah until all our objectives are met,” Netanyahu said. “Just imagine if terrorists turned El Paso and San Diego into ghost towns … How long would the American government tolerate that?” he said, shaking his fist in emphasis. “Yet Israel has been tolerating this intolerable situation for almost a year. Well, I’ve come here today to say: Enough is enough.” Netanyahu, armed with visual aids as he has been in the past, defended his nation’s response to the Oct. 7, 2023, attacks by Hamas on Israel that

SOHO, Manhattan — New York’s Le Botaniste is a restaurant that specializes in plant-based food but promises doesn’t skimp on flavor. Le Botaniste started in Belgium before its five locations opened in New York City. “My wife and I decided to take a whole career change 12 years ago and started from scratch here in New York. This is where I met Alain, the founder of this place, my partner, who really created that idea of the vegetable side of it and I grew into it,” said co-founder Laurent Francois said. “Alain is the creative genius behind the concept. He’s been traveling all around the world for his other baby which is called Le Pain Quotidian. He was ‘missing vegetables when I am traveling.’ Vegetables are always the side dish and I really want to do something vegetable-focused, because it’s not just good for you, it’s good for the planet,” he added. Their goal is to provide different taste palates.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams arrives at court in illegal-contributions case

NEW YORK — New York City’s embattled mayor, Eric Adams, arrived at a federal courthouse Friday morning to be arraigned on charges that he accepted illegal campaign contributions and free overseas trips from people looking to buy his influence in city government. Adams gave a thumbs up but did not pause to speak to reporters as he headed into the Manhattan court, flanked by his own police security. He was scheduled to appear before Magistrate Judge Katharine Parker at noon. An indictment unsealed Thursday accused the Democrat of taking a variety of improper gifts from Turkish officials and businesspeople, including free hotel stays and deeply discounted airline tickets to destinations including France, China, Sri Lanka, India, Hungary, Ghana and Turkey. In return, prosecutors said, Adams did favors for his patrons. That included helping Turkey get fire department approvals to open a new diplomatic tower in Manhattan, despite concerns about its fire safety system, prosecutors said. Adams says he is innocent. His lawyer has said it was neither unusual nor improper for a government official to accept some travel perks. The mayor has denied ever knowingly

A billionaire’s son and his graffiti-scarred mansions roiling Hollywood Hills

With its shattered windows and cartoonish graffiti, the mansion on Mulholland Drive sits like a gaping wound in the Hollywood Hills. Broken glass spills out onto the narrow hillside road where tourist buses and others slow down to gawk at the mansion that sits like a colorful disaster. “We’ve become known for the graffiti mansion,” a neighbor said, who asked for anonymity over privacy concerns. “It’s so embarrassing to have this in the heart of the Hollywood Hills.” The owner of the mansion issued a formal apology Thursday to his neighbors and the city of Los Angeles after The Times contacted his attorney about the neighbors’ complaints. The Mulholland Drive home is one of two homes owned by 40-year-old TV and film producer John Powers Middleton. “What’s happened to the two properties I own is unacceptable, and no matter what caused it, I own the houses,” Middleton said in his first statement since his homes gained national attention. “Given the persistence of the numerous trespassers, it’s a struggle.” He explained that his private security and property managers at his properties were overwhelmed by trespassers and
