Rams win wild West game in Seattle as Demarcus Robinson catches second TD in overtime

SEATTLE —  Sluggishly streaking in Seattle. That’s what the Rams did Sunday. They won their third game in a row, and accomplished it with a less-than-inspiring but wholly effective 26-20 overtime victory over the Seahawks before 68,632 at Lumen Field. Matthew Stafford’s touchdown pass to receiver Demarcus Robinson ended a game that was devoid of sustained beauty but improved the Rams’ record to 4-4. Consider: Rams star receiver Puka Nacua was ejected for punching a Seahawks player after an interception. Rams receiver Demarcus Robinson (15) reacts after scoring a touchdown past the Seahawks Riq Woolen (27). He also caught the deciding 39-yard touchdown pass in overtime. (Lindsey Wasson / Associated Press) Officials called 20 penalties, eight against the Rams. The Rams gave up two touchdown passes in the final minute of the first half, right tackle Rob Havenstein left the game because of an injury, the Seahawks blocked a punt and the Rams converted only three of 13 third downs. And they still won. “What a unique, weird game that was,” coach Sean McVay said. That could just as well describe the first half of the

According to the El Monte Police Department, the man showed up at the woman’s place of work in the 10300 block of Lower Azusa Road just before 6 p.m. Saturday. Red Flag warnings issued in Southern California for high winds, dangerous fire conditions

Red Flag warnings have been issued in Southern California on Sunday evening ahead of strong Santa Ana winds and low humidity, setting the stage for dangerous fire conditions. The National Weather Service (NWS) said the warnings will go into effect at 7 p.m. on Sunday until 6 p.m. on Monday across portions of Los Angeles and Ventura counties. “A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now, or will shortly,” wrote NWS in a Sunday afternoon update. “Use extreme caution with anything that can spark a wildfire.” Residents can expect wind gusts as high as 60 mph in the northern areas of the San Fernando Valley. In dash across Michigan, Harris contrasts optimism with Trump’s rhetoric without uttering his name

By DARLENE SUPERVILLE, ISABELLA VOLMERT and BILL BARROW, Associated Press EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Two days out from Election Day, Kamala Harris dashed through four stops across battleground Michigan on Sunday without uttering Donald Trump’s name, while urging voters not to fooled by the GOP nominee’s disparagement of the electoral system that he falsely claims is rigged against him. The vice president said she trusts the upcoming vote tally and urged voters, “in particular people who have not yet voted to not fall for this tactic, which I think includes suggesting to people that if they vote, their vote won’t matter.” At a Michigan State University rally, Harris got a rousing response when she asked who had already voted and then gave students another job – to encourage their friends to cast ballots in a state that allows Election Day voter registration. And instead of her usual speech riffs about Trump being unstable, unhinged and out for unchecked power, Harris sought to contrast her optimistic tone with the darker message of the Republican opponent she did not name. Israel says it carried out ground raid in Syria

November 3, 2024 / 9:53 PM EST / AP How the election could affect Israel How the election could affect Israel 02:09 The Israeli military said Sunday it has carried out a ground raid into Syria, seizing a Syrian citizen involved in Iranian networks. It was the first time in the current war that Israel announced its troops operated in Syrian territory. Israel has carried out airstrikes in Syria multiple times over the past year , targeting members of Lebanon’s Hezbollah and officials from Iran, the close ally of both Hezbollah and Syria. But it has not previously made public any ground forays into Syria. The Israeli military said the seizure was part of a special operation “that took place in recent months,” though it did not say exactly when it occurred. Syria did not immediately confirm the announcement, but a pro-government Syrian radio station, Sham FM, reported Sunday that Israeli forces carried out a “kidnapping operation” over the summer targeting a man in the south of the country. Israel has waged an escalating campaign of bombardment in Lebanon for the past six weeks, as

Boat carrying 6 people goes missing while crabbing in Sonoma

UPDATE Nov. 3, 8:45 p.m.: The U.S. Coast Guard suspended its search for the four remaining boaters on Sunday evening “pending the development of new information,” according to the agency. “The decision to suspend a search is always difficult to make and never done lightly,” U.S. Coast Guard Chief Warrant Officer Michael Zapawa said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the missing boaters during this incredibly difficult time.” ORIGINAL: Authorities are searching for survivors after a boat with reportedly six people aboard went missing Nov. 2 off the coast of Sonoma near Bodega Bay. So far, one person has been found dead and another was rescued and received medical treatment. The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office received a call Saturday night for a recreational boat that was overdue and whose occupants were last heard from around 3 p.m. that day. A cell-phone ping placed it in the area of Carmet Beach, just north of Bodega Bay, the sheriff’s office said Sunday on Facebook. The 21-foot white Bayliner reportedly had six occupants — three adults and three juveniles — and had

Harris, Obamas and voting rights leaders work to turn out Black voters in run-up to Election Day

By MATT BROWN and FREIDA FRISARO, Associated Press MIAMI (AP) — Concerts and carnivals hosted at polling precincts. “Souls to the Polls” mobilizations after Sunday service. And star-studded rallies featuring Hollywood actors, business leaders, musical artists and activists. Such seemingly disparate efforts all have a single goal: boost Black voter turnout ahead of Election Day. How Black communities turn out in the 2024 election has been scrutinized due to the pivotal role Black voters have played in races for the White House, Congress and state legislatures across the country. Vice President Kamala Harris, who if elected would be the second Black president, has made engaging Black voters a priority of her messaging and policy platform. Meanwhile, former president Donald Trump has sought to make inroads with Democrats’ most consistent voting bloc with unorthodox and at times controversial outreach. SF Giants’ Matt Chapman, Patrick Bailey win Gold Glove Awards

Since becoming the Giants’ president of baseball operations, Buster Posey has constantly stressed his desire to build a fundamentally sound team — a team that plays “strong defense.” Zack Minasian, the team’s new general manager, sang a similar tune during his introductory press conference. As Posey and Minasian begin building next year’s team, they won’t have to look far for two of baseball’s best defenders. Third baseman Matt Chapman and catcher Patrick Bailey were both named Gold Glove Award winners on Sunday, the first time the Giants have had multiple recipients in a single season since Posey, second baseman Joe Panik and shortstop Brandon Crawford all captured the hardware in 2016. They are the first Giants to receive the award since Crawford in 2021. “It means a lot,” Chapman said. “(Nolan Arenado) dominated the National League for a long time. Ke’Bryan Hayes won it last year. A lot of really good defensive third basemen are stacked in the National League. I was able to come over here and win it. I thought that was pretty cool to be able to get one in the American

Federal judge lets Iowa keep challenging voter rolls although naturalized citizens may be affected

By JOHN HANNA, SCOTT McFETRIDGE and MICHAEL GOLDBERG, Associated Press DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A federal judge ruled Sunday that Iowa can continue challenging the validity of hundreds of ballots from potential noncitizens even though critics said the effort threatens the voting rights of people who’ve recently become U.S. citizens. U.S. District Judge Stephen Locher, an appointee of President Joe Biden, sided with the state in a lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union in the Iowa capital of Des Moines on behalf of the League of Latin American Citizens of Iowa and four recently naturalized citizens. The four were on the state’s list of questionable registrations to be challenged by local elections officials. The state’s Republican attorney general and secretary of state argued that investigating and potentially removing 2,000 names would prevent illegal voting by noncitizens. GOP officials across the U.S. have made possible voting by noncitizen immigrants a key election-year talking point even though it is rare. Their focus has come with former President Donald Trump falsely suggesting that his opponents already are committing fraud to prevent his return to the

Rep. Eric Swalwell files claim against Pamela Price after ‘defamatory statements’

California Congressman Eric Swalwell has filed a government tort claim against Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price, who is facing a recall effort, in the wake of alleged “defamatory statements.” Joseph Goethals, of Burlingame’s Goethals & Stone, PC, said on Sunday that he filed the tort claim in Alameda County. The claim is a formal requirement before launching an actual lawsuit. Alameda County now has 30 days to respond, said Goethals, either saying it accepts the claim and will compensate Swalwell or reject the claim and possibly see a defamation lawsuit filed against it in state court. “There have been false allegations made intentionally by Pamela Price,” Goethals said. “She is retaliating because of the congressman’s endorsement of the recall effort. This is an attempt to distract people from her gross incompetence that is putting Alameda County residents in danger.” The D.A.’s media representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment Sunday. Swalwell, who represents California’s 14th congressional district, has been a vocal critic of Price, whose recall effort goes before voters on Nov. 5. After the congressman held a press conference in

How the Lakers’ D’Angelo Russell helped get Max Christie back on track

TORONTO —  The play was set in motion more than an hour before tip off Friday night in Canada, Lakers guards D’Angelo Russell and Max Christie strategizing on one side of the team’s locker room as they got ready for the Raptors. Through the first two weeks of the season, Christie had struggled. “I’m just playing robotically,” he told people. In his third season, now with a real role as the first player consistently off the bench, a lot of the momentum he had built over the summer and preseason was slipping away under a pile of missed shots and defensive uncertainty. Russell saw a window to do a little something about it. The two players talked about how when Christie checked in later that night, Russell would try to break down a defender off the dribble, allowing for Christie to quickly cut backdoor for a layup. It was prophetic. On the first possession after Christie checked in midway through the first quarter, Russell dribbled with his left toward Christie in the corner. And just like they spoke about, Christie cut hard toward the rim. Russell
