The disappearance of 14-year-old Binyamin Achimair sparked attacks by Israeli settlers on Palestinian villages on Friday and Saturday. On Friday, one Palestinian was killed and 25 others were wounded in the attack on al-Mughayyir village, Palestinian health officials said. On Saturday, Israeli troops delayed for several hours the ambulance carrying the 26-year-old man’s body for burial, witnesses said. Dozens of Israeli settlers returned to the village’s outskirts on Saturday, burning 12 homes and several cars. The Palestinian Health Ministry said three people from the village were injured, one critically. Border police fired tear gas toward villagers who gathered, trying to disperse them. In the nearby village of Douma, Israeli settlers set fire to several homes, according to Wafa, the official

Here’s what to know about street closures ahead of this year’s Grand Prix of Long Beach

The 49th annual Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach has nearly arrived. That means a couple of things: On the one hand, downtown Long Beach will essentially be one giant party from Friday to Sunday, April 19-21. But on the other, navigating the area in your car will be a challenge. And not just during the three-day event — but for a few days before and the day after. Staggered street closures, in fact, will begin on Wednesday, April 17, with some remaining closed until Monday, April 22. Here are the streets to avoid over the next week. Wednesday, April 17 All side streets leading into the Grand Prix’s circuit off Shoreline Drive and Seaside Way will close at 4 a.m. A few hours later, at 7 a.m., the northbound Queensway Bridge off-ramp and southbound Queensway Bridge on-ramp for Shoreline Drive will also shut down, along with Aquarium Way south of Shoreline Drive and westbound Shoreline Drive generally. At 3 p.m., Shoreline Drive eastbound from Broadway to Ocean Boulevard will also close. Pine Avenue, according to a recent city news release, will stay open to

Former Daly City police officer facing child abuse, firearm charges; accused of slapping daughter

A newly-hired Daly City police officer was arrested after prosecutors allege he slapped his 4-year-old daughter on the face on multiple occasions over the past year, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office. Jacob Fine, 38, faces two counts of misdemeanor child abuse after prosecutors say his daughter showed up to preschool with visible marks on her face, allegedly from being hit, the district attorney’s office said. The girl also claimed that Fine did the same thing in May 2023, prosecutors alleged. Fine also faces a felony weapons charge after authorities said they found a Daniels Defense DDM4 assault-style rifle in his home, which had been illegally modified and included a laser on it. The rifle was allegedly found when authorities came to Fine’s house to serve an emergency protective order. Fine had recently been hired by the Daly City Police Department when the allegations surfaced. His police officer certification is now listed as being suspended on the website of California’s Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training. The Daly City Police Department issued a press release Friday saying that Fine was “not

Alameda County had $77.8 million in black-market marijuana seized last year — the most in California

Growing and selling marijuana on the black market remains a lucrative business in California — long after voters approved recreational pot sales and use in 2016. But state enforcement officials have kept busy trying to dismantle illicit production to better support legal ventures. Roughly $53.6 million in illegal cannabis was seized within the first three months of 2024, according to an April 11 report from the state Department of Fish and Wildlife. Between January 1 and March 31, the Governor’s Unified Cannabis Enforcement Taskforce seized 31,866 pounds of unlicensed cannabis and eradicated 54,137 unlicensed cannabis plants. Agents served a total of 18 search warrants statewide, including two in Alameda County. Since its inception in late 2022, the taskforce has gleaned more than $371 million in unlicensed cannabis and 400,000 illicit plants, after serving upward of 230 search warrants. During its first full calendar year of operation during 2023, the estimated value of cannabis seized in Alameda County exceeded $77.8 million — the highest of any California county, followed by Siskiyou, Mendocino, Los Angeles and Kern counties. Audit: San Jose failed to adequately track $300 million in homelessness spending

Over the past three years, San Jose has failed to consistently track the more than $300 million spent to fight homelessness and cannot adequately ensure that the money is helping to alleviate the crisis, according to a much-anticipated state audit. The financial audit, released this week by the California State Auditor, also found that San Jose lacks clear goals for its homelessness programs and has no cohesive plan for building the affordable housing needed for its estimated 6,340 homeless residents. “The biggest conclusion that the auditors came back with is that there’s just inadequate transparency, data and information available,” said State Sen. Dave Cortese, a Democrat representing San Jose, who requested the audit in 2022 after touring a large city encampment. A pile of trash is seen at the homeless encampment near Columbus Park in San Jose, Calif., on Friday, April 12, 2024. (Dai Sugano/Bay Area News Group)  The 115-page report, which comes as public frustration continues to mount over city officials’ struggle to manage the crisis, also examined San Diego’s homelessness efforts and highlighted similar findings. It was accompanied by a broader statewide audit

Game 82: How Warriors are approaching regular season finale

At multiple points in the past couple weeks, the Warriors have peered through a window into the top of the play-in bracket, only for it to quickly slam shut. Steve Kerr admitted that losing in Dallas at the buzzer on April 5 “shifted things” for the Warriors. But even after that defeat, Golden State ripped off three straight wins to once again have the inside track at the eighth seed. A victory over the Pelicans on Friday night would’ve put the Warriors in pole position for the eighth seed — a coveted outcome because they’d have two chances to win one game. Instead, New Orleans hit 20 of their 38 attempts from 3-point land to darken the mood again at 1 Warriors Way. “It stings a lot,” Klay Thompson said of the loss that fractions their chances at avoiding the 9/10 play-in round. Entering the regular season finale, the new reality is much more calcified for the Warriors. To escape the lower tier play-in round, they must beat the Jazz and get help via losses from both the Lakers and Kings. That long-shot scenario —

Mathews: A’s deal is another winning play for West Sacramento

The Oakland A’s are baseball’s biggest losers. But their new temporary home — West Sacramento — is one of California’s greatest winners. No California city has had a better 21 st century than West Sacramento. The municipality of 54,000 people has grown in population and prosperity with striking speed, even as California has stagnated on both fronts.  The A’s will spend three years, 2025 through 2027, in West Sacramento’s minor league ballpark as they wait for a new stadium to be built in their future home, Las Vegas. Perhaps their relocation will bring West Sac, as it’s often called, more of the notice it merits, both in California’s city halls and among state policymakers. The city’s success is attributable to smart local governance, and to three paradoxes best explained in light of California peculiarities.  The first paradox: West Sac was able to grow rich because it was so poor. Across the river, Sacramento became a city in 1849, a year before California won statehood. West Sacramento didn’t incorporate until 1987. For most of the 20th century, it was an afterthought — an industrial town of

‘Run, run, run’: Chaos at a Sydney mall as 6 people stabbed to death, and the suspect fatally shot

SYDNEY (AP) — A man stabbed six people to death at a busy Sydney shopping center Saturday before he was fatally shot, police said, with hundreds fleeing the chaotic scene, many weeping as they carried their children. Eight people, including a 9-month-old, were injured. New South Wales police said they believed a 40-year-old man was responsible for the Saturday afternoon attack at the Westfield Shopping Centre in Bondi Junction, in the city’s eastern suburbs and not far from the world-famous Bondi Beach. They said they were not able to name him until a formal identification had taken place but that they weren’t treating the attack as terrorism-related. The man was shot dead by a police inspector after he turned and raised a knife, New South Wales Assistant Police Commissioner Anthony Cooke told reporters. “This all happened very, very quickly — the officer that was in the vicinity attended on her own, was guided to the location of the offender by people who were in the center,” he said. “She took the actions that she did saving a range of people’s lives.” The attack at the

‘I’m gonna O.J. you’: How the Simpson case changed perceptions — and the law — on domestic violence

It wasn’t long after the televised spectacle of O.J. Simpson fleeing a phalanx of police cars in a slow-moving white Ford Bronco on June 17, 1994, that batterers across Los Angeles adopted a bone-chilling new threat. I’m gonna O.J. you. “We all heard it working with our clients,” said Gail Pincus, executive director of the Domestic Abuse Center in Los Angeles. “I heard it directly from the abusers. It was a form of intimidation, of silencing and getting compliance from their victims.” Abuse survivors, meanwhile, flooded rape and battery hotlines and shelters, telling advocates: I don’t want to be the next Nicole. The phone “was almost off the hook,” said Patti Giggans, executive director of Peace over Violence, then called the Los Angeles Commission on Assaults Against Women. “We were overloaded.” “People were reaching out for help; they wanted to know, ‘Could that be me? Could that happen to me?’” she said. “It was a revelation that somebody could die.” For the American public, the slayings of Simpson’s ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ronald Goldman were practically inescapable in those days. An estimated

Letters to Sports: Bidding farewell to Caitlin Clark, NCAA tournaments

April 13, 2024 4:30 AM PT 1 South Carolina is an amazing undefeated national championship team. The NCAA not awarding Most Outstanding Player in the tournament to Caitlin Clark is a travesty. It was a noble gesture by coach Dawn Staley to recognize Clark as a “GOAT of our sport” in her postgame interview. Brad Kearns Stateline, Nev. :: Obviously, South Carolina was too big, too deep, and too well-coached for even the great Caitlin Clark to overcome. After an impressive 18-point first quarter, she virtually disappeared with only 12 points for the rest of the game. And, in the closing minutes, the Hawkeyes were only six points down and in striking distance of a miraculous comeback. But, instead of Clark putting her team on her back and taking them home, she all but sealed the victory for South Carolina with several turnovers and blown layups. While she may indeed be the projected “Steph Curry“ of the WNBA, that was not a GOAT-like performance in her final college game.
