2 visitors captured on video destroying ancient rock formations at Lake Mead

By Elizabeth Wolfe , CNNWire Monday, April 15, 2024 4:46PM Two visitors at Lake Mead National Recreation Area were captured on video destroying ancient rock formations. Two visitors at Lake Mead National Recreation Area were captured on video destroying ancient rock formations and park rangers are seeking the public’s help in identifying the suspects. Video shows two visitors who scaled towering russet-colored rock formations along the park’s Redstone Dune Trail and were shoving wide slabs of sandstone to the ground. A young girl screams as the stone topples and crumbles to dust. Damage to the federally-protected formations, which were shaped over time out of 140 million-year-old sand dunes, is irreversible. Recreation area spokesperson John Haynes called the destruction “appalling.” “Why on earth would you do this to this area that’s so beautiful? It’s one of my favorite places in the park and they’re up there just destroying it. I don’t understand that,” Haynes told CNN affiliate KVVU. The video was taken the evening of April 7, according to KVVU. Park rangers urged anyone who was on the trail at the time or who may have

Tesla to slash more than 10% of its global workforce

Tesla Inc. is laying off more than 10% of its workforce, Chief Executive Elon Musk wrote in an email to staff. Musk cited job overlap and the need to reduce costs, estimating that the layoffs would affect 14,000 employees, according to the email sent late Sunday. “As we prepare the company for our next phase of growth, it is extremely important to look at every aspect of the company for cost reductions and increasing productivity,” Musk wrote in the email viewed by Bloomberg News. “As part of this effort, we have done a thorough review of the organization and made the difficult decision to reduce our headcount by more than 10% globally. There is nothing I hate more, but it must be done.” The reduction comes as the Austin, Texas-based car maker and its rivals contend with less demand for electric vehicles in a crowded field. Although Tesla moved its headquarters from California to Texas in 2021, it still operates a massive factory in Fremont. It is one of the largest manufacturing sites in the state. In January, Tesla reported disappointing fourth-quarter earnings that included

Q&A: Yes, Trump could be elected president as a convicted felon

WASHINGTON —  Former President Trump made history last year as the first of the nation’s chief executives to be indicted for a crime. This week, he will add another chapter — becoming the first former president to stand trial on criminal charges. And later this year, he could top even that if he becomes the first candidate with a criminal record to win the presidency. Here’s a look at the unprecedented legal questions Trump’s situation presents. Yes. There’s nothing in the Constitution or federal law that prevents a felon from holding the nation’s highest office. While many federal employees would not be hired if they had a felony conviction on their record, the Constitution sets only a few bare-bones requirements for the chief executive. “No Person except a natural born Citizen…shall be eligible to the Office of the President,” it says. While today’s voters worry about candidates who are too old, the men who wrote the 1787 document sought to screen out those who were too young or lived abroad. A president must have “attained the age of 35 years and been 14 years a resident

Boban Marjanovic wanted Clippers fans to ‘eat mor chikin’ for free, so he missed foul shot

No Kawhi Leonard. No Paul George. No James Harden. No way of helping or hurting their playoff status. Already locked into the No. 4 seed in the Western Conference playoffs, the Clippers gave their stars the day off during the regular-season finale against the Houston Rockets on Sunday at Crypto.com Arena. But a former Clipper gave the fans in L.A. something to cheer about in the fourth quarter — and that something was free sandwiches from Chick-fil-A. The Rockets, who had already been eliminated from postseason contention, held an eight-point lead when popular center Boban Marjanovic stepped to the line for a pair of free throws with 4 minutes 44 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. Marjanovic’s miss on his first attempt drew an unusually enthusiastic response from the crowd, and the 7-foot-4 player seemed to understand why. The Clippers and Chick-fil-A run a “Fowl Shot Promotion” in which fans at the arena receive free chicken sandwiches if an opposing player misses back-to-back free throws in the fourth quarter. Kind-hearted soul that he is, Marjanovic smiled, nodded, pointed at himself multiple times and seemed to

Southern California to finally enjoy a stretch of dry weather

After another wet weekend, Southern California will finally get a stretch of dry weather and several days of sunny skies.  “The next seven days are looking real good, maybe even the next 10 days, KTLA Meteorologist Henry DiCarlo said Monday.  Saturday and Sunday brought us another winter-type storm with cold and blustery air to go along with the rain, Henry said. Iconic L.A.-based show Melrose Place reboot in the works The weekend storm brought half an inch to an inch of rain to most parts of Los Angeles County, including .54 inches to downtown Los Angeles, .75″ in Beverly Hills, .95″ in Northridge and .62″ in Pasadena, according to the National Weather Service. The low-pressure system that brought the rain will now travel toward Colorado allowing high pressure to move in over our region. How do U.S. stamp prices compare with postage costs in other countries?

By Kate Gibson Edited By Alain Sherter April 15, 2024 / 1:09 PM EDT / CBS News Portraitist Michael Deas and the art of postage stamps Portraitist Michael Deas and the art of postage stamps 04:22 Americans who are frustrated with the ever rising cost of postage may be surprised to learn that mailing a first-class letter costs significantly less in the U.S. than in other parts of the world. The U.S. Postal Service — which has already raised the price of stamps twice this year, bringing the cost of sending first-class mail to 73 cents — tried to cushion word of the latest increase by noting that postage costs at home “remain among the most affordable in the world.”  It’s a safe assumption that the Postal Regulatory Commission will approve the sixth price hike since January 2021, with the five-cent increase then schedule to take effect on July 14. Still, folks may not realize what a relative bargain postage in the U.S. is, at least when compared to mailing costs around the world.  The U.S. ranks No. 5 in a listing of postage costs in a

Two-car crash results in fatality on Highway 4

HERCULES — A two-car crash late Sunday on Highway 4 killed a driver, the California Highway Patrol said. The wreck in the westbound direction just east of Interstate 80 marked the second fatality of 2024 on what has been Contra Costa County’s deadliest highway the past two  years. There were 15 fatal crashes a year ago on Highway 4, resulting in the death of 18 people, and 43 fatal wrecks that killed 52 in 2022 and 2023. The CHP responded to Sunday’s crash about 11:55 p.m. In a statement, the agency said a gray Jeep Wrangler and a silver Buick Regal collided. Neither car had a passenger. The driver of the Buick died at the scene. The Jeep’s driver was not injured. Only the Jeep driver was wearing a seat belt, the CHP said. Authorities did not identify the Buick’s driver, pending notification of relatives. The CHP said it is still investigating the crash and urged any witnesses who may have been in the area before or after it occurred to contact their Contra Costa office at 320investigations@chp.ca.gov or 925-646-4980.

Alaska is ready for another record-breaking cruise season

Alaska is home to more than 30,000 grizzlies, but the state’s cruise industry is experiencing anything but a bear market as momentum of last year’s record-breaking season is expected to continue in 2024. The most-visited Alaskan port, Juneau set a new mark a year ago with 1.65 million passengers descending on the capital city during cruise season, which generally runs from April to late October. That figure from the Juneau Chamber of Commerce is a Denali-sized jump of 30 percent compared to pre-pandemic 2019. Coinciding with Alaska’s 65th anniversary of statehood, the upcoming cruise season appears to be just as robust, with 19 cruise lines sending 43 ships to the Last Frontier. Kicking things off for the second straight year is the 4,008-passenger Norwegian Bliss, which docked in rustic Skagway last week. With four mainstream-category ships homeported in either Seattle or Vancouver, Norwegian Cruise Line has nearly 100 more after that. Two competing companies have staked out even larger claims in this modern-day, maritime Alaskan gold rush. Holland America Line is sending seven premium-class ships for 141 total cruises. And at the top of the totem

San Francisco’s Micah Siva puts a plant-forward spin on Jewish dishes in new cookbook

It’s spring, and Passover begins at sundown on April 22. So it’s just in time that a new cookbook has landed from Micah Siva, the San Francisco-based Jewish chef behind the Nosh With Micah blog. Filled with recipes for the holiday and the rest of the year, too, “Nosh: Plant Forward Recipes Celebrating Modern Jewish Cuisine” (The Collective Book Studio, $35) offers an array of vegetarian and vegan-friendly dishes sure to satisfy both traditional and non-omnivorous palates. This holiday is a special one for Siva on many levels. It was during Passover a year ago that she learned she was pregnant with her first child. Now with a four-month-old baby and a one-month-old book, Siva is sharing how becoming a vegetarian as a Jewish kid in Canada and marrying into the Sephardic Jewish tradition have influenced her cooking, and why Passover is not only a religious holiday but a great chance to exercise creativity in the kitchen, too. Q. Can you tell me more about your backstory? A. I moved to San Francisco three years ago. I’m originally Canadian — we moved to the states

Robyn Dixon confirms her exit from Bravo’s ‘The Real Housewives of Potomac’

Robyn Dixon is saying good-bye to “The Real Housewives of Potomac” and is blaming Bravo for not inviting her back. The reality star confirmed her rumored departure from the Maryland-set franchise Monday on her “Reasonably Shady” podcast, telling listeners that she was fired after eight seasons on the lavish series. “Yes, I will not be returning for Season 9 of ‘The Real Housewives of Potomac,’” the 45-year-old told Gizelle Bryant, her podcast co-host and “RHOP” co-star. “It’s reality. The network did not invite me back. I was fired, for lack of better words. I will not sugar-coat the situation and say, ‘Oh I am walking away and this is a break’ or anything like this. This is a network decision.” Representatives for Bravo declined to comment Monday when reached by The Times. The Baltimore native and Embellished accessory designer was among the series’ original cast members when “RHOP” premiered in January 2016. Dixon starred in the series with Bryant, Ashley Darby, Karen Huger and former cast members Charrisse Jackson-Jordan and Katie Rost. Business owner outraged after RV encampment cleanup takes away parking

An RV encampment cleanup in December has led to new problems for business owners in Hollywood Hills.  The original cleanup took place on Dec. 6 and involved about 50 motorhomes along Forest Lawn Drive.  Deadly crash shuts down all but one lane on 101 Freeway in Los Angeles The City of Los Angeles has since painted the curbs red where the RVs used to park, preventing any civilian vehicles from parking there. A local business owner told KTLA that the shortage of parking is having a negative impact on her business and a nearby film school and that many drivers are forced to pay expensive daily rates. A stretch of Forest Lawn Drive in Hollywood Hills, CA has been designated as a no parking zone, something a local business owner says is having a negative impact. (KTLA) “If I would have known that’s how the parking was going to be when I first opened my business, I would have not opened here,” said Nancy Sexton, owner of The Muse Rooms, a coworking office space. “My clients come first, and I have a price point that’s
