Kings relish taking revenge on Warriors, pushing Golden State dynasty into uncertainty

SACRAMENTO – Sacramento Kings coach Mike Brown wasn’t in a sentimental mood after his team routed Golden State 118-94 in a do-or-die play-in game on Tuesday night.  Sure, he spent six years as an assistant from 2016 to 2022 under Steve Kerr and helped the Warriors win three titles.  And yes, his former team faces a franchise-defining offseason as the dynastic trio of Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and Klay Thompson is in jeopardy of dissolving once Thompson reaches free agency. And of course those familiar players, who already looked awfully old and slow in the blowout, will only get older and slower as they approach the back half of their 30s. Even if they do come back, making the playoffs wouldn’t be easy.  So what did Brown think of his team possibly dealing the lethal blow to what was left of the famed “Death Lineup” he once coached? He had more important things to worry about. “The reality of it is, is that it’s not my problem, and it’s not my concern,” Brown said, more focused on planning for the Pelicans and the Kings’ second

Mookie Betts continues his torrid start to lead Dodgers past the Nationals

There was a lull in early April, when he went two games without a hit and seven games without a run batted in, but other than that, Dodgers shortstop Mookie Betts has been on an opening-month rampage, one that continued with a career-high-tying five hits in Tuesday night’s 6-2 victory over the Washington Nationals. A sellout crowd of 52,718 in Dodger Stadium saw Betts hit two doubles, three singles, score twice and drive in two runs to provide a jolt to a team that had lost four of five games. Betts now is batting .388 with a 1.190 on-base-plus-slugging percentage, six homers, five doubles, 18 RBIs and 22 runs in 20 games, “He’s pretty locked in right now–it’s fun to watch,” third baseman Max Muncy said. “He’s so locked in to what he’s trying to do with his defense that I feel like that’s carrying over to his offense. He’s fully in tune with what his body’s doing right now, and I feel that’s allowing him to get the most out of what he’s trying to do on both sides of the ball.” Betts is

Unhoused residents built home on side of Southern California freeway

Among the 46,000 people in Los Angeles experiencing homelessness, there are dozens living along the Arroyo Seco next to the 110 Freeway near Highland Park.   Those living there have constructed a number of different makeshift structures, some with tents, tarps and other scrap materials, but at least one of the structures, complete with a stone wall, a walkway, a front door, electric-powered lighting and even a hammock for relaxing, stands out.   The people living in the seemingly well-kept structure did not want to speak to KTLA, and as might be expected, those living near the riverfront domicile have differing opinions on the encampment.   One woman who lives nearby told KTLA’s John Fenoglio in Spanish that unhoused residents don’t bother her, and that most of those living along the Arroyo are quiet and keep to themselves.   Neighbor Mike Ancheta does not feel the same, though he admitted some of the handiwork on the structures is impressive.   “I was just admiring the work that they’ve done,” he told KTLA. “Then, of course, you get violently attacked by these guys.”   As far

Travis Kelce To Host Prime Video Game Show

Travis Kelce will host the game show, “Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity?” on Prime Video, the streaming service announced Tuesday. The show is billed as a spinoff of “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?” which aired on Fox from 2007-09 and 2015, in syndication from 2009-11 and Nickelodeon in 2019. In the new version, an adult contestant will rely on a classroom full of celebrities from stage, screen and sports to help them answer 11 questions on a range of subjects, pulled from elementary curriculum, in an effort to win a $100,000 prize. For the final question, which will always be on the sixth-grade level, the contestant selects one celebrity to discuss the answer with before locking in. “I grew up loving game shows, and I’m excited to be following in the footsteps of so many TV icons by hosting my very first one with `Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity,”’ Kelce, the Kansas City Chiefs tight end best known as the boyfriend of pop star Taylor Swift, said in a statement. “The original show is a great success, so to be bringing

Anaheim police debut Tesla patrol cars in pilot program

The Anaheim Police Department will be introducing Tesla vehicles into their patrol fleet through a pilot program. The department said they’ve purchased six Model Y SUVs directly from Tesla. The vehicles, which are specially outfitted with the necessary equipment to become patrol vehicles, were completed by a third-party vendor called Unplugged Performance. Anaheim police said the department is facing a severe shortage of dependable and reliable patrol cars. “National supply chain issues, aging patrol vehicles, and delivery delays of newly purchased patrol cars have caused a significant vehicle shortage in the Anaheim Police Department’s fleet,” officials said. Mookie Betts and the bullpen lead Dodgers past the Nationals

Mookie Betts continued his opening-month rampage with a career-high-tying five hits, and a struggling bullpen closed the game with six scoreless innings to lead the Dodgers to a 6-2 victory over the Washington Nationals in front of a sellout crowd of 52,718 at Chavez Ravine on Tuesday night. Betts doubled twice, singled three times, scored twice and had two RBIs, and is now batting .388 with a 1.190 on-base-plus-slugging percentage, six homers, five doubles, 18 RBIs and 22 runs in 20 games, but the score would have been more lopsided if the Dodgers’ $700-million man had delivered in the clutch. Three times, Shohei Ohtani stepped to the plate with runners in scoring position, and three times the slugger swung at the first pitch, producing a 108-mph groundout to second base in the second inning, a routine grounder to second in the fourth and a fly ball to center field in the seventh. Ohtani is now one for 19 (.053) with runners in scoring position on the season, paltry numbers for a player who entered Tuesday with a .289 career average, a .618 slugging percentage, 1.036

California farming area placed on probation over declining groundwater and sinking land

SACRAMENTO —  California water regulators took the unprecedented step of cracking down on one of the state’s major farming regions for failing to take steps to curb growers’ excessive pumping of groundwater, which has sent water levels into rapid decline and is causing the land to sink. The State Water Resources Control Board voted unanimously Tuesday to place the Tulare Lake basin on “probationary” status for failing to adopt sufficient measures to address chronic overpumping. Aggressive and impactful reporting on climate change, the environment, health and science. Falling groundwater levels have caused the ground to sink as much as 6 feet in parts of the area over the last decade, and state officials have determined that a local plan for managing groundwater would allow the free fall to continue. They say that without stronger measures, hundreds of household wells are at risk of running dry. It’s the first time California officials have used their authority to intervene in a community to force stronger measures to rein in the depletion of groundwater, as required under the state’s decade-old Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA). “The goal here is

Season-low Coliseum crowd of 3,296 watch Oakland A’s fall 3-2 to St. Louis Cardinals

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Lance Lynn earned his first win for the St. Louis Cardinals in seven years, a 3-2 victory over the Athletics on Tuesday night before a season-low crowd of 3,296 at the Oakland Coliseum. Lynn (1-0) allowed two runs — one earned — and five hits in seven innings, lowering his ERA to 2.18 in four starts. The 36-year-old right-hander went 72-47 for the Cardinals from 2011-17. After pitching for five other teams, he returned to St. Louis during the offseason for an $11 million, one-year contract. “From the get-go, they weren’t going to let me try to get to two strikes or get them in a strikeout situation,” Lynn said. “So then you just mix and match early and let them have some weak contact. We had some great plays behind me. All in all, that’s a good recipe.” JoJo Romero and Ryan Helsley each got three straight outs, with Helsley earning his major league-leading seventh save in eight chances. St. Louis won its second straight over the A’s and got back to .500 at 9-9. Masyn Winn and Jordan Walker

Warriors’ season ends unceremoniously with blowout loss to Kings in play-in

SACRAMENTO — Steph Curry, Draymond Green and Klay Thompson didn’t even get a chance to spend what might be their final moments in the same uniform on the court. In a blowout play-in loss to the Kings, the dynastic trio checked out together with 2:13 left in a game that was already decided. The three legends are used to playing deep into May and June. Instead, their season ended on April 16. The Warriors were healthier and well rested. Their four future Hall of Famers had exponentially more playoff experience than the young Kings. They finished the season strong, while Sacramento stumbled. But Thompson picked a bad time to play the worst game of his career. Andrew Wiggins, who had turned around his season, registered a minus-25 in 25 minutes. Steph Curry, who ended Sacramento’s season with 50 points last spring, grinded against double and triple teams to reach 22 points. And the Warriors’ much-improved defense — led by Green — let Keegan Murray unload eight 3-pointers for a game-high 32 points. “We just couldn’t stay with them,” Steve Kerr said postgame. “They dominated us

Body pulled from East Bay estuary identified as one of two San Pablo murder victims

SAN PABLO – A body pulled from an East Bay estuary last fall has been identified as an elderly San Pablo woman that authorities believe was killed by her son-in-law. A DNA profile of the body matched that of 74-year-old Que Thi Tran, the San Pablo Police Department said Tuesday. Tran’s son-in-law, 41-year-old San Pablo resident Phuc Hong Vo, has been charged with her murder, as well as the murder of his wife, 40-year-old Tho Ngoc Ly. Ly’s body has not been recovered. Authorities on Tuesday searched an estuary in the city of Alameda, where Tran’s body was found on Sept. 30, 2023, according to police. “This is an active and ongoing investigation and the location of victim Tho Ly’s remains are not confirmed,” police said.
