Salman Rushdie reads excerpts from his new book “Knife”

April 14, 2024 / 7:33 PM EDT / CBS News The most upsetting thing about the attack The most upsetting thing about the attack for Salman Rushdie 00:55 Author Salman Rushdie spent years in hiding after Iran’s leader Ayatollah Khomeini called for his assassination in 1989, declaring Rushdie’s novel, “The Satanic Verses,” blasphemous and an insult to Islam. After 10 years Rushdie came out of hiding and moved to the United States, where he felt safe. Then, on Aug. 12, 2022, at a literary festival in Chautauqua, New York, he was attacked by a knife-wielding assailant. Rushdie was stabbed 15 times and nearly died. He lost his right eye in the attack. He has come to terms with the attempt on his life the only way he knows: by writing about it in his new book. “Knife” comes out this week. Rushdie read several excerpts from “Knife” for 60 Minutes. Why Salman Rushdie wrote “Knife” 00:24 “I would answer violence with art,” says author Salman Rushdie. He initially didn’t want to write his new book “Knife” about the attack, but he felt he needed to

Athletics use sixth-run sixth to beat Washington, win third straight series

OAKLAND — The Athletics scored six runs in the sixth inning Sunday to overcome a five-run deficit and beat the Washington Nationals 7-6 at the Coliseum. It was the third straight series win for the A’s (7-9), who took two of three from both Detroit and Texas on their last road trip. Washington fell to 6-9 with the loss. Oakland’s victory came before a crowd of 8,637 on a Little League day, the A’s second-best attendance figure of the season behind 13,522 on Opening Night. Relief pitcher Mitch Spence (1-1) picked up the win for the A’s, with Mason Miller striking out the side in the ninth on 12 pitches for his third save. Reliever Derek Law (0-1) was the losing pitcher. The Little Leaguers had plenty to keep them entertained in the sixth-run sixth. The Nationals removed starter Trevor Williams after J.J. Bleday hit a one-out double to right, sending Abraham Toro to third. Law then struck out Seth Brown before things got interesting. Third baseman Tyler Nevin singled to drive in a run, and Lawrence Butler singled to right to drive in another

Scottie Scheffler lives up to his No. 1 ranking by winning his second Masters title

AUGUSTA, Ga. —  Scottie Scheffler said all last week that he would pull out of the Masters if his expectant wife went into labor during the tournament. Instead, Scheffler delivered a second green jacket. The world’s No. 1 player was true to form Sunday, remaining steady through “Amen Corner” when the rest of his top competitors got wobbly during that brutal stretch comprising 11th, 12th and 13th holes at Augusta National. It was the second Masters victory for Scheffler since 2022, and this third win in the past four events. Last month, he won both the Arnold Palmer Invitational and Players Championship, and finished tied for second in the Houston Open. Scheffler said he never allowed himself to relax with the lead. He shot a four-under-par 68 on Sunday, won the Masters at minus-11, beating runner-up Ludvig Aberg by four strokes. “Just like any human would, your mind starts to wander a little bit out there on the golf course,” Scheffler said. “I mean, we’re out there for four or five hours at a time. You got to let your mind wander. I tried to soak

LeBron James leads Lakers to win over Pelicans, setting up rematch in NBA Play-In Tournament

The Los Angeles Lakers knew if they won their regular season finale, they would need one more victory to advance to the first round of the NBA playoffs. LeBron James ensured that L.A. finished as the No. 8 seed. The King finished with a triple-double, putting up 28 points, 11 rebounds, and 17 assists, while Anthony Davis had 30 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Lakers to a 124-108 road win over the New Orleans Pelicans. With the win, L.A. finishes as the No. 8 seed in the NBA’s Western Conference, and as a result, the same two teams will play again in New Orleans on Tuesday in the NBA Play-In Tournament. The winner of that contest will take on the defending champion Denver Nuggets in Round 1 of the playoffs. The Lakers came storming out of the gate and took command from the opening tip, building up a 70-53 lead at halftime. Although James and Davis led the charge, L.A. got some much-needed secondary scoring. Austin Reaves finished with 20 points, while guard D’Angelo Russell chipped in with 19. It was a mismatch

Multiple sideshows reported in Oakland

Multiple sideshows were reported in Oakland early Sunday morning in different parts of town. According to an Oakland Police Department press statement, the sideshows took place at around 2 a.m. near Claremont and College avenues, Alcatraz and Telegraph avenues, the 1200 block of Derby Avenue and the 700 block of Mandela Parkway. Another sideshow took place on High Street, according to KRON. Some cars were reportedly set on fire. “Gunshots were reported at many of the illegal sideshow locations,” the OPD said in a statement. “As additional officers arrived on the scene, vehicles and spectators dispersed the area.” This news organization asked OPD how many people were in the crowds, if anyone was injured, and if any arrests have been made, but has not yet received a response. The Oakland City Council passed an ordinance last year making it illegal to “organize, facilitate or promote” sideshows. Those found guilty of violating the ordinance could face misdemeanor charges and civil penalties including jailtime of six months or fines ranging from $1,000 to $5,000, with increasing penalties for repeat offenders. Those who participate in illegal sideshows could

Play-in preview: Warriors’ season on the line against the Kings

The Warriors are back in the play-in tournament, and any single loss will end their season. Despite winning their season finale over Utah, the Warriors couldn’t climb out of the No. 10 seed as the Kings and Lakers both won on Sunday, too. It’s not the fate the Warriors — winners of four championships in the past decade and with a record-breaking luxury tax bill — wanted, but it’s the fate they earned in a loaded Western Conference. Too many blown leads, a 21-20 home record and Draymond Green’s suspensions prevented them from reaching their potential. Golden State finished with more wins than last year, when it claimed the sixth seed, but its record this season was only good enough for 10th. Under the format before the play-in tournament, the Warriors (46-36) wouldn’t be in the postseason at all. There is a strong belief within the Warriors organization that they can beat any team on any given night. They have four Hall of Famers, a group of ascending young talent contributing, a defense that has rounded into shape around Draymond Green and Trayce Jackson-Davis, and

Warriors take care of Jazz in finale, brace for tough postseason path

SAN FRANCISCO — The Warriors sat both Steph Curry and Draymond Green, and still beat the lottery-bound Utah Jazz. Klay Thompson dropped 19 in the first half and 25 in 20 minutes overall. The Warriors limited his and the other veterans’ minutes and let their deep bench ride in the second half. No one in the Warriors’ playoff rotation played more than 23 minutes in a game that amounted more to a tune-up than anything. Golden State (46-36) avoided finishing the year with a losing record in Chase Center by beating the Jazz, 123-116. The win didn’t mean much in the standings, as Golden State didn’t get help elsewhere. They’re heading to Sacramento on Tuesday for a single-elimination play-in game as the 10th seed. The winner will then travel to the loser of the 7/8 game between the Pelicans and Lakers for a chance to earn a full series against the top-seeded Thunder. “I’ve got a good feeling about what’s ahead,” Steve Kerr said postgame. “I think we still have a chance to do something special. Obviously, it’s NCAA Tournament (style). You’ve got to get

Rays rough up Blake Snell in return to Tampa, take series from SF Giants

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Giants paid $62 million to add a two-time Cy Young winner to their rotation. Two-and-a-half weeks into the season, they’re still waiting for him to arrive. The Giants also committed those dollars to a pitcher with a history of slow starts and questionable command, and that is the Blake Snell who showed up again Sunday in his second start for his new team at the venue he called home for the first five years of his big-league career. His former club, the Tampa Bay Rays, had the right plan of attack against their friend-turned-foe, waiting until he found the strike zone and ambushing him on the too-infrequent occasions that he did. They chased him after four innings, 78 pitches, and seven runs, sending the Giants to their second loss, 9-4, in two Snell starts. Snell said there were “no emotions” in stepping back on the Tropicana Field mound and acknowledged he was still working out the kinks after an abbreviated spring training but that there were “no excuses.” “I’ve gotta get better,” Snell said. “We’ll get there, but definitely frustrating.”

News organizations urge Biden and Trump to commit to presidential debates during the 2024 campaign

By David Bauder | Associated Press NEW YORK — Twelve news organizations on Sunday urged presumptive presidential nominees Joe Biden and Donald Trump to agree to debates, saying they were a “rich tradition” that have been part of every general election campaign since 1976. While Trump, who did not participate in debates for the Republican nomination, has indicated a willingness to take on his 2020 rival, the Democratic president has not committed to debating him again. Although invitations have not been formally issued, the news organizations said it was not too early for each campaign to say publicly that it will participate in the three presidential and one vice presidential forums set by the nonpartisan Commission on Presidential Debates. “If there is one thing Americans can agree on during this polarized time, it is that the stakes of this election are exceptionally high,” the organizations said in a joint statement. “Amidst that backdrop, there is simply no substitute for the candidates debating with each other, and before the American people, their visions for the future of our nation.” ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox, PBS, NBC, NPR

LeBron James’ triple-double helps Lakers secure eighth place for play-in game

NEW ORLEANS —  Your eyes would tell you quickly. The Lakers, at their very best this season, have received the kind of all-around dominance from LeBron James that made him the best player in the league — a surefire ticket to the end when winning mattered most. But with 39 years on his bones and 21 seasons worth of mileage on his legs, James has had to pick his spots. On the nights when James has been able to play with his foot on the gas on both ends of the court, the Lakers have been as difficult to beat as any team. In the games when age and fatigue keep James glued to the paint, closing out on a shooter with his eyes instead of his effort, they’ve been in trouble. Sunday, in their final game of the regular season and in desperate need of a win, coach Darvin Ham had a feeling which version of James he’d get. “When we see that type of energy, it’s great,” Ham said before the game. “It lets us know — he’s pretty much always locked in, but

Clippers prepare for playoffs by resting starters in loss to Rockets

Kawhi Leonard sat on the Clippers bench Sunday once again dressed in a sweatsuit, right next to Paul George, who was next to James Harden, the team’s three stars not playing in the final regular-season game before Los Angeles heads to the playoffs. The big mystery surrounds Leonard and his status for the Clippers’ first-round series against the Dallas Mavericks that will start next weekend in Los Angeles. He didn’t play against the Rockets on Sunday because of right knee inflammation. He has missed the last eight games with knee issues. The Clippers made no assurances that Leonard will play when the series starts. “He’s not playing today,” Clippers coach Tyronn Lue said before his team’s 116-105 loss to the Houston Rockets in L.A.’s last regular-season game at Crypto.com Arena before moving to Intuit Dome next season. By the time the playoffs start for the Clippers either Saturday or Sunday, Leonard will not have played in a game in three weeks. Leonard last played against Charlotte on March 31, a game in which he had 37 minutes and had 23 points, five rebounds and four

After Blackpink, a new crop of Korean artists take on Coachella

This time last year, the five members of the K-pop group Le Sserafim were glued to the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival livestream on YouTube, watching Blackpink make history as the first Korean headliner. On Saturday afternoon, they were getting glammed up in an artist trailer all their own, hours out from making their own Coachella debut. “Coachella was something I could hardly dream of coming to, even as a spectator,” said Huh Yunjin, of the groundbreaking HYBE girl group. “We’ve watched performances like Blackpink and Billie Eilish online and were like, ‘It’d be so amazing to stand on a stage like this one day.’ ” “It’s a very famous festival in Korea as well,” added Kim Chaewon, through a translator. “For a lot of artists there, it’s a dream opportunity.” This year, that opportunity arrived for a whole new generation of Korean acts. After Blackpink’s fast ascent from newcomer to top-billed act, Coachella is already cultivating its next generation of K-pop and South Korean music more broadly. Genres always wax and wane at the fest, with classic rock and EDM giving way to

Police Seek Possible Victims of Pair Arrested in Ambush Robbery

Police are seeking potential additional victims of a man and a woman arrested in connection with an ambush robbery near Lincoln Park. According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the female suspect, 23-year-old Magdalena Gallegos, lured two victims she met on social media to an apartment in the 2900 block of North Main Street on Tuesday. Once they were inside the apartment, two male suspects — one of whom was allegedly 26-year-old Sergio Carrillo — emerged from hiding and held the victims at gunpoint while demanding their property, police said. One of the victims was struck by a handgun. The suspects were seen driving a 2008 four-door blue Chevrolet Malibu, police said. Carrillo and Gallegos were arrested Wednesday and booked on suspicion of robbery. They were both held on $100,000 bail. The third suspect remains at large. Detectives “strongly believe” the suspect have victimized other people using the exact same scheme. Anyone with information regarding the robberies or who believes they were victimized was urged to contact LAPD Detective Salas at 323-342-8956 or 323-342-8900. Calls during non-business hours and weekends should be directed to 877-527-3247.
