Judge set to hear motion to dismiss rapper Travis Scott from lawsuit over deadly Astroworld concert

By KEN MILLER Monday, April 15, 2024 12:23PM The suit was filed in the wake of the 2021 tragedy that killed 10 people and injured hundreds more at NRG Park. A judge in Texas is set to hear arguments Monday in rap star Travis Scott’s request to be dismissed from a lawsuit over the deadly 2021 Astroworld festival in Houston. Scott headlined the concert during which 10 people were killed as authorities and festival organizers responded to a massive crowd surge and tried to shut down the show. Last week, the judge dismissed lawsuits against hip-hop guest performer Drake along with several other individuals and companies involved in the show. Attorneys for Scott, whose real name is Jacques Bermon Webster II and is also known as “Cactus Jack,” write in the motion to dismiss that he is a performer and had no role in providing security or crowd management for the festival. “Performers are not expected to render special protection to the audience, nor to safeguard them from the rest of the crowd,” the motion said. “Performing artists, even those who engage in certain promotional

WNBA star Brittney Griner, wife Cherelle announce they’re expecting 1st child

By Susannah Cullinane, CNN , CNNWire Monday, April 15, 2024 10:59AM WNBA star Brittney Griner and her wife, Cherelle, are expecting their first child, the couple announced in an Instagram post on Saturday. “Can’t believe we’re less than three months away from meeting our favorite human being,” they captioned a picture of them holding hands over an ultrasound of the child, adding the hashtags, “#BabyGrinerComingSoon” and “#July2024.” Griner, 33, re-signed with the Phoenix Mercury ahead of the 2024 WNBA season earlier this month. In 2022, she spent nearly 300 days in custody in Russia after being wrongfully detained. The two-time Olympic gold-medalist – who had played in the off-season for a Russian women’s basketball team for years – was arrested at a Moscow airport in February that year after authorities found cannabis oil in her luggage. Despite her testimony that she had inadvertently packed the cannabis oil, she was sentenced to nine years in prison for drug smuggling. The US State Department deemed Griner had been wrongfully detained and after negotiations, she was released in December 2022 in a prisoner swap that involved Russian arms

Editorial: High electric bills threaten California’s clean future. This plan would help

California has some of the nation’s highest electricity rates, and power bills are rising fast. That’s a problem because it makes it harder for people to afford switching from fossil fuels to clean electric cars and appliances that are essential to combating climate change. Who wants to invest thousands of dollars in a heat pump or induction stove only to be punished with higher bills? But there’s a proposal by the California Public Utilities Commission that would ease the burden by changing the way customers of the state’s big three investor-owned utilities are billed. Rather than being charged for each kilowatt-hour with rates bulked up to cover capital costs and maintenance, electric customers would pay a modest flat fee (about $24 a month for most households) and a lower per kilowatt-hour rate. It’s a well-thought-out approach to modernizing California’s electric rates that adheres to a 2022 law requiring the commission to adopt income-based fixed rates, and does so without any onerous new income verification program as had been proposed. Change is needed because the existing rate structure used by Southern California Edison, Pacific Gas &

See the grumpy cat that had to be chiseled out from between two walls

Rather than looking relieved to be out of its precarious situation, the cat was photographed looking anything but.  Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service posted about the ordeal on Facebook, saying the calico feline was stuck “between a wall and a hard place.”  A “curious cat” had to be rescued in Lancashire, England, after getting stuck between two walls – but it looked anything but relieved once free. Why does Major League Baseball have so few Black players?

By David Downey | Contributing Writer When Major League Baseball celebrates Jackie Robinson’s historic 1947 debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers on Monday, April 15, a small number of players wearing No. 42 in his honor will be African Americans. Tony Reagins, MLB’s chief baseball development officer and the Angels’ former general manager, said the percentage of Black major leaguers is down again this season. It fell to 6.0% from 6.2% in 2023, based on opening day numbers. The percentage is one-third of what it was more than three decades ago, according to baseball demographic studies. One reason for the decline seems to be the enormous popularity of basketball and football. Hernández: Overlooked parts of Dodgers’ roster could jeopardize World Series aspirations

Now that federal investigators say they have solved the Mystery of the Missing Millions, Shohei Ohtani can focus entirely on baseball matters. Such as whether his team can actually win a World Series. These Dodgers are what they were expected to be — to a degree. Counting Ohtani, they have four of the best hitters in baseball. In Tyler Glasnow, they have a very good pitcher who can be great if he stays healthy. Those aren’t their concerns. Their problems are in the previously overlooked parts of the roster. They have an extremely top-heavy lineup. They have an unreliable bullpen. They have a shaky defense. These shortcomings are why they have dropped three of their five games against the San Diego Padres, including a 6-3 defeat on Sunday night at Dodger Stadium. The Dodgers have played one other National League team that was in playoff contention last year, the Chicago Cubs, and were beaten by them twice in a three-game series earlier this month. This isn’t to say the Dodgers won’t win their division. They should. This isn’t to say the Dodgers won’t win 100

April 15, 2024 / 6:43 AM EDT / AP Bogota, Colombia — A small boat full of decomposing corpses was spotted by fishermen off Brazil’s northeastern coast on Saturday, according to local news reports. Brazil’s Attorney General’s office said in a statement that it had dispatched a forensics team to the area to determine where the bodies and the boat came from. “Some reports say there could be up to 20 corpses” in the boat, the Attorney General’s office said in a statement. The office announced it was opening a criminal and a civil investigation into the incident. The boat was floating off the coast of the state of Para in a remote location about 185 miles from the state capital Belem.
