Despite the rain, volunteers work on many nonprofit projects at annual event in San Luis Obispo

Love SLO, an event created to bring awareness to nonprofits in our community, took place Saturday despite the rain. It was all hands on deck Saturday for the many projects needing work in the San Luis Obispo community. Mission Prep Special Olympics, Jacks Helping Hand and Woods Humane Society all had work for volunteers. Little guys running around painting bookmarks for the childrens museum and making chew toes for the humane society and cheering on the basketball players has been very cool, Tara Anderson, project leader of Love SLO said. People of all ages came to help out. “My son is here today making signs to cheer for the Special Olympians and watching him do that is wonderful and just planting those seeds of service in our kids is so important, Anderson said. Tara Anderson, her 10-year-old son and friends like Zachary Azar drew signs to cheer on the basketball teams playing on Saturday morning. I think it was fun and I think it’s been cool doing this and I definitely want to do this one again. This is fun, Azar said. Love SLO is

After loss, San Jose Sharks will finish as NHL’s last place team

SAN JOSE – The San Jose Sharks played their final home game of the season on Saturday — and the result was a familiar one for anybody who has followed the team the last two seasons. The Sharks allowed two goals to Kirill Kaprizov in just 47 seconds late in the second period, turning what had been a close game into just another home loss, as the Minnesota Wild earned a 6-2 win before an announced sellout crowd of 17,435 on Fan Appreciation Night at SAP Center. Jan Rutta and Mario Ferraro scored for the Sharks, who lost at home for the 30th time in 41 home games this season — only a slight improvement from the 33 losses they had at their west downtown arena a year ago. The one positive for the big picture crowd – the Sharks are now locked into 32nd and last place in the NHL’s overall standings, meaning they will have a 25.5% percent chance of winning next month’s NHL draft lottery. The top player available is ex-Jr. Sharks star Macklin Celebrini, who won the Hobey Baker Award as

How ‘Bluey’ special ‘The Sign’ was created: ‘It’s one of the most beautiful episodes we’ve made’

This article contains spoilers about “The Sign” episode of “Bluey.” Everyone’s favorite Australian dog family is going supersized. “The Sign,” a highly anticipated 28-minute special episode of “Bluey,” is now streaming on Disney+. While a typical episode of “Bluey” is around seven minutes long, “The Sign” is the equivalent of a two-hour movie in the “Bluey” universe. “We always said wouldn’t it be incredible if we could do three seasons and a movie,” executive producer Daley Pearson says. “We would love to do beyond that but wouldn’t that be an Everest to climb. I think this is a version of delivering on that promise. It was such a great creative challenge that we had to do it.” “Bluey” which is produced in Brisbane, Australia, by Ludo Studio (which Pearson co-founded) typically has four different animation teams who work on individual episodes. For “The Sign,” the four teams collaborated. “This is the first episode made by the whole studio,” Pearson says. “That was a big production challenge in itself.” 1 2 1. An artist at Ludo Studio. On ‘Saturday Night Live,’ Ryan Gosling can’t stop cracking up as guest host

Ryan Gosling’s third go-round as guest host of “Saturday Night Live” should have been a victory-lap party after a year’s worth of goodwill that started with his well-received “Barbie” performances, peaking with his “I’m Just Ken” number at the Oscars in March. He even showed up in last week’s Kristen Wiig-hosted episode to prime the pump. But not everything works out the way you want it to and instead of a party, Gosling’s episode found live sketch after live sketch torpedoed by the host breaking character and trying to hold back laughter. That nervous energy seemed to have infected other cast members who also couldn’t make it through pieces, most notably a News Nation sketch about the dangers of artificial intelligence that goes out of control when it’s pointed out that two audience members look a lot like the animated characters from “Beavis and Butt-Head” (Gosling and MIkey Day). Heidi Gardner, playing the host of the segment, couldn’t stop laughing every time she turned to look at one of them. Gosling first broke in the cold open, which you could blame on the hilarious returning

US Women’s Water Polo Team Defeats Australia in Irvine Exhibition

Maddie Musselman scored four goals for the second consecutive game as the U.S. women’s water polo team completed a three-game sweep of its exhibition series against Australia with a 14-6 victory Saturday at the William Woollett Aquatics Center in Irvine. The Americans never trailed as they improved to 10-0 for the year and won their 11th consecutive game dating back to last year. Three-time Olympic gold medalist Maggie Steffens opened the scoring three minutes, 17 seconds into the eight-minute first quarter on a penalty throw after Tilly Kearns, who played at USC in 2019, 2022 and 2023, fouled Rachel Fattal. The U.S. increased its lead to 2-0 46 seconds later on a goal by Kaleigh Gilchrist, who played at USC from 2010-14. Dani Jackovich, who played for Stanford from 2014-17, scored for Australia with 2:27 left in the first quarter. Musselman scored twice in the second quarter and Jordan Raney once as the Americans took a 5-2 lead at halftime. Jackovich scored Australia’s goal. All four goals came on the power play. American Jewel Romer scored the lone third-quarter goal. Musselman scored two of the

Spring rain hits Central California, causes trees and power lines to fall

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — Windshield wipers were hard at work on Saturday afternoon as the rain came down. But so were Fresno City crews. Crews were chopping down this tree that fell into some powerlines on Eighth and Lyell Street in Southeast Fresno. The branches were also leaning on top of the home’s roof. “We haven’t seen a ton of outages, but we have seen some,” PG&E spokesperson Jeff Smith said. “We’ve seen downed wires, we’ve seen some downed powerlines, and that’s a result of some the pretty significant winds we saw earlier in the afternoon.” PG&E says most of the outages from Saturday’s soaker were within the city of Fresno. During active weather like this, PG&E says it keeps an especially close eye on the rural areas. “Particularly in those mountain areas, like I mentioned, are access issues,” Smith said. “If you’ve got trees or shrubbery or things like that that are impeding our crews’ ability to access those areas, that’s always a concern.” Smith says the recent sunshine gave crews a chance to rest and prep their equipment for the rain and wind.

Gavin Stone delivers five innings of perfection in Dodgers’ win over Padres

The Dodgers and San Diego Padres weathered a 2-hour, 15-minute rain delay before beginning Saturday night’s game in Chavez Ravine under drizzly skies, 48-degree temperatures and just enough of a breeze to further chill the bones, hardly ideal conditions for a baseball game. They were nearly perfect for Gavin Stone, the right-hander who painted a five-inning masterpiece on the soggy canvas before settling for the best start of his brief career, a 6 ⅔-inning, two-run, five-hit effort that led the Dodgers to a 5-2 victory in front of a crowd of 44,582 at Dodger Stadium. Stone, a 25-year-old who was making his seventh career big league start and 11th appearance, struck out four, walked one and threw first-pitch strikes to 18 of 25 batters. Of his 88 pitches, 60 were strikes. He used his five-pitch mix — a sinker that averaged 95.3 mph, changeup (86.6 mph), four-seamer (94.5 mph), cut-fastball (91.7 mph) and curve (83.5 mph) — to induce 11 swinging strikes and 12 called strikes. “This is what can happen when you pitch with conviction,” manager Dave Roberts said. “He was on the attack

Kings defeat Ducks and extend home winning streak to eight games

The Kings won their eighth consecutive game at Crypto.com Arena on Saturday, beating the Ducks 3-1 to match the team’s longest home winning streak in more than three decades and move three points clear of idle Vegas in the battle for third place in the Pacific Division. The Kings, who finished third the last two seasons, have two regular-season games remaining, both at home. Vegas has three games left. Since the All-Star break, the Kings are an NHL-best 13-2-1 at home. “We want to play well,” said Kings interim coach Jim Hiller about the streaks. “You can play well and not win in this league; that happens on a lot of different nights. So we want to play well. “We’ll take the wins. We want to win, of course. But we just want to be feeling good, whether that’s winning or playing well and maybe not quite getting it done.” The Kings’ goals came from Pierre-Luc Dubois and Matt Roy, both in the second period, and Kevin Fiala, with less than three minutes left in the third period. Trevor Zegras accounted for the Ducks’ goal.

LAPD increasing patrols around religious sites following Iran drone strikes in Israel

The Los Angeles Police Department issued a statement on X, formerly Twitter, in response to the Iran drone strikes in Israel on Saturday. Officials say they’re paying close attention to any potential threats in L.A. as the conflict in the Middle East could lead to a larger war in the region. “We are closely monitoring the conflict between Israel and Iran and working with our federal and regional partners to ensure the safety of our communities in L.A. County,” LAPD said in a statement. “As a precaution, we are increasing patrol checks around sensitive and religious sites and engaging with our community leaders to reassure them that the LASD is taking a proactive stance. Currently, there are no specific or credible threats to L.A. County.” President Joe Biden issued a statement saying the U.S. will provide unspecified support for Israel’s defense in the Iran drone attack. Iranian officials say they sent in the drone strikes in response to Israel’s military attacking what Iran calls diplomatic facilities in Damascus, the capital of Syria. Orange County DUI driver who killed pregnant woman is sentenced to 15 years to life

An Orange County driver who pleaded guilty to fatally hitting a pregnant woman while driving under the influence of a cocktail of drugs in 2020 was sentenced on Friday to 15 years to life in prison. The Orange County district attorney’s office said Courtney Fritz Pandolfi, 44, already had multiple DUI convictions when she got behind the wheel on Aug. 11, 2020, while high on a combination of drugs, including cocaine and methamphetamine, and fatally hit 23-year-old Yesenia Aguilar. Aguilar was eight months pregnant and out walking with her husband in Anaheim when Pandolfi jumped the curb with her Jeep SUV, crashing into a metal newspaper stand before barreling toward the couple and hitting Aguilar. Prosecutors said Pandolfi continued driving an additional 347 feet without braking before her Jeep became disabled. The baby, Adalyn Rose, was delivered alive in an emergency C-section. “A beautiful little girl came into the world fighting like hell to survive the tragedy that took her own mother’s life, and the strength that little girl has shown gave her own father the will to live,” Orange County Dist. What’s at stake for Lakers in regular season finale against Pelicans

No NBA games were scheduled for Saturday before every team is in action on Sunday for the final day of the regular season. The Los Angeles Lakers have a huge showdown against the New Orleans Pelicans, with tipoff set for 12:30 p.m. in the Big Easy. There are massive postseason implications for the Lakers. If they can beat the Pelicans, they will be locked in as the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference. If L.A. is victorious, it will play either New Orleans or the Phoenix Suns in the NBA’s Play-In Tournament for the right to advance to the playoffs and take on the No. 2 seed in the first round. The benefit of a win over the Pelicans in the regular season finale for the Lakers is that they would have to win just one game to get into the playoffs. If L.A. were to lose its first Play-In game, it would have to defeat the winner of the matchup between the No. 9 and No. 10 seeds. Things get complicated for the Lakers if they lose in New Orleans on Sunday. L.A.
