Westmont ace wins classic pitcher’s duel in extra-inning CCS Division II baseball thriller

CAMPBELL – Most of the Westmont team was still congratulating Lakin Anderson for driving the game-winning ninth inning single into center field and pushing the Warriors into the Central Coast Section Division II semifinals when Mason Pound went over to Los Altos pitcher Eric Colgrove. After the two threw for a combined 17 ⅔ innings and hurled 187 pitches in a classic duel, the winning pitcher would not leave the field without expressing his profound respect for his adversary, who had collapsed in despair after the final out.  “I wanted to tell him that he pitched a great game,” Pound said. “He was one of the best pitchers we’ve faced all year. ” Pound struck out eight on 94 pitches and Colgrove allowed just six hits in 8 ⅔ innings. Both kept batters from keying in on their pinpoint fastballs by mixing in a diverse array of sliders, sinkers and curveballs. “The sinker worked well today,” Colgrove said. “I didn’t get a lot of strikeouts, but I kept them in check with that sinker.” CAMPBELL – Los Altos pitcher Eric Colgrove throws a pitch against

The stuff that Coppola’s dreams are made of: The director on building ‘Megalopolis’

By Jake Coyle | Associated Press CANNES, France — Of the many quotations and slogans that flitter through Francis Ford Coppola’s idea-stuffed, open-hearted, unabashedly optimistic “Megalopolis,” one that particularly resonates with the director is: “When we leap into the unknown, we prove that we’re free.” “That’s me making this film,” Coppola says, speaking on a hotel terrace in Cannes the day after “Megalopolis” premiered at the French festival. “To all of the studio big shots, I proved that I’m free and they’re not. Because they don’t dare leap into the unknown. And I do. That’s the only way to prove that you’re free.” Coppola pauses and then adds, with a grin. “I don’t recommend it.” “Megalopolis,” Coppola’s first film in 13 years, has been called many things since it was unveiled in Cannes. A folly. A disaster. An audacious, self-financed gamble. What it is, regardless of whether all its strange parts function smoothly together, is a colossal personal statement by one of America’s most visionary filmmakers, about having the daring to be visionary. It’s no small step but another giant leap by Coppola, 85, who

Former South Africa leader Zuma promises jobs and free education as he launches party manifesto

By Mogomotsi Magome | Associated Press JOHANNESBURG — Former South African President Jacob Zuma on Saturday lamented the high levels of poverty among black South Africans and promised to create jobs and tackle crime as he launched his new political party’s manifesto ahead of the country’s much-anticipated elections. He told thousands of supporters who gathered at Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg that his party would build factories where many people would be employed and provide free education to the country’s youth. “We want our children to study for free, especially those from poor households because the poverty we have was not created by us. It was created by settlers who took everything, including our land. We’ll take all those things back, make money and educate our children,” he said. He has also pledged to change the country’s Constitution to restore more powers to traditional leaders, saying their role in society has been reduced by giving more powers to magistrates and judges. Zuma’s uMkhonto weSizwe party, known as the MK Party, has emerged as a significant player in South Africa’s upcoming elections after it was launched in

S.F. public hospital and community clinic RNs authorize strike

Bay City News San Francisco Department of Public Health registered nurses voted last week to authorize their contract negotiations team to call a strike, passing the measure with 99.5% approval. Votes were counted on Friday after nurses voted at SF General Hospital, Laguna Honda Hospital and various clinics throughout the week. The bargaining team is still negotiating with the city to address staffing shortages and working conditions, but the authorization will allow them to call a stroke after their contract expires on June 30 if they feel the city has continued “refusing to engage seriously and in good faith on the nurses’ priorities to protect and improve patient care,” according to the press release from the union. The union claims that the San Francisco Department of Public Health used per-diem temporary part-time nurses to do the equivalent number of hours of 291 full-time RNs. The union says it presented evidence of 16,000 missed breaks and over 1,400 “assignment despite objection” forms outlining unsafe conditions. “Since negotiations began in February, the City has ignored its employees working on the frontlines of the City’s toughest public health

‘Freak of nature’: Inside Shohei Ohtani’s career-best start to his first Dodgers season

On the first day of spring training, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts began drawing a lofty parallel. Barry Bonds, Roberts said, “was the most talented player I’ve ever played with.” Shohei Ohtani, he then predicted, “probably has a chance to be the most talented player to ever play the game of baseball.” During a trip to San Francisco last week, Roberts witnessed the comparison in real life. Back in the ballpark Bonds once called home, a stadium where Roberts has seen hundreds of games as a player and manager, the Dodgers’ skipper turned his gaze skyward after a thunderous Ohtani swing. His slugger had just clubbed a home run 446 feet with a blistering 113.4-mph exit velocity. Roberts’ mind, however, could think only one thing. “That’s Barry territory,” he said of a home run that cleared the towering right-center field bleachers at Oracle Park, landing just short of a splash down in McCovey Cove. “There aren’t too many guys that can do that.” Then again, there aren’t too many players capable of having the kind of season Ohtani is having nearly 50 games in, a performance

Hollywood Remembers Dabney Coleman After Actor’s Death at 92

Dabney Coleman was being remembered fondly this weekend by fans and colleagues after the prolific actor’s death at the age of 92. “The great Dabney Coleman literally created, or defined, really — in a uniquely singular way — an archetype as a character actor,” Ben Stiller wrote on X. “He was so good at what he did it’s hard to imagine movies and television of the last 40 years without him.” “I’ve gone to Dan Tana’s restaurant regularly all my adult life. Dabney Coleman was always there, sitting in booth number one (appropriately), having his trademark steak,” actor James Woods wrote. “I had always loved him as an actor, and loved him more as we became friends. ##RIPDabneyColeman.” “We lost one of the GREATS,” actor Jon Donahue wrote. “His credits include some of my favorites: “On Golden Pond”, “9 to 5”, “Tootsie”, “WarGames”, & “Cloak & Dagger”. When Dabney Coleman was on screen, you couldn’t take your eyes off of him. He stole the show. RIP & Thank You for your gifts to Cinema.” “Dabney Coleman quietly carried some of the best movies of the

Tight-rope walker is latest problem for downtown L.A.’s graffiti towers

Add criminal tightrope walking to the list of problems besieging Oceanwide Plaza, the unfinished, bankrupt, vandalized, graffitied towers marring the skyline of downtown Los Angeles. A 28-year-old performance artist who goes by the name Reckless Ben filmed himsel f Sunday teetering along a 1-inch-wide slackline strung between two of the derelict properties’ skyscrapers 40 stories above Figueroa Street. “These buildings are pretty much the best canvas in L.A. right now,” Benjamin Schneider said . The stunt staged some 500 feet off the ground was first reported by KNBC. Schneider told The Times on Saturday that breaching a metal fence the city erected to discourage trespassing to get atop the building only “makes it cooler.” “It’s like, ‘Ha ha, we were able to get past police!’ It would have been boring if we were allowed to do it,” he said. It was the latest indignity for Oceanwide, once envisioned as a glamorous residential and hotel and retail complex in the hot South Park neighborhood but now a metaphor, in the eyes of some, of L.A.’s civic failures. Taggers earlier this year sprayed graffiti on at least

Plug-in hybrids are driven 12,199 miles, or 4.8 percent less than gasoline cars, while standard hybrids are driven 12,471 miles, or 2.7 percent less than gasoline models. “Range anxiety and charging infrastructure are top-of-mind for EV drivers, and those factors likely limit how far owners will drive them,” said Karl Brauer, iSeeCars Executive Analyst. “Hybrids and plug-in hybrids, where all-electric battery range is limited but range anxiety isn’t a factor, are driven only slightly less than gasoline cars, as reflected in their similar yearly mileage.” Average Miles Driven per Year for 3-Year-Old Gas Cars, EVs, and Hybrids – iSeeCars Study Drivetrain Avg Miles Driven per Year Compared to Gas Cars Gas Cars 12,813 — EVs 10,256 -20.0% Plug-In Hybrids 12,199 -4.8% Hybrids 12,471 -2.7% Most Driven Electric Vehicles Teslas are driven more than any other electric vehicle. Former Angel David Fletcher bet with the bookie used by Shohei Ohtani’s ex-interpreter, sources say

A former teammate of Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani may have made bets with the same bookie used by Ohtani’s ex-interpreter, ESPN has reported. Citing unnamed sources, the sports reporting platform said infielder David Fletcher, who was Ohtani’s Angel teammate from 2018 to 2023, placed bets with the bookmaking operation of Mathew Bowyer. Ohtani’s former Japanese language interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara, recently agreed to plead guilty in federal court to one count each of bank fraud and signing a false tax return as part of a scheme to surreptitiously steal more than $17 million from Ohtani to pay off an Orange County bookmaker, according to the U.S. Justice Department. ESPN said Fletcher, who was traded to Atlanta, placed bets on several sports, but not on baseball. (Charlie Neibergall / Associated Press) Fletcher was traded to Atlanta last year and had struggled since signing a five-year, $26-million contract with the Angels in 2021. He currently plays for the Gwinnett Stripers, the Braves’ minor league affiliate. ESPN reported Friday that Fletcher placed bets on several sports, but not on baseball. According to the report, former minor leaguer

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs abuse allegations: A timeline of key events

Newly released video appears to show Sean “Diddy” Combs beating his former singing protege and girlfriend Cassie in a Los Angeles hotel in 2016. The video was aired by CNN Friday six months after the R&B singer filed a lawsuit that set off a wave of similar cases and public allegations against one of the most influential music moguls of the past three decades. NOTE: The video in the media player is disturbing. Here’s a look at the key events that have unfolded since late last year. NOVEMBER 16, 2023 Cassie says in a lawsuit that Combs subjected her to years of abuse, including beatings and rape. Cassie, whose legal name is Cassandra Ventura, signed to Combs’ label in 2005, and the two were on-again-off-again romantic partners for more than a decade starting in 2007. The suit filed in federal court says Combs was “prone to uncontrollable rage” and subjected her to “savage” beatings. It says he plied her with drugs, forced her to have sex with other men, and raped her in her home as she was trying to end the relationship in 2018.

Hot weather poses new risk as thousands remain without power after deadly Houston storm

HOUSTON — As the Houston area works to clean up and restore power to hundreds of thousands after deadly storms left at least seven people dead, it will do so amid a smog warning and scorching temperatures that could pose health risks. National Weather Service meteorologist Marc Chenard said on Saturday that highs of around 90 degrees (32.2 C) were expected through the start of the coming week, with heat indexes likely approaching 100 degrees (38 C) by midweek. “We expect the impact of the heat to gradually increase … we will start to see that heat risk increase Tuesday into Wednesday through Friday,” Chenard said. The heat index is what the temperature feels like to the human body when humidity is combined with the air temperature, according to the weather service. “Don’t overdo yourself during the cleanup process,” the weather service’s Houston office said in a post on the social platform X. In addition to the heat, the Houston area could face poor air quality during the weekend. Heavy rainfall was possible in eastern Louisiana and central Alabama on Saturday, and parts of Louisiana
