Flames damaged a second-story residence and the garage below at a property in the Vermont Square area of Los Angeles Saturday. The fire was reported at 9:20 p.m. Saturday at 4712 S. Budlong Ave., according to the Los Angeles Fire Department’s Brian Humphrey. NCS track and field finals: De La Salle sprinter pulls off upset, Clayton Valley senior gets emotional win

DUBLIN — De La Salle sprinter Jaden Jefferson never beat Acalanes’ Paul Kuhner in a race before Saturday.  The sophomore knew in order to upset the current state leader in the 100-meter dash, it was going to take a special performance.  In what ended up being one of the tightest races of the night, Jefferson barely edged Kuhner as he took first place with a time of 10.46 at the North Coast Section Meet of Champions on Saturday. Kuhner finished the race in 10.50. Jefferson’s time would have been a top-10 finish in the state, but a wind reading of 2.4 prevented that.  “It’s just an honor to win NCS as a sophomore,” Jefferson said.  Jefferson got off the blocks fast and didn’t give up the lead the whole way through. Kuhner made the race interesting in the end, but couldn’t get ahead of the De La Salle sprinter.  “Paul’s a great racer,” Jefferson said. “He’s got long legs and he has good form, so I knew I had to keep the lead for the rest of the race.” Later in the day, Jefferson upset

CCS track and field finals: Los Altos, Mountain View, St. Ignatius, Mitty, Palo Alto standouts among top performers

GILROY – Nathaniel Guillory stumbled out of the starting blocks at Gilroy High in the 100-meter race. Not a great way to start the premier event at the Central Coast Section track and field championships, but also nothing he couldn’t handle.  Even when the Los Altos senior saw Live Oak’s Christian Hauge pull out ahead, Guillory stayed level-headed as he sprinted toward the finish line. “When Christian got out ahead of me, I didn’t tense up,” Guillory said. “I knew that the work was put in, and that I had the top speed to win.”  His self-belief was justified a few moments later after he crossed the finish line in front of the pack with a time of 10.78.  A couple events later, he beat out a couple of West Catholic Athletic League opponents in Serra’s Jaden Green and Mitty’s Prince Najeeb Babalola-Buchango for the 200-meter gold medal too. Guillory won with a time of 21.37 compared to Babalola-Buchango second-place time of 21.69.  “It’s all about every little decision,” Guillory said. “Not going to parties at night, cooling down and stretching and the core work

Carson wins City softball title on Alana Langford’s 14th-inning homer

All night long, Alana Langford was waiting for her pitch. It finally came with one out in the top of the 14th inning Saturday night in the City Section Open Division softball final and the first baseman did not miss it, working the count full and launching the ball high over the left-field fence for a home run that ultimately gave Carson a 1-0 victory over Granada Hills. The contest took four hours and two minutes and fans at Long Beach State were treated to one of the best and longest playoff games in City history, lasting four hours and two minutes. It was the second year in a row that Langford hit a game-winning homer in the championship game, having basted a two-run shot in the top of the eighth inning last spring against the Highlanders. “I could see their pitcher was getting tired and I told myself when she misses it, I gotta be on it,” Langford said. “This one means so much because I’m a senior and it’s my last time playing with my team. My dad’s our biggest fan, he watches

Jake Gyllenhaal sings his way through Season 49 finale of ‘Saturday Night Live’

On his third go-round as guest host of “Saturday Night Live,” Jake Gyllenhaal presided over the 49th season finale with everything going for him. His lead role in the Prime Video revival of “Road House” was well-received. He’s still getting bad-boy mileage out of “ All Too Well,” Taylor Swift’s 10-minute take down of him. And his new series “Presumed Innocent” for Apple TV+ will be out next month. But is he funny? The night’s grab bag of sketches, several of which required full-throated singing from the actor, made a strong case that maybe Gyllenhaal is one of those actors who is presumed (innocently?) to have a strong sense of humor due to one-offs like his classic “Mr. Music” bit in “John Mulaney & The Sack Lunch Bunch” until it’s actually time to perform comedy in a live setting like “SNL.” The season finale was rough, folks, and not because of giggles or any technical problems. You couldn’t blame the writing completely because there were some novel premises along the way and some decent jokes. But in at least half of the sketches where the

“No estoy triste. Sé que era una prueba. Necesitaba hacer más, pero sé que puedo hacer más. Así que le felicito por su victoria. Estoy feliz porque traté cosas en las 135 libras, y sé que voy a ser fuerte en esta división”. La realidad

Northeast Fresno welcomes Banyan Tree dispensary, boosting revenue hopes for city leaders

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — Banyan Tree, a new cannabis dispensary in Northeast Fresno, held its grand opening on Saturday. It’s one of several legal cannabis dispensaries operating in the city. After a very slow start, Fresno City leaders expect cannabis revenue to continue to bloom, with 13 businesses open out of the 19 that are allowed. “Banyan Tree is 100% local, locally owned,” said Ace Castillo, the CEO of Banyan Tree. “Local investments and dollars that came to help open this place.” The City expects to bring in about $7 million in cannabis revenue for the 2025 fiscal year, especially with 13 storefronts now operating. But last year, the city fell short. RELATED: Legal cannabis struggles to reach full bloom as City of Fresno misses projections “It was due largely in part to only having two dispensaries open,” said Fresno City Council President Annalisa Perea. “What we’ve seen recently is a vast influx of new storefronts opening.” Perea said a maximum of 21 dispensaries will be allowed to do business in the city, which would be about three stores per district. Los Angeles DA says too late for charges in 2016 assault allegedly involving Diddy

By ABC7.com staff Sunday, May 19, 2024 2:03AM The video reportedly shows Sean “Diddy” Combs assaulting his ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura at a Century City hotel in 2016. LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office says time has expired to file charges on a disturbing assault caught on video allegedly involving music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs. The video, newly made public, is believed to depict a 2016 incident in which Combs, wearing only a towel, assaults his former girlfriend Cassie Ventura at a Century City hotel. DA George Gascón’s office says if the incident did indeed happen in 2016, it would be too late to file criminal charges. “We are aware of the video that has been circulating online allegedly depicting Sean Combs assaulting a young woman in Los Angeles,” the DA’s office said. “We find the images extremely disturbing and difficult to watch.” “If the conduct depicted occurred in 2016, unfortunately we would be unable to charge as the conduct would have occurred beyond the timeline where a crime of assault can be prosecuted. As of today, law enforcement has not presented

Suspect dead after hours-long SWAT standoff in Tarzana

A shooting suspect is dead after an hours-long SWAT standoff in Tarzana Saturday. Police responded to reports of a man firing shots near Victory Boulevard and Sylvia Avenue at around 2 p.m., according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The armed suspect later barricaded himself inside a home on the 19200 block of Victory Boulevard, prompting police to evacuate nearby residents in the area. At one point, the suspect’s partner reportedly called police to tell them he was armed with a gun and had fired shots inside their home. Neighbors hold townhall meeting over proposed mega-shelter in Middletown

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Neighbors near a proposed “mega-shelter” in Middletown held a townhall to discuss their opinions on the City of San Diego’s proposed plan. “We’re not here to be the enemies, we’re actually here to be partners in all of this, we want to work with the community,” said Patty Ducey-Brooks, a longtime Mission Hills resident. One of the presenters at the townhall was Kevin Falcon, president of the San Diego neighborhood coalition and Little Italy resident. “In your opinion, what do you think is the best way to get people housed?” FOX 5’s Alani Letang asked. “First of all, the city needs to listen to the community, you need to have a plan. This is not a plan…” said Kevin Falcon, San Diego Neighborhood coalition president, and resident of Little Italy. The city is proposing a 65,000 square foot shelter on Kettner and Vine, which would have 1,000 beds, showers, restrooms, pet relief areas, and play areas for children. Sam Burgess’ three-run home run powers Corona to Division 1 baseball title

In a minor league ballpark where home runs don’t come often for high school players, Sam Burgess of Corona electrified the crowd during the Southern Section Division 1 championship game Saturday night by hitting a three-run home run over the right-field wall in the fourth inning against Harvard-Westlake ace Duncan Marsten, sending the Panthers to a 5-0 victory at Lake Elsinore’s Diamond Stadium. It was Corona’s sixth home run in five playoff games, with each one providing a decisive moment to help the Panthers (30-3) become the first No. 1 seed since Camarillo in 2002 to win the Division 1 title. Burgess, a Texas Christian commit, came to the plate after Josh Springer was hit by a pitch and Billy Carlson reached base on an infield single. From the moment he swung, Burgess sensed the ball would leave the field. It was a changeup left over the middle of the plate. Marsten and Corona’s Ethan Schiefelbein had been engaged in the expected pitching duel, with neither budging until Burgess came through. Given a three-run lead, the left-handed Schiefelbein, who has committed to UCLA, showed his

According to Actors’ Equity, 953 voted in favor of unionizing, while 258 voted against the move on Saturday. “They say that Disneyland is ‘the place where dreams come true,’ and for the Disney Cast Members who have worked to organize a union, their dream came true today,” Actors’ Equity Association President Kate Shindle said in a statement. “These workers are on the front lines of the Guest experience; they’re the human beings who create lifelong memories when your kids hug a character, or when your family watches a parade roll by the castle,’ Shindle added. “The next step will be to collaborate with them about improving health & safety, wages, benefits, working conditions and job security. After that we will meet with representatives of the Walt Disney Company to negotiate those priorities into a

Piedmont rejuvenated coming off bye, shuts out Hercules to advance to NCS Division IV semifinals

PIEDMONT — Despite not playing in 11 days, there was no rust on Piedmont’s baseball team.  The two-seeded Highlanders looked rejuvenated in their 5-0 win over No. 10 Hercules in the second round of the North Coast Section Division IV playoffs on Saturday. Piedmont will play McKinleyville at home in the semifinals. “I thought our guys were super fresh,” said Piedmont coach Eric Olson. “We had a lot of games towards the end of the season. All in all, I was super happy with the way the guys came out today.” Piedmont junior Shafer Dando was 2 for 3 with four RBIs and Markos Lagios had two hits and a run.  Pitcher John Olsen pitched a complete game shutout, striking out two and allowing seven hits.  “We know we have to have our effort increase,” Dando said about playing in the playoffs. “We just have to play clean ball. That’s it.” Piedmont jumped on Hercules in the first inning.  Junior Will Parker got things going by knocking in Lagios on an RBI single to right field. Later in the inning, Dando hit a ball deep
