Business owner outraged after RV encampment cleanup takes away parking

An RV encampment cleanup in December has led to new problems for business owners in Hollywood Hills.  The original cleanup took place on Dec. 6 and involved about 50 motorhomes along Forest Lawn Drive.  Deadly crash shuts down all but one lane on 101 Freeway in Los Angeles The City of Los Angeles has since painted the curbs red where the RVs used to park, preventing any civilian vehicles from parking there. A local business owner told KTLA that the shortage of parking is having a negative impact on her business and a nearby film school and that many drivers are forced to pay expensive daily rates. A stretch of Forest Lawn Drive in Hollywood Hills, CA has been designated as a no parking zone, something a local business owner says is having a negative impact. (KTLA) “If I would have known that’s how the parking was going to be when I first opened my business, I would have not opened here,” said Nancy Sexton, owner of The Muse Rooms, a coworking office space. “My clients come first, and I have a price point that’s

Supreme Court to examine obstruction law used to prosecute Jan. 6 rioters

By Melissa Quinn April 15, 2024 / 11:59 AM EDT / CBS News Officials warn of risks to democracy in 2024 Officials in Jan. 6 cases warn of threats to democracy in 2024 05:02 Washington — The fallout from the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol will land before the Supreme Court on Tuesday when the justices convene to consider the scope of a federal obstruction statute used to prosecute those who breached the building, as well as former President Donald Trump. At the crux of the case , known as Fischer v. U.S., is whether federal prosecutors can apply a law passed in the wake of the Enron scandal, which makes it a crime to “corruptly” obstruct or impede an official proceeding, to the Jan. 6 assault. Before the Jan. 6 attack, prosecutors had never used the law in cases that did not involve evidence tampering, as the first provision of the measure prohibits altering, destroying, mutilating or concealing a document. But since  Jan. 6 , it has been levied against more than 330 defendants who breached the building where Congress had

Hannah Gutierrez-Reed faces up to 18 months in prison for her part in the 2021 tragedy that several experts have since characterized as a preventable incident, where actor Alec Baldwin discharged live rounds from a prop gun on the movie set during a rehearsal. Last month, a jury convicted Gutierrez-Reed on the involuntary manslaughter charge, brought against her by the state of New Mexico in the wake of the “Rust” shooting. The 27-year-old former weapons supervisor  on the Western film could also receive a fine for as much as $5,000, along with prison time, at the sentencing hearing in Sante Fe. She had originally been charged with a second felony count by the state for evidence tampering but was acquitted at the

Information on his identity was not immediately available. The rockslide was reported to the California Highway Patrol at 4:41 a.m. Sunday near a tunnel where Las Virgenes Road becomes Malibu Canyon Road and crosses Piuma Road in Agoura Hills. Caltrans ordered the road shut all the way to Pacific Coast Highway, according to the agency’s post on social media. Bureau of Prisons to close California women’s prison where inmates have been subjected to sex abuse

By MICHAEL R. SISAK and MICHAEL BALSAMO (Associated Press) The federal Bureau of Prisons said Monday it is planning to close a women’s prison in California known as the “rape club” despite attempts to reform the troubled facility after an Associated Press investigation exposed rampant staff-on-inmate sexual abuse. Bureau of Prisons Director Colette Peters said in a statement to the AP that the agency had “taken unprecedented steps and provided a tremendous amount of resources to address culture, recruitment and retention, aging infrastructure – and most critical – employee misconduct.” “Despite these steps and resources, we have determined that FCI Dublin is not meeting expected standards and that the best course of action is to close the facility,” Peters said. “This decision is being made after ongoing evaluation of the effectiveness of those unprecedented steps and additional resources.” FCI Dublin, about 21 miles (34 kilometers) east of Oakland, is one of six women-only federal prisons, and the only one west of the Rocky Mountains. It currently has 605 inmates — 504 inmates in its main prison and another 101 at an adjacent minimum-security camp. That’s

Tax Day reveals a major split in how Joe Biden and Donald Trump would govern

By JOSH BOAK and JILL COLVIN (Associated Press) WASHINGTON (AP) — Tax Day reveals a major split in how Joe Biden and Donald Trump would govern: The presidential candidates have conflicting ideas about how much to reveal about their own finances and the best ways to boost the economy through tax policy. Biden, the sitting Democratic president, plans to release his income tax returns on Monday, the IRS filing deadline. And on Tuesday, he is scheduled to deliver a speech in Scranton, Pennsylvania, about why the wealthy should pay more in taxes to reduce the federal deficit and help fund programs for the poor and middle class. Biden is proud to say that he was largely without money for much of his decades-long career in public service, unlike Trump, who inherited hundreds of millions of dollars from his father and used his billionaire status to launch a TV show and later a presidential campaign. “For 36 years, I was listed as the poorest man in Congress,” Biden told donors in California in February. “Not a joke.” In 2015, Trump declared as part of his candidacy

Brandon Crawford comes home . . . to Oakland, not SF Giants

OAKLAND — Curious about seeing Brandon Crawford in a uniform other than the Giants? The best chance will be Monday through Wednesday at the Coliseum when Crawford comes back to the Bay Area as a reserve shortstop for the St. Louis Cardinals, who play a three-game series against the Athletics. “It will be a strange for sure,” said A’s pitcher Alex Wood, a former teammate. “In this day and age not many guys play the length of time he played with an organization. He’s an icon in the Bay. It will be strange but it will be nice to catch up with him and see how things are going in St. Louis.” A return to Oracle Park and the scene of some of Crawford’s greatest triumphs wont happen until the season is almost over. The Cardinals don’t visit San Francisco until the final series of the regular season, Sept. 27 -29. Plenty of time to get that statue ready. Although Crawford grew up in Pleasanton and starred at Foothill High, his heart as a young fan was across the bay with the Giants. It was

Warriors’ overachieving rookie duo set for intense play-in test

SAN FRANCISCO — The Warriors, under Steve Kerr, have seen it all. They’ve had home-court advantage throughout the playoffs, won an NBA record 73 games, bottomed out in a lost 15-win season, lost in the play-in round and made a championship run as the 3-seed. Yet the situation they currently find themselves in is a new one. Never have the Warriors entered the postseason as a 10-seed, facing the prospect of two single-elimination games on the road to even earn a playoff series. Even while finishing 10 games above .500, Golden State is the lowest-seeded team in the Western Conference playoff bracket. And since the legendary trio of Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green blossomed, Kerr has never relied so heavily on rookies. Brandin Podziemski and Trayce Jackson-Davis both figure to play at least 20 minutes in Sacramento as key cogs of the Warriors’ rotation. They’ve earned it; Podziemski leads the team in plus-minus and Jackson-Davis’ vertical threat on both ends of the court has locked in the team’s most cohesive starting lineup. They went on ESPN last week to stake their claim as

Purdy basks in ‘real love’ at youth camp before 49ers’ offseason program

SANTA CLARA – Hundreds of kids swarmed Brock Purdy as he dashed out of the Levi’s Stadium tunnel and onto the 49ers’ sun-splashed field for his first-ever youth football camp. Not a bad way to spend his final Sunday before the 49ers’ offseason program, which begins Monday. “This community, they’ve gotten behind my back and supported me since I jumped in the role, and it’s real love that you can feel,” Purdy said. “I just want to give back, give them my time, and show them that I’m human, too. I’m not just a guy they see on TV, but a guy who is just like them.” About 650 kids spent a few hours playing catch, doing drills, and hollering their devotion to the 49ers’ third-year quarterback. Their parents watched from the stands, five months before the 49ers return in full to defend their NFC crown and seek Super Bowl redemption. As Purdy further ingratiates himself with the Bay Area community, that effort should not be overlooked or minimized. It is a connection the franchise has long sought from the quarterback position, all due respect

Trump’s criminal hush money trial kicks off in NY: Live updates

Former President Trump is back in a New York courtroom Monday, this time for the start of his first criminal trial in a matter involving a hush money payment made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels just before the 2016 election. The trial will begin Monday with jury selection, in which hundreds of New Yorkers must be whittled down to 12 people and six alternates. That process is expected to last at least several days before opening arguments begin and star witnesses take the stand. Trump makes history as the first former or current U.S. president to ever face a criminal trial in a case that also made him the first former chief executive to be criminally indicted. It’s far from the only legal issues he faces. Trump is also charged in three other criminal indictments: one in Georgia over his efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss there, a federal indictment also involving the 2020 election and Jan. 6, 2021, and a federal case in Florida involving the potential mishandling of classified documents after he left office.
